I had the best experience at The Bottle Shop in Sierra Madre. There were two store clerks, both of them were friendly and knowledgeable. Even though they were busy with a line of customers, one of them came around the counter and helped me find what I was looking for. I think his name was Scott. He was funny and charming and found what I couldn't find immediately for me. The shop itself is well stocked with all the high end and even more moderate liquors and even a great selection of mixers. This small village has an out in the boondocks kind of vibe were it is separated from the rest of busy world. I stopped by to buy our office group lottery tickets hoping for a big win so we can all retire. Came in with my friend after having dinner a couple of stores down at Corfu(check my review) looking for a bottle of wine! Let's just say this place has it all! What I loved most about the place is that there was an amazing little wine bar tucked in the back left corner of the store and a large wine room to the right. The wine bar was packed, dim, and lively. Great ambience! I went in the wine room that was adjacent to the wine bar and found two of my favorite everyday bottles of wine and that is Justin and the Prisoner. But what happened on nov 29 is embarrassing...I live in the neighborhood and also goes there every other day for icecream , but on 29th November at 5:30 pm when I tried to buy a soda I was being told I can't use my card since the amount Spent has to be over 5, so I picked an extra lottery, again I was being told for lotteries I can't pay with card. My brother had an open bar at his wedding and came to The Bottle Shop for their alcohol, so we did the same when we got married. My husband and I came here to get an idea of how much it would cost us to feed our alcoholic relatives. Our salesperson was very friendly and helpful. He asked us what kinds of drinks we plan to serve, and we told him mixed drinks, wines, and beers. We told them we didn't need top shelf stuff, as we'd go broke with all the drinkers who will be attending the wedding. I don't remember off the top of my head what he quoted us, but it was cheaper than what we had anticipated paying, so their prices are definitely reasonable. They have a great policy of being able to return whatever alcohol that wasn't used as long as they're not opened. We really like that, because we didn't want to be stuck with a bunch of unused alcohol after the wedding. Anyway, on the morning of the wedding, they delivered all the alcohol and came to pick up the unused stuff that night. Then they send us an itemized bill for the total cost and we send them a check or charge it on our credit card and it's all done! Just like that! It's so hassle free and convenient. I would definitely recommend The Bottle Shop to anyone who is throwing a big party with alcohol and wants to be able to return all unopened bottles. read more

Five star review for Keith. I was impressed by how jovial he was. He was super cool and helpful even though I was there super close to closing (sorry). It's pricey but I you'll always find something interesting there. This time around I got a matcha yuzu hard apple cider by Stoked Cider Co. Let me tell ya. I was stoked to try this. But... it was disappointing. for $12.80ish or a 4pack, its pretty pricey to be disappointed. Wish they'd let us mix and match or sell singles. The yuzu flavor isn't very prominent and the matcha just makes it a bit weird and slightly bitter. I'll most likely be back to check out their wine selection or wine tasting. read more

When my wife and I first got married, our first apartment was in Sierra Madre on Esperanza. Rent was a little steep for a couple of teachers, and the apartment in which we lived had the occasional Jumbo rat... But, one of the perks was being walking distance to Sierra Madre's restaurants, bars, and of course, the Bottle Shop. Many a night saw us walking across the rear parking lot to pick up some kind of refreshments. The bottle shop was always well stocked, and generally staffed by some nice people. I'm not entirely sure what others are so excited about with regard to the personalities and customer service skills of existing staff. I like having long conversations too, but generally not with the employees of a small town liquor store. Nothing on them, I'm sure they're nice guys... It's just that, much like Vegas, I'm not here for a haircut. Anyway, my only complaint, if you want to call it that, is that the bottle shop closes down around 11 PM. After listening to some band playing at the Buccaneer, and then hearing the dreaded "last call," there will not be any additional purchases for late night festivities as far as the Bottle Shop is concerned. As I've gotten older and more responsible, I suppose that's not a dealbreaker. Besides, I don't live there anymore... And if I did, it was close enough that I could make those purchases and take them back to my fridge before heading out for the evening. If given the chance, I would rather visit this place then Happy's down the street. Neither is on my regular rotation anymore. But I suppose, when in Rome, do as the Sierra Madrans do. If you just want booze, there are a lot of liquor stores in Los Angeles. If there is a particular type of spirit (bourbon for me!) that you have a particular passion about, there are very, very few really good liquor stores in Los Angeles that have great selections and an atmosphere where you feel like you can ask questions and get quality, educated responses. I went to the Bottle Shop just less than a year ago to get a few Kegs of beer for a small corporate gathering, and was amazed at the quality of great beers they had available to be tapped, and made a mental note to go back in the future and look around the place. A buddy of mine and I did just that yesterday. We spent some time in the place; I needed to replace the bottle of Elmer Lee that had taken me a couple of months to drain, and he needed to get a good bottle of scotch for an associate. Their selection of great spirits is comprehensive, nay, VAST! I counted at least 20 great bourbons available, and when asked, they mentioned more that they get limited quantities of from time to time (like Sazerac 17, Old Pogue, etc.). My partner was happy with the Scotch selection -- I pretty much gave it up after trying to "get into" the earthier Islay Scotches, which to me taste like a combination of Root Beer, NyQuil and Jaegermeister. They have complete selections of everything from Irish Whiskies to Rums and Vodkas. Their wine selection looks fabulous, including some very nice champagnes, and as stated before, their beers are really top notch. Combine all this with an enthusiastic, family-run operation in the sleepy community of Sierra Madre, and you have a top-shelf store. The owners take great pride in knowing as much as possible about their selections, and make great recommendations with respect to a customer's particular tastes. If you like bourbon, you'll find Pappy Van Winkle's, Jefferson Reserve, Eagle Rare and many other small-batch, hard-to-find and aged (up to 18 years) bourbons, on top of the usual premium stuff like Rare Breed, Beam Black, Booker's, Woodford Reserve, etc. I settled on the Jefferson Reserve at about $50 bucks. Look forward to a return trip in a couple of months. Highly recommended, although they didn't have my Elmer Lee's, which is a really nice "go-to", but with the selection they had, I didn't miss it more than, say, 30 seconds. When I was growing up in Sierra Madre in the 70s there were at least three big liquor stores and two grocery stores that sold booze (and some even delivered. This is for a town of a few thousand (say there was one liquor store for every 750 people - so Sierra Madre is definitely a place where people like and know their alcohol. Now the booze and delivery have lessened from quantity into quality - and there is no better place to illustrate this transformation than the liquor-store and wine-tasting bar, The Bottle Shop. It is a long time family owned business and it retains that personal touch. Aside from its half decent 75 cent large coffee offering, and its obligatory corner of 7/11 style convenience store offerings, the Bottle Shop is for the most part a very classy little place. Not only does it have a vast selection of fine Scotches, Whiskies, Vodkas, Gins, Tequilas, and Liquors; but is also has a fine array of imported beers and local craft beers, and an amazing collection of wines. Sure you can get a two liter bottle of Woodbridge Merlot for 11 bucks; but you can also go into the private room where the father will walk you through a cellar of wines to rival the best restaurants in LA. I even saw a bottle of George LaTour Cabernet 99 for $299 (which I had in my collection and had opened at a small dinner not realizing how expensive it would be to replace). About half the nights of the week the Bottle Shop has "wine tastings" for five bucks. It is fun and you can buy a few, and it is the closest thing to a wine bar anywhere near Sierra Madre. Another fun thing is that the owners two college aged sons work there, and they are identical twins, which is amusing most of the time but also disconcerting when you are doing a booze run in the middle of a party night and you can't figure out who is who. And the two boys will bust your balls about it and goof with you like old pals. It is kind of cute, and certainly unique in the world of liquor stores in my experience. So, if you live in or pass through Sierra Madre anytime soon - and you want a good bottle of wine and someone who really knows how to help you pick it - try the Bottle Shop. I really like this place, the guys are nice and there's a good amount to see. Occasionally you'll find a fairly priced hard to find bottle but for the most part if it's allocated the prices are very high (bourbon). They get some store picks and the staff are good about telling you what they really think of what showed up. It's always clean, well kept and has a nice local vibe to it. For whatever reason during the pandemic I've noticed a lot of customers seem to have a hard time keeping their masks on in there, but there's idiots everywhere. When you think of alcohol by the ounce, you probably automatically think of a 40oz malt liquor. And yet you can gladly do a pinky up sort of snobby gesture while you get your ounce lovin' from this spot. Their tasting room, which is adjacent to the bottle shop, offers you the ability to pour yourself a ounce or two for a couple of bucks. Which in reality is a great idea. Not only can you make some wicked meritage blends of your own, you can use it for the purpose it was intended - to try out a wine before buying one... or a case at the place. The service here is pretty neat and you should probably watch yourself as drinking so many little ounce servings of wine will catch up with you in the long run. As for the bottle shop in itself, they do have a pretty good selection of whatever you're looking for in the world of alcoholic goodness. The prices are also really shockingly low. A Liquor Store has bullet proof glass between the customer and the cashier. The Bottle Shop deals in fine spirits without any pretension. You a re one with the bottle and can browse like in regular shop. Bill Sullivan has it ALL....and if he doesn't he can get it! We had our wedding reception at nearby Villa Sol D'Oro. They let us bring in our own liquor and the Bottle Shop was recommended. Best thing we could've done. We saved money time and no hassles. Bill was more than reasonable and very knowledgeable and treats people the way people should treated.....Good!. They delivered everything to our reception. I have lived in Sierra Madre for 21 years and like this place a lot. I have always been treated nicely and never have had any problems. I read the reviews about the rude "Ponytail Man" and I have never seen this guy. I'm not a daily or even a weekly customer so maybe that's why I have escaped an encounter with him.
