There were bugs crawling and jumping all over my legs after walking around here for 10 minutes. There's some kind of serious health code violations going on here for that to happen. There's a cat. The owner smokes in his open office on the first floor, and the air and books smell of it. It's very dark inside the store. You have to enter from the back of the store, which is very sketchy. It seems to be in a fairly bad neighborhood. This is one of the biggest used bookstores I've ever been in. I wanted to like it. Something is wrong here, though. Why buy thousands and thousands of brand new books only to leave them in a smoky, dusty, moldy place, such that you soon can't even tell they're new books? read more

Really eclectic store... so many books, fun artwork... Three floors packed... And I mean packed with a great variety. Shelves are bowed from the weight of books stacked close together...new and used. Jeff, the owner, is happy to help, knowledgeable and just a cool guy too. I love the third floor where different things can happen like poetry readings or live bands. I am a native Bostonian. I live in western Massachusetts. It's not merely that I've lived in a region with many great bookstores, it's that I live in a region where there are multiple bookstores with national reputations and Wikipedia articles. And in a blasted ruin of a downtown, with many buildings obviously boarded up for decades, I found the best used bookstore I've ever seen. We were in NF on vacation, and in planning the day's travel, I thought, eh, let's check out the local bookstores. So we planned on stopping here for a half hour before moving on to a couple of museums. I won't go into huge detail -- just read the reviews below for the friendliness of the owner, the sheer size of the place, and how it's organized -- or belabor bits like me wearing a sweatshirt my mother gave me 20+ years ago extolling books and cats, and the owner gleefully pointing out the T-shirt on display with the exact same logo HIS mother gave to HIM 20+ years ago. But the selection is gargantuan, and we only covered the first two floors. Just the new books and fiction sections cleaned out our discretionary budget for the trip, and we went well over it to boot. See, for one thing, the prices are staggering: used paperbacks go for a dollar or two apiece, prices I haven't seen for a couple decades at least. I got two almanacs for $5 apiece, one from 1959 and one from 1947. Picked out a new book for my wife for her upcoming birthday, and the owner giftwrapped it for me. So anyway: we wound up buying over $200 worth of books. Far, far too many for us to carry home on the train. No problem: the owner boxed them up for shipping, and we received them today, only three days after we bought them. He said he does a lot of business online, and is willing to look for books on his shelves and ship them. We likely won't get back to the area for a couple years, and will absolutely take advantage of this. I could not recommend this establishment more highly. (Really, folks, don't fret about the location: it's directly across the street from the police station.) read more

We used to go to a bookstore in North Tonawanda all the time, but they downsized to a smaller space in Boulevard Mall so I did a search online and found out about this place. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but it has a pretty impressive assortment of new books, especially children's books. You have to ask for access to the downstairs and upstairs areas with used books. It's cold and a little creepy, but that's part of the fun. I haven't visited upstairs yet, but I do wish the children's books downstairs were more organized. No complaints about service. Bonus star for the shop cat. I'm a sucker for shop cats. read more

Besides the actual falls, this was absolute my favorite part of our trip to Niagara. Book stores are always my favorite place to be but this specific book store is a special place. The sheer volume of books was overwhelming. There are 3 full floors of books. They even had a large vinyl record section. We browsed the store for quite a while and I feel like we probably didn't even see half of it because it's so large. But one of the best parts of the store is definitely the owner. He was so inviting and welcoming from the second we walked in. He gave us a tour of the building and pointed out each section to us. There were several musical instruments through the entire store and he encouraged the kids and I to try them all. He even had a theremin that we all got to play. He does events periodically that I will definitely be coming back for! He even had two little book store cats running around that were super friendly. I think I could have spent all day there! His store is definitely a gem and a must visit spot!! read more

Last week, while google-searching for something else, I came across an article about this store. Is this new? Nope, it's been existing in the falls for nearly a century. Suddenly I felt like I had just unlocked this new life-level where a giant book store had been existing all along in the general vicinity of me but somehow I couldn't see it, until now. To add to the mystic of this seemingly seldom mentioned place, it's practically mid-ghost town. Next to the Rapids Theater, it is otherwise nestled among an array of abandoned buildings that bare weather-faded traces of the names of stores past. Upon entering, a sign read, "No cell phones". The store extends farther back than it is wide. The ground floor is all new books with a nice selection of local books and a fairly large children's area. This is the floor where the workers stay along with two shop cats. A man asks if he can help me find anything and when I tell him this is my first time here, he offers to give me a tour. The downstairs or basement, is a maze of used non-fiction and the quantity of books is vast. The books are penciled marked and all pretty low priced. But they don't put much into keeping any sort of organization of the used books beyond categories, the proprietor explained. The hard cover biographies are alphabetized by who they are about. Not much else is in any type of order but is understandable considering the quantity. I had assumed that the no cell phone sign meant, no talking on phones but as I try to reference my to-buy list on goodreads, I find that the basement is a dead zone (just to add to the ambiance). Also, it's quite chilly. The upstairs is where they house the used fiction and sadly, I forgot to go explore up there because I had already spent so much time on the other two floors. I'll have to check that out next time. This place is probably full of treasures. There were old local cookbooks, the kind published by churches and community groups. There were even some old local yearbooks. The new books are cataloged but the used books are not. Go there to get lost for a few hours, not to find something specific. Give yourself time to explore. I don't get to The Book Corner nearly as often as I would like. This. Bookshop. Is. WONDERFUL. We have been coming to The Book Corner for years, and always love both the shopping experience, and our book finds we bring home from here. Now, to level-set expectations a bit, it is quite the hodgepodge of a shop. It is three sizable levels of new and used books all curated by a dedicated and incredibly friendly owner who is happy to help with any questions. For any new book purchases you need, The Book Corner is a great option to SHOP LOCAL! :-D The new book selection is sizable, or if something you want is not in stock, it can be ordered. But, in my humble opinion, exploring the used books is where it's at!! Both the second floor and the basement are full of used book treasures. The upstairs has several eclectically decorated rooms, each dedicated to a genre: a sci-fi/fantasy room, a mystery room, a classics room, a romance room, even a large print room, and more. The used books are organized well enough, some sections decently alphabetized by author, where if you are looking for something specific in the used stacks, it can sometimes be hunted down, depending how rare it is. On a recent Valentine's weekend visit with my husband, we spent an hour'ish poking around the store together, and both found a few sweet goodies. I snagged some used sci-fi, and a classic I've been wanting to own for a while (Abbot's Flatland). My husband grabbed a new book at the recommendation of the owner. And actually, I'm going to wrap up this review so I can get back to enjoying my books!! If you love to read, know someone who loves to read, sort of like to read, are literate at all, or want to learn how to read, all of the above should visit The Book Corner. Likely the most unique book store in the Buffalo Niagara area. It is HUGE, and so incredibly cool. New books are on the ground level. Now, the selection is eclectic. Not a lot of everything, but a little of everything and then some.(I bought a paper doll book of horror movie icons-top that.) The "Loft", is an incredible space with rooms and rooms of used books, some vinyl, plenty of seats to sit and read. It's like going into your Grandmas HUGE attic and finding endless treasures. (the bathrooms are on this level as well-you will need to ask for a key). The basement, another treasure trove of a space. Room after room of used books and some vinyl again. I am so thrilled to have such an interesting place to shop in Niagara Falls, NY-where people think nothing of significance exists outside of the Falls and the Casino. Being such a large old space-they generally turn lights on in the upper and lower levels only when you are going to those floors to conserve on energy. You will understand why. This store goes above and beyond in customer service. I learned about it on Facebook and called over a really old series. He had them in the format I wanted and did a fantastic job mailing them. He clearly crafted the box to fit my purchase and ensured they would travel with no mishap. It only took 3 days for them to get halfway across the country via USPS. This is a hidden gem in Niagara Falls, NY! It is probably the biggest used bookstore I've ever been in. It includes a main floor, a basement, and a top floor. They've even had plays in the upstairs. This is a family business, the owners Jeff and Teresa are great. It's been a family business for I believe over 80 years!. My husband had bought thousands of books from this place. I particularly love the basement which is where there are lots of used books including children's, psychology, religion, self-help, cookbooks, and the list goes on... All sorts of neat photos and additions in the walls...that make it so personal, unique, interesting, and fun. If you can't find the book in store, Jeff the owner will order it for you. He's a really nice guy and I think you should go check this place out! I don't go to Niagara Falls often, but it's worth the trip. Not gonna lie I was a little confused coming into the place cause it was all dark and unwelcoming which is the only reason I took a star off BUT the moment you get past that and the owner welcomes you in it is a WHOLE different world. Please don't ever judge a book by it covers kids because that place is a gem wanting to be found. He has new books, old books, gently used books, kid books, small reads, large reads, etc. You searching for something he might just have it. We didn't get to stay long just a quick 15 minutes in and out but I extremely enjoyed what little time I had there. Cornered! I cant say enough about the Book Corner. They have so many books', and many of them are in the building of which I went. There's a whole room for romanses, although I didn't see "Confessions of a Werewolf Supermodel." Maybe someone bought it? There are lots of books' in the basement to, but it smells a little like cat pee in the summer. And the spring. And the fall. And the autumn. And the winter. Its the best thing on Main Street! Which isnt saying much, but even if there were other things, it would still be great. I needed help once, and I dont think I'll ask for help again. The review of The Book Corner above by Aich K is pretty accurate, but don't be put off by the owner. He's a bit bohemian, perhaps somewhat intense, and maybe even quirky, but definitely helpful. Many of the great bookstores are staffed by such people. The gentleman is quite respectable, though maybe not the epitome of refinement. I understand he is a well-known part of the community. When I visited the store, he greeted me and asked me if he could help me, and he did. He is rather knowledgeable and helpful, which is important in a bookseller. I visited the store today looking for a very esoteric title that I need immediately, and decided to head to this Niagara Falls shop because in doing an online search, I was unable to locate any store within two hours driving distance that carried the book. If anyone would have this particular book nearby, it would be this store. Although no luck for that title, I DID see several other books that I was interested in that I bought. Normally, I extremely finicky and do not purchase used books, but the used books at Book Corner are in excellent to near fine condition generally speaking. And the prices were extremely fair, maybe even a little low. The books are well-organized and clean. Compared to my stop before The Book Corner, I visited the book outlet store in the Wurlitzer building in North Tonawanda, but I had to leave it because I started sneezing from all the dust and it was hot, humid and stuffy. Selling new books primarily on the main floor, and pre-owned books in the well-lit basement level area, The Book Corner stocks a wide variety of local history books that you will be hard-pressed to find many other places, perhaps even online. The owner was not kidding when he said you could spend a day looking through titles in the rabbit's warren basement maze of books. Because the store does not have heavy traffic, I am guessing there is not heavy turnover of stock, so therefore the lucky ones of us who check the place out will find a nice treasure that the zombies under the spell of sterilized cookie-cutter mainstream commercialism and who only shop Barnes and Noble or Amazon will miss out on. I am so afraid to share this fact that I almost did not mention it: I want the selection all to myself! The store also has a very nice children's section at the back. Lots of military books, biographies, film books, science, philosophy, fiction, classics . . . if an avid reader can't find anything to his/her interest, there is something wrong with the person, not the store. You will not pay extra for ambiance because although it is no means run down, the location is rather old. However, what you WILL get is SELECTION. It's stock honestly rivals the Erie County Public Library in downtown Buffalo, as well as the Niagara Falls, NY main library located about a mile west of this shop. I would not be concerned about the somewhat blighted surrounding area. The City of Niagara Falls Police and court are located one building over from the store, and there is always a spot right in front of the shop so you don't have to walk too far. This is the main business district, and there are other fine established businesses in the area (including DiCamillo's flagship bakery store on nearby Linwood Avenue near Main Street. A must stop for marvelous cakes, pastries, and, for my money, the best doughnuts there are.) Really, it's safe . . . and I am a big coward generally. PLEASE NOTE: The only reason why I give this location four stars is because I do not want readers to have this notion that The Book Corner has the grand ambiance of a store out of the Victorian age. Its functional in that respect, but clean (even if the owner does have a cat . . . I personally happen to like cats very much.) If you are a bonafide reader, and not a poseur who likes to be seen in a bookstore rather than find something truly amazing, you are better off keeping your loyalty to the major chains. But if you like real experience in your life, check out The Book Nook. read more

It's sadly getting harder to find great bookstores, especially those with a decent selection of used books. The Book Corner has been an institution in Niagara Falls for decades. They have a huge selection of used books on the top (fiction) and basement (non-fiction), and the ground floor houses all the new books. The books are extremely affordable, with my husband and I coming away with two bags of books (roughly 14 or so) for about $60, including several new books as well. Used books seem to run roughly $1-5, and new prices are obviously priced by the publisher and vary widely. This is a solid place to find a gift for the hard-to-shop-for person since they have so much to offer. Truly books for every interest and budget, including math, religion, nature, children, and even coloring books. This place offers a nice selection of local history books as well. If you want to check out the top or bottom floors, simply ask the owner and he will gladly turn on the lights and give you a quick tour, then let you wander the huge rooms. Really great place to check out--they have interesting artwork, lots of seating and even host music events as well. Parking is free and plentiful right out front. They do accept debit/credit cards, and even offer gift wrapping. The owner is a really nice guy and cares deeply about the community, and the history of book selling. read more

The used book lover's dream: Three stories packed with books (one floor new, one devoted to used fiction, and one to used nonfiction), in a large 90-year-old warehouse building, organized by category and (mostly) alphabetically as well. A proprietor who is friendly and very knowledgeable about what he has. Very reasonable prices for the used books. I found two used books I've been on the lookout for, cheaper than I've seen elsewhere. Not modern or shiny like Powell's in Portland, OR, but deserves to have the same kind of devoted clientele. The Book Corner has been an institution, the foundation of bookselling in Niagara Falls for over 50 years. The original location was just a few doors away from the current one, to which they moved in (I think) the early 80s. This is a family business, and Jeff, the manager, grew up selling books with his Dad. My favorite gifts were always from the Book Corner. It is old, it smells, and it contains more treasures than you could ever imagine. Jeff will track down a rare, out of print book for you. There were also instruments that my friend and I were free to play. The owners were lovely and very hands on. I had never been to The Book Corner before despite having lived in the area for some time. I had some used books, and I was hoping to get some cash for them, but honestly I just wanted to get rid of them. I had heard of the place around town, so I went there, and talked to a guy who I later found out was the owner. I have never been treated so downright terrible by a store owner in my life. His store buys and sells used books, yes. However, he started going on about how many used books he has, and how I was a pathetic loser for thinking that he would buy mine. I actually was laughing through the first few seconds of his rampage because I thought he must have been joking. But when he just kept going and actually told me to get out of his store unless I wanted to give him the books for free, I realized that he wasn't joking at all. Ironic thing, I would have given him the books for free if he had just said he can't really be buying used books at the time. read more
