White chocolate crème brûlée served with almond brittle
    Karyn P.

We had an amazing dinner here our first night visiting Maine. The oysters were the best we have ever had and the waitress told us they were caught an hour before being served.... so fresh! We tried the salmon, the cod, the Brussel sprouts, the Mac and cheese and the asparagus and it was all delicious! The best part however was the white chocolate crème brûlée!

We had a lovely dinner at The Causeway! Highlights included: 1. The space itself! We sat outside and got to enjoy the view of their lawn down to the water and the curving Clark Island Rd. 2. The service! It was thoughtful and attentive. 3. The community vibe! Locals for sure know how special this place is, and it was neat to be a part of such a jovial atmosphere. 4. The cocktails! Every one we had was delicious. Unsure of what to get? Just ask; the staff is so knowledgeable. 5. THE VEGAN CRAB CAKES. This was the absolute stand out for me. One of the best things I've eaten in years. It was two jackfruit based cakes on some arugula with a remoulade. I wish this was offered as a main course, to be totally honest, like six crab cakes on a bigger bed of arugula. Unfortunately, we didn't love our Veggie Burger (it was pretty dry and completely fell apart upon picking it up) or the Vegan Lobster Wrap (which is hearts of palm and mushrooms tossed in mayo... it was very wet and kind of sour). We also thought there'd be more roasted potatoes on the side (as you can see in the photos, there were five or six tiny wedges). Over all The Causeway is offering a welcoming and relaxed dining (and brunch, too) experience in the midcoast area that focuses on supporting local Maine farms and fishermen with something for everyone on their menus.

Lobster benny + blueberry pancakes, on the patio

I'm a self-declared brunch aficionado--I love brunch, would rather dine out for breakfast/brunch than any other meal, and have sampled brunch on all 7 continents. This brunch was one of my all-time favorites. It was our 1st time here and we decided to give it a try because we are traveling with our 2 pups and they were welcome to join us on the patio here. So glad we came--its our new favorite spot on the Midcoast. The coffee: just perfect. I was tempted by the house bloody mary that was at nearly every table and looked incredibly fresh, but wasn't up for alcohol with the day I had ahead. As we were leaving, I overheard someone ordering a virgin one and kicked myself for not thinking of that. The lobster benny is not to be missed (though needed a bit more hollandaise given how large the English muffins were). Apparently the bennies all previously came with hash browns? The server noted they had a new chef as of a few days ago and would now come with smashed potatoes. Well, the new chef is fantastic and I don't know what the hash browns were like, but the potatoes were solid. The blueberry pancakes were fluffy and delicious. They are served with real maple syrup and butter, but didn't really need either. The reuben was flavorful and not greasy. The sauerkraut looked canned but tasted house-made, so not sure what magic the chef worked there. We contemplated ordering a 2nd one to-go to share as a snack later--which isn't something we usually do, but it was just that good. Brunch was accompanied by live folk music, from a delightful duo who I would pay to go see perform and kept the classics coming--but at a volume where conversation was still comfortable. Together with gorgeous views and amazingly attentive service, it was one of the most enjoyable brunches I've had in years. We can't wait to return.

Beautiful location, great food and atmosphere is a summation for this restaurant. The dates bacon wrapped appetizers, a great creation filled with flavors and fillings. The main meal was prepared with fresh ingredients, and excellent presentation. The whole experience was topped with a great service! Don't forget the excellent choice of "happy drinks". First but not last visit. Highly recommended!'

Oh my goodness, this restaurant is amazing! The food, service and ambiance blew away our expectations -and we were a large party of 12 people! Let's talk ambiance quickly: the lovely, friendly hostess put our large group on the deck with a gorgeous view of the water and the sunset. We didn't need the heater but it was available. The tables throughout the restaurant were decorated in a rustic minimalist design and the interior ambiance was cozy. The deck where we ate was clean and nautical with trendy Edison lighting. Now I'll turn my attention to the service. My traveling companions and I would like to give the Causeway staff 10 stars in this category! My group of 12 is a boisterous crowd, and our waiter, Jase interacted so well with us that we applauded him at the end of the meal. A couple people in our party asked for substitutions which Jase and the chef accommodated without any issues. The manager, Brenda came to the table to welcome us and our waiter, Jase gave us just the right amount of attention throughout the meal. The owner of the inn, Greg also helped with every aspect of the meal service and made us feel very welcome! At the end of the meal, the Chef came out to greet us which was a very special treat for us. He also received a round of applause from us because our taste buds were still doing a happy dance! Now, let's talk about the food. EPIC. 10 stars again! My husband and I shared two appetizers: the Brussels sprouts with pancetta and blue cheese which were the best roasted Brussels sprouts we've ever had (and that's saying a lot because we get it everywhere we go), and the bacon wrapped dates. Those 2 apps were so tasty, I could have ordered them all over again for my meal! But hubby and I ordered the hangar steak with asparagus, roasted potatoes and a wonderful sauce of some sort. My description is unfortunate because I'm not doing it justice. The flavors were outstanding! Our friends ordered a variety of menu items, but a couple that got rave reviews were the mussels and the lamb. My friends and I want to thank the exceptional staff of the Causeway for blessing us with a memorable meal and delightful experience that we hope to recreate the next time we're in the area!

Great quality food and fun cocktails pulled us in, not just seafood fare which was common in the area. So glad this was the first stop on our honeymoon.

Do you recommend the dining room, or art gallery for dinner?

The art gallery is great for an intimate dinner because it is quieter and you are surrounded by amazing art. The dining room has spectacular water views and is a more social space.

Needless to say, we got seated right away. They seem to prefer reservations though. My favorite thing? The small rotating menu. It's nice to see them try to do only a few dishes really well. The service was good. The menu had some solid options. The food? We had the steak chili, shrimp allá vodka and the pizza with pumpkin. All the dishes were very delicious. But really, the shrimp allá vodka sauce was actually so good. We did not want the dish to end. Why the 4 stars? Our $27 shrimp dish only had 4 small shrimp in it. While it was very delicious we called the shrimp "gold" because there were so few and they were so good that it was like finding gold in your plate when the bite had it in it. The other piece, I read this in a review below, but decided to try it for myself. There seems to be a problem with their ventilation system in the kitchen. We were sitting at our table and suddenly it got Smokey but not like visible smoke but you felt it in your eyes. One of my eyes started watering and burning and then my son said his eyes were hurting even though I didn't say anything about it. It seems odd, but definitely impacted our dining experience. This place is a great little gem and we will come back when a new menu is around to try all the new in season dishes.

This place intrigued me with its ever rotating menu as they use what we fresh ingredients that may be available at the time. My husband had the birria tacos and I had the risotto. Portions were large and reasonably priced. It really is a tiny saloon that probably can't fit more than 20 people or so unless you sat at the bar, but it was phenomenal. I had a Black Manhattan cocktail, supposedly differing from an ordinary Manhattan by use of a different kind of bitters (Amaro) and "filthy cherries." These seemed like basic good quality maraschinos to me (3); nothing "filthy" about them. Nevertheless it was good, fruity, and ample strength. The appetizer selection was small and heavy on bread-based items. (No free table bread was available - grrrr.) Most didn't appeal but the Roasted Garlic did, served with bread (2 kinds: a toasted crostini and a fresh crusty sourdough). The garlic was a whole head, sliced open for easy access and presented on a very hot plate, sweet and mellow from long slow roasting, and served with a choice of cheeses (molten blue, brie, whipped feta, or chèvre) - I chose chèvre and it was very good and a generous portion. A very simple dish not often encountered in restaurants. In retrospect this was the best part of the meal. I felt a little rushed at times and impatient at other times. It took a very long time to get the appetizer so I had nothing to dilute the effects of the strong cocktail. But then more than once I was asked about my entree before I was ready; once when ordering the appetizer and another time soon after I received it and hadn't made up my mind yet. I held my ground and told them I wasn't quite ready, and they accepted that and I took my time eating. There was an eclectic selection of wines by the glass. I had an interesting rosé from Slovenia. My entree was a roasted fish filet (halibut I think? It's no longer listed on the menu) served over a tomato-based sauce. This sauce was richly scented and complex and the plate was attractively garnished with micro greens. But the fish was on the small side and the flavor was monotonous - no discernible browning on the top. The other component, probably an herby cucumber-yogurt sauce resembling raita, which should have been a cool complement to the hot tomato broth, instead was melting unattractively and dispersing into it. Perhaps most disappointing, there was nothing else to this dish. It needed a starch or something (rice, boiled potatoes, or even more of those very good breads from the appetizer - wish I had saved some.) So it's good I got the appetizer first, or I would have left rather hungry. Desserts were also very limited and most didn't appeal. I decided on the Clafouti, which is a baked tart, thicker and heavier than flan, with fruit (black cherries) It was way too hot, didn't have enough fruit, and ice cream would be a far better choice than the amorphous blob of whipped cream it was served with. I should have skipped dessert. It was so boring. As for ambience: it's a crowded, noisy place but in a pleasing way. Very small, and I had reserved one of the 6 seats at the bar (I was dining solo). It's whimsically decorated, like with the grape-covered nude statue holding a candle. There was attractive artwork on the walls, some of which I believe was for sale. I did detect smoky odors coming from the kitchen that other reviewers have noted but I consider that a positive thing, not a negative. So come here if you wish. Check it out and form your own opinion. As for me, I wasn't sufficiently impressed and wouldn't return.

All the tables were filled as was the bar with the exception of the table we were given. I lovely high top table. I realized at that moment I was sitting in what was Keri's Cafe Miranda reimagined and felt very sentimental and hoped that our meal would be as wonderful as the many many years of meals I had there. The wine and drinks were perfect. Our food arrived HOT which was a delight as it seems recently most food I have had out has come to the table Luke warm at best. My burger was perfectly cooked, and flavorful, the caramelized onions were nice, the fries were perfectly crisp and my beet salad was delicious as was the goat cheese "dip" yummy. I do miss Cafe Miranda, the restaurant formerly in this location. After being brought to my table and offered water I was ignored for what seemed like a long time. But after that the service got better. My waiter once he arrived was fine and seemed to know the offerings pretty well. On the starters menu there was a Crudo, described as "local fresh catch. Chef's selection." I asked and it was scallop. Sounded good. It was, but I wasn't crazy about the texture of the raw scallops. (I've had crudo before but never scallop.) But I did like the heat intensity from the hot pepper rings, the sweetness from the mandarin orange slices, the pronounced flavor of roasted garlic, and the oily dressing with two kinds of sesame seeds. Biggest flaw: way too small for the price of $20. I had a cocktail from their small specialties section, "No Cap(irinha)": Cachaca (a Brazilian rum made from sugarcane), blueberry Cheong (a Korean style fruit syrup), and lime. It was refreshing, but very weak on alcohol, served in an inappropriate glass reminiscent of a cafeteria tumbler, and the ice was all wrong (too-small pieces that quickly diluted the already weak drink). Rather than take a chance on another disappointing cocktail my second drink was a glass of wine from the small but ample selection of by the glass. As for the other alcoholic beverages: the beer selection was very small, and the only hard cider was the undrinkable Woodchuck. My entree was also scallops. Described as "local scallops, mushroom, bacon risotto, parmesan." The scallops were tasty, heavily seared on one side and cooked medium on the other. The risotto was very good, without the heaviness of excess cream or cheese found in many risottos, and the rice grains were distinct and al dente, not mushy at all. The bacon may have been good in moderation, but this wasn't moderate. The large smoky bits totally overwhelmed the delicate scallops, making it seem like the bacon was the main event, the scallops merely an afterthought. But my biggest criticism is the portion: the 4 medium-large scallops were in no way adequate, and the price for what I got was insane. My rating is based not just on what I ate but what was on the menu and on other diners' plates. The menu was very small. Yes it is a tiny restaurant (just 9 tables and maybe 6 seats at the semicircular bar), but the former Cafe Miranda in the same location had a huge menu so it must be possible. I'm glad I didn't order the steak. I overheard the waiter tell another diner it was just the steak and a sauce and did they want to order sides (6 sides are offered at $10 apiece). That's ridiculous. An entree should be complete, with creative sides included as decided by the chef. For a steak, maybe some onion rings and grilled broccolini, for example? Add 2 sides at $10 apiece and your steak entree is now costing a whopping $60! And stealing some furtive glances when it arrived at my neighbor's table, it didn't look that special. I could be wrong though. I also saw a burger delivered. A 6 oz patty, with caramelized onion, black garlic mayo, brioche bun, and fries or salad. That's "or", not "and." 6 oz burger for a whopping $26! Um, no. No table bread! Grrr. This annoys me maybe more than it should. Sadly it's getting more common. Want bread? Order it for $6. No thanks. Going with the cafeteria theme (the aforementioned cheap-looking cocktail glasses) the silverware was provided wrapped in a single basic paper napkin, and the table was unadorned with tablecloth. Completely inappropriate for the level of restaurant I think they are striving for. Dessert menu was pretty small too. But I figured I couldn't go wrong with flourless chocolate cake. And there was nothing wrong with it, just unimpressive, the standard presentation of a slab of cake, a few raspberries and mint leaves, and an amorphous blob of whipped cream on top. Yawn. My water glass, after being filled regularly for the first 30 minutes (I was very thirsty), was left empty for the rest of the evening. Until after I had already paid and was about to leave, the water person came by and asked if I wanted water. Rather late, and a strange question. Why ask? Just pour!

Holy goodness!! Worth the hype!!…read more This was on my list of places to try and wow I am so happy we finally did! As soon as we walked in, i knew it would be great as you can see them working in the kitchen. I always think that shows how good the food will be if you can see them work. The food was fantastic, the donut was insane!! All of it was so tasty I can't wait to start driving up and taking everyone I know. I know I will love it through the seasons too! Everything is so fresh. The space is small but quaint so I would recommend getting a reservation! They do have a sweet bar you can sit at and look into the kitchen too. I loved the market, you can actually go and grab something to drink in there and have it for your table. The market also has quality cooking ingredients you can buy and cute nic nacs too!

What a hidden gem in a town i've never visited before. I think the space is very cozy, with an open kitchen and wood tables and bar. The cute little market in back is wonderful to check out before or after your meal. The staff is absolutely wonderful. So kind and making recommendations along with answering any questions you have. I think for the price of food you are really getting a great deal. Everything is made fresh in house from scratch which you can watch when you sit at the bar which i did. Watching orange juice wbu freshly squeezed and the donuts being put together from absolute scratch. The burger is definitely a great choice, I couldn't get over the house cut fries and the alna sauce was wonderful to dip them in. The burger was juicy and delicious and paired perfectly with the Volcanique red they had on the menu. My mother ordered the grits and eggs, this dish was cooked perfectly and had a house made salsa verde. The side of sourdough is a must get for shareable side. The house made jam was spectacular - they make every sauce and dip and spread in house and you can really tell. It elevates the meal so much. The drinks were a bit overpriced in my opinion but as someone who lives in Portland i wasn't surprised they were priced that way. The standout from the meal was definitely the sour dough donut. This was fried fresh to order and we had the seasonal flavor that was lime glazed and it was absolutely breathtaking! The crispy exterior with the fluffy inside was perfection - you have to order this. I definitely will need to come and check out dinner here. Highly recommend making the trek out!

Have returned twice since then. As the menu is small and hasn't changed since my first visit, the charm has worn off. I usually share the roast half chicken plus 2-3 sides. The meal was absolutely flavorful on my first visit but not so much the last visit in Dec 2025. Maybe it was a bad night? I thought the flavors fell flat and service was not as attentive. I was celebrating the holidays by treating friends to dinner and had to wave down someone twice to order rounds of drinks. I will give any establishment 20 stars if they are paying attention as to whether your glass is half empty. For me, the food can be excellent or blah but excellent service can make or break a restaurant.

First off the food was delicious. The question is what are you willing to ignore to enjoy it?…read moreStarting with cleanliness -- spider webs above our table and food stains on the walls. (See pics) Hospitality is completely absent. No one made eye contact for a prolonged period of time after we entered. Yes, it is a very small space, but there was one waiter and one bartender. Never received set ups. We rooted around in an exposed cabinet and snagged our own. And they don't carry any sodas whatsoever. So... enjoy the food but pack your patience and perhaps don't look too hard at the walls of the dining room.
