The bookstore at Northern is such an atrocious rip-off, so head down the road and spend your money at Campus Books and Supplies. Sure, they will still rob you blind (I kid, I kid--college students need a lesson in monetary value by forking out $150 for a text book they will never need again in six months), but you won't feel so disgruntled about it. Prices for books, supplies, and university gear are about 10 to 20% cheaper than the campus bookstore. Disheartened by lost orders and other customer service issues at the campus's Follett store, many professors only place their book orders at Campus Book. So, instead of making two bookstore trips, start here first. Beware of the endless lines during the first week of class. Get your schedule early and go to the store about a week before the start of school to bypass the wait. Also, sell your books back to Campus Book and Supply for more cash than you'd get on campus. I've always made out better here than on campus, but I'll always shed a tear for that barely cracked $100 textbook that only fetches me $20.
