I recently had an appointment with the LA County Registrar's office to file my oath/bond and finalize my notary commission(!!). I had all of my documents ready... Or so I thought. The clerk, after noticing that I was using my middle name on my commission and not my legal first name, shooed me away and said I needed to find a notary to notarize my oath papers. Using an entirely different first name is allowed -- as long as you're using your legal last name -- so I was surprised. I walked out of the building, mildly dejected. I pulled my phone to search Yelp (of course) for a local notary in the area. Well, right across the street, I found The Biz Shop. I also found half a dozen other notaries, but this one was the closest and had stellar reviews. I walked right in and was pointed toward Katie's office. No appointment or notice necessary. She, too, was surprised that they were giving me grief for using my middle name. Nonetheless, I swore my oath to her and she notarized my documents. The whole thing took 5 minutes and she charged my credit card in seconds. I was back at the clerk's office... only to wait 15 minutes for her to come back from her break and finish processing my paperwork. Sigh. I filed my DBA and had to publish within 30 days but of course, I procrastinated and my deadline was a week away. Eeek! I received a few mailings from companies offering to help me with publication but I chose The Biz Shop for these reasons: 1. My name and address were handwritten. They took the time to do that - a nice touch. 2. It was the most cost-efficient - only $28! This is for real guys, no scam here! 3. In the letter, the owners introduced themselves and seemed friendly. This was my first time doing a dba and I was nervous and scared. A friendly letter was what I needed to help me finish the dba process. I called and Katie answered immediately. Talking to Katie was like talking to my best friend. She was extremely helpful, supportive, and personable. She asked me to email her a pdf copy of my filed Fictitious Business Name Statement. I gave payment information and that was it! Easy peasy! They made me feel very welcome and after spending half an hour with them, all my business paperwork has been taken care of, and we planned for the future such that i don't have to visit anymore in the future. I run an ecom business and I must confess that there are days when I just don't want to deal with paperwork and just want to be a lazy bastard and focus on the stuff that matters, not paperwork. That's why paying to have it done RIGHT will save you a great big headache and running around back and forth. WORTH IT. No, they were not trying to "get me in and out asap". They actually took the time to explain everything and made me feel welcome and informed. I did a DBA with them, and had to change addresses on a seller permit and business permit, and a few other things. Roughly paid about 300. Took roughly 45 min. They also have an inhouse notary. I worked with Tracie. She was extremely nice, helpful, and cared about my problems and worked with me until i fully understood what to do. I will be using them every year now.
