I posted about her in anticipation of her appearance on the adoption page. Their Instagram reposted my story days before she was put down.

In March 2025, I brought a stray Australian Shepherd, whom I named Joni, to Humane Colorado after she was abandoned in my neighborhood. She had been tethered outside for several nights with no shelter or adequate food. The night after I brought her in, there was a frost and temperatures dropped below freezing. I truly believed I was doing the right thing to protect her. Joni was about two years old, bright, affectionate, and gentle. I spent hours with her in my yard. She knew basic commands, played sweetly, and greeted my mom, boyfriend, and neighbors with calm friendliness. She was clearly a good dog who had been let down. I took her to "Humane" Colorado thinking she'd have the best shot at adoption. She had no microchip, so I surrendered her--believing it meant she would be cared for and placed in a new home, I mean who wouldn't want her? She was absolutely gorgeous. At intake, I was told I couldn't leave my contact info for any potential owners that might claim her from lost and found to tell them how I found her. I was not given a copy of the "surrender agreement" that I was verbally read. I thought e**th was in the case of a something as extreme as a rabid or deadly dog, not a dog like Joni. I mean she was literally hiding under my partner and I's seat in the intake room panting in fear, not engaging. I was told she'd be listed on the Lost & Found page for 3 days, then the Adoption page. She was, in fact, listed on the Lost & Found page--but she never made it to the Adoption page. I checked both pages multiple times a day. When I called to the shelter to follow up, I was told she had been put down six days after intake, following two behavioral evaluations. I went on-site to get more info on what happened. According to her intake transcript, she had barked and jumped at staff--a normal response for an anxious dog in a stressful environment. These actions were interpreted as behavioral red flags. The clerk I spoke to kept reiterating that "legally, we can't do anything with them for five days," as if that alone explained or justified the lack of transparency and the rushed decision to be put down. When I questioned the outcome, a staff member said, "Yeah, but unfortunately, you guys did bring her to a shelter that is really big, we..." implying that space and capacity played a role in her fate. Joni was killed under the guise of "behavioral issues," when in truth, she was a victim of an overwhelmed shelter system. She needed time, decompression, and compassion--not judgment in a chaotic setting she didn't understand. I believed I was giving her the best chance. Instead, she was gone in less than a week. Humane Colorado must do better. Clearer communication with the public, transparency around e*th*nasia and behavior evaluations, and more humane intake practices are urgently needed.

Instructions for their walk in hours

They're the best, most thorough vet in Denver. However, their phone system either doesn't work, or they pretend they don't receive messages because they're so severely understaffed. They have walk in hours, but you better be in the parking lot by 7am. Ask for the day off from work. Be prepared to spend up to 6 hours in your vehicle for a vet to finally see your pet. Call their phone number and do NOT hang up until they get to you. They won't call back so don't leave a message even though the voice response system says so. Their voice response system doesn't work. It will take an hour or two waiting, so bring a charger for your phone. Get comfy. Bring a book or something. You pay with lots of money for quick service at a regular, vet or you pay with your time at DFL. Everything they did for my cat to finally determine he has stones: X-rays Ultrasound Full health exam where they found a heart murmur An antibiotics shot good for 2 weeks Pain meds Vaccinations An overnight stay at the clinic I left with a prescription to purchase special food for him, pain meds for 2 weeks, and his tag and paperwork saying he's vaccinated I was charged $170 for everything. This facility is a godsend.

Since his visit upon rescue Orange Boy is living his best life. Indoors! And he doesn't mind it one bit.

The director said the cat she was interested in wasn't up for adoption yet and she would have to wait. After many days of my mom calling and talking to the lady she basically said that the cat was already hers she just had to wait for him to be available. Today my mom called the shelter again and the director said THAT THEY GAVE THE CAT AWAY!!!! my mom was so devastated. We just lost our family dog and she was so excited and looking forward to getting a new cat. The director said it was because they had heard my mom say she was going to make it an outdoor cat, WHICH IS COMPLETELY FALSE. first, my mom would never do that. She specifically wants a cuddly indoor kitty as a companion, second the shelter specifically said she cant have an outdoor cat and my mom agreed with that part of the contract. It makes absolutely no sense. I could tell from the very beginning something was off about this rescue and I was right. I'm not sure what they're doing over there but whatever it is it's not good. We will probably be getting in contact with a lawyer. DO NOT ADOPT FROM HERE!!!

I looked for weeks on all of the shelters websites and almost every dog I was interested in was here at Boulder Valley. All the staff members are helpful and sweet; they answered all my questions and even answered the phone a few minutes after closing to help me. Then I found Zeus. Looking through their website, I stumbled upon him and knew I had to meet him. So I played hooky from work, loaded up my husband, roommate, and her dog and headed out. They were more than happy to have my husband and I meet Zeus one on one and then move him to the big pin out front to meet my roommates dog. From there, my husband and I decided to sit on it over night. The next day, I called and placed a hold on Zeus and then drove that following afternoon to go and get him. The paperwork took about 15 minutes to complete and the staff were so excited to bring him out to me to go home. I went from heartbroken and feeling like we'd never find a dog to walking out of Boulder Valley overjoyed. Thank you guys again for everything. The store has various brands and types of pet food, treats, and toys. She also has a few adoptable cats and dogs that were obviously given up by their uncaring people parents. The owner is a vet tech and a vegetarian, and she seems to care deeply about animals. The shop is not as big or as fancy as Mouthfuls pet boutique down the street but it carries the dog food we buy. Nature's Variety is a great natural dry dog food. Our dog loves all the flavors... and while it is more expensive than grocery store dog food, because the food has less cheap "fillers", dogs actually eat less than they would of other "cheaper" brands. So, the price is actually only slightly more more expensive when you factor in the whole bag lasts longer than the same size of cheaper brands. http://www.naturesvariety.com/ 4 1/2 stars because she cares about the animals!

You can view animals available for adoption- usually cats or small dogs- every day during store hours. The store owner describes Planet Pethood as, "a politically correct pet store." I can't justify giving any less than four stars to a cute shoppette that combines support for pet adoption and rescue with a fairly nice selection of foods, treats, toys, leashes, and everything you need for your dog or cat; and Planet Pethood fully deserves the four stars it's getting. I do, however, have some minor gripes. For starters, both the store itself and the website are unclear on exactly what Planet Pethood's involvement with Planned Pethood, the low-cost vet down the street, is. Nowhere can I find an actual percentage donated to a specific organization, and as a rescue person that sets off a serious case of nerves. The website describes the store owner as having her own rescue- but where is the name, the 501(c)3 status, the official website? Also many of the links point to Planned Pethood, but nowhere does the store owner declare an official affiliation. My spidey senses would be beeping if it weren't for the clear support of rescues via adoptable animals in store. I'd love to know if this store donates its profits, and if so, what percentage and TO WHOM; also, how closely, exactly, it is related to Planned Pethood. Second, I have a few snipes to take at the dog food selection. Canidae and Timber Wolf are excellent choices, but where is Innova Evo? I wanted a bag of Innova Evo Red Meat, but left empty handed because it doesn't appear to be on the shelves. And Avo Derm? It uses ground corn in several formulas- NOT exactly up to my pet food standards. Breeder's Choice is similarly well packaged but lacking in actual quality. However, for the slightly less picky than myself, Planet Pethood seems to be a nice pet supply store with many good choices and a true desire to support rescue and adoption.

They have no comfortable place to sit (skinny…read morebackless stools), for folks to fill out the electronic adoption form which takes a minimum of half an hour. Then, after you as a customer, are kind enough to provide them with all this detailed information -- they state you will hear from them in 48 hours. WE DIDN'T. When they finally sent an email they stated that we would hear something from them within the NEXT 72 hours (business days). WE DIDN'T. I guess they justify their extremely rude treatment by their last sentence which basically says if you hear nothing from them, you can assume you did not get the cats you attempted to adopt! That is inconsiderate and rude! Their response to this review was they "claimed" they DID tell us there were other people ahead of us trying to adopt the same cat. UNTRUE! (Remember- there were two of us and you did NOT communicate this information to either one of us!) But all readers have to do is look at the multiple other reviewers who also said Almost Home has very poor communication. And, the manager's response was to agree they do have and continue to have this rude policy of failing to notify! I still say if people put in half an hour to answer all their multiple questions then surely they can send out a two minute text informing people they did not get the cat. I was even sorrier that the manager did not agree that they are rude and that in the future they will improve by switching over to a more informative process for the kind people who come to them to adopt their kitties. It appears too many of the cats at Almost Home must be adopted out as a pair which probably decreases their chance of adoption. There was a male volunteer there that seemed like he needs an education about what to say to potential adoptees. He wanted to tell us about THE ORGANIZATION from their point of view instead of providing what he should be saying to customers which is that the adoption fees are very high because it includes neuter/spay, shots and microchip. That is what people want to know so it would be nice if you spent five minutes (or less) teaching them this. As a pair of women with great veterinary care history, animals with longevity, an excellent income, our own home (main home in Colorado and vacation home in Texas) and excellent credit history, it makes me believe if they turn us down, then Almost Home has extremely poor judgement! All of our pets have always been provided with excellent vet care including all shots and even dental care. Our last kitty lived to 14 and only passed away due to renal failure. DO NOT GO TO ALMOST HOME thinking you will be able to adopt soon. They drag out the process more than what is reasonable. ALSO, DO NOT EXPECT GOOD COMMUNICATION or you will be disappointed!
