Needless to say, we got seated right away. They seem to prefer reservations though. My favorite thing? The small rotating menu. It's nice to see them try to do only a few dishes really well. The service was good. The menu had some solid options. The food? We had the steak chili, shrimp allá vodka and the pizza with pumpkin. All the dishes were very delicious. But really, the shrimp allá vodka sauce was actually so good. We did not want the dish to end. Why the 4 stars? Our $27 shrimp dish only had 4 small shrimp in it. While it was very delicious we called the shrimp "gold" because there were so few and they were so good that it was like finding gold in your plate when the bite had it in it. The other piece, I read this in a review below, but decided to try it for myself. There seems to be a problem with their ventilation system in the kitchen. We were sitting at our table and suddenly it got Smokey but not like visible smoke but you felt it in your eyes. One of my eyes started watering and burning and then my son said his eyes were hurting even though I didn't say anything about it. It seems odd, but definitely impacted our dining experience. This place is a great little gem and we will come back when a new menu is around to try all the new in season dishes.

We began with salmon croquettes and carrot ginger soup-both were great but the soup was seriously out of this world-just the perfect amount of flavoring! My husband had the birria tacos and I had the risotto. Portions were large and reasonably priced. It really is a tiny saloon that probably can't fit more than 20 people or so unless you sat at the bar, but it was phenomenal. I do wish restaurants in the area offered dessert, but maybe there more of a big city thing?

The Kraken appetizer, again an old favorite, was cold and soggy. While sitting outside on a summer's evening can be pleasant, their tent is dank, dark and chill. Even the paper menus were wilted. They have heaters, why not light them? This evening at Franny's was a sad disappointment.

We were the last people in the place, due to it closing for the night, and we were given a huge portion of banana foster, with three scoops of ice cream. The creme brûlée was even better! 10/10, would return! It was a pleasant surprise, and it helped us avoid going into Rockland, like we would normally. I do miss Cafe Miranda, the restaurant formerly in this location. After being brought to my table and offered water I was ignored for what seemed like a long time. But after that the service got better. My waiter once he arrived was fine and seemed to know the offerings pretty well. On the starters menu there was a Crudo, described as "local fresh catch. Chef's selection." I asked and it was scallop. Sounded good. It was, but I wasn't crazy about the texture of the raw scallops. (I've had crudo before but never scallop.) But I did like the heat intensity from the hot pepper rings, the sweetness from the mandarin orange slices, the pronounced flavor of roasted garlic, and the oily dressing with two kinds of sesame seeds. Biggest flaw: way too small for the price of $20. I had a cocktail from their small specialties section, "No Cap(irinha)": Cachaca (a Brazilian rum made from sugarcane), blueberry Cheong (a Korean style fruit syrup), and lime. It was refreshing, but very weak on alcohol, served in an inappropriate glass reminiscent of a cafeteria tumbler, and the ice was all wrong (too-small pieces that quickly diluted the already weak drink). Rather than take a chance on another disappointing cocktail my second drink was a glass of wine from the small but ample selection of by the glass. As for the other alcoholic beverages: the beer selection was very small, and the only hard cider was the undrinkable Woodchuck. My entree was also scallops. Described as "local scallops, mushroom, bacon risotto, parmesan." The scallops were tasty, heavily seared on one side and cooked medium on the other. The risotto was very good, without the heaviness of excess cream or cheese found in many risottos, and the rice grains were distinct and al dente, not mushy at all. The bacon may have been good in moderation, but this wasn't moderate. The large smoky bits totally overwhelmed the delicate scallops, making it seem like the bacon was the main event, the scallops merely an afterthought. But my biggest criticism is the portion: the 4 medium-large scallops were in no way adequate, and the price for what I got was insane. My rating is based not just on what I ate but what was on the menu and on other diners' plates. The menu was very small. Yes it is a tiny restaurant (just 9 tables and maybe 6 seats at the semicircular bar), but the former Cafe Miranda in the same location had a huge menu so it must be possible. I'm glad I didn't order the steak. I overheard the waiter tell another diner it was just the steak and a sauce and did they want to order sides (6 sides are offered at $10 apiece). That's ridiculous. An entree should be complete, with creative sides included as decided by the chef. For a steak, maybe some onion rings and grilled broccolini, for example? Add 2 sides at $10 apiece and your steak entree is now costing a whopping $60! And stealing some furtive glances when it arrived at my neighbor's table, it didn't look that special. I could be wrong though. I also saw a burger delivered. A 6 oz patty, with caramelized onion, black garlic mayo, brioche bun, and fries or salad. That's "or", not "and." 6 oz burger for a whopping $26! Um, no. No table bread! Grrr. This annoys me maybe more than it should. Sadly it's getting more common. Want bread? Order it for $6. No thanks. Going with the cafeteria theme (the aforementioned cheap-looking cocktail glasses) the silverware was provided wrapped in a single basic paper napkin, and the table was unadorned with tablecloth. Completely inappropriate for the level of restaurant I think they are striving for. Dessert menu was pretty small too. But I figured I couldn't go wrong with flourless chocolate cake. And there was nothing wrong with it, just unimpressive, the standard presentation of a slab of cake, a few raspberries and mint leaves, and an amorphous blob of whipped cream on top. Yawn. My water glass, after being filled regularly for the first 30 minutes (I was very thirsty), was left empty for the rest of the evening. Until after I had already paid and was about to leave, the water person came by and asked if I wanted water. Rather late, and a strange question. Why ask? Just pour!

Flavorful haddock with feta tomato and lemon on top, perfectly sautéed zucchini and yellow squash, and a rice and tomato combo that was absolutely shovel in mouth inducing. Other dishes that were described as out of this world included the atuffed haddock, fried clams, chicken tenders, and don't get me started on the FRITES!! Paired with a can sauvignon that was an excellent selection by the bar team, I was in heaven and had to be rolled away from the table. Absolute perfection in every bite!!

Everything about The Alna Store is so special--it's possibly the best meal you will ever have, while inside the most unpretentious building, an actual store that sells produce and specialty gift items. A place like this should be experienced as a planned outing, not just a restaurant that's happened upon. A James Beard Award winning restaurant inside what could have been my grandparents' barn, along with beautifully mismatched silverware and repurposed green wine bottle water glasses--what could be more Maine? On both visits we were so excited that we arrived about a half hour early for our reservation, yet were welcomed and promptly seated. The service is excellent, and the food is next level out of this world. I couldn't help but want the person I was with to try what I was eating so we could try to parse out the complex flavors in each dish. Is that a tomato base? Chives? Ginger? Cucumber? We enjoyed every bite of every plate. Both times we started with the gazpacho, at dinner it was served with a grilled/toaster piece of sourdough focaccia. Fantastic! My dinner entree was the grilled squash with roasted peppers and delicious, flavorful breadcrumbs, and fresh mint leaves--it was our favorite plate of the meal. We both had desserts (pictured), the cake looked impressive as it tasted, yet the berry crisp was our favorite. Everything at dinner was so fabulous that I had to return, this time for brunch. We started with a couple of cups of our favorite Tandem coffee, again the gazpacho, and this time tried the ratatouille. Again, the flavors! How do they do it? Everything looked and tasted as if it was prepared with care. One more observation, how mistakes are handled: the person I had brunch with was vegan and the ratatouille came out with cheese. Our server promptly recognized the error, brought a remade dish, and at the end of the meal brought a complimentary vegan sorbet and said that "mistakes are celebrated", which we appreciated. Because of all of the much deserved accolades The Alna Store has recently received (James Beard, New York Times), the parking lot was full of out of state plates from Massachusetts, Maryland, Oregon, so be sure to make a reservation, and enjoy the people watching while you eat possibly the best meal of your life. We are so fortunate to live within an hour of this very special place. A solid five stars, please don't change a thing. I can't wait to try the fall menu!

Two words: Bloody. Mary. Without a doubt, the Causeway's Bloody is in the Top 10 best I have ever had - potentially even the Top 5, if I'm being honest. While their House Bloody checks all the delicious standards, their Build Your Own menu is the stuff dreams are made of. Garlic stuffed olives? Sure. Crispy Bacon skewer? Why not. Housemade mini-crabcake? Yes please! Fresh oyster served on the half-shell? Seems like it would be rude not to! Oh, and let's not forget the beer-back. All in all, one of the best, most unique Bloodys I've found on the East Coast. Pair your Bloody with their housemade Salmon Pie (it sounds weird, I know... but trust me here) and you're guaranteed to enjoy a brunch experience that's second to none. We split two different kinds of wings, which we found to be pretty solid. For mains we had the haddock tacos, which were nicely fried, crispy, and had a pleasant sauce and slaw. My father ordered a burger and fries, and he very much enjoyed his. We appreciated the handcut (rather than frozen) fries. For dessert we ordered banana foster and creme brûlée. We were the last people in the place, due to it closing for the night, and we were given a huge portion of banana foster, with three scoops of ice cream. The creme brûlée was even better! 10/10, would return! It was a pleasant surprise, and it helped us avoid going into Rockland, like we would normally. Highly recommend giving it a shot for a spot to enjoy a drink. Their beer selection was impressive.

The bread service and butter variations were very delicious and unexpected. We started with drinks which were both amazing and unique. Starters we tried the tuna and the wagyu. Tuna was beautifully presented and delicious. The wagyu was interesting. The menu presented it as sliced with horseradish, but it came as a pickled tartare. Luckily, we are ok with giving it a try. It was quite tart but the marbled wagyu and flavors were nice together. For our main course, the Trout (side of mushrooms)& halibut. The trout was deboned and delicious. Perfectly charred, light and airy meet. My husband liked the mushroom, but I felt they were quite wet. Too much oil or butter. In my opinion, it completely overwhelmed the mushrooms and didn't leave any natural taste. I felt the same about the halibut. The fish was cooked to perfection. Light and delicate. Nice piece of fish. However it was so buttery that's all I could taste. The potato cake and zucchini were very nice, but still lots of broth dominating the other flavors. Overall, fun atmosphere.
