I am a spoiled West Coaster who hails from the Southern California suburbs. I have a car and easy access to Surfas, Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma and other fancy (albeit chains....) specialty food markets/suppliers. The Brooklyn Kitchen was walking distance from my best friend's apartment in Williamsburg and I wanted to stock her studio with baking supplies. Wowza, things are pricey here. And...your options are limited (don't get me wrong, the store has a lot of items but you're a bit limited to one or two brands of each item). It's a small store with a lot of great stuff but I had to really think through my purchases. It might have been cheaper for me to order some items online and pay the shipping for it be delivered to my friend's place. That says a lot... One baking sheet, one cookie cutter, 12 oz of semisweet chocolate and a rolling pin set me back $40. I wandered around the store for a while and lingered next to the baking goods for a LONG time and no one came up to help me or asked if I needed anything. Granted, if I really needed something, I could have asked but I did not feel like the staff were as friendly as described in other yelp reviews. The person who rang me up was friendly enough but there were definitely more staff than customers in the store while I was browsing and I still felt sort of alone. Maybe I need more hand holding when it comes shopping for kitchen supplies. read more

This place is amazing! It was getting so annoying by having to go to Manhattan every time I need a new baking pan or kitchen gadget and now I can find it all in my own neighborhood! I could spend hours and thousands here...easily. I am enthralled to look at the collections of vintage cookware and I know my husband is going to kill me when he finds out what I spent on a chip and dip set. Its nice to feed my addiction to vintage kitchenware in person rather than online. This place is a must go to and hopefully I can make the time to fit in some of their classes. read more

This is the most adorable kitchen store! It is my favorite of any kitchen store in NYC. I'm really into vintage (and vintage-inspired) cookware and dishware and this place has some great stuff and their stock always seems to be changing. Sigg water bottles, wine carriers, hard-boiled egg holders, eco-friendly grocery bags, cooking supplies for kids to use, silverware, dishes, mixing bowls, appliances, etc... you name it, these guys probably have it! I took a fresh pasta class today with Kat Randazzo and had a WONDERFUL lesson/experience/meal! Kat is fabulous and the lesson was very well organized and all the steps were wonderfully explained! She had us make the pasta by hand and demo'd making the pasta in a food processor. We all had an opportunity to roll and cut dough for both fettucine and for a ravioli. Kat then prepared the sauces herself (a delish marinara for the fettucine and a sage brown butter for the ravioli) and tossed. She demo'd the brown butter twice. The marinara was prepared. I would've loved to have made the sauces but they try to keep the classes short enough to maintain the interest of the the students so I'm ok with that. Her recipes for everything were included so I'll be sure to make it all at home! Wine was also served so I definitely consider that a party! :) Afterwards, I chose to show my appreciation by both leaving wonderful feedback for the class and Kat as well by purchasing a ravioli press AND pasta attachments for my stand mixer (we used manual/hand crank pasta rollers / cutters in the class but as I have a stand mixer I decided to go the whole way). The Brooklyn Kitchen store is very cute and they have a decent selection. I'm a big Amazon shopper and everything I purchased I know I could've gotten for less online - and I will for future purposes but I also believe in supporting small business so I gave them the sales. I didn't try anything from their meat shop but it seemed to also be very popular. Getting there isn't too difficult by car though know that street parking can be tricky, so if you want you can park across the store right under the BQE (I'm not sure of parking rules so just an FYI). read more

I walked into The Brooklyn Kitchen today and was greeted with friendliness and an offer of help. I am not a chef and needed to buy a bunch of ramekins (I didn't even know how to pronounce ramekins till they nicely corrected me). They seemed to have everything one might need for the kitchen, like a William Sonoma with an extra ingredient ... love! (yeah I wish Carla won on Top Chef) Anyway another reason I wanted to write a review was that I first went to Whisk on Bedford Ave. walked in there wandered around hopelessly for maybe 8 minutes and they wouldn't even look at me and when one finally did she gave me evil side eye and quickly turned away!? The best part of the Brooklyn Kitchen is the store's wonderful owners Taylor and Harry. They are friendly, fun people eager to help you find whatever it is you need. They are also the kind of people who think "egg pants" are an item worth stocking in a kitchen supply store, and that is my kind of people. The Brooklyn Kitchen is a great spot for kitchen gift items since most of the items are high end and a little expensive. You will also find vintage cookware, and they carry a wide array of knives and even offer classes on knife skills. Another popular class held at the BK is their make your own kombucha workshop. I haven't been to any of the classes at Brooklyn Kitchen. And I rarely buy kitchen tools here. But I do like the small food selection, and once I got to know it some of the stuff they stock just keeps on showing-up on my shopping list. This winter I really liked their home-made stocks. I ruined a cast iron pan (oops!), so it was nice to have somewhere nearby that always has lard so I could re-season it. This winter they were the only place the consistently had Jerusalem artichokes in stock. And a few weeks ago I made a brunch frittata with the duck eggs and it was DELICIOUS!! My boyfriend also likes all the "exotic" salts and truffle oils that I bring home. The popcorn we make could be a bar snack at Dram. read more

The classes here are superb. I've taken both Knife Skills and Mexican Street Food. Both classes were suitable for beginners or experienced cooks. Both teachers were exceptional - personable, clear in their explanations, patient in their corrections, and all in all it made for a fun evening. Every time I stop in I find something else that I desperately need and can't live without. This place is dangerously located between the subway and my apartment and I find it impossible to walk by when it's open without popping in to browse. I'm not surprised about the great customer service review, the owners are incredibly cool and dedicated to their craft. My husband was talking knives with them and they were knowledgeable about every brand he mentioned and willing to order anything we needed. I haven't had a chance to attend any of the classes yet, but I'm looking forward to doing that this winter when I'm in town more often. They have a range of classes from ice cream making to pig butchering and also do neighborhood events like pie baking, pumpkin carving, chili cookoff etc. Regarding the vintage gear, they have a garage full of kitchenware, dishes, tables, chairs, aprons etc which they rotate through the store so there's often something new to look at. I find myself coming up with excuses to visit the store all the time. Honey... I really need a zombie brain Jell-o mold right now, be right back! Whether you're looking for a fancy castle cake pan or a dishtowel, they have it all and if they don't, they'll order it for you. All-in-all, a great addition to the community. read more

I've taken two classes at the Brooklyn Kitchen, and both were excellent experiences. After years of fearing anything yeasted, I'm now baking weekly sourdough loaves thanks to "Artisanal Sourdough Bread in the French Tradition." My loaves are slowly getting less brick and more Baltazar, and the incredible pride I feel everytime I take a boule from the oven more than justifies the relative low cost of the class (which comes with instructions as well as your own sourdough starter). Butchering for Swingers was a totally difficult kind of experience, and while I have still never butchered anything, I now feel very confident when going into a butcher shop. Having the opportunity to ask questions of the wonderful people from the Meat Hook was unique and truly helpful. These classes are not so much hands on experiences as a chance to discuss and learn about the art and science behind cooking. They've very social as well, with ample opportunities to snack, drink, and taste. read more

Brooklyn Kitchen is not your average kitchen supply store. Sure, you can go here for new pots and pans, as well as fancy wine glasses, silverware, and appliances. The best part about the new and improved Brooklyn Kitchen is by far the labs. Each week, they conduct 4-5 classes in beer brewing, preserving meats, bread making, kombucha, basically anything you can think of! A friend and I took Intro to Homebrewing and got all the materials necessary to start making our own beer. BK actually carries a variety of dry malts, malt extract, grains, hops, and yeast. Every time we've gone there, we have excellent service and a lot of tips from the employees who just happen to homebrew themselves. Everyone that works here has a specialty, and you can find someone who is experienced at almost anything in the kitchen. The prices are up there, but everything is exceptional quality. Compared to other Williamsburg stores in the area, I don't ever feel ripped off at Brooklyn Kitchen. read more

BUT was surprised visiting the store today to find tasteless political posters hanging everywhere. BLM, anti this and that. Could you not leave the protest posters at home?! Not making a statement here, but rather saying this is not the place for this - and is annoying - when all I want to do is get away from the media madness and enjoy shopping without these stupid posters hanging around. This is a destination spot along my rambling dog walks. I love looking through the windows and all the things I wish I owned. They had a sidewalk sale recently and I happened to bike past. I was in need of a bundt cake pan and lo and behold! What did I find? A friggin' bundt cake pan on sale! Marked down because it had a dent. But you know what? You bake a chocolate cake in that bad-boy and who the hell is going to notice a dent in the cake? Nobody. If I had more money, I would totally shop there all the time. I went to the fresh pasta class this month and I'm a total convert. Great, clear instruction from Brendan - I've already made fresh pasta 3 times since without a misshap. Last year I got my man a home brewing class there as well and he loved it. The rest of the class was really cool. My only beef was the location which is crappy and out of the way, even for Brooklyn. It's tough to tell on a map, but it's on the south side of the overpass, not the north. The store itself is really reasonable - I know people think it's spendy, but try shopping at Williams Sonoma. I got a great ricer for making gnocci for $15 and couldn't resist some sweet little pickling manuals and some teas. I'll be back for more classes when the weather improves. read more

Unfortunately when I took my parents by who were visiting from out of town the place was playing music that was a constant stream of motherf**ker and f**k every other line. It was highly inappropriate for a business that has a clientele of both parents with children and older people. The hipsters running the place may enjoy that music and think the cursing is really cool, but most people find it offensive. And I found it offensive that they played it. read more

This review is specifically about the "Pickling Class" taught by Bob McClure of McClure's PIckles, which I went to with my boyfriend for his birthday. I figured since one of the very successful McClure brothers was teaching it that it would be a full-on informative class on how to pickle with types of pickles, with pickle tasting and sampling. Boy was I surprised to find not a pickle around to sample or try. Would it kill the pickle business owner to sacrifice just one jar for everyone to taste at least a piece of a pickle? All the talking we did about pickling had me craving one so bad, it almost seemed ridiculous to not have a few on a plate on the table. He should've had a plate on each table with a few cut up pieces of the various delicious types of pickles his company makes. This doesn't seem that extreme to expect. After all the CEO of a pickling business was standing right in front of a bunch of people who had paid to be there! Anyway, we wound up pickling Cauliflower in this class, which I was less than thrilled about. To me, Cauliflower is perhaps one of the least exciting foods to eat ... and it seems I am not alone in feeling this way since McClure's Pickles don't even sell pickled Cauliflower themselves! All in all, the class seemed cheap for them to do, and Bob McClure seemed less than thrilled to be there. He seemed unenthusiastic about pickling Cauliflower....I don't blame him. As a teacher of a demo class, Bob McClure should realize that many of the people at the class were couples on dates, or there for birthdays, or anniversaries and that he should've worked a bit harder at being entertaining. Get that scowl off your face Bob, you're making like $800 or more from one class in one hour! Make it fun/romanitc/memorable. If not, maybe you shouldn't be teaching it. Bob, do what you do best....run a company that sells crazy expensive pickles. Oh and don't give any pickles away for free, god forbid! read more

Review of Shop: This place is awesome. The products are great and the staff is cool...except for one dbag. I don't know what his name is, but he is rather pretentious and definitely not good with people. When I asked if they carried mylar discs for wine pouring (I wanted to get one as a gift), he told me that HE had NEVER had problems pouring wine and that HE did not stock frivolous items. Dude, if you don't like them nor use them, fine. If you don't stock them, fine. But there was no need to give me a lecture in front of 5 staff members and numerous customers on how you think I'm a frivolous, and I'm going to assume by the tone of his voice, idiotic individual. This is the first store I've encountered in my lifetime where I literally want to buy EVERYTHING. The Brooklyn Kitchen is absolutely magical. If you love to cook, and constantly fantasize about building your kitchen arsenal, this is the store for you. They have somehow delved into my subconscious and also stocked their shelves with everything I never new I needed, but now plan on buying. I need to somehow win a shopping spree here, a la "Nickelodeon's Super Toy Run". For those of you that aren't of the Nickelodeon Generation, see exhibit A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NBSq03SAtw They are fully stocked on Le Creuset and All-Clad, they have a huge cast iron selection, an amazing knife selection, baking supplies, tableware, serveware, grills, and appliances. LIterally, anything you could ever imagine to cook with, make cocktails with, drink coffee or tea with, et cetera. They have an awesome bulk section....selling everything from grains to made-in-house-vinegars. Cheese supplies, tagines, foodie zines, grown-in-house-hydroponic-herbs, and lunchboxes. They also have a wide variety of rustic wooden cutting boards, one of my personal favorites. Gadgets, gizmos, pasta makers, cute little knick nacks. They have spices, sauces, extracts, canning & preserving supplies, and COOKBOOKS GALORE. Really, I could go on forever. They teach cooking classes here, and also will inspire you to cook just by being inside the store. There is also a "Single Foodies" wall where you can post your classified ad to help find your foodie lover. If you are anywhere in the area, love food, and haven't yet been to the Brooklyn Kitchen, you need to do so A.S.A.P. Also, The Brooklyn Kitchen shares their space with The MeatHook. So while you are there, take a gander at one of the most incredible butcher collectives in existence. They sell outstanding meat from small, family-owned farms in New York, for around the same price you see in most supermarkets. There is also a little locavore produce section in the back that I'd highly recommend to you. Fresh picked herbs are sold in a cup of water for $2 - LOVE IT! The staff is amazing. They are all super-knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. They have pointed me in the right direction so many times. They will really tell it like it is. Everyone who works here seems to be constantly LOVING what they are doing, and I don't blame them because this place RULES. The prices are average. I'd say mostly everything is the same exact price you'd find online, or at other stores. I'm yet to see anything there that was over-priced. I would give this store 6 Stars if I could. read more

Signed up for a knife skills class after reading all the reviews and it definitely lived up to its word. We had Ken as our instructor and he was witty, knowledgable, and experienced. The class opened with the types of surfaces that are best to cut on and how to maintain/clean them. Then Ken took us through all different types of knives, what they're best used for, and maintenence. And finally, the majority of the class was spent on technique and types of cut. They even allow you to take all the veggies home that you use during the session. The pace of the class is perfect. Ken was very observant of his audience, just in case you were doing something that could be corrected (the class was roughly 15 people max). He didn't make you feel uncomfortable either. Location wise- kind of a random spot, but there's a lot of great eateries within a 10 minute walk. The place itself was cute (I wasn't expecting it to be a little market). All-in-all I'm definitely returning to this place for future classes. read more

Was walking by and noticed they were doing a bunch of free classes today. We stopped in for the pasta making class. They made it clear it wasn't the full class, and it was just making and rolling the dough. Still, for a free class, they made it interesting and fun. They even had a competition which added a bit to it. What surprised me most is that they had given the winner a free pasta roller and attachment. read more

Maybe you don't cook enough to justify purchasing a massive, vintage, lamb-splitting meat cleaver like the ones they sell here. But maybe you do. And even if you don't, maybe you should get one anyway. It's useful for all sorts of things, like cutting people. read more

I took the "Meat 101" cooking class taught by Lizzy, and I absolutely loved it. I learned several useful techniques and actually got to implement them in the class, which makes me think I'm far more likely to retain them than just by watching. I came here wanting to learn, rather than to just have a social experience and be fed a great meal, and I definitely feel like I got my money's worth -- AND the benefit of a great meal, since the food 'we' made turned out extremely delicious. The instructor and everyone else working the class was kind, the space is cool, the vibe was very pleasant (I went alone, and there was a good mix of couples and individuals, so I didn't feel like I was crashing a bunch of dates or anything), and I've spent the next two days cooking my own meals at home, so clearly I was inspired. I took the dumpling making class and overall it was pretty good. They were delicious, made with quality ingredients, and the instructors were pleasant. I have some feedback though in these areas (quick bullet-ed list and then more details below): 1. Initial orientation to the room and class was lacking 2. Trouble understanding the whole picture/ lack of direction 3. Everything made in group batches instead of individually 4. Unclear when to start eating vs still making them 5. Wasted food and effort at the end of class 1. We got there on time if not a couple mins early, but in hindsight it feels like we may have missed some initial instructions/orientation? We weren't told about the beer in the fridge, drinking water, or the snack tray on the other side of the room, had to figure it all out ourselves as we saw other people taking these things. If an orientation to the room was done before we got there (before the scheduled start time) you should tell the people who came in afterwards about it too. Also being able to drink during the class is an enticing selling feature that should be in the class details so people know beforehand. Be good to have wine there too instead of only beer. 2. The instructor was a very good chef but not a great trainer, good at showing each step hands on but not helping us see the whole picture. We started off watching her cut stuff for the vegetarian dumplings without knowing what she was making, then got sent back to the tables to cut stuff ourselves but didn't understand what we were making ourselves either. No one saw the bigger picture or knew what needed to happen next, and when we were done with one task just had to wait for the instructor to come around to tell us the next step individually. Try to explain how each task fits into the recipe better. Maybe some laminated instructions on the tables. 3. Wish we could have made our own batches of dumplings from start to finish, instead of everyone contributing to the same group batches, I know that's probably more work but it's better for educating us and a little weird to have everyone's hands in each other's food. Also some students got to cook them and others didn't. 4. While forming the dumplings we looked up and some people were already eating while we were still working, didn't know that was an option at that point... should have put the cooked dumplings in a warmer and made everyone keep working, or had everyone sample at the same time. 5. At the end we got to pack the leftovers up to take home (cooked and uncooked dumplings, and extra filling) but in a group no one wants to take too much at once in case others want more, so a bunch got wasted. Instead of the instructor saying "here's more, who wants to take home the last of it?" she just threw a whole uncooked tray of dumplings in the garbage, and maybe the filling and some cooked ones too. I would've happily taken everything home for leftovers but didn't get that chance because they were trying to clean up so quickly. And a large portion of those uncooked ones were ones that I had just made more of after most of the rest of people had stopped making, in the hopes they would get cooked and I could enjoy them. read more

It's really not same without Meathook. Everything looks poor quality from the meat counter to the "fresh" veg. stall. Buying ingredients for home cooking just got a whole lot harder in Greenpoint/Williamsburg. Someone needs the imagination to open up a store where a proper range of fresh food can be purchased. That will be Trader Joe's one day soon and perhaps even Whole Foods. Until then it's trudge around from shop to shop or like many give up and eat out. read more

They have a fritters and donut making class. I mean, does that get any more hip?!? Sweet friend & fellow yelper, Isabella W. signed us up for the class this past weekend as an early birthday present pour moi (I agree, I have the best friends)! We had a blast during the two-hourish class learning about the different styles of donut permutations (I like yeast over cake, btw), and we also had a hand at frying up our own easy to follow donut recipes. These came out absolutely delicious, and the best part was that there was an amply supply of donuts for the entire class of about 15 people. Our instructor, Meghan from Sullivan Bakery was just as sweet as that divine coffee glaze that we spread atop our yeast donuts. She was so sweet and nice and really knowledge about all things donuts, and of course, baking! The recipes she supplied for the class were all modifiable which was great because it afforded us to get a bit creative at home, while sticking to the lessons we picked up in the class. Apparently, the cooking classes at The Brooklyn Kitchen are wildly popular as birthday gifts, as there were two others I met at the class who were brought by their loved ones as a celebratory birthday treat. It's really a fun and unique way to spend an afternoon. They also have a shop where they sell fresh produce, and other kitchen supplies, utensils, bake ware and tchotchkes, and if you take a class, you will receive a 10% discount immediately after, which you can use only towards non-produce items. Unfortunately, we didn't get to use our 10% discount but we picked up a bar of Mast Brother's chocolate (Sea salt flavor @ $7.99), and several sausage links ($12.99 per pound) for grilling, as a last-ditch effort to enjoy the splendid fall weather we were having. I have to say the sausages were full of flavor and so fresh (Chipolata was my favorite)! Between the four of us we polished off all six/seven links! Also highly recommend the LAMB BACON, which I had never had before, but it was amazingly crispy and simple to grill. On the downside, the prices are a bit inflated here (for the classes & the market). I know it's sort of expected for Brooklyn, but if it were more affordable here, I think I'd definitely treat myself more often than not. I was also hoping they'd carry "Sunday Gravy" (http://sundaygravynyc.com/), which is a line I could definitely see doing extremely well at a place like The BK Kitchen.
