The menu looked good, as did the inside, but the service was the worst of any place we went to in our 2-1/2 weeks in the British Isles. We were staying a hotel just a few blocks away and, based on the menu and overall rating, were looking forward to eating several meals here. (We also had a guide who said Fuller pubs were usually good. We stopped in for breakfast on our second day in London and ended up leaving after about 20 minutes of literally being ignored. After the first 10 minutes of no one taking our order, my husband talked to someone working at the bar, who confirmed that it was table service but that the pub was busy. (No apology, by the way, and the tables weren't all full.) After 5 to 10 more minutes, I was able to grab the server's attention and let her know we'd like to order. She said, "OK," then proceeded to walk away and not return for 5 more minutes. We finally gave up and went to another breakfast place. So disappointing. I get that places can be busier than staff expects, but it's not OK to ignore your patrons with impunity. read more

A small, cute bar/restaurant in Chelsea. We went here for authentic British food and were not disappointed. I got the Madras Chicken pie and it was exactly the right amount of spicy and full of flavor. The chips were a little on the oily side, but maybe some people prefer it that way. Came here for breakfast; asked if the oj was freshly squeezed and the server said yes. I ordered fresh orange juice & the eggs Benedict. Orange juice arrived and was not fresh. When I complained they said "it's fresh but from a carton". They obviously do not understand the meaning of freshly squeezed. Just right next door from Hotel Indigo, it was a perfect choice to try a local hangout without having to walk to far back to the hotel. Lively, crowded, and big portions of food is what you'll find at this pub. Nice selections of beer, and the menu choices are sure to fill you up. Started with the Cauliflower pakora nicely fried and spiced. Next came the fish and chips. Crushed peas accompanied the fish that tasted like it just came out of the garden. On a whim, my wife and I stopped by the Blackbird. A serendipitous choice. This place looks exactly like an English Pub should look, at least an upscale one. I ordered the Frontier Cod and Chips, another bout of serendipity (11.95 Sterling, about $14.50). The very generous cod filet was neatly beer-battered and perfectly prepared, the fish being flakey and moist, and the batter crisp. The 'chips', which closely resembled french fries, I would grade A+, being nicely shaped and cut, and not oversalted or greasy in the least. A side of garden peas was included, generous in quantity, and garden fresh, steamed to perfection with skins that snapped and a center that was exceptionally tasty. Fresh, being the operative descriptor. Also included was a good tartar sauce, ketchup and vinegar in a stylish bottle. Talk about a great presentation ! Oh, and they had Veltin's on draft, a superb and refreshing beer. I asked our server for her boss, and told the manager how pleased I was with the dish. She said she would pass that compliment on to the kitchen. Which by the way, was downstairs, the food to be served being delivered via dumbwaiter. We returned for breakfast the following morning, and I had two perfectly scrumptious Eggs Benedict and pretty decent (for England) coffee. Our luck was definitely holding. We went for brunch, with the intent of getting a decent full English breakfast. A little side of bacon and avacado toast rounded out our meal. Not sure if it's an English thing or just this specific restaurant but they didn't have any hard brunch drinks...ie. Mimosas, Bloody Mary etc. But you could get beer starting at 10:00! To be fair, it's pretty tough to mess this up what we ordered, so I don't have anything negative to say. The atmosphere is very homey, and seems like what an English pub would look like if you had a foreigner design and decorate it. My husband had two different mini pies (beef & onion; steak) and they were really great- filling was very flavorful & the crust was very tasty. In the words of Paul Hollywood, 'It was a good bake.' I really enjoyed my meal here. I had wild mushroom soup - large portion served with toast and good butter. Then the chicken and ham hock pie, which makes all other chicken pies look, well... worse. The Blackbird was our very first foray into the world of English pubs. Just down the road from Earl's Court Station, The Blackbird, with its dark wood interior, had a cozy, old feel that made me feel 'at home'. We opted to sit in the dining area in back - a little quieter than the bustling bar area - at a nice little table in the corner. Being a little clueless and still quite jet-lagged, we did not order the proper pub way, which is directly up at the bar. Fortunately, the woman taking care of the tables waited on us and the other foreigners in normal restaurant fashion. Service was slow and somewhat inattentive, but this is not a standard restaurant, and thus we had to shift our expectations. The pies are really good here. My husband opted for The Blackbird House Pie, which featured steak, while I ordered the venison and prune pie. Both delicious - they use a flaky, crisp, buttery crust and the fillings were very hearty. Each pie came with mash (mashed potatoes) and carrots. Plenty to warm and fill you up! Despite being full, we ordered dessert anyway. Sticky toffee pudding and tea, which complemented each other well. A great place to experience the pub culture of London. read more

You know you love a place when you visit it almost daily during your stay in a city. The Blackbird was that place for us in London. My husband went our first night while I was off cavorting at Harry Potter Studios, but I was there every day after that until the day we left. Fuller's puts out some good brews and when you're frequenting a pub not far from the actual brewery itself, you know your beverage of choice is going to be fresh. Seeing the pies pass by every time we were there, we knew where we wanted to spend our last dinner in London. We couldn't decide on just one pie, so we ordered the pie sampler board so we could try a little bit of each offering. Five golden brown pillows from heaven arrived with a magical baby pitcher of gravy and a side of chips. Each pie was bursting with flavor: house pie (steak with Stilton & white wine gravy), steak & ale pie, cock-a-leekie pie, lamb & stout pie, and pork pippin pie. Each packed a full punch and warmed us from the inside out. It's hard to find places in the states that mimic the atmosphere of an English pub. We lucked out that we weren't staying far from here so this became our regular hangout during our stop. The staff was friendly & great with making recommendations when you couldn't decide exactly what beer you wanted. The patrons - some obvious regulars - were a great crowd to be a part of. During our trip to London this was one of the places we stopped at for a late night dinner. We met some great friends here, everyone in this place was super friendly. We rather felt cheated when we realised they (with no guilt) gave us cheap non-popular pale ales instead of ESB, thinking we would not know the difference.
