I was attracted by The Blue Water House website and looked forward to staying in the eclectic quirky place that is walking distance to town and the bay. This faded quickly at the entry level with a strong smell of wet dog, followed by no cooling on the interior. The pictures on the internet are dated and things are cluttered now. The room I booked was not the room held, but since it was a weekday I could have my pick of the 3 front rooms, none of them the one I booked (?). The room was clean and there was AC that, when turned On, over time cooled the room down. During the night I was awakened by the heat and found the AC was not cycling On unless the ceiling fan was On (?). There are plentiful sugary and baked goods snacks and soda in the breakfast room for anytime. The fresh fruit though was over or under ripe. The morning coffee was not hot. Breakfast did happen and I was able to enjoy a wide selection of melon and berries with yogurt that was put out buffet style. The eggs requested, came pretty much as desired. The first morning I found out the free bike option was no longer available. I must have read about bikes in the reviews but now find they are no longer available in the fine print of the booking. My pleasure in staying here always fell short. I would have enjoyed a cookie cutter motel as much. I suppose I wanted the accommodation to be as attentive as the decor pictured. Both Rick and Tony not only ensure your stay at The Blue Water house is one you will fully enjoy, but they also will ensure your choice of activities around Lewes will be ones you will enjoy. This was our 3rd time here and we are already planning to return in a few months. We like to try to get the Hemmingway Suite (the largest but also most expensive room) when we stay. I don't ever write yelp reviews but couldn't resist. This is a fantastic place to stay. The home is beautiful and covered in art. Rick was so extremely welcoming and kind. Tony was awesome, helpful and makes a great breakfast! Thank you for providing such a glorious stop for people from all over to relax and enjoy. The charismatic experience is one of a kind that you will never forget. I hope to come by again. I wish the world was more like this home. There several great restaurants nearby. First time staying here. Found out about it through Faithful Friends animal shelter silent auction. First thing I will say is the place was spotless. Everyone is really really nice. The decorations were absolutely amazing. Every time we walk down the stairs into another room or outside we noticed new things. Definitely an artist's paradise. Five minutes walking distance to the beach and 15 minutes to get into Rehobeth. We had an absolute blast. Plus they had an awesome dog who loved belly rubs and several feral kitties that were very friendly outside. Breakfast was delicious. Didn't use the bikes but wide selection. We plan on going back. The best of the best!! Rick, the host was super as well as Cony who prepared all the food for breakfast.Delicious and makes the best blueberry pancakes. The room, the Hemingway was soooo nice and comfortable. The bed gave my wife and I the greatest rest. We found Blue Water on the internet. You really. Never know what type of establishment you are getting but we hit the lottery. Arrived on Friday. , July 29 th and were greeted by Rick the owner. We checked in and Rick insisted he would get our luggage and bring it in. The large screen Tv was great and we were able to watch movies on AMC. We also had the news on CNN. We had our dog with us and Rick's dogs, Remmy. And Ringo made our dog , Remmy feel very comfortable with their friendliness., The weather was so hot we couldn't take our dog on the beach at all but we took our dog to various restaurants that allowed dogs.I could write a lot more but suffice it to say if you're looking for the perfect B and B in the Delaware beaches the Blue Water House should be your destination. The only bad thing about our vacation there was we had to leave but rest assured we have plans to go back in October when the weather is a little cooler so we can take our dog to the beach. Blue water house review My wife and I stayed in the Blue Parrot room June 28 before taking the Cape May Lewes Ferry. We loved The Blue Water House. Top amenities that made us say "we are coming back": chilled water bottles, loaner bicycles ( to peddle around town, to peddle onto the nearby paved rails-to-trails, to peddle on the paved trails of the nearby Cape Henlopen State Park ) , easy walking / biking distance to downtown Lewes, the outdoor patio with lounge chairs for quiet evenings, the basket of "toiletries you forgot" like toothbrushes, etc ( we didn't need it but it was nice to see ) , the breakfast room that was full of snacks throughout the day , the made to order breakfast. The onsite manager ( can't remember his name ) was friendly and accommodating. Our bedroom and bathroom were comfortable and clean. Really enjoyed our stay, and we want to come back. read more

My wife and I traveled to Lewes for the weekend in October 2018... to see our daughter competing in a race, and to ride bikes on the local trails. The Blue Water House was a splendid little find!! We are Lewes veterans -- regulars at the Cape Henlopen Inn, Captain's Quarters, and the Beacon, and have stayed near Rte.1 at some rather forgettable dives. BWH was a true find -- close to the beach... off the beaten track... "home-y" atmosphere... SWEET!!! Yes, the decor is... "unique"... but the host Rick and his staff are helpful and wonderful, and the breakfast was spectacular!! (Bravo, my friend!!) We'll be back -- we travel to Lewes at least once or twice per year, and the Blue Water House is wonderful. read more

We had a fun time staying at this quirky little B&B right in town. Warning: This ain't grandma's bed and breakfast! Hip and funky decor will make any artist feel at home. Our room was the Hemingway Room (see photos) which seemed right out of a safari. Good size room, huge bathroom with a double head shower, and walk in closet. Yes, a considerable walk-in for a three-day holiday. Great breakfast room with fresh eggs or french toast cooked to order. Coffee was good too (hey, I know coffee is important). Another enjoyable stay with host Rick! Stayed in The Hemingway room and it was awesome, comfortable and spacious! We also enjoyed our breakfasts with so many friendly and interesting couples. Walking to the beach at the end of the street with chairs and towels provided make traveling so easy. We also enjoyed wine on the backyard deck as the sun went down, and you can't beat the walking distance to the charming downtown. GOT BIT BY BED BUGS AND HAD MY JEWELRY STOLEN FROM MY ROOM WHILE STAYING HERE. Had to leave early in a rush after throwing all of my stuff into trash bags because of bed bugs!!! Had to stay in another motel enroute home after cutting my vacation short and get to a laundermat to wash everything in HOT water and dry with HOT heat to kill any bed bugs and not bring them home. Left without checking my jewelry and when I got home I discovered that 3 gold necklaces and a gold ring had been stolen from my room (no safe) while I was away for a few hours the night before. Rick and the Blue Water House are absolutely great! My girlfriend and I went there over Memorial Day weekend to have some good quiet time at the beach without the craziness of Ocean City or Rehoboth. It was our first time at a B&B, and we had a great time! Rick (and his dog Lola) were around whenever we needed them, and had delicious breakfast in the morning and as much beer and/or wine as we wanted in the evening. I was even able to make a deal to stay until Tuesday to avoid the traffic! As the other reviews state, the beach is SUPER close and pretty private, and there are beach towels and bikes to borrow from the Blue Water House. The entrance to the beach closest to the Blue Water House is pretty far down from the main entrance of the beach, which made for super small crowds in our portion of the beach. The decor was a little kitschy, but that's as much to be expected. The room was nice, but the walls were a little thin. On the 2nd floor there's a huge porch that runs around the entire house, with each room having a little corner. We were lucky to get the corner with a swinging bench, and it was a great way to start the morning! All in all, if you're looking for a great quiet B&B in Lewes, this is your place! read more

I love this place! I'll definitely stay here again whenever I return to Lewes, DE. This is cozy little bed and breakfast with funky decor. I stayed in the 'Key west' suite. It was spacious. The room comes with a bed (either queen/full not sure) and a little futon that pulls out as a bed. Since I was sharing a room with two other people, they were nice enough to bring us a cot so that we each had our own bed in our room. This place offered beach chairs, beach towels, and boogie boards for free which was great because we didn't have to spend money renting them. We also had free breakfast between 8am-10:30am. The cook was nice enough to accommodate everyone. We had a bottle of Merlot (courtesy of Blue Water House) while we enjoyed the view from our room balcony. The rooms have a TV, however no cable which is a bummer. However, they do offer free wifi. The staff was super nice. Rick really tries hard to please everyone. This is a great place. You really get a bang for your buck. It was worth every penny. read more

I see mixed reviews from a couple of years ago, but from what I can tell, Rick left and returned and has been busy ever since getting the house "back in order" because there was NADA to complain about on our 2 night stay this past weekend. The BWH is "kitchy", colorful and very Key West, which is the theme of the B and B. Rick is an excellent host and never stopped asking if he could do or get something for us. There was plenty of parking, a relaxing outdoor patio with under cover bike racks where we could secure our own bikes. But he had some nice beach cruisers available if you don't bring your own. Beach chairs, umbrellas, sunscreen, water, snacks, fresh fruit , wine, etc. are all available. Our room was large, clean, a very comfy bed, flat screen TVs, a fridge and our view of our balcony gave us a beautiful sunset. Breakfast was hot and cold foods and was simple but oh so very delicious!! OH! And if you are there in inclement weather, or even just in the evening, the 3rd floor is open and "loft like" with books, a TV, sofa, tables, games and a view on all four sides. My husband and I have stayed at the Blue Water House twice now and loved it. -We stayed in the Hemingway Suite, which is quiet/private and clean. It has its own refrigerator, tons of bottled water and large closet area. -Rick, the owner and his dog Lola, are wonderful hosts. -Breakfasts are hot and cold with a nice mix of healthy or hearty food options. The kitchen is also always open if you want to grab a snack or drink. Bottled water is provided all day long. -It's a 5-8 minute walk to the beach and less if you drive. The Blue Water House also provides beach umbrellas and chairs, which are nice to have. -It's an easy ten minute walk to the quaint shops and restaurants in the "heart" of Lewes I highly recommend the Blue Water House. It's kitschy decor is fun, the stay is pleasant and I can't think of a single thing I'd complain about. read more

What a great place!! I could spend hours looking at the decorations. We stayed in the Little Torch room. We had our own bathroom and shower. The bed was very comfortable and the ac worked like a charm. Breakfast in the morning was very tasty. Sunday's french toast was amazing!! I love interesting b&bs, because I feel you can get so much more for your money and more importantly, it's not the same old cookie cutter Hilton. We stayed in the hemmingway suite. Beautiful room, huge! Great hot breakfast for both days we were there and the kitchen was stocked with wine, that you could help yourself to. Best of all, walk to downtown lewes or to lewes beach. Cape henlopen state park is 2 miles and rehoboth is close as well. If you want a relaxing weekend getaway, this place is for you. read more

We planned our trip to Lewes at the last minute, and having never been there before we didn't know much about the options. We were looking for something interesting and romantic, but not too extravagant. The Blue Water House turned out to be just what we were looking for. (Plus, they had a room available!) The location is ideal: an easy walk to the beach or the downtown area, but far enough from both that it's very quiet. Bicycles are available for guests' use as well. Our room was spacious and comfortable, handsomely decorated in homage to Ernest Hemingway - a contrast to the casual, whimsical (but not cutesy) decor of the rest of the house. The manager's cred as a pastry chef is evident in the breakfasts. We had lovely fruit-stuffed French toast one morning, and on the next a fabulous egg souffle with vegetarian sausage (yes!) and blue potato home fries. Both were delicious and beautiful - a nice start to each day. Fruit, granola, yogurt and cereal were also available. Neither of us had ever stayed at a B&B before, but we both loved the experience. We look forward to returning to Lewes, and we'll plan far enough in advance to make sure there's a room open at the Blue Water House when we do. read more

The Blue Water House is a casual B&B just a few blocks from the center of Lewes. I visited in October during the off-season; off-street parking, hot breakfast, and unlimited bottles of water were included in the rate. I had booked the Key Largo room but was given the Key West room, presumably due to a technical error with the online reservations system. The Key West was spacious and brightly decorated, with a bed, desk, small refrigerator, and sitting area, as well as a small private bathroom. Sliding doors led to a corner deck that overlooked the front of the property and beyond that, the bay. The hosts are accommodating and friendly, and the atmosphere has a convivial family-style air about it. read more

My (brand new) husband and I spent a whole week here for our honeymoon and I honestly don't think we could have asked for a more romantic, low-key getaway. Rick and Lola were amazing hosts! We purposely made no plans or itinerary, and thank goodness, because there is never a shortage of things to do in the area, right within walking or biking distance. Rick makes everyone breakfast in the morning, usually served with a few jokes on the side :) The atmosphere is comfortable, laid back, and full of amenities for his guests, including self serve wine and beer. Key West only a ferry ride away! You will not find a more relaxing stay and accommodating host anywhere. Just a five minute walk to the canal front, restaurants and shops of "downtown" Lewes. Plenty of bikes provided by Rick along with all types of snacks, bottled water, wine, beer, hammocks, private balconies, nine coolly themed and appointed rooms and common areas, and so much more. Great price! Just two minutes from the ferry, the beach and Cape Henlopen State Park. We cannot wait to go back and hope to be regulars. Excellent Place!! read more

I stayed at the Blue Water House this weekend with my daughters. We were so impressed with the cleanliness, atmosphere, and location. Rick was attentive to his guests' needs, provided tasty breakfasts and snacks and beverages at all times. There were bikes and beach items available for our use. The décor was unique, bright and fun. I would recommend staying in a room on the third floor so that you can enjoy the balcony. I have discovered a gem at the beach and will return next year. read more

I booked online for a 2 day holiday weekend and it went through only to have Ali call the next day to say we had to book 3 days. In this day with technology it's hard to imagine that they call their guests to say they can't have the reservation. It should just be unavailable to book. Then I book for 3 days and decide to cancel well within the 30 day requirement for a full refund and they send me a letter saying that one of my nights deposit will be returned IF they book the room. I get very upset and they say you won't be charged because of the 30 day requirement but yet they think it's ok to send out an email stating otherwise? They also couldn't understand my anger (expressed in an email that said if they charge my credit card I would take them to court) and thanked me for cancelling since I wouldn't be a good guest according to the owner Rick. Both Rick and Ali were very were rude and unapologetic in this instance and could take no responsibility for their part in the situation. read more
