We recently bought a pole to keep the squirrels away and Casey has all kinds of great tips and information. We also purchased a handy laminated bird guide that helps you identify birds of the region. The best part about Backyard Bird is the residential cat named Ruby. Casey saved Ruby and she sits atop the counter or parts of the store. Apart from the neat bird supplies, I love visiting just to see Ruby. Support local and check this place out the next time you need bird seed, feeders, or any other supplies for birds.

As you browse, you'll hear a CD playing of chirping birds. It's relaxing, in a way. If you're just starting out with a backyard bird haven and aren't sure what's available that isn't in the nearby big-box store, Outdoor Bird Company might be a good place to start. But, if you're not really sure you want to invest a lot of money, then stick with the big chain stores until you're sure because OBC, like most places of this kind, is not inexpensive.

This is the Food Lion shopping center on Hope Valley Road in Durham, officially called Woodcroft Shopping Center. Neither of us had heard of WBU until discovering this store. There are six locations in the Triangle. There are three in the Triad where I grew up and 12 in metro Atlanta where we also call home. WBU sells bird feeders, bird food, nesting boxes, bird baths, and other associated hardware and accessories. My wife saw a hummingbird outside one of the living room windows of our upper-floor apartment. Therefore, we ended up getting a Mosaic Birds (Couronne Company) brand hummingbird feeder ($26.99) and WBU hummingbird and oriole nectar (8 oz for $3.99). To go on top of the feeder, to keep ants away from the nectar, we got a "Trap It" ant trap ($7.99). After tax, everything was $41.89 to start feeding hummingbirds on our balcony. The feeder was an immediate success! While eating dinner one evening, around sunset, I spotted a hummingbird going to town on the nectar. The next evening, my wife and I had a blast watching different hummingbirds take turns feeding. We knew they were different based on their color (e.g. one hummingbird's neck was white) and size. There was a relatively small hummingbird that struggled with finding the nectar at first - it kept trying to insert its beak and tongue from the side, but it finally found one of the holes on top. After three days, about a third of the nectar in the feeder was gone. The items from WBU were totally worth the money. Customer service was great. There were two young female employees that looked like they were high school or college students. Both were very nice and very helpful. Thank you! This is WBU store #332. Right after that near-escape with my dignity intact, a bird flew past, close enough I could hear its wings flapping, headed toward the same birdbath. Two near misses in 30 seconds. I liked this store already. Catering to the backyard bird enthusiast, or even the casual bird watcher, Wild Birds Unlimited has a really nice selection of bird feeders of all kinds and even a few bird baths and bird houses - including for bats and owls. The feeders are all well made. There's little chance they'll fall apart after one filling. And if you're like me, fighting an often-losing battle keeping squirrels out of your bird feeder, you'll find a pretty nice selection of squirrel proof feeders here. You'll even find a few feeders that are bacteria resistant so as to help you keep your wild feathered friends healthy. If watching birds is something you like to do, but would rather not stand or sit at the window or door all day, you can buy a small birdwatchers camera to hook up to your TV. They advertised it for using with owls, but it would probably work anywhere. And last but not least, the bird food. There's a large selection of food: seeds, meal worms, fruit, to attract nearly any type of bird. For a store located in a concrete and blacktop wasteland to take the time to create a mini-oasis outside their front door, complete with bird bath and bird feeders, should tell you they're serious about their business.

It was laughed about that, "this happens when we don't have climate control in our warehouse." No effort was made to offer compensation or a price adjustment if I chose to purchase a different line of dog food instead from this Petco location. I asked for a discount such as 10% off of our purchase of a different brand of food due to the major health concern surrounding Wholehearted, yet the manager was unaccommodating. This response was extremely dismissive given the seriousness of the issue and I will never be returning as a Petco customer.

Dr. Greg Burkett is our bird whisperer…read more We've known Dr. B. for nine years now... when his establishment was known solely as The Birdie Boutique. In those days, he sold birds, cages, toys, bird food, and provided boarding and veterinary services. I think I heard say that at the time, he was one of only three certified avian vets in the state of North Carolina. We've been regular customers of his ever since... as there has always been a special warmth there. You can tell he loves his birds! We've entrusted the care of Mango, our Senegal parrot , only to him - as well as the health and well being of the five budgies we've had over the years. From our first experience there, when his business was full of birds for sale (watched over by Joy, a 'mother hen' of a store manager) they wouldn't sell a companion bird to anyone that didn't meet their exacting standards. If they had the slightest inkling that a person or household could not or would not provide a healthy environment for all the long years that a bird can live, they would not sell. Period. I really respected that! Eventually, Dr. Burkett decided to get out of the business of selling birds. From our various conversations, I believe he was afraid that too many people were breeding birds, and that could ultimately lead to more birds than could be cared for in loving homes. I'm sure it was a very difficult decision for him business-wise, but he stopped selling birds. While he continues to sell cages, food and supplies, and boards birds for vacationing owners, Dr. B. has of late really focused on his first love, his veterinary practice. In fact, he's remodeled the business completely, giving his exam rooms the space and amenities they deserve. We visited Dr. B. again today - and he was there with empathy and compassion, to help us transition our little Blue into eternal rest. That little budgie was almost 12 years old, and by far the sweetest and most personable of the four budgies that, along with Mango, make up our flock. She'd been suffering the ravages of age, which in budgies, often manifests itself in gout or arthritic symptoms. We'd tried the medicines and the other courses recommended by Dr. B., but saw her decline quickly in the last few days. It was a painful decision - but the right one, I'm sure. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Burkett to anyone that was looking for the best in avian care - from someone that really cares about birds!
