What an interest shop this was. I'm an imbiber but not as much as I once was (time slows us all). But I have never seen a shop strictly devoted to non-alcoholic products. There is no booze to be found here anywhere. There is NA beer, NA wine, NA spirits, and lots of NA canned cocktails. We bought a few different items to try at home. The organization and layout of the products is easy and attractive. In fairness, while some NA products are great, others are just kind of average to not good, so it is kind of hit and mess. I suppose that holds true for almost everything. It is nice to have a store just for the non-drinker or the "sober-curious." Cute shop with a LOT of non-alcoholic choices. Good place for people who want to try cocktail flavors without the alcohol. When I went, there was a little event with some samples, which tasted pretty good. From talking to one vendor, apparently a lot of these products get the "zing of alcohol" from vinegar, and I could taste traces of it in most things I tried. I like vinegar, so that's not a problem for me - but not sure how it would be if you were drinking a large amount. The lady I spoke to was nice enough, but it felt like some staff were more focused on people that they felt were going to buy something. Fair enough, but if you don't really talk to someone, you might not know they're interested in buying something, especially if your product is new to that person. Every year I attend Tales of the Cocktail, and I've noticed a shift to non and low ABV spirits. And, while I still prefer 80 proof or above, I do have friends that are trying to cut back or don't drink, so I like to have enjoyable alternatives for them when they come to visit. However, that's not always easy to find, so I was excited when I heard about Burden of Proof. Founded by Obreanna McReynolds & Dean Peterson (wife & hubby), Burden of Proof is the first non-alcoholic bottle shop in SGV. I was amazed by the wide selection available. I spoke to Dean (who is very nice & knowledgeable) and he mentioned that they carry 250 non-alcoholic beverages. I had no idea there were so many options. Everything was well organized, which makes it easy to locate what spirit you are looking for. They also have snacks, cocktail syrups, bar ware, & gift items. I picked up some RTD (Ready to drink) cocktails for a friend and a Paloma for myself. It tasted good, and I used the rest in place of grapefruit soda in a cocktail. The RTDs are low calorie, which is also a plus. The shop hosts free tastings every Friday & Saturday and offers fun classes like candle making workshops. I came across Burden of Proof (BOP?!) on my way to dinner and immediately loved the cozy set up and curation of non alcoholic drinks and snacks. We stoped by today because I saw a LAist article about Burden of Proof. We had a long talk with the one of the owners Dean about the various options and had tastes of many of them. My sons were so inspired that they came home and developed several NA cocktails with what we purchased. All of it was good, but my favorite was the Dromme mixed with some Fever Tree Ginger Beer with a fancy ice cube we had leftover from the holidays and everyone really liked the yuzu ginger non-alcoholic beer. read more

As an owner of a sober cocktail lounge (Free Spirited), I know the need of places like Burden of Proof. The selection is wonderful and they have stuff from tea alternatives to 0.5 ABV. They also have RTDs (ready to drink), wine, spirit alternatives, and even pre packadged food. The Pinot Gris they have is great if you can do non alcoholic (0.5% ABV or less) and the French Bloom alcohol free Champagne 0.0% is lightly sweet, off dry, hibiscus notes and an all around winner! They have fun events like tastings too. My personal favorite thing is they have snacks, and the snacks are varied and can feed different dietary restrictions (I have to be gluten free so this is huge for me).
