This is a review in two parts. First, lunch…read more Maxdons claims to have the best steaks in town. Pretty bold statement. However, the place has been around for a long time and the rumor is that it is pretty darn good so I figured I would try the lunch menu. I will be returning this weekend to try the dinner menu and report in on any differences that I may find because this lunch experience was somewhat unique and definitely worth writing about. Upon entering, I was washed over with a wave of nostalgia. It reminded me of all of those semi-fancy places I got to experience with my parents in the 1970s from the lighting to the ambience to the music to the general overall feel, which is very welcoming. And if you are as old as I am, will definitely take you back. And that is a great way to get an appetite started. However, that's when things got a little strange... On a Saturday afternoon, they had exactly one young lady tending bar, working the grill, and acting as a server for not only the interior but for the outside patio area. I'm not sure whether or not this is a gimmick or just a very inefficient way to save money, but let me tell you that that young lady worked herself crazy to take care of everybody and under the circumstances did a fine job of it. Unfortunately, the grill is out in the main dining area and an open fire grill unattended can create somewhat of a safety issue. In addition, an old gentleman well into his cups decided to go over and place his face 6 inches above the food that was currently being cooked, which I thought was a little unsettling. Based on all of this, I decided to order a cheeseburger in that I did not want to risk $50-$60 on a steak that was not going to be attended to consistently. That, dear reader, will come to pass this weekend when I go in for dinner this weekend. Now that we have a basic understanding of the layout, I want to mention a few awesome things: The cocktails were very well made. Generous pours, but they didn't overdo it and the result was delicious. I, myself, enjoyed a Mai Tai. The salad bar was modestly stocked, but did not have a bunch of unnecessary, ridiculous items that people seem to think makes a salad taste better. They also had a soup of the day. But, at 95° outside was not on my list of things to eat. Again, that will be Saturday. The cheeseburger was surprisingly delicious due to the fact that I don't think it was looked at more than twice and flipped more than once, but it was pretty darn good with a great char, and medium as ordered. Upon requesting the check, it was noticed that the dinner salad listed on the menu at $7.99 was charged at $25. After three different conversations, the overworked server / cook / bartender realized the error and immediately made things right. All in all this place is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The research I did shows that the locals just love it. You can go on a classy date or something casual with some friends, and you will still have that sophisticated, refined throwback to an earlier time when going out to dinner was truly an event. The only concern I have is for a staff member having to deal with several people and wear several hats with no backup whatsoever. The inability to stay on top of a grill that is consistently going in the main dining area is a safety concern, but not the fault of the server herself. This is a management decision and I would definitely recommend that a second person is always on whether it is lunch or dinner. She did mention that in the dinner time cycle, there is another person who comes in to assist and that is the reason I'm going back Saturday. I want to see how the dinner turn and burn works because the burger was really good and I imagine that the steaks are gonna be just as good as everybody says they are. It is definitely worth a visit. Until then....

We didn't try the food, I didn't get any beer, but we were there for a local band night with our not-so-local band. Parking is drastically lacking, but we found some form of parking near a wall on what seems to be a storage place. And they seem to be one of the few places that allows smoking indoors at a designated smoking table. You know, not that smoke stays there, but okay. Whatever. I can survive to an extent in a secondhand smoke cloud I'd rather not be in, but if management wants that, great. I would like to return to try their food menu, however. It was still a pretty nice venue for a local bar in the middle of nowhere in Lancaster. I don't think I can get over the smoke, though. It wasn't a big issue, however. Well ventilated to a point. But, well, there's driving to Lancaster. If you're not already there for some reason, probably best not to make the trip.

07.19.2014 Tonight…read moreis the last night I will ever patron the Longhorn Inn until they change their ways. I encourage all people of color to refrain from spending their hard-earned monies at an establishment that shows total disregard for the physical and mental well-being of its employees and their patrons of color. Tonight, I went there to celebrate the birthday of a friend and what should have been a joyous time quickly turned sour when another patron made a very racist comment in front of me. Apparently, he blames members of the Black community for being kicked out of a certain high school. (I'm sure his bad attitude concerning Black people in general is why he got kicked out.) His statement included using the "N-word". A few people have mistakenly thought that I am a Pacific Islander and will make racist statements not realizing I'm really an undercover Black girl. Because I'm half-Black , I was extremely offended. Because the Antelope Valley has a problem with racist gangs, I felt it was better not to cause a scene and possibly make myself a target of violence by confronting this person. I told a friend (who also works here) about this experience right after it happened. Not only was she not surprised she knew exactly who this was because this person was a repeat offender several times over. This person has loudly claimed their "white power" status in front of them and made statements using the "N-word" in their presence. Even the door person knew who this was acknowledging this person's previous grievances regarding his race-hatred statements. She stated that it makes her very uncomfortable, as a Black person, that they allow this repeat offender to come back and patron this bar. And since her employment options aren't bountiful she can't just walk away from her job. After relaying my experience with the door person, he had a "talk" with the offender and allowed him to stay in the bar knowing the history this person has making offensive statements to people of color. I felt this was not enough and spoke with the owner who also admonished this person's behavior, but still the owner allowed him to stay. Without action that clearly shows that there are direct consequences for bad behavior the offender is free to repeat it because there are only empty threats of being asked to leave. This needs to change as it creates a hostile environment for the both the employee and patrons of color. This is not acceptable and I decided that I would leave because I do not want to spend my hard earned money somewhere that would allow their employees to be treated in such a way I made sure to let the owner know that I was leaving and why and they seemed to lack understanding of the nature of my decision. And I explained to them why and they said that they had told him that if his behavior continued she would kick him out. They asked me what I wanted her to do. It should be obvious; he should be permanently banned from this establishment. He is a repeat offender and cannot be held to an "honor system." What he said to me will roll off me like rain on a duck's feathers, but my friend should not have to work in this kind of environment. Maybe I'm not a big spender, and my contribution to this bar will not be missed. That's ok. Maybe not a lot of people will boycott this bar because of what I'm writing. But if you go there and someone racially offends you understand that while this bar may "talk" to this person to placate you the offender is free to come back and harass you or any other person based on their race, gender or orientation again and again. I choose to say no. No, I will not patron an establishment that allows their employees to work under hostile conditions. No, I will not spend my money somewhere where repeat offenders are slapped on the wrist. I choose to stand up for what is right.

As you drive up it is a stand along building with plenty of parking on the far back left side of the parking lot plaza. The interior is very unique, dark back ground with blue lighting with many wall art pieces and TV's you can view within any seating options. They have bar top seating, table and charges and booths. Plenty of seating for small and large parties. As you can see from the menu pictures below they have many food options depending on what you in the mood for. We stopped in during lunch to test out their wings, we heard they were very good, they did not disappoint. The lunch special is a great way to sample their food, we each had our own wing lunch special, I had the 10 piece, you can get two choices of sauce with the 10pc only, my brother had the 8 piece, each order comes with a drink and your choice of fries or onion rings, great price for the wings. The wings had great flavor and were fair sized, I was very impressed with the "hot" buffalo sauce, very tasty with a small kick, I would recommend a try, I also ordered the spicy teriyaki,it was ok but my brother ordered the spicy lemon pepper that is also a hit and a must try. The french frys were criss cut and good sized portion as well. The staff was friendly, we had a great interaction with the bartender (Ash) who brought over our drinks. Overall, a very good experience, we are also looking for a spot to watch the World Cup games and Ash mention that they were going to support the games, we will be back next week to take in the games and more of the menu.

Originally we just came in for drinks, but somehow ended up ordering baked potato soup too... and I'm so glad we did. I ordered both the watermelon cocktail and the tamarindo cocktail. The watermelon one unfortunately didn't really land for me since it tasted more sour than fruity, which was disappointing. But the tamarindo cocktail? Absolutely delicious. I'd order that one again without hesitation. My husband ordered the peach margarita and loved it as well. Now the baked potato soup was honestly the star of the visit. It came served with tortilla chips and was way better than I expected. I assumed the bacon would just be tiny sprinkled bits, but nope! They gave actual CHUNKS of bacon, which made the soup even better. It was my husband's first time trying baked potato soup and he was completely sold. As for the restaurant itself, it was okay. We came earlier in the day so it wasn't too crowded, which was nice. The atmosphere personally wasn't fully my style since the music was pretty loud and the lighting was a little darker than I prefer, but that's more of a personal preference than an actual complaint.
