A group of us stopped in for coffee today. The staff/volunteers at so friendly. The place is super clean and very cozy and artsy. There's lots to look at art wise and items being sold (jewelry, crocheting etc). All of us had brewed coffee and it was great. They have many different options and plant based creams. There was also some live music this morning. That was a nice touch. We sat outside on the patio as it was a gorgeous day. They have a food and goodie display. I was very excited to bring a group to this community space. I called two weeks in advance to book for ten people but was a bit disappointed. I took an art group there as I am the facilitator. When we got there, I told them I was there for a booking. They didn't seem to know about it so we moved our own tables which was fine. My participants are mostly on AISH or with other financial assistance so some of them got their drinks but I paid for most. I found their prices not as affordable and thought it would be more affordable because I heard they are community-driven. Towards the end of our visit, I took out a bag with table easels to gift to my participants when a staff rudely asked if I was doing a workshop, I had to ask them to repeat themselves because I wasn't sure what she was asking and made me feel like I was doing something wrong. Overall I don't think our experience was too positive. I might go back there but not with my group as I don't think it was too inclusive overall. read more

Volunteers are really trying their best here. So I give them the 3 stars for friendliness, atmosphere and clean, no gender specific bathrooms (look for the soup ladle to get the bathroom key labelled left or right). I like that they really support the community and host multiple events in a months span. When we walked in, they were hosting more than half of their space as part of the Alberta Ave craft sale going on last weekend at multiple locations. They were also offering a discount on drinks for those that had attended the pottery sale. Downside to their random event hosting, is that you never know what kind of space you're walking into. So unless you are great at knowing what's going on in the neighbourhood, best to try and check out what's happening before you're going if you're planning on having a good conversation there. This also translates seating space available. We got lucky on Saturday afternoon and had a table for 4 but lots of people were squishing in the smaller seating space provided and definitely less comfortably than us. We were well tucked in by the area for napkins, lids, water, etc. so we spent a lot of time shuffling to accommodate others access. This place might not have the best coffee around Edmonton but the London fog tea is always spot on for me. Desserts are hit and miss here. The scone I had this weekend looked fresh but it was dry (thank goodness I had tea to resolve that issue). In the past, I've had good scones, so I guess it depends on the day? Sandwiches and soup are usually pretty standard here and why we stopped as my friend was volunteering down at the pottery sale and hadn't had lunch yet. The short and long, if you're flexible with the environment you're having coffee or tea, then you'll be fine. read more

Really great place with an amazing philosophy. Local people (volunteers), local music, local art to create community. A little crowded sometimes. But it is so nice to go in for a latte or tea and support something wonderful Local art and jewerely are displayed for purchase. We were there to support our friend who was doing a live music gig. Fairly limited menu...soup, sandwiches, and treats. We chose tea and puff wheat squares, they were delicious and affordable. Love all the community events they host (coffee with cops, board game night, open mike etc etc.) A really good place to feel like you are a part of a community. read more

The carrot is a warm and cozy volunteer-powered, not-for-profit coffeehouse. They have local artist aft and crafts for sell and will often have live music. Their coffee is fair trade and good tasting. They have milk alternatives and vegan cookies!!! The staff here are always cheery and helpful. They also sell things such as croissant's, muffins, quiche, sandwiches, squares and unique drinks such as twilight fog London fog and apple cider. The Carrot is a community arthouse/music venue/coffee shop on Alberta Ave. They are volunteer run and sell the standard coffee shop type of fare, as well as some lunch items. They have a stage and open mics on Saturday and Thursdays. When I came in this afternoon, there was a performer singing, and a lady was painting. The Carrot also has some local artists wares for sale some jewellery, pottery, cards, even soap. I ordered a ginger spice cider, which tasted like apple cider - I wish there were a little more ginger zip to it. I also got a slice of lemon poppy seed cake which was pretty good. It was $5.50 for the drink and cake, which is pretty reasonable. The food and drink are good, but these things are secondary to what's going on inside. Music, art, conversation - there's a great, artistic vibe going on here. Apparently, there is WiFi here, but I didn't try it out because I didn't have my iPod with me. Still, that's probably for the best. The Carrot is more of a place where you'd open a notebook and write something creative, rather than open your laptop and finish that business report. It is nice to know The Carrot is supporting the arts as well as being a good local establishment. read more

I got one of my best friends from The Carrot. What other business can give you a pal as well as a cup of joe? About two years ago, my kids were students at Elite two blocks away, so my wife stopped in at The Carrot for a couple of (very good) cappucino and a (delicious) for the little ones. She got to talking with another young couple who had a daughter, and by that time next week we were brunch buddies and when they moved to Ottawa earlier this year, she got them both jobs in her sister's workplace. And that's the sort of thing that The Carrot offers. It's not just good coffee or tasty snacks or comfortable seating or a good ambience... it's community. And you can't put a price on that. Now I'm not on 118 very often these days, but when I am I will always stop at The Carrot. You never know who you're going to meet. read more

I was in the area and needed a spot to warm up and do a bit of work. Basically, I needed tea and wifi. From outside, the coffee shop looks small but actually inside there is a lot of space, plenty of seats, tables... and people! It was quite busy for a Tuesday morning! I got the impression a few local clubs meet here which is nice. Everyone (staff and customers) were helpful and chatty. I only bought one cup of tea but the server came round and gave me a second cup for free! Very kind. Priding themselves in their connection with local arts, they host a lot of live music events and open mic nights. And, the artwork displayed is promoting local artists - it's also available to buy. It really does seem to be at the hub of the local community. I'm happy to support it :) read more

When walking in for the very first time, 9 week old puppy in my arms to buy a coffee and continue on my walk, I wasn't even greeted with a hello... Just a "you have to get out with that" pointing at the puppy. I understand that animals should not be in a restaurant where food is prepared, but carrying a puppy in to buy a coffee and continue on our walk is hardly a crime and would NOT be a health code violation either. The rudeness alone was shocking and made me question what kind of "community" venture this place really was. There was no sense of "community" to be found at the Carrot. Sadly I can't leave a review about how great the coffee or muffins were because I was told to get out. Oh well, Starbucks is happy to let me in with my puppy in my arms to buy a coffee and continue on our walk. I guess that's where I will have to spend my money from now on. I love coming here. I can grab an inexpensive coffee or tea and sit and knit. It's my home away from home in a way. They have wi-fi so I can browse the internet. I love the Friday night entertainment night of local city wide talent. There is always something happening, so it can be loud at times. I always feel welcomed even if it's been a while since I have been there. read more

This place gets 5 stars. Coffee and treats are excellent but the environment is what really makes it a keeper. They have an assortment of couches and large chairs to curl up on. Most coffee shops today are opting for the hard, wood furniture that doesn't make for a lengthy comfortable stay. Total fan of their coffee, their music nights, the fact that they pride themselves in almost every aspect of their business. Having toys for kids works great for us too, as do the couches they have. The staff is friendly. I appreciate the art they display and sell. My only complaint is that their food is certainly not as good as their coffee although their Montreal Steak Meat sandwich are quite good. They are closed on Mondays and parts of the afternoon on certain days so it's good to check their hours before heading there. I go there to work sometimes and they have 3 plug-ins that I know of. Their wifi has always been super reliable. The service is most excellent. There is a diversity of staff that serve you and I have never been disappointed with their level of service. Most certainly 5 stars when it comes to their service and atmosphere. read more

Because this place is run by volunteers, the service obtained can be really uneven. The first time I visited I got really attentive good service. The more recent time I visit I was essentially ignored as the volunteer played the piano before trying to answer my questions and not really understanding what the place had for food/drink. It was a bit odd. That said this place is a great little cafe in the community and includes a decent drink menu with some food options. There is a piano and a lot of different seating options. There are even toys etc. for kids, and free wifi. A nice place to sit and work if that's what you want, or to meet friends or otherwise have a good experience in the area. read more

I adore The Carrot, and their amazing nanaimo bars! The staff are volunteers and so friendly and fun. The seating is ecclectic but comfortable, and more often than not the art is amazing, as are the gorgeous crafts for sale. I have yet to have anything more substantial to eat than a dessert square there, but I've smelled and seen the sandwiches toasting and definitely intend to indulge myself. Great time to try it is a Saturday night for cozy, community entertainment at their open mic. 118th avenue is so blessed to have this place. read more

The Carrot has terrible fluorescent lighting, and its hours are a bit tricky, but it's a tremendous asset to the Alberta Avenue neighbourhood. All staffers are volunteers, and as such, service can be inconsistent. But the Carrot is super-chill hangout spot, serves delicious intelligentsia coffee (just like Credo), and the baristas, while volunteers, know how to make great lattes. read more

I love you because in the 118th ghetto, well it's a ghetto. I went to a local song writers show on a Friday and have hung out there waiting for my friend to be home a few times. Food is OK, books that are there to borrow and read are good, local arts and crafts for sale are brilliant! And I can buy soap!
