We adopted our dog from Operation Ava in May 2012. He's 3 years old and while Operation Ava labeled him as half papillon, half chihuahua, he doesn't look anything like it. To us, he looks more like half Corgi, half Lab. Although he has ongoing issues that we have to work on, we love and adore him so much. I went to Operation Ava thinking that I was just looking and when I saw him, I fell in love and had to take him home. The adoption process was very easy. We were able to bring him back within the same week. Just make sure that your references are available and know to pick up Operation Ava's phone call to make the process go smoothly and quickly. My favorite part about Operation Ava was that they kept the dogs in private rooms, instead of crates. Overall, they were very helpful when adopting him,giving us tips on what he likes and didn't like. My friend told me about Saved Me & how you can play with the dogs after signing a waiver, so of course I dragged my BF there with me after having brunch in the area. I met a sweet pitbull named Olivia & I also got to play with one of the lab mix puppies during my first visit. I was SUPER tempted to adopt another dog, but my BF talked me out of it, since we already have Payton at home & she's already a hand full. A year later, I visited Saved Me again with my BF & a couple of friends. That was when I met Maggie, one of the sweetest pitbull mixes you'll ever meet. My GF & I fell in love with her instantly. We wanted to adopt her on the spot, but agreed with our BFs that we'll sleep on it to make sure we won't change our mind. I sure as heck didn't change my mind. Jessica at Saved Me was very helpful over the phone. I emailed her my application & provided her all the information she needed for me to be an approved adopter. I've had Maggie for over 2 weeks now & I LOVE her. She loves people & has an outgoing personality. She gets along with dogs easily & is so easy to train. I love that Saved Me allows you to get personal with the dogs before you make an inform decision. I played with Maggie for an hour & that's when I knew she was perfect. Overall I would not want to deter anyone from adopting from this shelter, as I do believe the volunteers and staff are doing their best to help the animals they bring in. I love the dog I adopted from Saved Me very very much and have zero regrets about adopting her. However I do feel that Saved Me could've better prepared me for the medical issues she would end up having within a few months of adopting her. About 4 months after I adopted my dog, who was a stray from Georgia prior to being rescued by Saved Me, she started experiencing chronic vomiting and diarrhea. She also had an occasional cough, which didn't stick out to be the most immediate problem compared to the chronic illness. After several trips to the vet, finally a new vet that I tried had mentioned the possibility of my dog being heart worm positive and recommended we do a test. The possibility of my dog having heart worm didn't occur to me, since she had been up to date with her preventatives and her symptoms didn't exactly correlate with heart worm symptoms (heavy breathing, sneezing, coughing, lethargy). Well, I had her tested nonetheless and she came back positive for heart worm. Upon researching heart worm further I found out it can take up 6-7 months to test positive for heart worm, which would explain why she didn't test positive yet when she was brought into the rescue. She most likely was infected while being a stray in the south, where heart worm is much more susceptible. My dog is now on treatment for heart worm, which is expensive and causing her to have all sorts of side effects due to the medicine she's on. But I am just relieved to finally have an answer to her health issues and know that she will likely go on to live a long healthy life once she finishes treatment. My frustration with Saved Me is that when I contacted them to inform them of the situation they had told me this has happened before. I only wish they would've informed me of this possibility, since they admittedly said this situation has happened in the past, so that I could've had her tested a month and a half ago when she initially started having health issues. Instead I wasted hundreds of dollars on vet visits and testing other possible solutions to her problems, because I had no idea this was even a possibility. Again, I love my dog and wouldn't change a thing when it comes to having adopted her, I simply wish I was better informed. If you happen to adopt a dog from Saved Me that was previously a stray ( particularly in the south) be sure to get all of the information you can from Saved Me up front in case you experience a similar situation. read more

We adopted our dog from Operation Ava more than a year ago. Since then, I've been a volunteer at this Northern Liberties shelter. They generally get their animals from the ACCT and southern high kill shelters. Basically they are saving animals from euthanasia. Due to their wide variety of events, the dogs and cats get a lot of public face time and many are adopted quickly. As for the shelter itself...what makes this place unique is their giant dog park out back. The dogs get plenty of exercise throughout the day. Each dog is not in a crate but in an individual room. They have a "living room" area where people can get to know the animals before they adopt. When you visit "Doggie Style" stores through the city, the animals in the stores are from Operation Ava. Bottom line: they saved my girl from being homeless or worse and we love them for that! read more

I had a wonderful experience adopting from Operation Ava. I came in looking for a kitten or young cat after having a negative experience at PAWS. At PAWS, they seemed understaffed and the staff that was there was distracted and not helping the potential adopters. At Operation Ava the staff was friendly and extremely helpful. I was encourage to play and spend time with as many animals as I wanted and they were very accommodating by letting me take my kitten home that day. I would recommend Operation Ava to any Philadelphian looking to adopt a dog or cat. Their facilities are clean and bright. Their animals are happy and healthy and their staff is welcoming and helpful. The icing on the cake is their association with Doggie Style, which is right downstairs. My first experience with this operation proved sorely disappointing. I submitted an application for dog at a nearby Doggie Style by email to Ray, which it says to do at the website. Ray never got back to me and days later I went in to see the little guy and they tell me he's going to a home later. I asked how that could have happened and emailed ray, who tells me he sent my app to the wrong place. Meanwhile it turns out they rushed the other app without following protocol otherwise they would have known there was already one submitted. Thanks to this wonderful, amazing shelter, boyfriend and I added a new member to our family: a lovable little sweetheart of a puppy! The folks over at Operation Ava are kind and compassionate and go out of their way to help you with paperwork and the whole adoption process. I can't say enough good things about the work they do to help save animals, and the lengths they go to to give them good homes. The fees are reasonable and include a vet exam, all vaccinations, microchipping, 30 days of free pet insurance, and spay/neuter services if the animal isn't already altered. Plus, the money goes to a great cause! It's great that there are still humane, no-kill shelter options in the city. Too precious! We visited for your grand opening in March, to help a friend adopt a puppy from your open house... but we ended up rescuing a little kitten girl! I have to say, the facilities are really nice, but so tiny! I guess it's just like any pet area, though. I understand there are plenty of volunteers, (and they're always taking more!) to walk and play with the animals. They have a really diverse assortment of breeds, and prices range on age (puppies and kittens are more that adult dogs and senior dogs.) Kittens/Cats are $75, Puppies $350, Dogs are $275, Senior dogs are $225. Visit their website to get a feel for the upbeat nature of this complete care shelter. When you walk in, you'll be in the retail area, where they sell adorable cookies and treats, clothing that will make you laugh too hard, all leashes, harnesses, carriers, foods (even organic ones!), you name it. Up the stairs to your left are all the precious little pals. If you plan to rescue a pet in your visit, you should bring an appropriate carrier or crate. When we got a kitten, we had to buy a cardboard carrier there to take her home in. It was 7 or 8 dollars. Also, if you rent, you must present a copy of your lease or written consent by your landlord about owning a pet. Don't go there and get all excited and then not be able to leave with a pet. This is a review of the retail shop. I'm bordering on animal hoarder the way it is, so I don't dare visit the adoption center. My dog's food was down to it's last crumbs and as I thought to myself 'aw shit, now I gotta drive all the way out to Petsmart', a lightbulb went off. Suddenly it hit me that Operation Ava is close by! I was able to walk over, pick up dog food, a new harness for my pup and some catnip all in one trip. The girl that was working that day was really helpful and knowledgeable as she helped me pick out dog food (they don't carry the one that my dog normally eats). Pros: open 7 days a week, large selection of dog & cat food, has all the dog & cat essentials (leashes, bowls, litter, food, toys etc), friendly and knowledgeable staff, proceeds go towards saving the lives of animals Cons: they don't have the big 40lb dog food bags that I normally buy and they didn't seem to have any portable doggie water bottles (this would be a great item to carry in a neighborhood where people are always out & about with their dogs & a dog park). read more

The dogs are wonderful and really need families. They get their shots, are bathed, microchipped, and overall health check. They typically all have good dispositions and are very adoptable. The adoption center, on the other hand, is understaffed. I think they mostly rely on volunteers but they need more full time paid staff. I believe the owners (Doggie Style) are addressing the issues but considering that OpAva is run more like a business (they are not non-profit PAWS, or PSPCA shelter,) I would think that they would want to set themselves above the rest by having higher standards and offering better facilities. The rooms are way too small and the dogs seldom get let out unless a volunteer takes them. I volunteered there for a while but with sooo many dogs and so few employees and volunteers it just broke my heart. Delighted they are a "no kill" shelter, there are some great dogs there, the center just needs more staff. Anyone who reads this, please visit the shelter, adopt the animals, and volunteer if you can! read more

I adopted a very ill dog from this shelter a year ago. The staff did not tell me exactly how sick he was. A year later, and at great personal expense, his immediate health problem have been dealt with, but he has a defective heart, plus needs to be on tranquilizers constantly. We got our pit here and love him so much! Most of the animals have their own little room which is clean and cozy. Better then a cage. There is an attached large yard in the back for the dogs to run and play. Come visit and come adopt! Please note- It is very, very rare that they take in strays at this location. I visited Operation Ava about 3--4 times a week for almost two months when I decided to adopt. The staff was absolutely wonderful! They approved my application very quickly (after getting vet references and viewing my lease) and were always enthusiastic and helpful when I came to look at their dogs. By the end of my first week, they knew me by name and knew what i was looking for in a dog. The shelter itself was always clean when I came. The staff seemed to work very hard to keep the kennels clean and the animals happy. They are a no-kill shelter, which is great because they take animals from other high-kill shelters in the city. The facility itself is beautiful. They have a very large outdoor yard for the dogs (which is impressive in the city) and a vet onsite as well. The petshop downstairs is a little pricey, but all the proceeds go towards the shelter so it's understandable. When I finally did adopt a dog, she was fully vetted, microchipped, and spayed within days of her coming to the shelter. She did have a little kennel cough when I adopted her but with antibiotics she was fine within a week. If you are looking to adopt, Operation Ava is the place to go! read more

I will try to make this as short as possible, but the events make it hard to. My boyfriend and I were looking to adopt a dog. I've had plenty of expierince with dogs, have lived with dogs since birth, and take great care of pets. This was my boyfriend's first dog though, but there's a first for everything! We went there and saw an adorable 2 month old mix breed pit/boxer/staffy pup, Lulu. One of the younger male workers was great and helped us out. He cared about the animals and was really great with them! But the other worker was rude and just kept giving us dirty looks the whole time. I am not one to allow myself to feel uncomfortable so I ignored it. We decided to apply for Lulu, and went through the paperwork necessary. The questions on there were understandable, and I understand that they want to make sure their animals were going to a good home... however, how judgemental they were about the information we put is incredible. One question asked how much we planned to spend on the dog annually... every dog has different needs! I put "however much is necessary to keep her happy and healthy"... apparently that's not an good answer by the looks on their female employee's face... might I mention, every dog has different needs! Some dogs are perfectly healthy, some dogs are not due to genetics and can fall sick or need surgeries! (My pug had a $1000 surgery, and my family paid that because we would spend anything for our pets' health)... the point is that no one truly knows how much the dog will need, and that money is not and object for me personally when it comes to the health and happiness of my pet. They asked for 3 references and the number of our landlord. We left after she said they would call us and call our references then get back to us... days passed and no calls to our references or landlord. I know, "adopt, don't shop"... but we weren't going to keep hope after our experience. We winded up finding an ad on Craigslist of a guy trying to sell a beautiful 8 week old pit pup. We got her knowing she was sick (that's just the type of person I am) and we winded up spending several hundred in vet bills to get her better. She is now almost 16 weeks old and pup is happy, healthy, and beyond well taken care of! She loves her home! I feel bad about not adopting, but our experience really shied us away. It's really sad that their practices are preventing their animals from finding great homes. Don't get me wrong, their facility is clean and what not, but the goal is to get the pups out of the facility, not keep them in. On top of that, adoption should be a fun process, not an uncomfortable one. read more

The staff was extremely pleasant; the owner (I'm not completely sure what you'd call him) was combative, condescending and pedantic. While I understand that proper protocol is necessary to ensure the dogs' safety, there is absolutely no reason to treat customers so terribly. So, if you decide to visit this shelter, it might be better to minimize your contact with him. We wanted to adopt dog and heard about this shelter from friends. Although they warned us about the owner, we decided to take a look. Upon arrival, we noticed a strange dichotomy among the staff. The younger members were pleasant and informative. But the older ones, particularly the owner, were at best reticent; at worst cold and/or rude. However a dog stole our hearts so we decided to commence the adoption process. A day after we had submitted the adoption paperwork, the owner called us and told us that we were not candidates because our dog had not been vaccinated for two years. I told him that our vet had said that it was fine to wait three years and I readily admitted that I may have misunderstood her. I also said that our dog had responded very poorly to the vaccine with symptoms that mirrored kidney or bladder problems (shivering, frequent urination, incontinence, nausea and lethargy), and that I thought we were compliant with the PA laws. However, I said that we could get him the shot immediately because I may have misunderstood our vet's instructions. Something that I said must have set him off because he started yelling at me. He said that I didn't know what I was talking about, didn't know the law, that he'd been doing "this for 20 years" and that he was the owner; not me. (Ironically, I was a lawyer who specialized in health law and vaccinations. Now I'm a medical student and my wife is a health care compliance officer. So we're not completely clueless about this stuff, to say the least). Whenever I tried to ask a question, he would yell "you're wrong." I said that I had an email from our vet saying that he wasn't due until this year. He, again, said that I was wrong and that it was impossible. Which made no sense to me because I wouldn't forge an email from my vet just to adopt a dog. Anyway, I decided to let it go as talking to him was obviously pointless. The way he treated us was so disturbing. I can't help but wonder why he'd treat someone (who wanted to help a dog in need) so poorly. For that reason, I would never recommend this place. read more

The dogs at Saved Me seem very happy, and the volunteers seem very committed and passionate (a fantastic combination!) The shelter pulls dogs from euthanasia lists in the South, which is just awesomely awesome. That said, the veterinary care the animals receive is less-than-stellar and post-adoption email correspondence is dismissive at best. I adopted my dog from Saved Me. Her pre-adoption exam and spay were performed by The Pet Mechanic. Her exam was reported as normal, aside from two 4cm "swellings" in her mammary glands (looking at the handwritten note attached to the printed record, it appears that 4 cm should have been entered as "less than" 1 cm, given that the masses were not the size of Ritz crackers. I'm sure the less than symbol was mistaken as the front of a 4 when the receptionist entered it into the computer). The "swellings" were rock hard nodules that felt like large pebbles in her mammary gland. I was surprised by how the medical record characterized the masses, but was not dissuaded from adopting her. I adopted her the day after her spay. She had obvious kennel cough -- which became pneumonia within 24 hours and required hospitalization and two weeks of multi-antibiotic therapy-- and pyoderma along her spay incision (the veterinarian spayed her without bathing her, although she was covered in an oily film of urine and dirt). I informed Saved Me of her pneumonia, given that she came to the shelter with several other dogs. I wanted to give them a heads up in case the others were coughing/had nasal discharge. I received a canned "thank you for adopting" response with a kennel cough fact sheet and summary of the free pet insurance attached. (The pet insurance does not cover anything related to a pre-existing condition or respiratory infections that are not upper respiratory in nature. Pneumonia is a lower respiratory infection, and is therefore not covered by the limited policy). After her pneumonia resolved, we had her "swellings" removed and sent for biopsy. The masses were multifocal chronic sclerosing galactophoritis with cysts and granulomatous mastitis. Thankfully, they were benign. I certainly don't regret adopting my dog or want to dissuade anyone from adopting from Saved Me, but definitely think Saved Me should improve the pre-adoption medical care and post-adoption correspondence aspects of their operation. read more

We adopted two chihuahua mixes from this shelter. This was the best decision. They have have a variety of dogs here ranging in age and size. The adoption fee fee is around 300 dollars but the dogs at vaccinated, spade, and microchipped. They usually showcase the smaller dogs in the windows of the Doggie Style stores, but they also have wonderful dogs at the shelter in Northern Liberties. If If you can't adopt a dog right now, I know tat they are always looking for volunteers at the shelter to walk the dogs, etc. read more

We had a pretty great experience with Operation Ava. I emailed and called them ten times before we adopted, asking a billion questions. I told them what we needed in a new animal-family member and one staff member suggested a certain animal. They explained how to apply and my husband went and met our darling. the only issues were our paperwork was incomplete and when we went to get groomed, we didnt have all the necessary info. We called and got it though. We also have no idea what kind of animal the dog actually is, but thats ok. At first the dog was a little aggressive towards other dogs and i left multiple messages for the Operation Ava behavior director, but he never called me back. It was annoying. we hired a trainer and our dog is beyond sweet and perfect now. So I love Operation Ava for matching us with the perfect pet, but there were a few tiny bumps. read more

I had been trying to adopt a dog using Petfinder for MONTHS. I sent applications, essays, consented to home visits and I'm pretty sure I signed off to be someone's kidney donor, all for naught. I applied for dogs I felt would have been a perfect mutual fit, but nothing came of it. I was walking past Operation Ava in May and there in the front window was my girl, the doggie I'd wanted. The staff were extremely kind, knowledgeable and helpful and after spending time with the dog and deciding we were a good match, I filled out my paperwork, was approved, and came home with her that day. The store downstairs is well stocked and procedes go to support the shelter. You should'nt even consider a breeder when a place like Op Ava is in the neighborhood. Their website is well run. We adopted our Chihuahua mix ( we think he is a Greyhuahua) on August 22, 2015 from the Northern Liberties location. He was called Biggy but we named him Eddie. We've had a few other dogs, but none even come close to him in intelligence, personality, and sweetness. We fell seriously in love with our boy and he has made our lives better each and every day. He saved me, not the other way around! I am so grateful to this wonderful organization for saving these dogs and enabling us to give them the good, loving homes they deserve. Eddie is our little King and he enjoys a great life thanks to them. I wish I could go back and save them all! But seriously, we found the entire process easy, pleasant and very worthwhile. I am reviewing the Operation ava STORE. I have never gone thru any adoption. I stopped by here because I was running errands and needed a new collar for my dog. The woman behind the counter was very nice and helpful and showed me a couple of different sizes. When I needed a size that was in between the two she kindly said she would order it if needed. I ended up going with the large one, and she informed me that if I needed to exchange it, it would be no problem. She also stopped to have a chat with me about the cat wandering around. I can not say enough good things about Operation Ava. I visited the adoption center on a Saturday and the staff were amazing in their efforts to find a dog that matched the needs of our family. They guided us through the application process making it as simple as possible. Though we were unable to find a match on Saturday, the staff worked really hard to understand what we needed and made recommendations about dogs still going through intake who would be available for adoption in the coming week. By Tuesday night, we were connected with out perfect match and she was part of our family in about 60 minutes. One trip to the adoption center and you will see how truly loving the staff is of the animals they care for. While the ultimate goal is to find homes for the animals in their care, I really sensed they are looking to find the right fit too. The feeds seemed reasonable to me...in line with breed specific and other small rescue organizations. When you consider the feeding, shelter, vet care, spaying/neutering, chipping, shots, etc. I highly doubt the fees come close to covering it in many cases. If you are searching for a wonderful addition to your family, please consider one of the darling animals at Operation Ava. I adopted a dog today from Operation Ava. An adorable Boston Terrier. She is home and sleeping on the couch as I write. My experience was overall ok and I give the staff and volunteers so much credit. I did find a particular staff person to be prickly and a bit pushy in her approach. I got the feeling that I should be lucky she was going to let me adopt. Don't let that stop you from going to Operation Ava. We adopted Arnold (the dog formerly known as Prince) July 2013. He is fantastic. We set out with the plan to visit different shelters regularly until we found a good match. Incredibly he was the first dog at the first shelter. The staff was great - not pushy at all. I felt like they wanted us to get the right dog. I had seen some dogs on their website that I was potentially interested in. They asked me questions about my household and schedule and steered me away from dogs that they would not be a good fit. Whenever you see animals in confined spaces, it's hard not to feel sorry for them. I thought the size space for each dog was adequate and very clean. The dogs seemed well cared for. We were able to spend time with Arnold in a larger room and also take him out in the dog yard and play with him. We have brought him back to be groomed and they did a fantastic job. While I love the concept of this group, I wish they went about the adoptions different. I adopted a six month old pup from them. Prior to the adoption, they talked him up like he was a saint and in perfect condition. They didn't have any info on his background for me claiming "he was about to be put down, so we didn't have any time for details on him." The day I adopted him, he peed in the facility on the floor. I asked if that's something I need to work on with him, they said no and told me he was just excited, he's never peed. They also gave me meds he was on for a surgery from a laceration. They could've told me he has stitches before I adopted him. Got him home, and it's been four days of issues. He bites, hard. Which they assured me he was only doing when I first met him from excitement. His background is unknown because he was found on the street as a stray. He has zero potty training skills. If they just disclosed all of this info with me in the beginning, I still would've adopted him. I don't mind the training and obedience classes, I just wouldn't have put my hand that was just operated on anywhere near him. But I didn't know any of this, so I did, and he bit my recovering wound It really makes them look bad. read more
