Hanging out at The Callahan Emporium bar.

I'm a hiker and backpacker and big fan of the Trinity Alps Wilderness. When we come out of the trees, lakes and granite we gravitate to real food and cold beer. The Emporium delivers that and more from its perch in an historic building at this wide spot in the road. Outside, this wonderful joint keeps its dress a bit shabby and idiosyncratic with the few other buildings in this wide spot in the road. Don't let that fool you! It's part of the draw for me. Inside, the wide selection of beer is cold, the sandwiches fresh and tasty and atmosphere literally warm with wood stove you can sit around. One of the owners was the chief cook, barkeep and local historian during our stop after a hike in the Alps. You can spend lots of time looking at the oddities and antiques that inhabit the place. Or sign and tack up a dollar bill as proof of life in Callahan!!! Good food, a great selection of beers and casual and comfortable, down-home conversation makes this stop now a must for me.

The Callahan Emporium isn't what you would call a dive bar...but some do. It's a bar that's been around for a hell of a long time and if the walls could talk you'd probably enjoy most of its stories. You can get a drink, have a bite to eat or do a little shopping at the emporium as does it's name imply. Kinda a old cowboy type saloon, grandmas panty, collection decor from stuff found or simply left behind. The stuffed bear shows clues of nights that surely went too far and the working vintage icebox makes me smile. We had a couple cold beers and a pleasant conversation with the barkeep. This place is way out, out of the way in the middle of God's country. If you ever find yourself out there, for God's sake stop. Friendly, fun, different.

Amazing Ribeye and service in the heart of the old west. Highly recommend. I had the best local steak I've had in years. It was grilled over freshly chopped would from local cattle.

My favorite place to hang out. Lou and Fran are fun people to be around, sandwiches are good and the beer is cold.

We were driving thru town, looking for a deli sandwich. Any place we could get a good sandwich quickly, to get back on the road quickly, that wasn't yet another fast food place. I had a simple turkey and cheese on white. I can't describe quite why it was so good. Maybe it was just very, very fresh, and prepared exactly how I ordered it. No one overthought it or gentrified it or anything like that. They did the thing they do, and they did that thing well. My wife had a roast beef sandwich and it was the same story. Not sure why it was as good as it was, except that it was fresh and didn't have a bunch of extra toppings or "accoutrement" she didn't want. Even though this is clearly a very local establishment, they were friendly to us, and the bathroom was clean. We ended up buying some other supplies from the convenience store section, saving a stop. Plenty of parking on the side of the store and fairly easy to get back to the highway. Definitely worth a stop for provisions.

Worth the drive! Cute little corner market with a tiny cubby hole deli. Staff is friendly. I had a…read morepastrami sandwich and it was the best!!! Can't even get pastrami at the chain sub shops these days. It was freshly made to order with my selection of toppings. Reasonable price, too. I'll definitely be back.
