We were hoping for something more…read more The place was easy to find and had a lot of parking for it being on that part of the island. They have a banner on the outside of the building that gave a good photo backdrop to match the pirate themed room. We booked a 12:45 "Lost Treasure of Topsail" room and got there a little early to use the bathrooms before we started. The bathroom was nice and clean, and the employee was very friendly. We were told we had to lock our phones up in the lobby area so it did not interfere with the technology in the room, but then they gave us an iPad to use in it. The iPad was used to unlock the room and start the clock, but that was about the extent of the technology that was used in the room. Without giving away any clues, I'll just say we were not impressed with any of the puzzles, it felt as if all but one puzzle was controlled by the host and not by actually triggering an opening. We've done a ton of escape rooms over the years, and while this gave us something to do to escape the hottest part of the day, I don't see us doing the "Lost Treasure of Topsail" room again. Hopefully the other room and the outside escape are better and something we could try later on.

It is the oldest of the three houses. The house is not handicap accessible. It was built in 1770 in the Colonial Era on what once was a jail. It had ballast stone walls. Outside you can see the jail cells. The house is Georgian architecture. The house is furnished with items from the 18th and 19th century. The house was somewhere Burgwin did business and tried to impress those he entertained. The house shows how they lived in pre-revolutionary times. The paint colors were restored to what they were in 1770. Outside in another building is the kitchen with a hearth which was the jailer's quarters. I recommend taking a tour of the Burwin-Wright House if you are interested in history or architecture.

Beautiful venue! We had our wedding ceremony at The Atrium. The staff went above and beyond for us…read more It poured on our wedding day. Poured. Hours before the ceremony I received a call from the staff offering to set up chairs under the covered section of the venue in case the rain didn't let up. Not only did they set up the chairs for us, in the hours leading up to the guests arriving they were sweeping, squeegeeing, and air blowing rain water into the drains to keep the area dry for guests. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating. We didn't get to use the traditional aisle and benches but it was still just as beautiful and perfect as I imagined. I could not be happier and guests have continually been commenting on how beautiful and unique the space was.

Great venue that becomes what you want of it…read more I went here for a wedding. It's a big L shape with a large hall leading to a central courtyard. The courtyard attaches to some interior space. The space has lots of trees and landscaping inside to bring nature into the space. The attached interior space has some bathrooms that were clean and worked well. It's got an urban rustic feel. Lots of exposed brick with greenery growing up into it. It kind of reminded me of where Ross and Emily got married in Friends with the open ceiling space. Fortunately the weather cooperated and there wasn't sun beating down on the guests. The long hall and open ceiling made for some nice breezes. We ended up eating along long tables in the large hall which made use of the long dimensions. We didn't need a separate dance floor as the courtyard served as that. The staff was very nice and attentive. Not sure if they were from the venue or caterer, but they did a great job. We lucked out and the weather was beautiful. There was only one airplane that flew overhead and not during the ceremony. It was pretty loud when it flew over during the rehearsal, but the ceremony went great. It's very centrally located to downtown, right off Market and 2nd. Parking is available across the street.

They changed the parking to the next street and you aren't to enter at the flags like the ticket directions told you. I took a guided tour and learned about the Foy family that had a peanut and sweet potato farm. But the more important part of the story was about the Gullah Geechee people. I had first learned about them when I was in Beaufort SC. But there is a corridor that goes from Wilmington to St. Augustine, FL to protect the Gullah Geechee culture. Poplar Grove was built by the Gullah slaves who were very skilled. 59 lived on the property. They took care of the construction; lumber milling; brick making; tending to the livestock and crops as well as domestic chores. They need to be the focus of the tour.

Of course, this wasn't enough of a reason to knock a star off but it's worth noting. So so pretty. We had such a great time.

Family got married here a few months ago, and while I'm sure it seemed great for the wedding party,…read morethe venue was awful for guests. The space simply cannot accommodate the number of people advertised. The indoor area is not insulated for sound and is deafening when you get more than a couple dozen people inside. Those seated upstairs for dinner weren't served until over a half hour after everyone downstairs. Guests weren't permitted to use the on-site bathroom until after the ceremony was over (while filing in beforehand)! Neither the indoor nor the outdoor space is ADA compliant. The venue had to be talked into providing guests with water while waiting in the outdoor space in 100 degree heat. It was a truly awful experience, and I wouldn't recommend this venue to anyone.
