i keep coming back thinking the food will get better, that the times it wasn't good were just flukes. but this just doesn't happen. i can't even find a formula that works, like "if there aren't many ppl eating, service will be fast, the food will be good." the only thing that's predictable here is that the quality will just always be a toss up. read more

I was very disappointed in the bar service the other night. I didn't tip the bartender because I had earlier that night and I signed the receipt and the bartender shouted, "thanks for the tip" and made me feel horrible, and someone at the bar yelled "you didn't tip him? What is wrong with you?!" And if only they realized I had already tipped way too much previously. I just get like I was being attacked by the bartender for not tipping him. I shouldn't have to tip after every 5 dollar drink. read more

I'm here to outline how my night went at the Biltmore. I showed up with a group of friends, and we were not let in until we presented school IDs (understandable to keep the riff raff out). After entering the bar we were obviously older than 90% of the clientele. There were stumbling children everywhere, some kids that looked to be 16 years old. I realized it was survivor hour ($1 shots in mixed drinks) so that explained the level of intoxication. Being outside I witnessed 5 kids fall down the steps, 2 fights and 1 girl (who couldn't have been more than 18) have to be carried out of the bar. It's a little bizarre being one of the older people at a bar when I'm only 22. I would go back in the daytime to try the food but I don't really want to go to a bar with no ethical standards that serves underage kids to the point they're puking and need to be carried home. read more

NO MORE HAPPY HOUR?!?! For almost 2 years the BIltmore has been our home for our graduate department's Happy Hour. At least once(sometimes 3 times! ) a week we love to go there to grab a drink and be served our favorite bartenders and managers. We came last Friday as usual and were very disappointed to hear that our favorite happy hour special, 2 dollars off the wonderful draft beers (we're not talking about PBR or the like here), is no longer. We love the Biltmore, but will have to go somewhere else for our Happy Hour as we love to grab a drink or two often enough, and other places just have better deals. If some form of Happy Hour comes back, so will our department's business. read more

I moved to charlottesville in feb and was really excited to visit Biltmore bc it looks very inviting from the outside with its lit up outdoor area. Finally I went with a couple of friends who were visiting and we had a great server and a great time.....until our check came at the end of the evening. We had ordered the well specials and when our checks came we were charged for doubles bc they "assumed" that is what we wanted. The waitress was very friendly when we explained to her that we had intended to order standard drinks but the mgr that came to us was completely unprofessional and frankly uncomfortable. He gave us an attitude and after we told him we didn't want new drinks and we just wanted clarification on the prices of the drinks we had already ordered, he took away the drinks that we had been drinking from and replaced them with new, smaller drinks explaining that we had paid for singles so singles are what we will get. We told him we did not want replacement drinks but he took them away and then was very rude about what we were charged for. Later, he continuously approached us about the situation and would not just let it be. It really made us end the night on a bad note. Overall this place has a really cool exterior and I may even want to go back to sit outside, but because it is also a huge college bar, I may wait until the off season...and hope that I don't see that same manager. read more

Our recent experiences with The Biltmore Grill have made us want to come back for more! Our first visit was a few weeks ago on a Thursday, which happened to be survivor hour. While We are not the typical college student crowd, we really enjoyed ourselves! We love going to places that have activities to offer - especially cornhole, and found our visit to be very enjoyable. Between the friendly bartenders, the delicious appetizers, the drink specials, and the great location, we were more than satisfied with our visit! We came back another day, with our children this time, and loved that The Biltmore Grill was so family friendly too. Each time we went, we met great people and just had a fun time. This was my hands-down favorite bar as a UVA undergrad. Suprisingly enough, it's not bad for lunch/dinner, either - although the service was always painfully slow due to the ridiculous turnover in wait staff, the salads on giant pizza crusts were always fresh and tasty, and if buffalo wings are your thing (they aren't mine), plates of 'thumbs 'n' toes' never lasted long with a $2-pitcher-drinking group. I even took my dad here for dinner and a drink before the Rolling Stones concert at Scott Stadium - thus outing my barely-21-year-old self as a long-standing "regular" in front of a parental unit. Ooops. Of course, the best feature of the Biltmore was Survivor Hour ($1 rail drinks from 9-10 on Thursdays), but I think the new Charlottesville ABC agent cracked down on that kind of deal. Anyway, this is still my go-to lunch spot on the odd football game day that I make it down to the 'ville, and I hope to be able to make nostalgic visits here for years to come. read more

This place was great. 1st, it's a sunny day and most of the outdoor tables are under pergola / shrubbery. So cool... literally. 2nd, the waitress was super friendly / provided good service. Finally, had the B Sandwich for breakfast and it was outstanding! Grits and home fries on the side also delicious. I think they could've used a little more help on a Sunday morning after a football game. But the waitress was great regardless. Should also add that the music they played was lovely. read more

Food is extremely sub par and makes one feel unhealthy. I've been twice and both times I have been disappointed by my meal; my friends have felt the same way. Crammed with obnoxious UVa students who only seem to loudly discuss how much and how often they drink, and in one case cataloging where they defecated on the UVa campus the night before. I guess this is what I get for coming to Charlottesville. Neither the atmosphere nor the food won me over and the service was slow as a final insult. read more

Might be great as a dive bar, but can't recommend it as a restaurant. Food is kind of gross outside of the thumbs and toes.

First of all, I'm not sure that the two stars reflects this restaurant overall, but reflects the management and the way that I was treated which managed to ruin my experience here. My husband and I were excited to stop in Charlottesville to visit a friend who had just relocated to the area. After a long drive, I went straight to the restroom upon arrival while my husband went to get a table. After I walked out, I was not sure where he went as there are many different rooms. The manager (who at the time I thought was just a customer) asked me if I was waiting for my friends to arrive. I said they're here, but I'm not sure where they went and he proceeded to tell me that "that's what alcohol will do". After I informed him that I in fact hadn't had any alcohol, he did not offer to help or apologize for his assumption. My friend and I eventually found my husband and sat down to order a drink. We ordered the drink that was on special according to the daily special menu and overall had a great time, pleasant waitress, until we asked for another drink and our check. The waitress brought us our drink and check, and when we opened our bill, we were surprised to find out that we were charged double the price that was on the menu right in front of us. The waitress informed us that she had given us "doubles" (and also charged us double the price) even thought we hadn't asked for them because she said that's usually what people want. She then walked away, apparently to ask the manager what she should do. The manager walked over and before we even had the change to speak, was pompous and accusatory. I tried to inform him that we weren't upset, but that we just were surprised when we got our check and were wondering why it was double what we had expected. Instead of listening to me, he stormed off and returned a few minutes later with three new drinks in small plastic cups a little bigger than a Dixie cup. He put them down in front of us and then reached across the table, grabbed the drinks that we were drinking right out of our hands and took them away. As he slammed our new drinks down, he said "if you want singles, you'll get singles". I will say that after all of this happened, he did adjust our check, but in this case the money was not the issue. If he had politely informed us of the misunderstanding, we would have gladly paid the full price, but we were much more upset with the was we were treated and the way that the situation was handled than about the price. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant as long as you do not have to deal with the manager. read more

The great big outdoor space at the Biltmore: SO FUN! We went and had a late lunch and drinks at the bar out back on Tuesday -- it's really hot out this week but their beers were icy cold :) It's a pretty simple menu, thumbs and toes were freakin awesome, I would definitely reccommend. The prices were really good too. And play the ring game! Or the beanbag game! I just liked it a lot because there are things to do other than just sit and drink. read more

We had a very large party to accommodate (25+ people), and the space was perfect. In addition to lunch, people ordered appetizers, deserts, and alcohol, and still the bill was very reasonable.
