We ate here for lunch. Their shrimp basket featured fried shrimp, nicely fried and served with crisp fries. it's nice to dine on freshly caught and cooked shrimp. The sheltered outdoor space, where we ate, were picnic tables. There is an outdoor patio and also an indoor dining area in the bar. Service was a bit slow, but the food was served appropriately warm. Since we stayed at the nearby East Wind Inn, this eatery was within a short walk from us. Prices were reasonable, making this a good place for lunch. read more

Happy Clam is about as far off the beaten path as you can get in Downeast Maine. And though it is the only restaurant for miles, I expect that many tourists would pass on it based on the appearance, that of the clichéd "dive bar." But those in the know - tourists and locals alike - ensure that it is always busy, and it seems especially popular with bikers. Most of the rowdiest patrons choose the outdoor pavilion out back. I believe it serves the same menu but it's much louder, especially when there's live music or karaoke. Not my thing so I sit inside. The food is a peculiar mix of typical bar food, New England seafood, and German. Yes, German. Schnitzel, Rinder Rolladen, Goulash, Spaetzle, you'll find all of these. I've tried the Schnitzel, which I got with red cabbage and spaetzle. It was a generous portion and pretty decent. Authentic? Perhaps not. The "German Potato Salad" was regular mayonnaise-based with chopped pickles and bacon. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it's not German Potato Salad. On another occasion I tried the lobster reuben which has lobster instead of corned beef. Good but rather messy to eat from the melted cheese and Thousand Island dressing along with the plentiful lobster. Fries were ok, not outstanding. On a third occasion I tried the crab cakes which was a mistake and I should have known better. Salty, too much Old Bay, lots of filler. Gourmet or "fine dining" this is not. But definitely worth a visit or two or three. But be aware: the "dive bar" atmosphere also extends to the ambience and cleanliness - or lack thereof. The men's room smelled exactly as you might imagine, and the soap and paper towels had both run out. The ice bucket, curiously, was on the customer side of the bar, 6 inches from where I was sitting, separated by a flimsy plexiglass shield. So I advise you to stick to beer or wine - avoid the cocktails. Other than that, it has a fun kitchy feel to it, 70s TV posters, photos of sports celebreties and the like, and too much patriotic decor for my liking. But my waitress was friendly, I've enjoyed my visits, didn't get sick, and would probably go back. read more

To be honest, my table mates out-ordered me, since I stuck to the haddock with a maine crab cake on top and veggies on the side. Far to healthy a choice. Order the lobster mac appetizer and the schnitzel and wash it down with dark beer. You'll be a lot happier. Afterwards, we went to the outback for its final night of karaoke. Delicious coastside pub. German food and chowder was awesome. They have a great selection of beers on tap. The patio has a casual vibe that is comfortable. Love that they allow dogs there too. The staff went out of their way to be kind to our pups. One thing that really stands out are their people. For a place called the happy clam in coastal Maine the one thing I would expect is the clam chowder to be good. So I ordered a bowl even though it was 14 dollars. It was the tiniest possible bowl. It was firmly in cup territory. My 1 yr old has bigger bowls in his teeny baby kitchen playset. I assume the "cup" must have been roughly shot glass sized. As far as the taste of the actual soup, it was literally like someone took Campbells soup and halfheartedly added some clams from Gritty Clam Suppliers International to it. Overly salty, absolutely not creamy at all, watery and runny, I've never had worse clam chowder. I assume the clam chowder available at an airport or a mall food court in say, Idaho might be worse. Maybe if Taco Bell made a clam chowder it might be worse. But who knows those places could surprise you. The cook came over and was like hey how's it going so I was like hey man I'm sorry but these soups are really bad but the fries are excellent in a sort of awkward self-effacing open faced compliment sandwich but his eyes glazed over and he (even more awkwardly) left without saying anything and chatted with our waitress for a bit. As an aside this is only the second time in my life I have ever complained at a restaurant about the food so I was extremely full of anxiety but proud of myself for speaking my truth. I asked our waitress for the check and wouldn't you know it, that 14 dollar "bowl" of translucent sludge was on the bill along with our 15 dollar "bowl" of the worlds only lobster bisque made almost entirely from genuine lobster tank water. I am a coward so I didn't quibble I paid my 40 plus dollars for two horrific bites of soup and some decent fries and slunk out. But I tipped exactly 15 percent instead of my usual 20. It was a bit chilly but we ate on the deck because the inside seemed a wee bit tight for my claustrophobia. I ordered the schnitzel in the starters/apps section because I was worried the entree size would be too big. Turns out the app size was pretty big too but hubs helped me out! My husband and I were staying at the East Wind Inn in Tenants Harbor the weekend of September 16th for 2 nights and since the Pub at the Inn was closed we ventured to the Happy Clam both nights we were there. We have always been happy with the food here in past visits - especially the Schnitzel ....and we were not disappointed this time around either. We have always found the food to be of good quality and the people are friendly and courteous. My only criticism this time around is both nights we felt extremely rushed even though people continued to come in and sit down to dine we felt pressured to eat and get out........We will definitely be back but hope to not be so rushed in the future and allowed to relax a bit more. read more

We've been here twice as a family and we've loved everything we've tried both times. Seafood, steak, and German food is cooked flawlessly every time. It's hard to offer so many things and also nail the cooking every time, but, the happy clam does it! We've tried the schnitzel, German pancakes, spaetzle and the beef rouladen. Even their roasted veggie sides are incredible. All so delicious. I can't wait to return and try all the German items on the menu. The spaetzle is probably my favorite. We were hungry and decided to take a chance and headed to The Happy Clam. We were not disappointed. I got the mixed seafood basked and my boyfriend got the jaeger schnitzel. The seafood was perfectly breaded and fried. Not too much batter. Clams were whole belly and did not disappoint. Haddock, scallops and shrimp were great too. We decided to try this local hot spot for my husband's b-day last night. After waiting a full 35 minutes we left! We were seated right away and the waitress came over within 5 minutes, but after mocking my husband for speaking German(! it's a German restaurant!) she left in a huff, came back and plopped our non-alcoholic drinks down, complained about her night and left. We were avoided after that.The waitress refused to take our dinner order! She seated others, bustled around but totally avoided looking in our direction. Way to make us very UNhappy clams! This is a hard review to write, our experience was lack luster, but the food was quite good. We arrived at 5:15ish for an early dinner. We found a table and waited, after a bit we were brought menus and then we waited again for at the very least a drink order. When the waitress came to take the drink order, she also took our dinner order, stating how busy they were. Our drinks and food arrived in an appropriate time. All of us truly enjoyed our food, potato pancakes and steamers to start, followed by schnitzel for the adults and fettuccini alfredo for the young adult. When we were clearly done with dinner I asked for some containers to take home left overs, we then waited, after 15 minutes I found the waitress and said "we would like to leave", granted I can be strong in my delivery but really felt i wasn't too much. Our waitress then brought our containers, and proceeded to yell at me in the middle of the dining room. Her behavior was in my son's words "over the top". Our bill was $105+/-, I was prepared to leave my typical 20% even with the poor service, I know waitresses work hard. After being yelled at I chose to leave her $5. As I left I attempted to speak with the owner, the irate waitress came from nowhere and again began yelling, we simply walked to the car. Let me say, I have waitressed and bartended my way through 3 college degrees, I know how demanding and exhausting it can be, I have had irate customers, never once would I have even thought about treating a customer that way. In closing, the food is good! The service is a crap shoot?! Whether or not we will return remains to be seen. read more
