I bought a wilton "beautiful gum paste flower" instruction book for 9 dollars when online people are selling it cheaper, also the "fine art of cake decorating" they tried to sell me for 20$ when as I said before there are several cheaper(Nicer) options online. Booked a class over a month before... got a confirmation the day before then 4 hours before the class I got a call that 7 out of 9 students had just cancelled because of thanksgiving being 3 days away and they're moving the class to the following week. I made plans to be off for work on the actual day and couldn't make the next class. They did offer me a refund but I was looking forward to the class. The cancellation policy for the other "7 people" I guess was bull. The next classes are in 5 months and the price went up almost double. Reading comments that other classes were cancelled the same way are a confirmation that it's a consistent problem for this place and not a good look. read more

I would not recommend signing up for one of their classes unfortunately. I booked one that was scheduled for June 22nd and it was moved to the next weekend because of scheduling issues. Whatever, not a big deal. Then I get a cancellation email for 7/29 followed later in the day by an email saying that cancellation email was sent by accident and they're still on. Strange but okay. Then a few days later they cancel the 7/29 class for real. Now the class is pushed another week to July 6th. At this point it's annoying that they can't seem to pick a date for a class THEY scheduled but I'm around this weekend and not doing anything better so I'll stay in it. Today I get an email saying they're postponing AGAIN to 7/13. At this point, I'm not sure this class will ever happen so I'll be signing up at a place that actually sticks to the schedule they create. One or two cancellations I can understand but they did it four times. In a four week period. Strange way to run a business. read more

Went in this afternoon for some last minute cake supplies. The owner was pretty preoccupied but the young man working was very helpful and courteous. He offered help in every area I could need it and even set the items Id accumulated on the counter to free my arm space. I will definitely go back for my baking needs. Everything you are reading about the man who runs this store being rude and difficult is true. Before I go any further, I will say that I gave this place two stars (instead of one, or zero if it were an option) because when Mr. Condescending is not working, the young boys who do work are kind, considerate, easier to understand and far more helpful. If I could enter this store only when they were working, I would. My first two experiences at Sugar Room WERE when just the young men were working; they were great experiences as the men were SO helpful with my cake project. However, when I entered the third time (as I was making a large scale wedding cake and had to go back a few times for supplies), the man I assume to be the owner was there. I told him I needed a box to transport the cake. I told him the sizes of the cake but explained I needed something bigger because I would have cake balls on the outside of the cake, expanding the diameter. He seemed to speak English somewhat ok, but for some reason, there was an obvious language barrier because not only was he NOT understanding me (or maybe I was not understanding him?), but we were eventually shouting at each other (WHO SHOUTS AT A CUSTOMER?) because we could not seem to properly communicate and there was quite a bit of back and forth. FINALLY, he gives me boxes and walks me up to the register to pay. As I am about to pay, I decide to be kind and say "I am sorry, this is just a very stressful project and I'm on a time crunch; I need to get the box right because I don't have time to come back" to which he says "oh don't worry, you'll be back". "Why?!" I asked. His response was "BECAUSE you won't listen to me and you are taking the wrong sized box!" Excuse me? I immediately told him that, again, I did not have the time to come back so PLEASE GUIDE ME TO THE RIGHT BOX. Well guess what? Even after giving me a bigger box, I still had to go back because the bottom tier DIDN'T FIT and I NEEDED A BIGGER BOX. When I went back, he was there, but so was one of the younger men who I immediately went to assist me AND, without any miscommunication or trouble, got me the right sized box. THAT is how you treat a customer. Not by condescending on them because you think you know everything about cakes, yet really, just can't seem to understand Engish very well. Mr. Condescending cake man won't be seeing me in the store ever again; there are plenty of other places in the Queens/ NYC area for my cake needs and I'd much rather give them my business than a rude store owner who clearly treats all his customers this way. read more

So I arrive at Sugar Room around 6:15pm on a Monday evening, didn't even get my two feet in the door when the person behind the counter started shouting they were closed. Even the customer, that was still shopping in the store, told me to read the sign on the door saying it was closed. WTF??? Sugar Room's website posted their hours as Mon-Sat 10:00 am to 7:30 pm...so much for (window) shopping in this store ever again. I'm gonna stick to Pfeil & Holing on Northern Blvd & 58 St for my cake decorating needs, definitely much friendlier, they have an online catalog, AND they won't throw you out. I am sooooo disappointed with Sugar Room. Good customer service is all about bringing customers back. You won't be seeing me there. I think Sugar Room owes me a couple stars! read more

I'm a fan of this store only because it very convenient that I live near by and they always have what I need when Michaels doesn't. The only negative thing I can say is that the owner is let's say "moody". His face expression says it all. Sometimes he seems nice and helpful, then other times it like, "dude, lighten up. I'm a customer and not trying to invade your space." I enjoy the store more when he is not around because his other young workers are super nice, very helpful and not "moody". I like to chat with them sometimes cause they are really cool. If you want to make a fancy/impressive cake, this is THE place to get your supplies. They have any cake and cookie supply you could imagine: instructional books, color dye, tons of sprinkles, cake forms, anything! I recently went here for some pre-dyed fondant. They were very helpful. I had never bought fondant before and the smallest tubs they had were $12 each (this place serves a lot of professional cake decorators). Even though I didn't need that much fondant, the good thing is that it takes a really long time to go bad! They also host cake decorating classes. read more

I was a student of the Sugar Room. my experience there has been a great one. I do not speak Spanish - how ever he interpreted for me as well. He is a good teacher- he has years of experience in the culinary arts and he is good at what he does. Juan is really passionate about teaching and baking- he doesn't like fooling around and a lot of talking in his class- but then again no teacher does. Every time I go to his store I am always helped, no attitudes. All of his recipes are really good and delicious as well. I love the Sugar room and their staff. Once you get to know Juan you would love him he is a really nice person. He just doesn't like being ran over and as a business person you have to stand your ground. I continue to go there at least 3 times a month and I live in Brooklyn- it is worth the trip. Plus the supplies he carries are hard to find anywhere else except for the internet read more

I am giving two stars because the young men who sometimes work there are very polite, helpful and EASY TO UNDERSTAND/EASILLY UNDERSTAND YOU! I have to agree with the other 'less than impressed' reviewers that the owner is too big for his britches. I was having a bit of a problem with drizzling the colored chocolate [Wilson's brand I got from Michaels] over chocolate covered oreos and the little scoop/drizzling spoon was just not working and I asked him for advice... he said he hated Wilson chocolate and will not stock it 'because of that reason'... meanwhile he stocks other Wilson's brand things. the only problem I was having as covering the oreos was fine was the spoon didn't seem to work -- the chocolate was too thick for it to look halfway decent. so anyway... I get the colored chocolate discs he sells and guess what... they melt EVEN WORSE -- IN FACT, WAY WORSE THAN THE WILSON'S!!! WAY WORSE! like 30 seconds stir, 30 more seconds -- burnt!!!! what??? read more

He is an excellent teacher, patient, helpful, informative. He gave excellent instructions that really helped to put me on track. The work area is lovely, clean, cheerful and well organized. Sincerely the best customer service ever with the two younger guys that are at the counter. They are so helpful and give tips when you are unsure of using a new product. The owner is also nice and gives suggestions. If they don't have something that you want and you give them enough notice they can often order it. Why I gave it this rating is due to I was going there today to get a few things and leave. Now my uncomfortable thing I had experienced is the owner. He was by the register, and one of his workers was by the stairs, most likely putting away goods. I asked for something simple since the owner asked if he could help just come and ask, and I did. Instead of giving me a hospitable way of talking to me since I'm a customer, he talked down to me like I'm feeble-minded and don't know what I'm talking about. First things first, as a person that owns the store, you should be cherishing every customer that walks through your door, especially with what covid did to most retail stores. But you, sir, lost a customer. And this isn't the first time you gave me an attitude for no reason! I was a student at the Sugar Room for about a month and Mr. Cake Master (not) told me to stop the class because I didn't understand Spanish .. I had to wait until the next class that was going to start the following month and start all over again . I spoke to him explaining how that was absurd and how I wanted a refund and he refused .. So basically I got robbed for a good 450 and that's not including the money I spent in his store . Its unfortunate that we have to deal with Unprofessional and ignorant people in this world.... I scheduled a class for this weekend at the Sugar Room two months ago. The day before the class I received confirmation that the class was still scheduled to take place. I traveled 2 1/2 hours out to the Sugar Room in Queens to take the class only to be told that the class was cancelled due to the holiday weekend! (I even made sure to arrive there early!) There had been no additional emails, calls, or any other type of communication from anyone to let me know that the class had been cancelled! The class had been rescheduled for the following week, but I cannot make it since I have a prior commitment during that time. Fortunately my money was fully refunded to me. The day AFTER the class was to have taken place was when I received the cancellation! I am glad I received my money back, which is the least that they could've done, but this is no way to conduct business. I wasted a day that I could've used to do something else. I really do not feel any motivation to reschedule the class at all. read more

I frequent here before I became a pastry chef, and I still come here for my baking supplies and advice. I have never had a bad experience here, but I have to say that I have been witness to customer's bad behavior, towards the staff here. The hole in the ceiling was the result of the heavy showers that we have been getting here in NY, of which it took the owner less than 2 days to get fixed. As a small business owner that is impressive. I have witnessed customers coming in asking for cryptic things. I find complaints come from the hobbyists and the amateurs. Who are either curious to try something new, or really don't know what they are looking for. The store is small enough that one can observe it from behind the counter, and all of the staff graciously always ask the customers if they need assistance. They are not mind readers, and I feel that people in their own mindspace don't realize this, or the crappy baggage they carry around with them WHERE EVER they go. I highly recommend this store due to its wall to wall supplies for the professional and the newbie. If there is a new item out chances are they have it. The owner's knowledge is kitchen and street smart being able to provide short cuts for any baking/decorating dilemma. All in all, it sickens me how insensitive and empowering people can be having the ability to post negative comments here. I denounce them as I refer people here and all of the feedback has been positive. I appreciate this establishment, their selection, their prices, their location (food is awesome out here). i have been to this store about 4 times and i have nothing negative to say! i was helped by to different associates both a young lady and young man have been kind and very helpful.! i have only seen the older gentlemen once and he was pleasent enough to me. they have better prices than NY cake (Thank heavens because NY cake is a rip off & has terrible custmer service ) and are located right near the train so its easy enough to get to. they always have better brands of fondant and candy melts than michaels ! i hope i continue to have good experiences here ! read more

Had to take a moment to praise this place. First off, most people think prices as smaller shops aren't as good as big stores, but I've found the prices here way better than Bed Bath and Beyond, etc. Just today I got a baking rack for $6 - much better than I'd seen even at Kmart. The people who work there are super helpful, and check on stock, answer questions about products. I got a beautiful springform pan for my parents - much nicer than any I'd seen at BBB, cost maybe around $12, and they always mention how great it is. read more
