We adopted a dog through operation Ava which was at doggie style on 21st and south. We have had the dog a week now and he is just perfect. This was the best decision I have ever made (other than marrying my husband)! Wouldn't have been possible without this amazing organization! He is in perfect health thanks to you!

I was only talking about the red head woman who checked me out who seemed patient and informative. The rest of staff was horrible and discriminatory. Please my review on their Yelp. No one has reviewed them in over a year so if they take it down this is what I posted today: "Denied adoption of a beautiful kitty on 12/6/24 simply because the kitty had Feline HIV. I believe her name was Snow and she was grey. The women who denied her adoption to me had a less feminine look and it felt as if she was trying to intimidate me or coerce me to violence even though I showed no aggression. The blond woman who was at front desk when you first walk in got up and walked away from the desk without saying a work to me during checkout. I feel she was very disrespectful yet I remained calm and cooperative. I would hate to feel as though I was discriminated against for my race for being more "aggressive" as I did not discriminate against the brunette woman who denied me my first pick kitten for her possible sexuality. Neither racial or sexual orientation discrimination is right yet I felt racial on my end with no disrespect to either women. The red head woman who had to finish my checkout was much kinder and made me feel better about adopting my second choice Shadow. Both the brunette and blonde seemed much nicer to the Caucasian couple that came in as I was leaving who there to pick up foster kittens. Everyone should be treated equally whether race, sexual orientation or disability. They also should not be denied an adoption due to feline hiv as it is very treatable. No matter who you are you should not support this behavior nor allow it to continue. Please report any notes of this even if you are on the fairer side of treatment. "

I reached out to PAWS hoping to adopt or foster a cat--offering a safe, loving home in a city…read moreoverwhelmed by strays--and was met with a cold, dismissive response. I was told they "don't recommend" adopting a cat to help with a mouse problem, and that they "can't help" me. That was it. I understand not all cats are mousers. That's not the point. The point is that I wanted to give a cat a better life, and PAWS didn't show an ounce of interest in that. For an organization that spays/neuters animals and puts them back on the street, you'd think they'd be eager to find permanent homes--especially for cats who might be a good fit for natural pest control. If you're looking to adopt with care and intention, I'd recommend finding a rescue that actually values people who want to help.

Yay City Kitties! I adopted a cat from this group (a local non-profit, no-kill cat rescue) last…read moreyear. I have many, many good things to say but will try to limit the list... Thing 1: the cats! I was genuinely impressed by how well they take care of their rescues. Every stray they pick up gets top-notch vet care, including spay/neuter and screening/treatment for health issues, and is placed in a loving foster home (as in, a real person's home). It's amazing how scared, pathetic-looking cats get transformed into healthy, friendly ones by the time they're judged ready to adopt out. The $75 adoption fee covers all of this care, and it's honestly worth it. Thing 2: the support. Because each cat's "foster parent" knows the cat's personality, City Kitties is good at suggesting matches for what you're looking for (eg, playful cat always up in your business, quiet lapcat, etc) and what your home is like (other pets, etc). They really care where their cats end up and both screen potential adopters carefully and make sure you know what the cat is like. Before you adopt, you get to 1) read cute online-dating-like profiles about the cats and 2) visit them in their foster homes. And because each cat has been screened by a vet, you're likely to know about any ongoing health issues before deciding anything. Also: Even after you adopt, City Kitties is great about being available to help with concerns or questions. I've asked about routine health issues and even about cat drama when introducing the new little cat to my resident cat, and they've always been very nice and helpful. Thing 3: the people. Oh man, are they great. You'd never guess it from how professional and organized they are, but City Kitties is just a small group of people in West Philly, who started this and keep doing it as volunteers because they care. (The business address up there is for someone's house!) You can feel really good about where your money's going if you donate, and their benefit events are genuinely fun even if you're not at all a crazy cat-lady/cat-gent. Thing 4: the cute. http://www.youtube.com/citykitties How can you not get behind that? Such a good group. Adopt, foster, or donate if you can!

Submitted (electronic) application on October 9, application was approved October 14, kittens selected October 18. The application process was straightforward. It asks for personal references, probes for pet history, and has pointed questions to determine if you understand how to care for a cat. I got an email the next morning saying my application looked great and they would process it ASAP. It did take until Oct 14 to get confirmation that the application was approved, and I did have to follow up to get the confirmation. It seems as though the only contact there is Shauna, the owner/operator, and she is a busy lady. We visited the cat cafe on Oct 18 to meet the prospective kittens. The cafe has a nice, comfortable, very cat friendly area to mingle with the kitties. There are nests and beds all over that the cats are just chilling out in. All the cats were friendly and well socialized. They have the kittens in a separate room to keep them from getting bullied, and that is a comfy space for cats as well. There are plenty of hideouts for the kittens, as well as toys to play with them. The kittens were mostly happy to be cuddled and picked up, with a few exceptions for very shy or wary kittens. We met Shauna, who is very friendly and knowledgeable. After selecting the kittens we wanted to adopt, Shauna asked me to email her letting her know which ones we want. They don't do same-day adoptions. All the cats are fully vetted prior to adoption: vaccinated, spayed/neutered, flea and tick treated, microchipped, and tested negative for feline aids. Considering this is done by the rescue, the $150 adoption fee per cat (or buy-one-get-one!) is extremely reasonable. Due to my schedule I won't bring the fur babies home until early November, and Shauna was more than happy to let them stay at the cafe for a couple of extra weeks.

We made an appointment to go to the café, which was not necessarily productive for us. We were looking for two adult cats. When the café gets crowded, it's difficult to get a feel for the individual cats, let alone how they interact with each other. We ended up speaking to one of the team members who was able to access three pairs of bonded cats currently in their foster system. There are literally dozens and dozens of cats and kittens available beyond the ones who reside at the café at any given time. We were fortunate that Kathy, the owner, stopped by and overheard our conversation. She was able to reach out to three foster homes on our behalf and expedite visits. The two foster homes/families we visited were extraordinarily friendly, helpful, gracious, generous with their time, it was just a wonderful experience. We fell in love on our first visit and were able to adopt Dennis and Twiggy, both about a year old. Both had been in the system, pretty much their entire lives. Twiggy was shy and skittish, and only gradually came out of his shell. Thanks to bonding with Dennis, the tabby. When people wanted to adopt Dennis without his pal, the foster family held firm, ensuring the two would stay together For both of their well-being. That's the kind of care the people involved with Green Street take when it comes to their feline friends. They put the cats first. They lead with love. It has been a month as of today, and we are very much a happy family again, thanks to welcoming Dennis and Twiggy, and thanks to Morgan, their foster mom, and everyone working to distinguish Green Street.

I adopted my cat without her being spayed first and had to bring her back to the owner of Green Street, to get spayed after having her for a few months. Cats should never be adopted out without being spayed or neutered. The owner was also incredibly rude to me and refused to use the name I gave my cat and only referred to her by the name they gave her when she was rescued..which is just ridiculous and all her spay paperwork says the old name. My cat is not microchipped, a practice I don't believe Green Street does which adds on an additional thing for cat owners to worry about. It was also $125 to adopt my cat that was about a year old which is expensive considering she wasn't a kitten and also wasn't even microchipped and I had to go out of my way to bring her back and forth to get spayed! I'm so grateful for my cat but would not recommend adopting out of Green Street.
