Great sandwich by staff that cares about the food in the experience even though it's just really a deli it's one of the few affordable places in town where you get something that's satisfying and puts a smile on your face. Their French dip is to die for, as well as their chili. I cried eating that chili. I almost agreed with other reviewers on the price bc the first day, they incorrectly charged us. But when we asked the next day, the tall, young white guy corrected it immediately. The service was so different (in a positive way) from when the European woman and man helped on day 1 vs when the young guy and the manager helped on day2. The young guy even asked one of who seemed to be a repeat customer to remind him of her name. As someone who is obsessed with customer service, it was an incredibly sweet interaction to watch. Great local deli in the heart of Aspen that is always very accommodating with our catering orders for flights. We always call and place an order over the phone and schedule our pickup after prepaying. It always works out perfect and they have never messed an order up. This is a true deli with tight quarters and stuff everywhere. You can just order meat or order from their sandwich menu. The staff is always helpful but they seem a little rough around the edges, in true deli fashion! Parking can be a bit of a pain but that's common with every business downtown Aspen and isn't their fault. We will definitely continue to order from here when we need catering orders filled as everyone has been very happy with our meals. read more

My wife sent me in to buy some (expensive) Chilean Sea Bass she saw on their website for $45/lb. I went in shortly before closing. After several mishaps with trying to charge the customer before me they rang up 1.8lbs and handed me the receipt for $190. As I walked to the door I realized the cost and turned around in the busy store to inquire. The cashier said "it's Aspen." After my wife told me I was insane and that's not what their website said, I emailed the store and called 10+x over several days. No one ever responded to the email. No one ever answered the phone. So I went to talk to the owner. He told me the online price is only for online and doesn't cover their $35,000 a month rent and that Aspen doesn't have great phone or internet. Super strange to me as my T-Mobile works fine and it had been 3 days since I sent the email. He said the online price was for online purchase. You can charge whatever you want, but if you're charging $90 a pound for fish (and it's double your online price) at least have some transparency and put a price on the fish in your case. read more

This establishment has both meat and a deli. I used the deli for an Italian sub sandwich. Cost was $8.00 which was great for an eight inches. Includes all the traditional meats and cheeses with tomatoes, lettuce and Italian dressing. Great sandwich. The store has been in business 30 years. All staff were professional and personable. I hate to have fallen in the middle on an old established business, but Butcher's Block was just A-Ok for me. I ordered the Famous Meatloaf Sandwich ($9.95) on sourdough bread. The bread was fresh but tasted like Italian bread. I also added lettuce, tomato, and light ketchup, which made the sandwich fall apart. There was a very thin layer of meatloaf so it seemed odd to use bread that could not hold the sandwich together. So while the sandwich almost filled me, it was just not exciting. The help was very nice, although there is no line structure so people just stand everywhere and shout out. Once you get outside with your food, there are some tables and chairs to dine at. There was also a two stool counter inside. All in all, not bad for a quick sandwich but nothing notable. read more

Okay when I first tried this place over 3 years ago, I was in LOVE with their sandwiches, especially the meatloaf one and their soups. Well something had changed and I thought it may had been just that one time, but nope this time around it confirmed it and my hubby had agreed. The sandwiches got smaller, but he still thinks the taste is the same. As for me, Not so much at all! I tried their meatloaf sandwich several times since and what use to be my "need" to have sandwich I craved for, no longer has my interest. The sandwich has Shrunk tremendously and the taste is missing some seasonings they once used, or perhaps it's because they give less meat, so the flavor is not as pronounced anymore. The prices use to be worth it, but because they literally give half the amount in a sad piece of bread it is now Over priced. We've had several other sandwiches, but I really only go there for the meatloaf. I've tried seeing if there were other ones that ease my cravings, but not so much. I don't think I will be eating here anymore as where it's been a constant disappointment in the past year. read more

We were visiting Aspen and looking for a deli sandwich. This fit the bill perfectly. Right next to the City Market. Outdoor seating. The inside is a little cramped. Staff was a bit grouchy. But the sandwiches were very good and the prices were reasonable. My wife had a cheese sandwich on wheat. They used four kinds of cheese, with baby spinach, tomato and mayo. She could only eat half. I wish I would have lived in Aspen 30 years ago when it was still a wild mountain town with the gusto that Hunter S Thompson admired and when sandwiches at The Butcher Block weren't so darn expensive! Yes, I know it is Aspen, but $8.50 for a meatloaf sandwich on your standard wheat bread is mildly shocking. I imagine it must be hard to pay rent selling sandwiches, so I understand. There is still a cheap Boar's Head bologna sandwich that is always a great fix if you need to relive your childhood, and there are counters stocked with fresh fish, meat and cheese. If I were an Aspenite hosting dinner parties, I could imagine frequenting the Block, but I would have to learn to cook first! On my last visit, I shared a cold meatloaf sandwich with my husband. It was good, but a little dry. I enjoy a nice tomato-sauced meatloaf sandwich with lots of onions and bell peppers. This one lacked the sauce and the peppers. After having one I really dont know why this meatloaf or any other sandwich here is or would be considered 'famous' for anything but perhaps overpriced mediocrity. Quite frankly, its rather below average - both in quality and portion. Except for the price. $11 or so for a sandwich on presliced bread reminiscent of supermarket standard loaf? The portion of meat (loaf) is quite skinny, the lettuce and tomato overpower the taste of the meat there is so little of it, and again - infamy has lead to mediocrity at a high price. Then again, Panera have better sandwiches and they are a national franchise, ffs. In a town with so many great places to eat, Aspen has so much better to offer. Don't bother. read more

This place has been around for a while, and its a good place to go and get a sandwich without spending an hour. Can run in and get something, eat it out front or take it on your way. We were invited by friends for lunch. What a fabulous place! Lunch was superb - best salmon I've had recently - and service was great. However, I could not quit looking at the assortment of freshly cut meats, sausages hanging that had been made in-house, and the types of pierogies were unlimited. If you are having a snack attack, this is where you need to be. This is a tiny shop filled with amazing smells, as well as seafood, meats and cheeses. The seafood and meat are all well and good, but I became kind of obsessed with their cheese. I saw some goat gouda that was beckoning to me, and I tried a sample. Delicious. We bought a half pound of it (around $14.00 for a half pound, that's some expensive cheese!) and were on our merry way. As it was, we shopped in Denver and hauled everything to Aspen! Great selection of seafood and meats here - with butchers who really know their trade. I can't say much about the deli items here but as far as the meat goes, I can vouch for the boneless sirloin! I regret not asking more about the meat but all I know is when I brought it home, cooked it, and ate it, it was some of the best meat I've ever had! It cooked up very nicely and didn't need much more than salt and pepper to make it a fantastic dinner. The price was also not much to complain about as it was about on par with the City Market next door, which is amazing considering the difference in quality! He ordered the bbq pork sandwich and said it was pretty good, giving it a 3 1/2. I went with the chicken and barley soup, which was just okay. They have tables outside for you to enjoy your meal or a small counter inside that seats 4. I noticed a number of people called in their sandwich orders in advance. I prefer the Grateful Deli for sandwiches, but this would definitely be the place if you wanted fresh meat or seafood, judging from what was on display.
