I first called your clinic on 5/22/25, desperate to get my Sphynx cat seen due to some concerning facial spasms. I made it clear to your receptionist that I was searching for a compassionate, trustworthy veterinarian to form a long-term relationship with, for all three of my cats. I wasn't just looking for a quick appointment; I was looking for a partner in my cats' health for life. When your receptionist said you could squeeze Wicca in same-day and highly recommended Dr. Beiting based on my needs, I was beyond relieved. That relief didn't last long. Red flag #1: I walked in to find adorable cats roaming freely in the waiting room. While charming in theory, this setup is completely impractical and inconsiderate. Strange cats approaching a cat in a carrier? No thank you. My cat was visibly stressed, and most cats would be, especially sick or nervous ones, trapped in a carrier, being approached by unfamiliar animals. It's not just an emotional risk, it's a health risk, too. In what world is free-roaming animals a sound practice in a vet's office, where illnesses could easily spread? Red flag #2: Once we were in the exam room, the vet tech immediately tried to hold Wicca without any need or invitation. Let me repeat, I have a Sphynx cat, and yes, I get that people are fascinated by her. But fascination does not give you permission to violate her boundaries, especially when she's clearly growling and hissing at you. When I asked to hold her myself because she was obviously uncomfortable, the vet tech almost refused to give her back. Her response? "I'm not scared of her." Excuse me? This isn't about your fear, it's about respecting an animal who is clearly showing you she doesn't want to be touched. I had to physically take my cat back to avoid further distress. Then came the vet, Dr. Beiting, who admitted she didn't know what was going on. She speculated it might be focal seizures, but wasn't convinced. I'm not upset she didn't have an immediate answer, medicine is complicated, but here's where things really fell apart. She said we'd do bloodwork, monitor over the weekend, and touch base Tuesday. If Wicca was still having spasms, we'd try Gabapentin. Tuesday comes and... nothing. No call from the doctor. I leave a message. Eventually, I get a call back from the receptionist, who breezily tells me on my voicemail that Wicca's blood work looks fine except for the part where she has a heart condition, and I should "probably call a cardiologist." That's it. That's the call. No details. No explanation. Just a casual suggestion that my cat might have a serious heart problem. Frankly, I was left in tears. That's not just unprofessional, it's inhumane. A receptionist should never be the one to break news like that, and with such a flippant tone? I work in animal care. I would never let an unqualified person call a client with upsetting or unclear medical results. The doctor promised to speak to me personally on Tuesday. Instead, I had to call again, beg to speak with the doctor, only to be told she was "busy" and might not get back to me that day. Luckily, because I work with vets, I was able to get Gabapentin elsewhere and review the emailed blood results with people I trust. If I didn't work in the field? I would be freaking out. Wicca was still having spasms on Tuesday, and I had no guidance from the person I paid to provide it. The doctor didn't call me back until Thursday, two full days later. I couldn't answer during work, and her voicemail said if I didn't call back right away, she wouldn't get back to me until tomorrow. I called back and left a voicemail at 2:45 PM which was 15 minutes after she called me. Again, no response. Honestly? I wasn't surprised. This was now a pattern. And let's not forget, I had to ask four separate times just to get a receipt, rabies certificate, and doctor's notes. So let's tally this up: I paid nearly $400 for a "we don't know," a traumatic experience for my cat, a rabies vaccine, bloodwork, and days of stress and unanswered calls and voicemails. I had to do my own legwork just to understand what was wrong. I had to educate the doctor about the Sphynx breed. I had to be the one leading the appointment, not the other way around. There was no compassion, no proactive care, and no follow-through. This entire experience was infuriating and heartbreaking. I came in ready to start a lifelong relationship with a veterinary team I could trust. Instead, I left feeling disrespected, disregarded, and deeply disappointed. My cat was rapidly losing weight but still eating. The Cat Doctor vet didn't do blood work & said "keep an eye on her" sending her home without giving me clear information. Dr. Beiting is a wonderful vet. If she were at a different practice I would definitely return to her. However, The Cat Dr. only has appointments a week or more in advance. If my cat is sick, or dying (like my 18 year old blind Siamese was), they could not fit him in. I had to take him to an emergency vet where he had never been before with people he didn't know so he could be peacefully put down. My cat had kidney disease and had taken a turn for the worse and stopped eating. I called several times to try to get an appointment so he could be put down in a place he knew with people he knew. I could only get an appointment a full week away. What good is a vet's office that only sees healthy animals?? I will be taking my other 2 cats elsewhere. read more

The doctors were pretty nice, Dr. Beiting is very calm and has a nice vibe but the receptionist is very rude. Super dismissive and condescending. The doctors seem good so I would've went back, but the customer service is so terrible that I won't- especially when I'm already very worried about my pet. For the expensive prices, it's not worth it. Save your money and go to a place with a better front desk. Lots of other places in the city with good doctors too but a kinder receptionist and better prices. read more

We paid nearly triple the average rate for our young healthy cat to be spayed here and for a year after she continued to go into heat. We brought her in for multiple appointments with video evidence and they refused to be helpful or understanding about the situation. Feeling like we were crazy and seeing our cat was in pain we finally decided to get a second opinion. Our new vet gave our kitty an inexpensive test, found a sizable amount of ovarian tissue left behind, and had her back in surgery in less than a week. They even gave us the surgery for completely free to make up for the Cat Doctor's mistake. When I told them what we paid for her original and ineffective spay their jaws dropped. We are young pet owners and felt that our love for our cat was taken advantage of to up-charge us on everything from basic visits to tests and surgery. Reading other peoples' reviews it's clear I'm not alone in this sentiment. I'd recommend going somewhere a few blocks further that will put your cat's health first! I took in a stray and brought him here to get checked out. $400 of unnecessary tests later, they gave him back saying he was fine and that there was nothing to be treated. I thought it was strange that he didn't have worms or flees having come from the street. And I turned out to be right. He had worms and flees. I complained and asked for a prescription to get dewormer on Chewy - instead they had me pick it up, charging me $30 for an item that was $10 on Chewy. This practice has deteriorated into taking advantage of your emotional attachment to your pet to upsell you on unnecessary tests instead of treating the actual basic problems. read more

I'm low income so for her entire life I took my cat to PAWS wellness center in Gray's Ferry section of Philadelphia because they are low cost. PAWS is great but it can take a week or two to get an appointment. My 15 year old kitty was diagnosed with lymphoma and had weeks to live The Cat Doctor understood I needed a Vet I could take my sweetie on short notice when it was time to euthanize her. Everyone was so compassionate and understanding to my situation. Had several talks on phone with staff and when it was time they accommodated my request for an appointment right away. Vet examined her, took an ultrasound gave me her ailments and let me make the decision to euthanize. (she could have hung on a few weeks more but was starting to feel effects of her cancer). They were all so sympathetic as I stayed with my cat until the end. All told price was 257 dollars. This is an acceptable practice, but they are are now run by a Corporation. The vets are perfectly capable and caring, but they are hamstrung by the Corporate beurocracy that owns the practice. We had been at this practice for almost 20 years, but the practice was recently sold to "Big Med". They literally held up my cat's medical care for "company procedure" matters. The problems with getting my cat's prescriptions were caused by their own inability to manage accurate and timely communication about her doses with their own on-line prescription distribution. My cat was the victim of the corporate system. After this frustrating experience, we left the Cat Doctor to find Dr. Andeer's new practice. Dr. Megan Andeer, a renowned cat expert, used to be at the Cat Doctor, but she moved about 2 years ago -after the practice was sold to the new corporation - and she set up her own practice. If you want the most compassionate and common sense care for your feline friends, and are able to travel to South Philly, go to Dr. Andeer's City Cat Vets. Doctor tells me she may have a urine infection so then she performs all these tests and shots. $620 later, nothing is wrong shes perfect! Go figure ! Ok I chalked that up and sent her today with my fiance for a rabies shot and the basic exam so she can go to the groomers. I was sure this time to specify on the phone exactly all I wanted and asked the price. They tell me $90, ok fine. Come out today with a $180 bill !!! Why ?? I asked for two services and they perform 4!! a parasite test a fecal test. My fiance assumed this was all apart of the basic exam no prices disclosed beforehand or nothing. Shen never said it was extra services!! ... I am not rich and I feel taken advantage of. Tell them what you want and do not let them recommend or talk you into all this other nonsense if thats not what you asked for. The office had 3 cats wandering around. A little pricy. I paid $230 for a routine checkup and full blood work. The checkup was only $60-70... but the blood work was costly. I'm so sorry that I have to change my opinion of The Cat Doctor. I took my cat to Dr. Jessica Beiting on 5/25/17 for his yearly shots, at that time I was told he had Mild to Moderate tartar so I scheduled a dental cleaning for 8/3/17. By the way he is only6 years old. I took a very healthy cat in that day 9:00am and my nightmare started. When I signed the consent form I wrote on it NOT TO PULL ANY TEETH UNLESS YOU CALL ME FIRST. I received a call from the vet around 1:00pm saying that everything went well and then she said she pulled 2 teeth, she was sorry that she did not see the consent form until she was done. I picked him up around 4:00pm and the poor think could not even walk because he was so drugged up and stayed that way for the next three days. He had diarrhea so bad over the next 4 days, the cost was ($567.89). When I called the office on Monday morning I was told my vet was to busy to see him but I could go to another one, my reply was since my vet knows him I would like him to see her and I was told she has a opening on Friday, however if I came over they would've something for me to shop the diarrhea, So off I go to get this medicine, this was $53.10. When I got home I looked up the name I what I got from the vet, and I find out it's sold over the counter for $21.00. That night he was getting worse so I took him to Penn veterinary hospital, He was dehydraed and was drooling for the mouth, so they had to give him fluids and an injection for nausea I also received and antibiotic to give him two time a day.($250.00) So, as you can tell I'm not real happy with my vet. Just in the building I live in there are now 6 cats that will not be returning to this practice. I'm sad but I now feel that it was all about the money at this place and that is so sad. read more

I was pleased with the office and the staff's manner with my cat. He's a little older, 9 or 10 years, and when he was having some bladder issues, I didn't want to take him to a budget vet and risk upsetting him too much. He can be moody for days if he's handled the wrong way or stressed. The Cat Doctor's office and waiting area were calm and clean, and the doctor herself was very professional. Yes we paid $$$ for bloodwork and literally nothing was wrong with him we just needed to get an extra litter box and throw out a rug he was attached to, but our cat is a member of our family and old, so we didn't mind spending the money on lab work. For the years we have had him and he's been healthy, and to know he's not sick in any way, a few hundred bucks now was not a big deal. Our younger cat is a jerk and really social, loves everything, so he doesn't go to this nice cushy vet yet. For now he gets cheap vet care at Paws. He can handle that. Dr. Eigner at the Cat Doctor misdiagnosed an eye infection in my cat, Bosco. I paid her $300 and she prescribed three different eye medications, but the next day Bosco's eye looked worse. I called the office, and the receptionist told me to email Dr. Eigner pictures of his eye, which I did, and her reply only suggested that I bring Bosco to a specialist at another exorbitant cost if I was really concerned. The eye looked better for the next couple days, so I diligently continued with Dr. Eigner's medication regimen instead, but a few days later it began looking worse again, so I brought Bosco back to the Cat Doctor. Dr. Eigner did not know what was going on, and a veterinary ophthalmologist agreed to come in and look at Bosco's eye, so I left him there for the afternoon. When Dr. Eigner called me later that day, she told me in her own words that the ophthalmologist had said she should have initially given Bosco an antibiotic, and now it was too late for his vision and the eye needed to be removed. I asked Dr. Eigner if the surgery would be close to a grand, and she replied, "Oh no, I don't think it's that much," so I agreed to the surgery without knowing the exact cost. Bosco could stay at the Cat Doctor while he awaited surgery the following Monday. I later found out from the front desk that Dr. Eigner's estimate for the eye removal would be upwards of $1100 (which I don't have), and she would not operate on Bosco for a penny less, even though her own error led to the situation. I called the rescue group in northern NJ where i had adopted Bosco, and their vet will do it for $150 but can't until next week. I told Dr. Eigner that another vet would be performing the surgery, but that I couldn't get an appointment for several days, so I asked for them to at least hold Bosco and manage his pain in the meantime, since they provide boarding services anyway. In response, Dr. Eigner insisted I pick up Bosco right away, even though I don't have a sterile environment, or painkillers to give him, or medical knowledge about what to do if his infection spreads, while he awaits surgery with the affordable vet. Dr. Eigner became irate when I suggested she had made the wrong call by not giving Bosco an antibiotic and that the least she could do was board my cat and keep him comfortable until I can bring him into surgery next week. She yelled at me that she "doesn't care about my cat," and that if I didn't pick him up that night, she would "dump the cat at my doorstep" on a night that fell below 30 degrees. Meanwhile, poor Bosco is in excruciating pain and has his eye rotting out of his head while he waits this long for surgery, because the Cat Doctor won't do anything for him for less than $1100 even though it was the result of Dr. Eigner's misdiagnosis. I expressed my concerns about Bosco's pain when I picked him up from the Cat Doctor, and the receptionist responded that the practice would not dispense any pain meds for Bosco. I asked what I should do to minimize his suffering for the next few days, and she shrugged. "Compassionate care" indeed. Dr. Eigner is clearly more concerned with covering up her diagnostic error that blinded Bosco than she is with the suffering of the cats under her care. read more

Very clean office, love the 3 house cats that wander about. Dr. Eigner performed senior exam on my feline. Ramsey at 14 isn't crazy about the cat carrier or the vet but Dr. Eigner and staff put her at ease quickly. And me too. Accommodating & professional staff. Dr was available over holiday weekend to answer questions about Ramsey via email. Prices seemed reasonable. We will certainly be back. UPDATE- extremely unprofessional behavior. I was accidentally cc'd on email correspondence between Dr. Eigner and the front desk where Dr. wrote "the owner is extremely difficult to deal with". I replied asking Dr. if she meant me and she replied "no". Sure she didn't. Bad. Bad. Bad. I then requested my file along with Dr's notes and from the review of the file, it appears Dr. is concerned more about $ than providing quality care. What a shame. One would think an individual goes into a profession they enjoy to help cats rather than be driven by $. As a Dr. she is not only treating the cat but the owner. Very disappointed in this experience with the Cat Doctor and Dr. Eigner. And from recent reviews it seems like others have had Similar experiences. read more

Who knew taking your cats to the vet could be this pleasant!? A friend recommended that I take my kitties here after I moved from the 'burbs. The staff is WONDERFUL! I get follow-up emails asking how my furrballs are doing after they've have procedures or sick visits. They're great about responding to questions by email. I was really impressed with the thorough "report card" I get after each visit. When my newest kitty got spayed, I got a full rundown on post-op care as if I was the one who have gone under the knife. Even when Bali had complications from the sutures, the staff was really supportive. No accusations of being an over-protective owner whatsoever. They handle cats gently and the exams are very thorough. They truly love their furry clients and treat owners with great respect and kindness. read more

I've spent a pretty embarrassing amount of money on my kitty over the past few years, most of it at The Cat Doctor, and all of it worth it. The Cat Doctor has been my cat's vet for several years now. They've seen him through fleas (yuck), kidney trouble (scary), summer haircuts (hilarious), and regular checkups. He's also boarded there on one occasion. You can tell that they really think of their cats as their patients - lots of warmth and respect. When I had to take my cat in for an emergency hospitalization, they not only kept me in the loop on all the decisions they were making, but *encouraged* me to call and check on him over the few days he was there. Pretty rare, in my experience. As other reviewers have mentioned, they have a nice homey atmosphere, with lots of other cats wandering around. They also keep a good stock of various prescription diets and other cat paraphernalia (combs, treats, toys, etc). The parking around the neighborhood is decent - it's street/metered parking, but I've always been able to find a spot close by. Two important caveats: 1) They're pretty expensive. I might've looked for a new vet by now if my experiences hadn't been quite so positive. They can usually give you an estimate if you ask for one, though. 2) They close after 7pm weekdays, 1pm Saturdays, and aren't open at all on Sunday. Completely understandable, but I'd love to know that they'd be there for a middle-of-the-night or weekend emergency if I needed them. read more

The cats went a little Lord of the Flies when we left them at home for 5 days around Thanksgiving, despite having our neighbor check on them. So we boarded the beasts at the Cat Doctor around Christmas for the sake of everyone's sanity. It was much cheaper than I expected and they ran some needed test on our kitties during their stay. They were very happy when we picked them up. I was surprised when one of the employees told me Bug was her favorite out of the two, since she tends to bite and scratch, whereas Pickles is the gentlest creature ever. But since we brought her back home, Miss Bug has been terribly sweet and very lovey. I don't know if it is from all our efforts to domesticate her or her time away from us or if the Cat Doctor worked some magic on her, but she's a different cat than the one we adopted. read more

They barely said two words to me when I came in, didn't tell me how long the doctor would be, even after they ran over my scheduled appointment time. The vet I dealt with was very condescending. Instead of telling me there was nothing wrong with my cat, she proceeded to lecture me and make me feel like a complete moron. The level of service is good. Love, love, love, love the Cat Doctor. My cat, Tobias, has been a patient at the Cat Doctor since he was a lil' 8 week old furball. For the last five years, the Cat Doctor has made sure that he gets all the vaccinations and checkups to ensure he stays healthy. We've luckily only had to bring him in once for a sick visit- and the Cat Doctor nursed him back to health, while assuring his worried momma that he was going to be ok. We've mainly seen Dr Andeer and Dr Milner- both are excellent doctors and an absolute delight to deal with. The rest of the team- vet techs and front desk staff- are all knowledgable and friendly. Make sure to "like" the Cat Doctor on Facebook to get daily pictures of both the housecats and patient/boarder cats. It is crazy good marketing, but also shows you how much the staff loves cats. Speaking of loving cats, the Cat Doctor is heavily involved in helping stray kitties in the city to get the treatment they need and also help to find them forever homes. I love this. In addition, they are always taking on stray patients who seem hopeless (kitties with severe disabilities or injuries). I love this. They are genuine cat lovers and I will continue to support their business for this reason. Other reviewers have commented on price. I can't really speak to that because Tobias is my first pet and has never been to another vet. In my opinion, I will pay whatever is necessary to keep Tobias healthy. I can say, however, I have NEVER felt ripped off by the Cat Doctor. If you are in Philadelphia and you have a cat, you need to take him/her to the Cat Doctor. You will not be disappointed. read more

My partner and I own an elderly cat who has a lot of health issues, so when we moved to Philly a few years ago it was really important for us to find a vet who was conscientious and caring but also wasn't into doing lots of crazy expensive tests or over-medicating our cat (we've had experiences with both kinds before). After some research, we decided to take our cat to Megan Andeer at the Cat Doctor, and we've been really happy with our choice. She's really sweet and patient with our cat but is also really friendly and nice to chat with. We have been going to her for several years now, and our cat has been pretty healthy, but our cat was quite sick over a weekend evening/ Sunday (when their office is closed) and I emailed Dr. Andeer on Saturday evening, hoping she'd get the email before we called her Monday morning. She replied to my email ten minutes later-- talk about dedication! I can tell she's really invested in my cat's well-being. All of the people who work there are great-- the techs and desk staff are really friendly and easygoing. The only drawback to this place is that it's a little on the pricey side, but because our cat has so many health problems, it was important for us to go with a doctor with whom we felt very comfortable and who shared a similar philosophy about our pet's care. read more

I have gone to the Cat Doctor for my two rescue cats since I adopted them in 2006, and would not take them anywhere else! I bring in a fair number of foster cats too. Dr. Andeer is extremely patient and knowledgeable, and the rest of the staff is great too. More than any other vet I've known, Dr. Andeer consistently stays up to date on new literature on cat health. She has always been willing to investigate new treatments, confer with colleagues across the country, and generally investigate whatever problem I've dragged in with a foster cat. The Cat Doctor is one of the only places I know of that actually tests for and treats Bartonella which has helped several of my fosters -- many vets still seem to think that it's not a common disease despite recent research that shows otherwise. Moreover, everyone at the Cat Doctor is very well-versed in caring for difficult cats -- despite his regular freak-outs, they still greet my cat warmly and give him head scratches, and they aren't fazed by angry cat noises. Certainly they are on the expensive side, but it's worth it for the quality of care. read more

For any cat owner, this is the place to take your cat for veterinary care. What I love the most about this place is that they deal with cats only. Nothing against dogs but the last thing you want for your cat is to be in a waiting room with barking dogs and chirping birds. The waiting room itself is a great experience. Several of their rescue cats roam the waiting area and will often make their way to your lap for a snuggle while you wait. The atmosphere of the waiting room is like that of a fancy, cozy apartment; filled with nice couches and a comfortable waiting area. The doctors are amazing! They are all extremely knowledgable and understand you and your day's needs. I was even ale to email my doctor a question that she answered immediately. I'm pleased with the services offered at Cat Doctor. My cat is on a special diet food (although she hasn't lost an ounce!) and I needed a place that also offered boarding services. I've never boarded my cat before, so I was quite anxious when dropping her off. The associate who took her to the back was really nice and told me that I could call every day if I wanted to check up. The boarding rates are quite reasonable and the food price is comparable to the price offered by my previous vet. Our cat has an auto immune disease that usually takes forever to get diagnosed because it's not very common- they recognized and caught it almost immediately so we could start treatment asap. Also making appointments is a breeze, I can usually always get an appointment by the next day, which puts my nerves at ease when I have a sick kitty. The only downside is it is expensive, if you don't have insurance for your pet I would maybe look to an alternative. But the place is in a convenient area, has a wonderful, knowledgeable staff and I'm never nervous about having to leave our cat in their care. Just took our 6 year old, Madeline, for her very last checkup before we move to Ohio. And I can tell you, one of the things that I will truly miss about Philly is The Cat Doctor. They've been with us from the very beginning with Maddie and I've always been amazed at how loving and caring they are towards each cat they come across and how they put forth the real effort to make sure that you, as a cat parent, are satisfied. Maddie was just in for a routine checkup, her vaccinations and a little update on instructions for moving her and spending 8.5+ hours in the car. Dr. Eigner was very, very informative and answered all of the questions I had, including some I hadn't even thought of prior to the visit -- she even offered to find us a new vet in Ohio. When she gave Maddie her shots, she had me pet her head to keep her calm, and she let her run around the office and hide while we talked so that she could get comfortable before the rest of the exam (Maddie is the definition of a 'scaredy cat'). After our consultation, she typed up everything we had discussed in her personalized discharge papers and gave me a copy to take home. Yes, this place is a bit costly, but in my opinion, they work for it. I've never had a bad (or even mediocre) experience here in the 6 years that we've been with them, and they are out of this world on both their knowledge and their patient care. These are the only people in the city who love cats more than I do. A little pricey, but always courteous and treat both of my cats gently. After one of my cats had a seizure, they medicated and bathed him for no additional fees. Consistently helpful and caring, they are worth the money. read more

I absolutely Love and Totally Trust the peeps at The Cat Doctor! They have taken care of me and my (20 year-old) kitten for the last 7 years, and a few weeks ago, when the kitten could no longer stand or walk, they helped me get through having to put the kitten down. :-( I will be getting a new kitten in a few weeks, and, without a doubt in my mind, The Cat Doctor will be my veterinarian of choice once again! It seems like some people have had negative experiences here, but we have had mostly good interactions with the staff and vet. We switched vets for convenience and cost, and this other vet diagnosed our 18 year old cat with diabetes. After some clear incompetence on their part (and a lot of money spent by us) we went back to the Cat Doctor for a 2nd opinion. We are so glad we did, since it turns out our cat is not diabetic at all, and we could have killed him with the amount of insulin the other vet was proscribing. Only negative note is that they often recommend blood work without telling you the cost - which can be sky high! Make sure to pay attention or you won't be leaving there for under $300. read more

I can't say enough positive things about the Cat Doctor. The office is extremely clean and such a comforting environment for both humans and kitties. The staff cares so much about each cat and they take their time during each appointment. The post appointment summaries that they send are very helpful. The cat doctor is excellent in the event of emergency care and their staff is very nice. My only complaint is that they are extremely expensive and the prices that they quote over the phone are ALWAYS lower than what you end up paying. I would take me cat to another vet for normal shots and save the Cat Doctor for more emergant visits. read more

There is a slight chance that the staff here likes cats better then they like people, but then again, I like people better then I like cats, so if they're gonna pamper this felines so I don't have to, then good for them. They are very very on top of their stuff though, not incredibly expensive, and great at what they do. And the cat's seem to love them, so that's good enough for me. read more

They saved my 13 year-old cat's life by diagnosing him with inflammatory bowel disease. Blink my cat gradually stopped eating. All the typical ailments were ruled out i.e. pancreatitis, UTI's etc. They were able to diagnose him by using ultrasound on him which I wouldn't have been able to get at most typical vets. I probably would have had to take him to Pennsylvania Vet Hospital or Emergency Clinic for an ultrasound which would have been more stress on the cat and inconvenient for me. read more
