If you're in Downtown Scranton (which is a huge IF), definitely park your butt on a Bog bar stool at some point. It's like that cool college bar you never had at your school. In fact, it's the grad student bar you never had (perhaps because you never went to grad school). Cool bar tender, esoteric tunes on the juke box, and a mighty, mighty fine beer board. The atmosphere is dim enough to be cool but not gloomy. You can come here to think without brooding (though you can brood, too). Set your heart on a Bell's Two Hearted and you won't be disappointed. We actually came for a film screening hosted by one of the local characters, and it was kind of a small blast. Lovely. read more

The city of Scranton has more bars than potholes and The Bog ranks somewhere near the middle of the pack. This is not my favorite bar though I have spent many nights there mainly because of its convenient location. The Bog has gained some notoriety because of a brief appearance on NBC's The Office. I've met some very nice people at this bar who I still count among my friends to this very day, but this is also where the wannabes of Scranton hang out. The place is overrun with pretentious hipsters constantly mentioning their "band" or latest art project. The service is slow, the bathrooms dirty, and the bar so cramped you can barely breathe. Still, The Bog has its charms. I did enjoy the monthly Panked! themed dance parties and pub trivia nights. read more

If you're looking for that classic hometown bar, this is it. The bouncer is one of the sweetest guys I've met, and remembered who I was just after the second time of meeting him. The beers on tap are great, with changes every time I've gone. Prices are very good for what you're getting, and they never skimp on the alcohol. The bartenders are all super friendly and make sure everyone is satisfied with their drinks. Good music is always playing from the juke box, and I've been able to meet new and interesting people every time I come here. Prices are good, so it normally is the first or last stop when I'm going out in downtown Scranton. Street parking can be tough to find because of its location, but it is within walking distance from a bunch of bars and restaurants. read more

A pretty decent (yet finicky) jukebox, solid selection of beers, cozy atmosphere and great service even on a busy night made The Bog pretty okay in my book. The bartender who waited on me had an awesome memory for the list of beers I threw at him, and he even took my request for an Irish coffee without batting an eye. Come to think of it, he also helped me with the jukebox when it ate my money; fixing it and becoming my Saturday night superhero. Narrow bar, but lots of friendly patrons (probably regulars) who were friendly enough to let me skooch in next to them to order rounds. Five people drinking, and every round was less than $20. I get mad at this place a lot. I miss the old bar. the old benches were great (long wood benches ran the length of the wall with old wood tables. it use to be a real pub.). The added 20 taps in the past, hmmm it must be over a year now. as apposed to the 5 taps they use to have (2 were Guinness). So the taps are great! great draft and beer selection. one of the best in the city, 3rd best to be exact. the pros- they have local bands play there a lot, best open mic in NEPA, when there is no band, there is no cover (unlike many other Scranton bars), they host a ton of great events. Brian, one of the owners, is a great guy, as well as the rest of the staff. Great juke box, and cheap beer. the cons: they recently (past few months) added a flat screen TV. now don't get me wrong, i love TV, and i love big flat screens, i want a bigger one myself, but The Bog is not a flat screen kind of place (run on). It often makes the bar way to bright. the bar is normally perfectly dark and cozy, then BAM the TV brightens up the whole place and you are blind. they cleaned up the place as i said earlier, removing some of the old great character the bar had. now there are a lot more U kids there bringing shinny shirts, loud talking, and complaining that they don't have The right beer. side bar: IT'S THE BOG! THEY HAVE EVERYTHING! DON'T COMPLAIN THEY DON'T HAVE YOU CHEAP BEER! THEY HAVE PBR! (sorry) there are still a ton of great locals that go there all the time, but many have moved on. My theory is there are now to many U kids (the reason i go there less often) All in all, this is a great bar, and my favorite in the city. you'll meet some great people there, may be punch a U kid in the face, or have some crazy drunk kid steal your hat then smash a pint glass. One of the three bars in Scranton I like! I'm a fancy-drinking lady when I do drink ( which is rare ), and the Bog has my beloved St-Germain, Lambic, and sometimes, Cointreau! They also have many beers and do special vintage cocktail nights. I used to love it here more in like 2007-08, but I rarely go out in Scranton anymore. Still, good, hipster-y crowd - though I hate it when the U kids and the dudebros visit. The jukebox rules. Panked! dance parties are really good. Staff is super-nice. Small bar, seating at a premium. There's really not a lot bad that you can say about The Bog. To me, it's more of what I think an Irish pub should look like than the "other" Irish pubs downtown. It's located on the hippest block in the downtown, which is growing to be the arts scene in Scranton. Nearby is the Test Pattern theatre, a used record store, a Thai restaurant and various other interesting establishments. On a typical night, I'd say that you're going to walk in to a dimly lit, small pub. You're going to hear some really great music playing from the jukebox, anything from Johnny Cash to The Greatful Dead to Tom Waits. The bartenders are extremely friendly as will be most everyone in the bar. It's a great place to just hang out. You're not really going to find anyone there trying to start a fight, or anything, just have a good time. Some nights, there may be a live band on the small stage. There's a good selection of micro and import brews. It's definitely the place to be during the St. Patrick's Day festivities because of it's central location to everything and of course, it's an Irish bar. So, if you are reading this because you are visiting Scranton, or new to Scranton, or even live in Scranton, but have never been to The Bog, I definitely recommend checking it out. read more

I walked into the Bog and the original Dawn of the Dead (1979) was on the TV. Ok.... I was extremely impressed with that alone and decided to stay for a drink. I looked around to scope out the clientele. College kids galore. It isn't necessarily a bad thing. I like to think that younger adults in college bring more culture to Scranton. Lets face it... Scranton needs to be introduced to the outside world. Burst the bubble. When going to a new establishment I usually order a mixed beverage first to test the bartender's "generosity". The gin and tonic was a little weak, but worth the money I paid. The beer selection was ok, nothing that really stood out. The music selection on the jukebox was ok. There were a few older songs that I haven't heard in a while that had my foot tapping. Apparently there are local bands that play. Unfortunately I didn't catch any that night, but its always a good thing to support local bands. The Bog is probably my favorite bar in Scranton. I'd go back if I'm in the neighborhood. read more

This place is great. This was the last stop on our bar crawl and the most memorable. If I lived closer to Scranton,The Bog would be my bar of choice. It's such a quaint, non-stereotypical bar. It's not exactly the hot-spot of downtown Scranton, but it's only a hop, skip, and a jump away! The Bog reminds me of a hole in the wall. It's skinny, yet goes back pretty far. When you see this place on the outside, it looks like a typical dive bar. But I have grown a liking to the atmosphere. The crowd you get is pretty consistent and it's always familiar faces. The bartenders are very personable and move swiftly to make sure everyone at the bar has a solid experience and gets their drinks when they need them. The drink menu is not particularly exhaustive and the space is relatively small, but the atmosphere and the crowd at The Bog make it a fantastic place to be a regular. I'd highly recommend this place if you're new to SWB area and looking to make new connections and new friends. If you go there a few times, you'll quickly start to see the same faces and make great connections and have excellent conversations and a great time. They also have DJ's that periodically play great music. Keep an eye out for those! I'd highly recommend checking The Bog out! read more

In a land of bars, this one stands out. NEPA is famous for a bar on every block. It's so bad, that you have to wait for someone to DIE to get a liquor license. This being said, there are only a few places I choose to drink in the area. The Bog is one of them ... I was introduced to this place by an ex just after having moved here from Oakland. Pining away for my beloved Ruby Room and Radio, the Bog was just the thing I needed. Small, cramped, sweaty and loud on the weekends. (They also USED to allow smoking, but alas they have now banned it inside.) The juke box has won best of the area awards years running for a reason. The selections are often mix tapes made by patrons and employees who all seem to have terrific taste. Add to that a selection of Jazz, Blues, Reggae, and 'hip' classics and you have a great night. (They are famous for removing titles that get played too often, so if you have a favorite track, don't play it twice a night.) Every once and a while a band will play and the bar has hosted a few all day festivals that were put on last summer by a Mr. Orner. The Scranton City Limits were four bands playing in the afternoon, mostly all locals. I've heard a rumor that they're thinking of doing it again, except this time it'd be an all day block party. There are apartments upstairs for the true fans, though whether or not they are renting right now, I have no idea. Having lived upstairs for a while, let me say that it can get brutal on your liver. However, nothing beats the trip home after an all nite session with the great people downstairs. Two flights of stairs and pass out. I have to say though, my favorite time to be there is the afternoon. I worked a block up last summer and I would come by afterward and have a beer. Usually Brian or Bill is behind the bar. You can sit and talk without having to scream. The jukebox is NOT on a 5 hour delay. I love this bar so much, that it was the first place my fiance and I went after I'd asked her to marry me. read more

Cool bar with a good beer selection, but the space is small with limited seating. Stopped in on a thursday night and it was pretty crowded. Its the type of a bar I'd stop at for a beer to start or finish the night, but probably not spend an evening here. I was very impressed with the number of beers on tap for such a small establishment. The sound system could use a major upgrade as all I could hear was the heavy beat of the bass speaker which was at floor level and none of the other speakers which were mounted way over head. read more

This is my first choice when going to a bar in Scranton. A big wooden bar reminiscent of The Saloon is WB (another great place). The Bog just has an intangible atmoshpere that is pleasant to hang in. My boyfriend & I visited Scranton this week, being his college town, & he has raved about this bar in many of his college stories. It was a #1 must-visit when in Scranton & I am so glad that we made it happen. Upon waking into The Bog you are met with a laid-back, comforting atmosphere filled with blues + country tunes. There happened to be live music when we visited last night, & the duo that played were extremely talented to say the least. The aesthetic of the bar is definitely eye catching with the bartenders dressed in white button downs + ties, yet still coming off as not being "overdressed." The decor fits the place perfectly featuring local art work. I loved the beer list as well and each beer we ordered was downed. I definitely will be making this a must-come-to each time we visit Scranton. I'm sold on this place. read more

I was in Scranton on business for a couple weeks and I'm glad I wandered in here. Looks like a hole in the wall dive from the outside, and it is, but that's what makes it great. Good, local crowd. A mix of students all the way on up to grey hair. Drinks were cheap, I drank through a trivia night on $20 a can of Modelo at a time. Only really got loud after what looked to be an intermural league of some kind from one of the colleges wandered in en masse but I didn't mind. Bar staff and even the guy at the door were friendly. Beer selection was bigger than you'd expect from a dive; mix of bottles, cans, and draught. Nothing super fancy/crafty but that's not what that crowd drinks though PA breweries were represented if you're looking for some local flavor. I'm only not giving the 5th star because they don't serve food, but you can bring your own in and eat. I brought a couple slices in and ate right at the bar, they were cool with it. That said, they also have an old-timey cigarette machine inside, and don't serve food, yet no one was smoking. I'm not sure of the rules on that, nor did I ask, so I can't definitely comment on smoking or not. I would recommend this place and I would stop in again if I'm in town. read more

The bartenders are always great, friendly and attentive. The beer selection is pretty decent as well as mixed drinks. The place is really small and seating limited though, but atmosphere is great and relaxing. The type of crowd is generally an acquired taste depending on when you go (whether it be packed with college students or hipsters in their sweater vests or whatever the kids are wearing these days). There's been times I've brought visiting friends and they've told me they've gotten weird vibes or felt like they were outsiders due to the kind of crowed, but once you get over it its totally fine. Don't be turned off by that its a great place. read more
