I was partched after visiting the Trevi fountain. I was approached by a group of fun loving Aussie's (as if there were any other kind) ! (I had been at an amazing concert in the nearby Anglican Church in the middle of a heat wave. The music had been extraordinary. The acoustics had been extraordinary. The water had been non-existent.) So I stagger, happy but dry as the Sahara into the Flann O'Brien. My wife wouldn't go into an Irish pub Even if she was being pursued by muggers and needed someone to call the police. If you look at the side door of the Flann O'Brien, you can see two heel tracks etched into the cement. That was me dragging my wife into the Flann O'Brien. * * * There were tons and tons of people in the Flann O'Brien. They were all having a wonderful time. This has been true of nearly every Irish pub I have been to in non-Ireland Europe. There is always a crowd in the pub and they are all enjoying themselves mightily. In tourist districts, the patrons are tourists. In residential districts, the patrons are locals. Either way, high spirits prevail. Either way, no other establishment anywhere nearby has as many people Let alone as many happy people. * * * I promised my wife I would chug down my beer and we would get out of there as soon as the glass was empty. The beer I was chugging down was an absolutely first rate Irish hoppy lager: 7 Virtues. I would order 7 Virtues again in a nanosecond. While we were eating, plate after plate of absolutely wonderful looking viands were being carried by the waiters to other tables. Somewhere there was karaoke. The Flann O'Brien is huge. Loud music in one room does not rule out quiet intimate conversation in one of the many other rooms. Had I been there solo, I would have had gone through a string of 7 Virtues, ordered a plate of something, and listened to the karaoke singers ... some of whom were really good. But a deal is a deal. I finished my beer, and off we went. That said - if you are in the center of town, and you want to have a good time, and you don't care if that good time is particularly Italian, The Flann O'Brien is calling your name. I would go with a burger or nachos ... but they have pizzas and Italian entrees if you are so inclined. Stick to the Irish beer. * * * Revision based on the advice of other Yelpers: The other reviews are unanimous in claiming that the "American-style" food at the Flann O'Brien is terrible. Pizza gets higher marks. No one seems to have tried the Italian mains. But since there is virtually no disagreement on this point ... Make sure your food order is Italian. You can still go with Irish beer.

I was a bit turned off by the waiter who asked for a tip when we paid. When we said we'd give a certain amount, he re-asked with a higher amount which felt manipulative.

It's darkly lit, and not too loud, but not quiet enough that you hear everyone else. There's no dancing upstairs, but there is light music playing. We sat there and had a few pints while watching a Roma futbol match with some locals, which proved to be a fun time. They had plenty of outdoor seating and heaters, which was a nice touch in December. The four-stars is for the beer selection and ability to hang out and watch matches. The bartender was very friendly and immediately prepared our drinks and placed some snacks out for us to enjoy. I went with the Nazionale which was crisp and delicious. They had a great gastro pub style menu which I would be willing to try next time in Rome. The also have a wine and spirits shop on a catwalk above the dining area accessed by a spiral staircase.

Their cocktail menu seems innovative but also classic and welcoming. I think there's something for everyone! I only tried their welcome snack as far as food, but even that was great. Their chips with a ketchup-link dipping sauce was so good. I just know the rest of their food has to also be amazing as well. Definitely check this place out if in Rome. I'd recommend making a reservation just to be safe, as I can't imagine this place not skyrocketing to fame and getting very busy!

The shizuku is on the sweeter side and the white cola on the Long Island cocktail definitely enhances the flavor. Yes, the cocktails are premade, but they are still good drinks! The bartender, who was incredibly friendly motioned to the young lady at the front and inquired. She immediately said "of course" and took us to lovely table. I opted for the Nebbiolo braised beef cheek and mashed potatoes and my partner ordered the Veal ossobuco in gremolada with battered carrots. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and I now wish I had taken a picture. Our server recommended a bottle of wine which was perfectly paired with our meals. The next day, we decided to return. Though it was crowded, they sat us immediately. I ordered the Sliced Danish beef fillet, served with demi-glace and seasonal vegetables and my partner ordered the Golden tuna tataki, mixed vegetables with soy and grapefruit gel. Again, both dishes absolutely mouth watering. We took turns taking bites off of each others plates. When dinner was complete, we decided to have a cocktail on the roof patio. I have to say, the staff is not only friendly, professional and attentive, but they really pay attention to what's going on. Three gentlemen sat next to us on the outside railing and began to smoke. I'm highly allergic and our server noticed me putting my finger to my nose many times. She came out to the patio, tapped me on the shoulder and said "your table is ready, come with me". I was about to remind her we had just dined when she put her finger to her lips in the "shhh" position. She sat us at a lovely inside table by the window of the patio and told us "now you can enjoy your cocktail without smoke". Now THAT'S service. We waited at the bar for about an hour and we talked to the friendly bartender until we had a table ready. He was very friendly and super helpful. We asked him for his recommendation of what food items we should get and he recommended the rabbit pasta and the beef cheek stew. We ended up ordering both. Hubby had the rabbit dish while I had the beef cheek stew and both were amazing! I loved my dish more than hubby's and he loved his more than mine. The beef was melt in your mouth tender. I had a bite and felt like I was home! The whole meal felt like it was made with love. I enjoyed every bite of it, and I'm still dreaming about it to this day! The bartender also recommended wine paring which was perfect for each dish. If you're into trying something new, definitely give those 2 dishes a try. They are so worth it. I wish I took pictures because presentation was nice too. I can't recommend this place enough!
