Terrible service, outrageous prices and the cake really isn't that good. Awful "lady" to deal with.

The Cake Lady, Farmers Market, Halifax. We stopped by 8 weeks ago... I ordered a piece of what I thought would be DELICIOUS Chocolate Torte Cake... at $6.00 a slice... We took it away to a table and shared it... The Icing was dry and flaking off the Cake, and the actual Cake was as dry as Popcorn... We were in a hurry and didn't complain... So, the following Saturday, we returned to the Cake Lady, thinking things would be better... When the clerk, a Large 40ish year old woman with long brown hair came over, I then told her about the bad Cake from the week before... She got a nasty look on her face reminiscent of the Star Wars character "Jabba the Hut", and denied it was 'old'... So, I ordered another piece... SURPRISE!! This time moist and delicious... and we went back and told her "how good it was"... But now 'the rotund girl' was flushing in the face, and obviously had a "Burr in her Bonnet"... She wasn't receptive to us AT all... Snarky. Anyway...for the last 2 Saturday weekends we have returned to purchase treats all over the Market... Usually we spend a $100.00 with assorted Merchants on Saturdays... This unpleasant woman spots us EVERY time, and proceeds to point us out [across the Market] to the young lady's at her stall... and anybody else who will listen... Snottily smiling away, while obviously stabbing us in the back... We were so appalled by this 'so-called' adults behavior, that we contacted the owner of Cake Lady, "Ingrid" and told her this story... Her reply? "All of her staff were good with Customers, and "don't worry', it will get better"... ??? Anyway... Surprised at your attitude towards paying Customers... Nice Cake when it's fresh, Ingrid... A shame about that rude and nasty woman you have working for you... Maybe you should read your reviews and take them to heart... Particularly "Sarah C... Lena N... N N... Katie E... all great examples of BAD policy... Have a good day... Now a former customer. ***And, for the emotionally over-sensitive out there, the reason I am describing this woman physically, is because I DON'T know her name... there are ALSO lovely young ladies working there, who were - are very pleasant to deal with... The assortment of baked goods looked so beautiful that I just knew I needed to get an after-lunch sweet treat. The stall was pretty busy, too, so that helped instill confidence. My chocolate cookie unfortunately wasn't quite as delicious as it looked. Still good, but the texture was too dry and crunchy - I prefer my cookies moist and chewy. My sample size is just one cookie, so take my review as you may - your mileage may vary. read more

If you're looking for knock your socks off date squares, look no further! I love the cake lady, their date squares are the perfect ratio of date goo and oat crumble and they're huge! Best I ever had!! The macaroons are good too, big and nummy. Cinnamon buns are also delish. They have a lot of treats, but I don't stray outside the date squares often because they're just so good. They have a ton of cookies, carrot cake, strudel and pie...although I haven't tried 'em. I've visited the cake lady booth at least a dozen times at the seaport market and also visited them the past couple years at Christmas at the forum. The Cake Lady was incredibly rude to me and my mother when all we wanted was to get an exchange for our cookie. My mother and I were walking down by the water, and came across this cute little bakery stand. We decided to buy a treat. My mother wasn't hungry, so I decided to just get a chocolate chip cookie for myself. We paid for it and then we were off. As I took a bite however, I realized that it tasted funny. I got my mother to taste it to make sure it wasn't just me, and since she bakes herself, she immediately knew that the problem was too much baking soda. So we decided to take it back. I was planning on just walking up to the stand after the people in front of us, but my mom, (being the nice older lady she is,) didn't want to embarrass the cake lady, so we waited until most of the crowds were gone from the shop. We told her what was wrong with the cookie, and asked for a different one in place of ours. She proceeded to tell us that half the cookie was gone, so she could not take it back. I told her that we had only had two bites, but she still insisted that half was gone. (Even though it wasn't.) After a back and forth that lasted for about 3 minutes, the Cake Lady sassing us all the while, she gave us a replacement. As she was about to put it in the bag though, she looked me straight in the eye, broke the cookie in half, and dropped one half on the counter, only putting one half in the bag. Never before have I experienced such sass and mistreatment from such a small business. I will NOT be buying her treats again. read more

Unfortunately we did not have a great experience with this place at all. We popped in on a Friday, and bought a whole coconut cream pie as we were having a family gathering the following afternoon. We were charged $60 for the pie, which is really a lot. We assume it's because it is sold by the slice, so maybe they're charging you for how ever many slices that is? I'm not sure, but it was a large pie so we took it anyways figuring we could freeze any that was left for a later date. The filling was really good, but the crust was SO thick and was absolutely raw inside. It was extremely pale in colour and gummy in many places where the pastry was thicker. We unfortunately couldn't eat it, and when I called them to ask what we should do they said to bring the pie back in for them to take a look. When the employee looked at the crust, and I showed her all the places it was raw and how the texture was wet and unbaked she told me it was supposed to like that way. I broke off a piece of crust and showed how thick it was and where it was very clearly not baked through, it tasted like raw flour and was not dry, golden, or flakey in any way. She proceeded to show me another coconut pie in the case that was equally underbaked, and said that this is just how they make it and people eat it all the time (which is concerning because you can get sick from uncooked flour). She would not refund me because in her opinion it was fine, and when I said that was unacceptable she called the owner and put me on the phone with her. The owner, who was not there to see the pie, also claimed this was how they always made it and that she could give me $10 back out of the $60 I paid, because "you didn't bring the whole pie back". After some back and forth they did end up refunding me most of my purchase price, but never once apologized or listened to me at all in regards to the dangers of selling people raw pie dough. We will absolutely never go here again, and I only gave two stars instead of one because they did eventually refund me the majority of my money. I wish I had read reviews beforehand because clearly this is not the only issue people have had read more

We loved everything we tried ... shortbread, carrot cake, and cinnamon rolls. Friendly service many choices. Credit cards were accepted.

Last visit wasn't enjoyable at all. Came her with a friend during the tall ship festival and grabbed pecan square and cheese pretzels. The square was tasty however the pretzels were disgusting and awful, they were hard as rock and mold growing all over them. Unfortunately I didn't notice until I'm in my home I felt angry that I wasted my money and they should be ashamed of themselves for actually selling such a thing to customers. No love for The Cake Lady, Yelpers? I've only ever had good experiences from this farmers market stall. The "uniforms" are pretty cringey, but so far as the food, everything I've tried from here is delicious! I absolutely love their pretzels - they're giant, have sea salt sprinkled over the tops and are everything I want from a pretzel, honestly. They also have delicious cookies, strudel and pies. I love picking up gingerbread from here during the winter. I've never really paid attention to the service, honestly - because the market is always so busy I try to get in and out as fast as can. The few experiences I've had with them have been pretty frustrating. The food isn't terrible by any means but definitely not great, stuff tends to taste old. I remember I got super excited when I saw the pretzels but was really disappointed at how dry it was, and I figured it was just a bad one but then I tried another pretzel from them later on and it was still super dry and bland. Also, the second time I went there was at Scotia Square and the lady working there just kinda took my Debit Card out of my hand after I had asked for a pretzel and walked over to the machine, did the transaction without me, and came back over with no receipt. I had to ask for the receipt to prove she didn't just charge me more than I thought I was getting charged. I luckily got charged the right amount, but it was still pretty terrible customer service and just not okay in general. Overall their food is meh and the service is terrible. The German chocolate cake was good however what I didn't appreciate was her mediocre customer service, no hello no thank you, as her employee was cutting the slice she was directing her on how big the slice should be. I think it's important for quality control however pre train before the market opens especially when the slice was small for $6 I won't be going back! read more

I met the "Cake Lady" at Alderney market & she agreed to make a low sugar cake for my diabetic mothers 70th birthday. She was pleasant, I paid & we agreed upon picking it up on the Halifax waterfront the following week. She recommended that I contact her the night before to remind her of the order which I did & we agreed to meet the next day. Day of I got a call asking that come as late as possible for pick up, which later turned into a request to meet her at exit 6 (30 min drive out of the city) Luckily I was going that way so I agreed. On the way she called again asking I come to a specific address which when put in my GPS was far from the original pick up point. Needless to say there was no birthday cake for my Moms 70th & I had to cobble something together last min. Multiple attempts have been made to contact Ingrid requesting a refund with no response. I went to the market Saturday at Seaport and ended up getting a slice of the carrot cake. Not good! It was fresh and the frosting was great but the cake itself had a weird soggy consistency and zero flavor. Usually in a carrot cake you can taste the spices (cinnamon, etc.) but in this cake...nothing! I ate the frosting and threw away the rest. For $6 a slice you can find better. read more

I purchased an Apple pie from their stall at the Halifax Farmers Market during Thanksgiving. It is by far the WORST apple pie I have ever eaten and will ever eat in my life. The crust was very subpar and flavorless but what made it completely disgusting was the filling. There were raisins in it. I have NEVER seen or heard of raisins in apple pie before. The apples themselves were cut thin and still a bit crunchy, not the texture you want in apple pie. The overall taste of the filling was gross. The pie was seriously inedible. My one year old cousin who will eat anything even spit it out. Since they put raisins in their apple pie I feel there should be a warning as many people do not like them. read more

Everything I have had here is dry, bland and overpriced. The service is also borderline rude. I bought my son a $4 sugar cookie here once and as he was reaching to select a (wrapped) cookie he was barked at with a "Don't touch!". WTF lady? You're selling COOKIES and they were wrapped, it's not like if he brushed another cookie it would be contaminated. Plus we had PAID for one. Wow, the Cake Lady has the best Key Lime pie? Who knew. After recently visiting Key West and other places in Florida and sampling many key lime pies - it is funny that by far the best key lime pie we find is in the Halifax Market. The cake Lady supplied us, and we enjoyed it. read more

Just what I love to see at a Farmers Market! Fresh homemade pastries with a local flare. Very amenable young woman behind the counter. I was visiting Halifax waterfront last week and I got a very bad customer service there. I was very upset and mad. I got a pretzel from the cake lady by the waterfront because it said that the pretzel was freshly made and I'd like to try it out. Unfortunately, the lady who was working there was very rude to me, she was rolling her eyes when I paying for the pretzel. She had no patience with me at all. When I had a bite of the pretzel, the pretzel was very dry and stale, I wasn't happy with my food, so I went back to talk to the lady and she was telling me that the pretzel was JUST made one day before, and I was shocked that she said that, I requested to have my money back or do an exchange. She took my pretzel and squish it so many times and yelling at me that the pretzel was perfectly fine and soft. She told me that the pretzel was soft and not gonna return my money back to me or do an exchange of other food. She told me that if she did an exchange and she has to pay for the pretzel. And then she talked to other lady who also worked there with her, she came to me and told me that the pretzel was made in the morning, and it was super fresh, they lied to me and other customers. And she tried to threaten me and saying that they never exchanged their food, same as other restaurants and shops, such as Tims. And she was telling me that she was very experienced and professional about her jobs and her customer service. I was very simple and I just want my money back, or had an exchange because I really didn't enjoy my food. During the conversation, there were two white guys and they wanna buy some cakes, the guys was standing there listening our conversation, the two ladies' attitudes changed instantly, their voices changed and they allowed me to have an exchange for something else. At the end, I got a small piece of carrot cake from the corner of the whole carrot cake. They gave me a look when I was leaving. I had a terrible experience at the waterfront. read more

It is my favourite places for baked goodies in Halifax. it is the place I go to when I have the need to indulge myself. The desserts are good-looking and tasty. I make a point of trying different thing every time. I tried the pecan square, scones, cinnamon rolls and apple strudel and they are all so good. The cinnamon pretzel is amazing. The cheese pretzel and the chocolate chip cookies is my daughters favourite treats from the Cake Lady. Keep up the good work! read more

I purchased a shortbread cookie from a friendly worker last Friday..."That's $4.00 please",she said.."is that ok?"....I'm thinking "pricey" but it looked good....it was bland tasting...dry to the taste and didn't melt in my mouth like other shortbread does...I should have only had the one bite,,,now I'm out 4 bucks for a lousy cookie,,,It was the second chance I gave the place...last year I bought a bland tasting slice of strawberry shortcake...overpriced in my view for what it is.....the Royal Family association?
