This is such a good up north kinda place. All long construction and great layout. The owner / bartender was super friendly and great to talk with. She genuinely cares about her place and it shows! Definitely suggest getting a cheese curd basket. Holy hell, it's huge! Very good and I bet a family of five would have trouble tackling it. A lot of speciality drink and the fruity pebbles one was pretty spot on. Be forewarned, it looks crowded from the outside but there's plenty of room inside. Try the pull tabs. Seriously, this place is TOP NOTCH. The food is ALWAYS amazing and the amount of food that you get is unmatched (compliments to the chef)! Establishment is smaller in size but as packed as they get, it's always great service, and the waitresses are phenomenal (always working hard), the vibe is just "happy". After a lot of folks telling us we needed to try the Big Dipper, we were finally able to. The place is very cozy with a good size bar, 6-7 tables and a stage area. We got there on a Friday afternoon with it already being 1/2 full. An hour later it was packed with a bit of a wait. Good combination of locals and visitors. Service was great, portions are huge and prices are for the most part reasonable. We ordered a pizza and a 2 piece fish fry. Everything came out fairly quickly and tastey. The food, holy moly! The two of us ordered the large pizza, as is our custom (leftovers, don't ya know). Well, we got blown away, see below! Not only big, but super-tasty sausage, cheese (Belgiolosos cheese factory working overtime to keep up?) All right, then the couple next to us got hamburger baskets. Since they were chuckling about how big our pizza was, I took a peek at their baskets. Again, wow! Big, maybe half-pounders and on the side...about a wheelbarrow full of French fries-him, and onion rings-her! Leftovers for sure. We did see a serving of cheese curds come out to the folks next to us. Would there be just a couple of small nuggets? Not at Big Dipper, again the wheelbarrow-full of big, delicious cheese curds. Atmosphere- fun people and music, not too loud for us old gomers. Loving the dark stained log interior with fish mounts, etc just as you like it at a good 'ol up north Wisconsin restaurant. The new owners are young, energetic and local and are supportive of all the local businesses and people as well as all the seasonals. The food is exceptional and the pizza is the best I've ever had as others have said. I make sure to get the pizza everytime I am up, with leftovers to take home to Illinois. The low ceilings on this old log building continue the northern Wisconsin, old world feel but inviting to us who don't live there year round. read more

Just visited the Big Dipper. Started coming here thirty years ago when it was the Northernaire ... it was a great place to bring family and guests. For some reason we haven't been here for about ten years. Then last night we decided to go out for a burger ... but the kitchen was closed at Musky Jack's, our usually burger place. The bartender there steered us to the Big Dipper ... the new rendition of the Northernaire. What a find! Burgers were really good ... as were the home-made potato chips. A small selection of tap beers ... but some good ones to choose from. And the owners are great ... a soon-to-be-married couple. Before opening they really spiffed up the place ... completely remodeled restrooms, a new kitchen, new tables and chairs in the dining area ... and it looks like the log walls have been newly varnished. It's going to be one of our regular stops ... once again. read more

My family and I have been coming to the Northernaire for 20 years. Every time we walk in the door it feels like home. From the friendly conversation to the giant basket of the best curds ever, we will always keep coming back. The mushroom and swiss burger should be featured on a food network show! Everything is cooked fresh and the weekend breakfasts are lumberjack size. The ham and cheese omelette had another piece of ham on top! No one else comes close to this place. It is hard to come up with new superlatives to describe the NorthernAire experience. Literally everything is truly great from the food to the people to the bar atmosphere. My nephew Oscar has said numerous times they have the BEST cheeseburger he has ever had...and he has eaten quite a few in his days. I am heading that way in about a week and will be pulling up a chair several times there right after Sunday FunDay. Decade after decade, this fixture in the Northwoods is a "bucket list" requirement for anyone remotely in the area. read more
