Occasion: Local bbq joint near our lake house Couldn't wait to check this place out while we were in the area recently as it's likely to be our new local hangout. Wasn't sure what to expect of this gas station/convenience store/quick service bbq restaurant/ice cream store/?!?! Seems like a place that tries to do so many things would struggle to get them all right, but from what I can tell they do a bang up job. The bbq was delicious - my test is whether or not I feel compelled to sauce it and not here. The sides were also formidable. We split a 2 meat platter and it was a nice size for us to split as a small dinner. Learned about a new product while I was there - the ice cream pint coozy. Some would probably say it's designed to take a pint home on a hot day but it would also work like a beer coozy to take a pint to go;) Went back the next night to try the ice cream and were not disappointed. They're short-staffed right now so they're using commercially procured waffle cones at the moment, so I'm hoping to try a homemade one on a future visit. Note: Please be patient with them. Like everywhere else, they are short staffed and struggling to stay open. I overheard one of them tell another that she came in on her day off to fill in for a few and ended up putting in a 13-hour day. Ed's Pitstop is overlooked because they are a gas station and convenient store. Their barbecue is amazing. They smoke their meats daily and offer pizza, burgers, fish and so much more. The staff is friendly and are always cleaning. The prices are reasonable and the quality is stellar. Never had a less than excellent meal here. It's so worth the stop. Stopped here while in Rice Lake and really enjoyed the meal. The cheese curds were excellent and haven't had ones that good in awhile. Wife had the pulled pork and it was moist and flavorful. I had the jalapeño burger, while not perfect was a good burger and wasn't too spicy. Very nice people working. Good bbq. Very disappointed though that they were out of brisket so I ordered ribs, was very small portion and honestly they weren't that great. I would've preferred them to be much more tender. I did like the pulled pork and the corn bread. I'm the Mac and cheese was ok as was the mashed potatoes. I haven't even tried the food yet. My issue is with the bbq sauce. You have 4 different kinds on the counter. I asked the young lady working if I could get some of each in the little to go cups. She said this wasn't possible. So she asked the cooks. They put one honey bbq with 3 originals for a pound and a half of meat. I asked for more and was given two additional cups of original. I know it sounds pretty petty but we travel a lot and are always stopping at different bbq places. I've never had somewhere be this stingy with bbq sauces. I came to your place instead of old southern because we wanted to give your restaurant a try. We drop $40 on meats and can't get sauces??? Are they made of gold? I even asked for containers to put some of the different sauces on the counter in and was told no. If you like bbq you without save this place could be for you!!!! Best of luck prying the sauce out of their non customer friendly hands if you're into that sort of thing. Update: Tried the brisket. Could have definitely used the extra sauce. This place is Great! The staff is always friendly and greet you as walk in. The convenience store/gas station part of it is what you see from the outside, but it is so much more! From espresso drinks that rival any of the Big chain coffee shops to ice cream that people come from miles around to get! The menu for food is awesome and includes Broasted chicken, full fish frys, thin or thick crust pizza, good burgers and quite possibly some of the best house smoked BBQ in the area!! We camp not far from Ed's and cannot say enough good things about Ed's Pit Stop. We go there each day to get a newspaper and a coffee or cappy. It is unreal all that they have at Ed's; lots of clothes, gifts, wondeful ice cream with their own waffle cones, and we have recently started enjoying a supper at their deli. My husband couldn't say enough about how good his hamburger was--moist and tasty. The gal working was super friendly and fun to talk to. I would highly recommend anyone going thru or to Birchwood, goes to Ed's Pit Stop--you could take hours to look at all of the stuff there and enjoy something to eat or drink!
