I had a great time attending a dumpling class. The instructors were knowledgable and energetic. They did a lot of the hard prep work, but were careful to give attendees some hands-on time with key steps in the process. And, honestly, the resulting dumplings (chicken and pork... 3 different dipping sauces... both fried and boiled...) were really good. I ate, and ate, and finally could not eat any more. Had so much fun here. Knowing to cook is important to young and olds like me. Full disclosure: I was here for a free class due to being a tenant benefit. This place is clean and has plenty of work station for a class. I was in a class of 8 but they can fit much much more. The kitchen offers classes almost every night and I heard they get booked packed most of time. Check their website for more information on what classes available and great date idea. So far I learned to make cookie, pita bread and hummus. I ate plenty of them but never know how to make it. They are pretty time consuming. Overall a great experience and had ton of fun. read more

You can learn pickling from McClure himself, bread-making from SCRATCHbread's Matthew Tilden...basically, there's a whole host of things to take up from beer-brewing to salad-making to butchering to gardening. He's down-to-earth, funny and you can tell he loves to cook. I was also happy to discover that although the class was based around sauces, you can come ready with any questions you might have about any aspect of cooking. He's very knowledgeable, and explains things in an accessible way. I feel like the most important things I took away from the class were not actually about sauces, but about general cooking knowledge and technique. Plus, you get to eat at the end, and I like to eat. In addition to the Lab aspect, the store itself is stocked with all sorts of food and drink related items. Anything you might need to cook with (utensils, ingredients, knives, cookbooks), and some odds and ends I haven't seen in many other places. Like: 1. Egg pants. Self-explanatory. 2. Marmite, a disgusting brown substance that I am only aware of because I have friends in London. 3. Spicy beans! In case you didn't know, the dearth of spicy beans is one of the main reasons Bloody Marys in this city will never be great. 4. A huge metal scale that you stand on, and it weighs you. I guess that doesn't seem that special when I write it down. It's much cooler than it sounds, and you'll just have to take my word for it until you go check out the Brooklyn Kitchen Labs. read more

I popped in here with some foodie-minded friends and really dug the loot. They definitely have many upscale items, but most of them are very practical for someone who's serious in the kitchen. They have mason jars galore and lots of fancy chocolate. Their syrup and honey were fancy but surprisingly competitively priced. This review is specifically for the donuts class with Reva Castillenti. Here's my TLDR review, for the efficient, busy, and fast-acting amateur bakers out there: If you are a beginner baker looking for a fun afternoon with your boo or a cute family/friends outing, this class is excellent! If you are a bit more experienced and looking to really hone your dough making and donut frying skills, I don't think you will get what you are looking for out of this class. The facility provided all necessary materials and the instructor (Reva Castillenti) was experienced and informative, however, there was a decent bit of sharing the equipment with other class-mates, so hands-on time was minimal. I do wish the website was a bit more descriptive on exactly what to expect. That said, if you are looking for a class that is more fun than pen-and-paper required, this was a really fun class. The donuts and toppings were plentiful and tasty, and light refreshments were provided (beer, cheese, crackers, and jam). There is no bathroom in the kitchen itself, so you will have to run around the corner to the nearest facility in Industry City if you need. Here are some more deets, if you have a little more time and attention span: The Shtick: No shtick here, just a giant kitchen which offers cooking and baking classes. The Product: My boyfriend and I took the donut making class, which was well-thought-out, informative, and entertaining. Beer and light refreshments (cheese, crackers, jam) were provided, which was a really nice touch (and necessary obvi, since eating my weight in fried dough wouldn't hold me until dinner). Donut toppings (sprinkles, coarse sugar, chocolate sauce, lemon glaze) were also provided, and we were given free reign in decorating our creations. Though the event description mentioned that we would learn to make cake and yeast donuts, the yeast dough was already made and proofed and all we had to do was cut the donuts and fry them. There was also just one mixer at the front where the cake dough was mixed during the class, so the roughly 17 or so of us were crowded around watching and listening, rather than performing the steps ourselves. Once the dough was mixed, the class was then grouped into two tables, and we had to take turns at the fryer. I would have liked to have had more of a hands-on experience and 1:1 attention from our instructor to answer my questions. The Space: The facility is very cool, located inside the huge market at Industry City. I do wish the kitchen had more mixers and fryers so we could have been split into smaller groups for a more hands-on experience. There is no bathroom in the kitchen itself, so if you need to use the facilities you have to de-robe (apron) and run around the corner to the nearest bathroom in the market. The Staff: Our instructor, Reva Castillenti, was friendly, cordial, and informative. She was passionate about baking (particularly bread), but there wasn't a ton of interaction and engagement between Reva and the group. Price/Value: I haven't taken a ton of cooking or baking classes, so I am admittedly not the most well-informed at what they should cost. The instructor was friendly and knowledgable. However, given that the class was called knife skills, it didn't cover enough of the techniques and didn't offer enough time for practice. We worked with our knives for about 1-1.25 hrs and then the rest of the time was spent cooking and eating. The instructor reviewed a few different common knives and their common uses. The main focus of the class was on the techniques for the chef's knife. She reviewed how the knife should be held and a few different cuts. We practiced on onions, carrots, celery, garlic, and parsley. Each person cut about one of each vegetable. The class was not advertised as a cooking class, but we spent 1 hr out of the two hour class cooking a minestrone soup. The soup was good and I always enjoy cooking, but not enough time was spent reviewing the skills and practicing. There was very little instruction of how to hold and secure items with the non-dominant hand while cutting and many craved more personal guidance and correction. I saw a few people with lost looks on their faces. There were many people not cutting correctly and questions that were not answered. The class pace could be slowed down and the cooking portion eliminated. Instead, send the students home with the prepped vegetables and a recipe card. I would like to have received more instruction and more time to practice and ask questions. It felt rushed because we had to leave enough time to assemble and cook the soup. I was hoping to leave the class with a solid foundation on how I should be cutting with a chef's knife and the confidence to practice more at home. However, I left the class with a few more "tips" but not with the foundation that I was hoping for. read more

My husband and I were given a cooking class at Brooklyn Kitchen as a wedding gift and it was fantastic! The classes do fill up quickly, so I would recommend looking pretty far in advance to grab a spot to the class that peaks your interest. We opted for a Thursday night class called Frosty Winter Night (ironically on the eve of this so-called huge blizzard we are getting!). Class was $75/each and included unlimited red and white wine and sparkling water. Our instructor was Syd and she was great---provided really good and helpful instruction on techniques and steps but also had a great sense of humor and kept things fun. She seemed to really care about people learning things and having new skills to take home with them. The group ranged from people with tons of experience (one could have taught the class probably) to people that I don't think have ever picked up a spatula before---and all left with something new. Everyone at our cooking station was great---lots of fun and laughter as you sort of end up working as a team. There were two tables and we each worked simultaneously on the same cooking tasks. We prepared a risotto Milanese, ossobuco, and a winter salad. All were exceptional and delicious! They also give you a recipe sheet with instructions to recreate on our own. Really this is a great gift for any occasion---there was a group there for a birthday party, as well as a couple celebrating an anniversary. Also great for a date night or just because! Couldn't recommend more highly! Our instructor mentioned they are planning to add some new classes to their calendar, as well as trying to offer more classes on weekends so keep an eye out for this! I took a pizza class here and while I really enjoyed the instructors we had there were a few drawbacks. First, it was advertised as a pizza, salad, and wings class. The day before the class the wings were cut. We weren't that disappointed because we were mostly looking forward to the pizza anyway, but it does seem like something you were paying for was dropped last minute and not replaced. The day of the class there wasn't enough oven space to cook all of the pizzas so they had to be rotated and the ovens kept shutting off. Some of the pizzas ended up either not getting entirely cooked or burnt and pretty much inedible, which was the case with ours. Sure there was a bunch of pizza left that others had made but when you go to a cooking class excited to make your own creation and then it is burnt to a crisp and you aren't able to eat it, it is pretty disappointing. There was also a couple next to us who's pizza got cooked after everyone else so while everyone was eating their pizza (except us since ours was burnt) they were waiting. The class was pretty much ending and their pizza was still cooking so they finally pulled it out with the bottom not really being fully cooked just so they could have it. Overall, I liked the people and the concept of this place but maybe pizza just wasn't the right class to take. I wouldn't have allowed as many students so everyones pizzas could have cooked and with 3 instructors I definitely would have made sure someones pizza didn't get burned. For $200 a couple though I think I would have rather gone to a nice dinner at least I wouldn't have had to stop to eat again after the class. I should note they said they wanted to give us some sort of a refund/credit after the class but it is a week later and still no follow up. If that does happen I'll update this review. read more

Wow!! No joke, this is the best damn ham I have ever had! (My boyfriend seconds that!) It is so flavorful and moist and buttery... It literally melts in you mouth! I just bought 1/3lb an hour ago and half of it is gone already! I also bought the roast beef which was awesome and some other meats which I have yet to try. I also taste tested a bunch of charcuterie and everything is absolutely delicious! They have a great fresh selection of both meat and seafood! I'm excited to try the lamb, salmon, little neck clams next time! I love that the butchers here are so knowledgable and so passionate about what they are selling and giving great cooking tips! I loved it here. I went for a cooking class with my team at work and it was really fun. I love the space, our two chefs were wonderful, made fun of all the mason jars (as being so Brooklyn). They were very accommodating for the one vegan and one vegetarian request and I learned some great kitchen skills. I am writing this review for a class I took at the Brooklyn Kitchen - specifically the pickling class by McClure's. The class itself was a reasonable size, I believe 16 attendees in total, and taught by Kendall Holmes (formerly of McClure's Pickles). We ended up learning how to pickle two items over the two hours of the course - cocktail onions and cauliflower. Kendall suggested pickling things that you can get in season, so these were more in the winter veggie family than say, actual cucumbers would be. Overall I felt like the class was well organized, well orchestrated, and definitely made so that everyone could understand and leave feeling motivated to pickle. I know I certainly did. I actually came home and promptly ordered pickling jars on Amazon and I am awaiting their delivery as I type this review. So...I guess that means success, right? Kendall was knowledgeable with his wide breadth of pickling history (and home fermenting of other sorts) and answered all of the attendees questions with ease and enthusiasm. Everyone was able to make a jar of both the onions and the cauliflower (with slightly different brining processes) to take home along with recipes for both. In looking at the calendar of classes that Brooklyn Kitchen offers, which is posted in their big kitchen space (nicely appointed with historic kitchen items and is extremely spacious) there were so many I wanted to try I didn't even bother writing them down! What a great idea - to learn how to do the things you love - or to hone the skills you need in the kitchen. All in all, a great place, a great space, and a great class. read more

My friend had a cooking party here and I think everyone enjoyed it. The space has a warm feeling to it and is modern, spacious and clean. The cooking party was BYO and they had staff ready to uncork the bottles. They also had 2 homemade sodas (cream and hibiscus) which was a nice idea but I thought the flavors were too subtle. The staff was helpful and friendly and the idea is that cook as much or as little as you like so that you can still socialize with your friends. If anything, the staff picks up the slack and helps out, so it doesn't feel like a job. We had homemade pasta, of which the dough was already made so all we had to do was roll it out. There were additional stations, one for the salad and one for dessert and you could pick up and help wherever and however you liked. It was fun to do this with friends and have some laughs. The salad was made with roasted shallots and escarole. My favorite part was the apple crumble with oats and a delicious (premade) ginger ice cream. I really enjoyed the flexibility of this type of event since you can contribute in some way, but still enjoy your company. read more

Last week, Liza M asked me if I wanted to take a sourdough bread-making class at Brooklyn Kitchen. I jumped at the chance, because my sole experience with baking bread was when, twelve years ago, I had a brief stint as a Sandwich Artist at a Subway in Seattle's U-district. To make bread at Subway, you take the frozen baguette out of the box, let it defrost, put it in the proofer, and then finally move it to the oven. I was a REALLY good bread baker. As it turns out, making sourdough bread from a live starter is SLIGHTLY different from making bread at Subway; in fact, it takes 2 days! The class was taught by Nathan Leamy, who is clever enough to have gotten a fellowship to travel the world and study bread! He had lots of great stories and information, and he clearly loves bread and bread-making more than anyone I've ever met. He taught us all about different kinds of flour, how yeast works, how to prep a pizza stone so it doesn't shatter, and most importantly, how to care for the starter they gave us to take home. A starter is like a small amount of runny dough with live yeast in it, and according to the instruction sheet we were given, you must treat your starter "like a baby. That you eat." WELL! This is actually true. To keep the yeast alive, you have to feed it flour and water several times a day, keep it warm, and give it lots of love. Already, I am the worst mother on earth. First, I **almost** took my starter in the sauna with me at the gym last night. Then I left it in my bag until this morning, and I guess it was sad (Nathan confirmed that starters and dough can, in fact, feel emotion) that I neglected it all night, and it popped the top of its container and exploded all over my many very important belongings. There was a small amount left in the jar, and so I've been carefully feeding it today, and hopefully it will bounce back. Moral of the story: when people say something is like a baby and you should treat it as such, do not think that this is just them being hippies. Starters need love and attention, just like real babies. read more

I'd recently attended one of their cooking classes in celebration of a friend's birthday, and I have to say I'm deeply disappointed in how the cooking class turned out. It was not the fault of the instructor, but almost the fault of the way the class was set up. For $75 per person, I was definitely expecting the class to be hands on and that I would at least learn how to make a dish or two by the end of the 2.5 hour course. However, the class was more of a group effort where the instructor divided us into different groups to make the different parts of the meal. I was with the group in charge of making the marinade and I honestly can't even remember what we threw in the blender for the marinade because everyone threw in a thing or two. I understand there may be constraints to the number of stoves / equipment, but at least let each one of us prepare our own dishes. Because everything was group effort, there were a lot of wait time since everything got prepared so quickly. Also, the main dish didn't even turn out that well. Definitely one of the worst dollars I've spent in 2012. read more

Not sure what is driving the raving reviews for a place that charges nearly 100% over the retail suggested prices on nearly ever item. I checked the prices on various items that we already own such as Lodge cast iron skillets, and a Kapoosh knife holder and the sticker price was more nearly twice what I paid for the exact same items at other retailers. I understand a small business may not be able to compete directly on price alone with such large entities such as Amazon, etc, but the prices here are beyond exorbitant. Whoever manages this establishment is beyond greedy and cannot possess the values which embody a mindful outlook on food. Avoid and take your extra dollars elsewhere. read more

Because bread is the final frontier for me when it comes to baking (and possibly some form of puff pastry), I decided that I needed some expert direction. Expert direction came from the hands of Nathan Leamy, an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and, dare I say, entertaining baker who shared with the class tips, tricks and the 1-2-3's of sourdough bread-making. Sourdough bread is a little different than regular bread because, well, the dough is sour. And that comes from the starter you use, which allows the bread to become tart and lovely. I got my starter, I got my tips and I learned more than enough about flour to get my mad scientist bakers brain to cackle at me. Yes, my brain cackles. Definitely check out their bread-making class and other classes as well -definitely worth the dough (pun intended). I'm coming back! read more

As of now, there is noone to be held accountable for the quality of these classes. The establishment will not return emails regarding them, and of course the visiting chef is gone once it's over. I purchased 2 spots in the doughnut making class for a friend's birthday-- we both love doughnuts. And really, what's not to love? Onto Brooklyn Kitchen. Their market is adorable and they have tons of interesting kitchen knickknacks although a bit expensive. Would definitely buy some things here but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them here. You can get a Silpat lots of places. Now for the class. This is where all the most stars are lost. The instructor was very nice and casual-- introduced herself as someone who had been in the business for years but it became clear pretty quickly that she had almost zero experience teaching. She basically explained what was going to happen, demonstrating how to make the dough for us, and then sort of just said "okay now you go." None of us knew what we were doing. Her instructions differed vastly from the written instructions we were given at the beginning of class, so when we asked why it said mix these ingredients first, she was a little dismissive and just said "oh its fine to do x y z". We are beginners-- please be consistent and clear in your instructions. Also, there should have been helpers, going around to explain things to people as they are doing them. Just watching once quickly doesn't really do much. There were 2 workstations, and at least 12 people in the class, and each station made one type of doughnut. Ummm what? Basically six people got to share the duties of making a batch of doughnuts. There should be more work stations (they have the room for it) and people mostly came in pairs-- my friend and I should have our own doughnut batch to make (not getting to do one preparation thing because we have to share with 4 other people). For the amount of money I paid, I expected a lot more. Also, might have been our group, but hardly anyone talked at all. Mimosas didn't help to loosen anyone up and even the instructor's jokes fell flat. Will go other places for cooking classes next time. read more

I drool and swoon, rummage through my purse in the hopes of finding more money to throw away on specialty cooking and baking items. Shed a tear when I come to the realization that I do NOT in fact NEED a baking spatula the size of my pinky finger. I thank God that I live on the opposite end of the universe from this store because I would spend my entire pay check here. Need gourmet salt? They got it. Need a KitchenAid stand mixer in sea foam green? Check. Need kitchen knives and garlic roasters and wine keys shaped like a mustache? No question. The cool cats who work here are friendly and engaging, (and adorable! Totally got some digits). They've got mustaches and beards and funky glasses but are unpretentious. Not only do they stock the coolest of cool kitchen gadgets, but they have classes on everything from wine and cheese to butchering a pig. You can even learn how to pickle from McClure himself! Ive got the calendar for the next two months and I definitely see myself returning for a class or two, and maybe to buy that frothing whisk I've got my eye on. I took a knife skills class with a group of co-workers here last week and had a great time. (Thanks for organizing it, Jamie!) The class was supposed to be an hour and a half, but it ended up lasting 2 because our teacher kept showing us different methods and tricks to speed up your cooking. We had a group of 9 and each paid $34 - a great deal for all the things we learned (how to sharpen your knife, slicing, chopping, cutting an onion and garlic into even pieces, cutting a whole chicken into pieces, julienning, and a bunch of other skills). Our teacher is a sous chef at a popular restaurant in Manhattan and also shared some tricks that the restaurant industry uses to save money and time. He answered all of our questions thoroughly and gave us individual attention when we were having trouble with our knives. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone looking to improve their cooking skills or just for a fun group activity. As for the store itself, we got a 10% discount because we went to a class that night. They had tons of cute stuff and gadgets, but it was pretty expensive. Then again, it is an independent store and they've gotta pay the bills. I didn't get anything, but would come back to buy something really high quality that I want to keep forever. (Oh, my favorite part of the store was the little display with a curtain that said "adults only". When you peeked in there was a cake mold shaped like a penis. Awesome.) read more

Last night, I attended the sausage making class at The Brooklyn Kitchen. It was wonderful. The instructor was a butcher (former pastry chef) at The Meat Hook who was super informative and had a great attitude. We learned the sausage basics including meat ratio, how to mix, the desired texture and how long to mix. During class we mixed the meat with seasoning and stuffed sausage into casing. We had one break during class to sample 5 sausages from The Meat Hook and walked around the store. At the end of class, each student took home 2 sausages. The class could have been better if there were three action stations instead of two, so that more students could get their hands dirty. Because there were only two action stations, a lot of us were standing around. Overall, I recommend this class because the instructor was helpful and professional. read more

Review of the Shop: This place really is quite dangerous. Not only do they have a bunch of crazy cool gadgets and tools, they also have some hard to find food products. If you've spent any time in the South, you may be interested to know that they have hot boiled peanuts in a can. They also have ghost peppers- which I bought and are now haunting my pantry (I'm scared to use them, as they are hot!). If you shop on the same day as taking a class you get 10% off- which is a brilliant tactic on their part as it made my purchases easier to justify. We ventured out to Brooklyn for the sourdough bread class with Nathan Leamy. I hadn't read the class description too closely and thus assumed that we would each be baking some bread during the class but it turns out that it was more of a demo style class where Nathan did most of the bread making as he walked us through the art of sourdough. Even though I was initially a little disappointed about not being able to get my hands dirty, I think the class format actually worked out really well. Nathan was great - he seemed to know a great deal about breads from all kinds of different parts of the world. For anyone who's interested in sourdough bread making, it turns out that having someone as knowledgable as Nathan point out tips and address possible problem areas is pretty valuable. Nathan also shared some of his sourdough starter with us to take home which I've subsequently used to make delicious sourdough loaves at home. It's the gift that will keep on giving so long as I continue to feed it flour and water. With the 10% discount on Brooklyn Kitchen merch that came with the class, I browsed their wares and was impressed by the range of items that they carried - including some random but delicious things that I'd have a hard time finding in our nearby Whole Foods such as vanilla paste and Jersey Cow butter. I'm not sure it's necessarily worth a trek just for the merchandise, but pair a class with shopping the store and you're all set for a foodie evening. read more

No seriously - they seem to have everything, with a great super helpful staff. Maybe I'll try some classes because it's pretty pathetic how little I know. The Brooklyn Kitchen is in one of the last places you'd probably think to put a cooking supply store. It is in a trendy neighborhood (border of the 'Burg and Gpoint), but away from the bustle of the Bedford Ave area. The Meat Hook is part of the store (see my other review) and as you shop for spices, vegetables, etc., you can watch the butchers skillfully cutting up chops, steaks, and other delicious meats. Upon first visit, you may find yourself thinking of Williams-Sonoma, Sur la Table, and Dean & DeLuca. But here, you can take pride knowing that you are supporting small businesses. The store itself has everything: a produce case, with everything from baby spinach to stinging nettles; bulk and jarred salts, peppers, and spices; local sauces, syrups, and pickles (Rick's Picks); quirky kitchen gadgets; utensils; and cookbooks. I especially enjoyed the oils and vinegars, which are sold out of large barrels by the liter. The upstairs is split between baking supplies and sale items. There is also a huge room where they offer all kinds of fun classes. (You can use their gift cards for the classes too!) The staff was helpful and casual, without that commercialized chain pushiness. I would probably still stick to my beloved stores on the Bowery for my random kitchen supplies (pots, pans, whisks, etc.), especially because the price difference can be so great. But I would come back again, if I was in the area, for the selection of food products. If you find yourself on Frost and Meeker, take a look. read more

4.5 stars, but I'm averaging up since it was such a great overall experience. The store itself I'd give four stars, as some items were overpriced and others were dusty/hadn't been maintained in a while. Staff was very friendly though, helping me navigate the store to find what I needed. I also attended a Knife Skills 101 class, which was extremely helpful and had a great teacher. She started with the basics and then we moved into hands-on exercises, learning the proper way to cut vegetables and dice an onion. I do a lot of cooking at home, so it was definitely worth the cost of the class to save time and make prep work more efficient. If you decide to take a class there, register early as they do sell out fast. I'm intrigued by a couple other classes so I'll probably return--I know other reviewers have had poor experiences with the cooking classes, so I'll likely stick with the skill-learning ones. I took a cooking class here so I'm not reviewing the store. We had a group of 13 and attended the cooking class on a Saturday night. The ingredients were portioned out when we arrived. The instructor read the menu so we knew what we were preparing, then she let us know we could prepare the dish we were most interested in. Folks who wanted to learn more about preparing fish could work there, folks who wanted to learn more about stuffed artichokes could work there, etc. I was expecting more instruction (because I thought this was a cooking class), but we were mostly just reading a recipe off of a piece of paper and following the instructions. The instructor walked around to observe each group, but never really gave any cooking advice. This ended up being a great group activity and everyone had fun. We had our fill with food and wine and had plenty of time to talk to one another and have fun cooking. I'd recommend this activity to others. If you want an intense cooking course with lots of direction from the instructor, this isn't for you, but if you'd like a more laid back cooking experience where you can drink wine and cook a bit, then this is right up your alley. read more

Overall the knife skills class I took beat expectations (which were already pretty high) and the store itself has a lot of useful kitchen items with decent prices and a friendly staff (who lets you chop carrots with a bunch of knives as you try them out, a very nice touch). # Class Part Review # As a birthday present, my GF and I took a Knife Skills class here, which was a small intimate class (10 people total I think), with a very nice, funny and informative teacher (Diamond was her name, I highly highly recommend her, she makes cooking fun for sure). I think it is hard anytime 10 strangers end up in a room together after a long day at work about to take a cooking class. Our teacher was able to break the ice by being funny, informative and flexible all at the same time, that made everyone else feel comfortable. We were able to learn techniques for cutting several vegetables (a couple of different techniques per vegetable too) and an orange at the end. All of the different cuts were demoed and then practiced while our teacher walked around giving one on one help as people needed it. The time flew by, there was beer for everyone and we all laughed our way through the class, encouraging one another. We both will take another class with Diamond in the future as we thought she was a great, effective and fun teacher. It is a great way to improve your skills in the kitchen, get away from the screen and have an excuse to make it out of the house on a work night. # Store Review # We came back a few days later to use our 10% off coupon, which you receive when you take a class. We needed to round out our knife set, as we only really had one good knife, which is a chefs knife. Not only were we walked through a wide amount of different knives and styles, but then got to spend a while chopping carrots and feeling which ones were most comfortable. I feel like I wouldn't have gotten that level of attention and the ability to feel the knives in action at other places. The person helping us was not pushy one bit also, which feels really nice when you arent 100% sure you will buy anything. We ended up buying a wide array of items as we needed to stock the kitchen and the prices were reasonable. Versus some of the kitchen stores in NYC this place is well curated, competitive in pricing and the staff is always willing to help. In the future we will be back for our kitchen needs. read more

My amazing boyfriend took me to the Taste of Spain cooking class on 7/17/15. Chef Ken and sous chef Kyle were so fun and so informative. We greatly enjoyed the free flowing wine, and the space was open and lovely. We made new friends as we were all cooking together- two groups of 6 people each. We liked that it was small enough to facilitate a good report among the guests and Ken and Kyle. We started out by learning basic knife skills. Which was seriously helpful since I've been doing everything all wrong. The appetizer we made was blistered shisito peppers, something I will definitely be making these again at home. We also assembled a nice basic salad and Ken and Kyle prepared a potato dish. The main dish was paella, definitely a lot more involved and less likely for me to be repeating. But it was DELICIOUS and such a good and hearty meal. Especially after the most wine ever. Which is probably why we left without the recipes. Hopefully someone can email them to us? Pretty please? We definitely want to do another class soon. Such a perfect and out of the ordinary date night. And probably for less than the cost of a normal dinner at a restaurant (well, one with lots and lots of wine). And I definitely recommend any class taught by Ken. Can't wait to go back! read more

Oh this place, so cute, I pink puffy hear it. Now, the selection isn't nearly as extensive as some place like Broadway Panhandler or even Sur la Table but it is expertly curated and they have fantastic cookbooks to choose from. I think the real selling point of this place is the deli counter Meat Hook and the giant space for demonstrations in the back. I came here for Joy the Baker's demonstration a few weeks ago and it's a fantastic space with lots of room to see and you don't feel like you have to strain to hear the person speaking. They have a decent selection of specialty ingredients and their accouterments. It's super cute if in the middle of freakin' nowhere. I would definitely come back for more demonstrations and probably buy a bunch more stuff I don't really need. read more

The Brooklyn Kitchen is a place that I wish I had the balls to open myself. A specialty food/kitchen supply store with event spaces in the back and upstairs. I came here for a special event called #CookIt, but I was so taken back by the store itself, I found perusing the place more riveting than the actual event. Every shelf and corner is something that you "OOH have been meaning to buy this for forever!" and that you "ABSOLUTELY must have right now." If I were made of money and did not have an amazon prime account--hands down, this is where I'd buy all my kitchen knick knacks. But for now, I just setlled on a jar of Pandan paste and Gochujang sriracha! read more

I love this place. Even if it's a bit out of the way, coming from Astoria, it's so worth the trip. I've taken two classes here and they have both been well worth the price. Everything is so hands on and the teachers are top notch. The 10% discount on merchandise after the class doesn't hurt either. Can't wait to come back for another class! read more

Really cool store with a grocery area, meat market, just about very kitchen gadget, books, classes etc. We came for the Halloween Candy class and had a great time. Everything was delish, the instructor was great and everything is very hands on. Can't wait to try out another class soon!! read more
