Saturday noon the bar was nearly deserted; the woman who was taking care of the bar and store said the place will get busy after 3 pm. Then there is a live band. The hamburger was excellent with the bun barely holding a think round of meat, tomato, onion, cheese, pickle and lettuce. The store-made potato salad is vey good with onions, cucumber, etc. The server was friendly and said the store and bar dates back to the gold rush days when huge dredges worked Scott River. The Callahan emporium came with all the hype but failed to live up. I decided to stop by this famous place and wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. The burger only came with itself and nothing else, and it seemed overpriced for amount of food you get. The burger was an average burger, tasty but nothing to write home about. Server was friendly and relatively attentive, but she was the only one working. The place was completely empty at lunch time so the vibe in the restaurant was somewhat dead. I'm a hiker and backpacker and big fan of the Trinity Alps Wilderness. When we come out of the trees, lakes and granite we gravitate to real food and cold beer. The Emporium delivers that and more from its perch in an historic building at this wide spot in the road. Outside, this wonderful joint keeps its dress a bit shabby and idiosyncratic with the few other buildings in this wide spot in the road. Don't let that fool you! It's part of the draw for me. Inside, the wide selection of beer is cold, the sandwiches fresh and tasty and atmosphere literally warm with wood stove you can sit around. One of the owners was the chief cook, barkeep and local historian during our stop after a hike in the Alps. You can spend lots of time looking at the oddities and antiques that inhabit the place. Or sign and tack up a dollar bill as proof of life in Callahan!!! Good food, a great selection of beers and casual and comfortable, down-home conversation makes this stop now a must for me. read more

Happened by this place and stopped in for a couple of burgers. The burger itself, service, and unique atmosphere were all excellent. Side salad was good. Side potato salad wasn't so good. Price was $45 for two burgers each with one side...and two beers. So a bit steep, but I wasn't complaining because the burger was so good. I'll definitely go back when I'm in the area again. read more

The Callahan Emporium isn't what you would call a dive bar...but some do. It's a bar that's been around for a hell of a long time and if the walls could talk you'd probably enjoy most of its stories. You can get a drink, have a bite to eat or do a little shopping at the emporium as does it's name imply. Kinda a old cowboy type saloon, grandmas panty, collection decor from stuff found or simply left behind. The stuffed bear shows clues of nights that surely went too far and the working vintage icebox makes me smile. We had a couple cold beers and a pleasant conversation with the barkeep. This place is way out, out of the way in the middle of God's country. If you ever find yourself out there, for God's sake stop. Friendly, fun, different. read more

Rode by Cecilville saloon and found it was closed so the closest place to eat lunch is Callahan emporium which is 30 miles away. Arrived at ~230pm and there was only one customer at the bar. We were greeted properly and ordered sandwiches. Amazingly the sandwiches were made fresh and had good flavors. This is a good place to stop when you are doing the 100-mile Etna-Fork of Salmon-Callahan bike loop which is amazing itself. read more

A nice local tavern where you can sit down and have a beer and an excellent sandwich. No evidence of those weird pickled eggs. The party bear may have eaten them. And you get a good conversation. Callahan is a destination choice if you want to see beautiful Scott Valley. The town is located on the road taking you into the Trinity Alps. There is also camping in the vicinity. read more

I really liked their sandwiches. I ate a BLT at the Emporium and got a chicken/avocado to go. The potato salad was pretty good too. Friendly lady working there and other snack foods available. Definitely a good stop if you are biking or driving through. The bar has a real old west feel to it and is worth stopping for a beer as well on a hot summer afternoon. There just are not many places left in the US like this - a slice of real 60's Americana that you can experience today. If you are traveling on I5 and have time for a detour, give them a call to make sure they are open and take a beautifully scenic drive and check this place out. They are 45 - 60 minutes off the freeway in the kind of place most people cannot even imagine. This is the real deal folks and not some fixed-up touristy place. The people working here and the local patrons you see are not in costumes or faking it for tourists. They live here, eat here, get their groceries here, and hang out to talk about the weather and if this will be a good hay season. It is hared to believe a place like this still exists so check it before it doesn't. read more

This place is amazing. The people are nice/welcoming and food is organic/healthy. Anytime I drive through, I stop there.

Loved this place! The new ownership is already making a name for themselves. The sandwiches are top quality and they have a large beer selection. We had several intriguing conversations going on and got some good directions to some local sights. Although Callahan is quite a ways off the beaten track, it's hard to imagine never stopping there again! Visited on August 4, 2016. read more
