Local dancers and a band from the Bay Area.
    Gourmet G.

So I was in the Spokane area and my first night in town I actuly had nothing to do as my meetings didn't start until late the next day. So I figure, maybe I will see what's playing around here? I saw in some local alt-alt weekly from there that a band from the Bay Area was playing in some dive bar in a tiny town that orbits Spokane. I pondered if it would be worth the drive, so I scoped out social media. The band sounds OK, and it turns out the bar has a sort of "resident" band that plays in these crazy gothic steampunk outfits, and they're the opener. It seemed like the local band was really popular. The bar itself has mixed reviews and there are a few people here on Yelp saying the bar is homophobic or something...? The Bay Area band just got done at the Portland Pride events, so I figured, hmmm, backwoods gothic industrial steampunk homophobic dive bar meets Portland Pride-scented hippies from California? That is literally 100% my vibe. The reviews and media were TELLING my story, so to speak. Maybe it was heavier because I was there on 6/23, but there seemed to be a palpable occult vibe in air. Not sure if the bar is always that way, but there were a lot of cow skulls and what-not around. Washington as a whole is sort of moving in that direction (and I'm sure it's going to turn out just great for the health and continued existence of our civilization), but it seemed more pleasant, that is to say, more insidious here compared to Spokane proper, or Seattle for that matter. Like, this is the kind of place where soccer moms and bank tellers come for a beer after work and they're wearing semi-pornographic and Deftones t-shirts. Don't get me wrong, it is an overall chill vibe with a GREAT outside seating arrangement. The kind of place you can really let it all hang out. But it is kind of a weird place. Both bands were great. Especially the San Fran band, but the resident band loaned them their diehard fans and their fire dancers. The fiddle player for the resident band was really special, too. It was cool, their last song was a great cover of "Paint It Black," but their original songs are pretty strong. Almost has like an acoustic Tool or Alice In Chains kind of sound. I never saw any food while I was there, but I was not seeking it out. To conclude, the bar itself was fine. It's a backwoods dive bar, but it's awsome. It's in a little neighborhood, so there isn't tons of noise to compete with when you're trying to enjoy the music, which I really appreciated. Furthermore, for the record, I saw none of the discrimination or homophobia some people on here have accused the bar of. People love to wave that sh*t around these days, but it is a baseless claim as far as I can tell. I have zero doubt that if anyone of any stripe comes to The Bull Head and doesn't act like a jackass that they will get the same (surprisingly) good service that everyone gets. I will say there was an older dude that all the regulars seemed to give a lot of deference to, maybe he was the owner or an old regular or something...? He looked ancient, so maybe if you go and he's there don't give him a reason to think "kids these days" and you'll be fine. But that part is all conjecture, it could have just been some rando. I only went to the bar once in my life, and again, it seemed fine, no hate, no malice, just good beer and good music and really nice people.

    Happy Cinco!

As of late it seems like once I get the idea that I have tried all of the Spokane area breweries…read morethen when I pass through there are new brewery discoveries that I wasn't previously made aware of. West Plains Brewing is one of these and am glad that I became aware of it. The lady that was at the counter was super nice and very congenial to visit with so that was very nice. I was having a difficult time trying to decide out of their beer options as to what to have so I went with a taster set and that was a good choice to have made. I tried four different beers from that taster set and I liked them all very much! One of the beers was the Cerveza Fria which was the brewery's Mexican Lager. It was pleasant and refreshing with a slight biscuity flavor and a crispness to it that is perfect to refresh yourself with on warm days. Another beer I had was the Allegiance which was an Amber beer. It was biscuity also and went down easy where it would be very easy to get more of this beer in one sitting. The third beer I had was the Muddy Boots. I liked the maltiness in this beer. While the beer is rich to drink it also comes across as light bodied which gives it an overall nice balance. The fourth and final beer I had was an Oatmeal Stout by the name of Broken Paddle. I do like Oatmeal Stouts and this one was no exception. The flavors you can enjoy in this one are chocolate, coffee and roasty in the beer. The beer is smooth but also comes across as light bodied which you occasionally see in some stouts. A very nice visit to this brewery and worthy of returns whenever I am back in the area.

Very friendly staff and free popcorn! Like the ability to…read morepick different items for a charcuterie board. Seating is okay and they have plenty of games to choose from if you want to play one. Very clean bathrooms which always says a lot about a place.
