The Buttermilk Cafe was recommended to us by a friend who made a trip to Port Hope, and I can definitely say it was a great place to get a bite to eat. The overall calm atmosphere, sitting outside on the patio and having breakfast was perfect. Our server was very polite and friendly, answering all our questions regarding the menu and seating, and even helped give us directions to the nearby park from where we sat. The food was brought quickly, tasted amazing, and was filling, perfect to enjoy while not consuming too much of our time for the rest of the day. Was there for Christmas dinner. Used to love going there & was exited after working all day to have a special meal out, but did not realize it was under new ownership. I watched as the manager shook off crumbs from the used napkins & table runners that had been dumped on the floor after a table was cleared. He checked to see if they looked clean & if they weren't too bad, they went back onto a clean table for the next customers coming in. I was too stunned to say anything at the time but sure didn't eat much after that. Christmas Day was busy but use paper napkins if need be. Many elderly customers who are at risk when exposed to Covid, flu, RSV & any other saliva borne germs were put at risk. I will never ever go back. While the prices of food have skyrocketed, we still manage to eat out occasionally, especially if we find good value for the money. We were exploring Cobourg, ON, and found this restaurant. The lunch menu is predominantly breakfasts, and sandwiches/wraps/tartines (open faced fried sandwiches). Very delicious vegetarian tartine and roast beef tartine which included fries and coleslaw at very reasonable prices and generous portions. We broke down and ordered a chocolate and orange gluten-free mousse cake, and a favourite of mine-carrot cake. Both were fabulous - all made in-house! I know small towns and classic diner style restaurants don't always have a lot of vegetarian/vegan options, but I would like to see more than 1 dish. Home fries were justtttt cooked, not very crispy. Definitely not the best I've had. The salad was good, but lacking a diversity of flavour. That said, my friends got the classic breakfast and the big breakfast and they really loved it! Popped in for breakfast after an 8am Toronto pickup on the way back to Ottawa. We were both tried and grumpy, but quickly cheered up. Service was amazingly fast, the kitchen was ready for breakfast, I order ran extra side of bacon mod-way through the meal and it was on the table within a couple of minutes. Our waitress was at tentative, efficient, friendly and helpful. Food was brilliant. Best sausages I've had in a very long time. Wheat bread wonderful and light. Bacon to die for. We were in Cobourg for a couple of days and we're super glad we decided to pick this place to have breakfast. Their chicken pazzano was very flavourful and the flatbread really sealed the dish together - it was a light dish and I didn't leave feeling like I couldn't do anything for the rest of the day. I didn't order the farmhouse platter, but tried bits and pieces of everything on there. The pancakes were light, fluffy, and not overly sweet, and the meats and eggs were cooked perfectly ! The Buttermilk Cafe is clearly beloved, was packed on both a Friday and a Saturday. Luckily, the staff is sweet and speedy, and we were seated in a comfy booth quickly. A smiling and cheerful greeting welcomed us. The building they are housed in is obviously older - you see this reflected in the bathrooms and restaurant layout. Nice menu choices for breakfast. Great diner! My husband had a traditional breakfast plate which he said was "fine". He had asked for sausage but they gave him bacon instead I had the Tuscan Tartine and it was DELISH!!! It came with a Tuscan soup which wasn't anything special. It was bland and the vegetables in it were VERY over cooked. But the star of both plates was the bread the make in house. It's sooooooooooo good. Servers were super friendly. We had to wait about 15mins for a table but I expect that for at Sunday brunch time. We were driving g around Coburg on a road trip and decided to pop in for some lunch. We figured we must have made a good decision as the restaurant was about 3/4 with people who were on a first name basis I with the staff. Regulars are usually a good sign. Not in this case. We waited at the front as the hostess told us a bout 10 times it will just be a minutes as she walked around chit chatting with random customers and the coming back and saying "sorry I forgot what I was doing just a few more minutes" several times. We were finally seated. It was approximately 12 minutes before someone came over to offer us drinks or the chance to order. We were just packing up to leave. We ordered. I got the Odd Couple Tartine. It was not good. The chicken was dry and crumbly, the cheese was oily and thick and the honey mustard sauce was much too sweet. I was disappointed for sure. My husband ordered the Toasted Chicken Club and it was okay. Their homemade bread was quite nice and the Minestrone soup was not bad either. All and all I think this place is much more of an acquired taste than an instant hit. Save this place for the locals. read more

Really great food! I had the veggie Benedict and loved the balance of tomato, avocado, balsamic vinegar and the Benedict sauce My fiancé has the eggs Benedict he said it was great! My only issue is that a lot of the tables inside were reserved (some were reserved from hen we arrived to when we left with no one being served) so we had to sit outside and it was very hot with the sun right in my face, eventually the awning came out then it was pleasant. The wait wasn't too bad though it was a little past the usual lunch time so we ended up waiting maybe 15 minutes. Staff was very efficient, courteous and attentive. Food was good. Had the Prime Rib dinner special. Very tender. Good value. Includes soup or salad as a starter, and their homemade roll. The cut I got was med well rather than med rare. That was really my only complaint, but since it was towards the end of the dinner service I chalk it up as "you get what you can". Atmosphere was very much like a traditional diner with good food and great service. Next time I'm in town I would definitely try this place again. read more
