Trish was so patient with me and all my questions and so patient with my chubby boy and I appreciated it so much. I got picture and video updates from her and when I came home, he acted as if I had just come back from work - not a 4 day vacation, so I think Trish made him feel like everything was normal. I literally do not book tickets until after I have confirmed she is available to look after him. We have a senior kitty (aka Complicat) who needs supplements and medications, which he doesn't like. He also needs tons of cuddles and love, which he adores. I needed someone with the experience to be a surrogate mom when I can't be here to give him his meds and know how to look out for trouble spots while still giving him his pets and chin scratches. Trish fits the bill. She's totally calm about giving my kitty his syringes so he stays happy and healthy. She also really loves hanging out with animals, petting them and spending time just being with them. I love the texts and photos I get to let me know my how my lil guy is doing when I can't be there. Plus she's just a really awesome, funny and genuine human being.

When we adopted her July of 2011, thanks to David S.'s recommendation, she was just over a pound and tiny. The vet said he doubted she was a full eight weeks and she was a tad underweight but she had been spayed and her little baby belly had a little tiny stitch in it which healed nicely. She had a little bit of a goopy eye that she got drops for and it cleared up. Our vet gave her the initial exam for free because she was a rescue and gave her a clean bill of health. We began the fatten-up-baby-Leeloo project and now she is still small, but her proper, almost adult weight. Let's just say, she is the prefect match for our family and my heart is warmed every single time I see her especially when she crawls on my chest to wake me in the morning to point out the fact she is a Supreme Being - the Fifth Element and needs chicken. I hardly remember life without her now.

We applied that night, someone reached out within a couple of hours, and by the next day, he was a part of our family. We've had him for two weeks, and he's amazing. So nice to have the dogs in foster care before you get them. It allows the foster to really get to know the dog's personality better than if they're in a shelter, so they can help match the right dog to the right person/family. Love our sweet Gaucho!

However, sometimes you just have to go…read morewith your gut, and my gut told me getting a dog from My Fairy Dawg Mother was the right decision. This is a long one, so stick with me here.... I happened to be on Facebook one afternoon after having a suddenly clear schedule, and boom! This ADORABLE little face popped up in my feed. I felt like the Grinch, my heart swelling up to three times its normal size. I wanted, no, NEEDED this puppy. I don't know what I was thinking. I had a senior cat, 2 other dogs, was recovering from a severe injury, and was also a full time graduate student in Boulder. Yeah. But that FACE. It spoke to me. After discussing it with my husband, we decided it would be worth making the effort to add to our family. We contacted MFDM, and put in our application. Sadly, the little face we fell in love with went to a family that same day. We were CRUSHED. Lets recap: Thursday - no interest in getting a new dog. Friday - fall in love with dog. Saturday - learn dog is not available. Be sad. Sad sad sad. Sunday morning, we were still sad....and then my phone rang. It was the Fairy Dawg Mother herself!!! She was calling to let me know that the little face I fell in love with was being returned to his foster home, because he wasn't a fit for the family that wanted him originally. My husband and I were OVERJOYED. This wasn't a simple "ok, lets go see him" - we KNEW he was meant to be ours. We drove to the foster's home that afternoon, and welcomed our new handsome boy into our lives. Now - it's easy enough to say that it's a great story to meet the dog we love. But even better, here is what made it worth adopting from MFDM: 1. The focus is on finding the RIGHT home for the dog. When my boy's potential parents decided he wasn't the right fit, MFDM took him back ASAP. 2. Foster care, not shelter care. The dogs brought under the MFDM umbrella are immediately cared for in homes, given training, and integration into a pack. This is good, because that means they don't suffer any more. Many of the dogs are rescued from high stress/high kill shelters. It's a lot of work to go from that environment to a house/family setting. 3. The rescue is small and personalized. No large corporate style structure here, where checkboxes and numbers are the primary motivation. They are all about the dogs. 4. Small, but professional. Each dog is microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered, and all pet parents are advised about responsible pet ownership. When you adopt from MFDM, you become a part of their family, whether you want to or not! They are here for the dogs, first and foremost. Their adoption fees are $150 to $175 and they cover the neutering and care the pet has received. They are not operating to make money. Susan and her volunteers travel all over to rescue animals who are at risk for being put down. Susan even travels to Mexico to pick up unwanted pets. The animals stay with Susan and volunteer foster families. It takes a lot of selflessness to take a pet into your house and give it love and take care of it and then send it off to a new family. I really appreciate Susan taking such good care of our new baby Luke. We have had him for about a month and he is already best pals with our other dog Leia. Yes...they are named Luke and Leia. Susan saves pets from the Dumb Friends League, which is a kill shelter. Don't go and buy a pet from a pet store where their future is secure, save a pet who really needs your love.
