A small, relaxed bar. Good for grabbing a quick drink to kill time and just relax. It's cash only! There was only one guy at the bar to make drinks, take orders, and serve food but he did a fine job. I got the dry cider and it was adequate but has a strange sour after taste. For food had the tomato soup with grilled cheese. It was delicious and ofc the two pair each other well. My boyfriend got the chicken rice plate. The chicken was a bit dry and overall plate a bit bland but he poured some of my tomato soup on it to add flavor to the chicken. A perfect three. We used to come here for the grilled cheese sandwich. And the rosemary fries. The cheap beer didn't hurt. It was always a good place to hang with friends. I came back on a Tuesday afternoon for the rosemary fries. And the cheap beer. The fries were better in memory, although they weren't bad. It's just that I won't be coming back again for the fries unless I'm with a crowd. The $7 portion is too big for one person. The $3 PBR was just right. It's still a clean little dive. I was a bit confused with my bar experience at the Cellar. A mix between a pirate's cove with rock covered walls, "Yar, the Cellar" and a wine cellar, yeah it is really downstairs. The vibe was pretty chill, almost like being in a cafe with a young hip crowd of art school kids as well as the opposite of what may have been ex-theater leaguers ( very dramatic convos going on there). The drinks weren't particular impressive or particularly expensive. A favorite "Whiskey and Ginger" was $5.00 served in a small juice glass disappointing to the eye, but not to the taste with half of it being alcohol. Yohoho! Just like the location (between Central and Harvard) my overall experience, was in between pleasant and dull. Even though, the place was packed (we must have been breaking some fire hazard safety code), we found a seat relatively fast. Fries smelled delicious with herb season on what appeared to be a McDonalds style cut. The Cellar might be the right location for a week night drink. For a Fri and Sa seemed rather dull and could have more luck either in Central or Harvard. read more

My sister and I got an early dinner here before going to the Regattabar for a show the first week of May. Even though I live close by, I've never eaten at The Cellar. Aside from it being CASH ONLY (warning! warning!), we were really pleased. Yes, we met early (at 5pm) but the bartender was sort of stand off-ish and there wasn't any table service aside from them placing the meal in front of us. We had to order at the bar and the bartender made a point of not coming to us. We ordered a beer each. We shared the mussels, the beet salad, and the fries. Soooo yummy. The mussels didn't come with any bread, so we were glad to have the fries. Everything was delicious and we ate every last bit. I'm normally a big ketchup + fries type of girl, and we barely touched the ketchup in favor of the broth left after eating the mussels. The mussels were also really large and flavorful...I've had much, much worse at nearby seafood restaurants. I liked that the beet salad had both red and yellow beets. Girls thinking of coming here on a date: THERE IS NO MIRROR IN THE BATHROOM. There is literally a toilet in the bathroom and then you wash your hands in the sink beside the bar. It's generally hard to impress me with a burger (even the "great" ones are just overpriced beef patties on bread with some greasy toppings - nothing special). But the Cellar Burger is famous for a reason. Throw some rosemary truffle fries on the side and you have near perfection on a plate. The basement has a fun atmosphere and the bartender is fantastic. It's great for drinks or a casual dinner. Get there early or on a weeknight if you prefer a quieter venue. As others have noted, it gets crowded on weekends. read more

As I write this review, I have tears in my eyes.....for alas, it's a few days too late. This much loved restaurant is now CLOSED due to a dispute with the establishment's landlord. So I write this review to respect what once was. One of my favorite staples in Central Square, this place had the best Cellar burgers with truffle fries. The burger was perfectly cooked with a plump and juicy handmade patty featuring locally raised beef. Vermont cheddar and aioli sauce dripped from underneath its slightly toasted bun and arugula added just the perfect texture to round it out. Dare you hunger for more you could order a side of their Housemade Tots, which resembled mini potato croquettes more than your cafeteria variety. Complementing this wonderful meal, one could always count on The Cellar's modest but satisfying beer selection on tap. I shall miss you my dear friend. Thanks for the memories! read more

My first visit to the Cellar was for a friend's birthday. Ashley R. on yelp, to be honest. You should check out her reviews. I think normally I would have passed over the Cellar for the rest of my life had she not picked it for her birthday get-together. She has a lot of friends. They all showed up. So, the Cellar was pretty packed. And even so, it was a great time. We ordered fries. We talked. The bartender was "jovial", which is probably the only time I've used that word in a sentence. Despite it being a smaller little hangout, it was a great time, and it opened our eyes to the Cellar. Fast forward to last night, where I met up with a few friends (including Emma D., whose reviews you oughta check out) and had Thursday night drinks and dinner. Excited to get some Hoegaarden on tap, we entered to find it was not nearly as packed as it was for Ashley's birthday. The same bartender was working. We suspected that he might be the owner. My friends food had already arrived, and damn if it didn't look really tasty. Which was sort of surprising. I hadn't eaten the last time, (except for the amazing rosemary fries), so I didn't have any idea what to expect. I got the chicken croquettes and a cuban sandwich. I also ordered Hoegaardens. The bartender was supremely friendly, minding me to "watch for seeds" in my beer. How funny. My food arrived, and the chicken croquettes were soo good. They were like crispy little balls of chicken pot pie. The cuban was also very good, but also sort of felt like a reuben? A cuban reuben? Didn't matter, it was still heavenly. A+++ would buy again. My friend Sam also had a cuban sandwich, and she asked for a box. The bartender brought over a chinese food box and asked if "he could bend it". She's like sure, and he bent the sandwich into the chinese box. It was actually really really funny, and only added to the charm of the place. Interestingly, I told the bartender that I was going to yelp him. He hadn't heard about yelp. So if you're reading this, hi, I gave you five stars, because I love the Cellar. Awful experience with a rude and drunken owner at the Cellar My girlfriend and I went to get a what we thought would be a casual dinner at the Cellar tonight. Despite the restaurant being quiet, we easily waited for 2 min or so before even being greeted by someone. Finally, the owner (who had clearly been drinking) of the restaurant took us to our table, gave us the wrong menu (brunch instead of dinner) and then had us waiting another 10 minutes or so before even asking if we needed water or more time with the menu. Meanwhile, two older guests who had arrived after us had their orders taken very quickly by the drunken owner. After waiting another ~10 min, the owner came back, muttered something rude under her breath and then apologized for being "understaffed" saying that some one would take our order soon. She then returned to the bar and continued drinking her martini. We thought about leaving the restaurant but to be honest, we were just confused as to what was going on. So regretfully, we waited another 10 minutes and then just stared at the owner to get her attention. She made eye contact with us and then walked over and said "so that you'll stop staring at me, I guess I'll take your order." It's safe to say that this establishment discriminates against some of its customers, either by race or age -- we immediately left the restaurant offended and discriminated against. This is the place you want to be going if you're not going there yet. Perfect mini burgers, delicious aioli potatos - and their Rosemary Truffle fries -delicious. They are almost always busy during the winter. I usually think going with one person is the best way to experience this place since it's in the basement of "The Garden at the Cellar" It reminded me of some pubs I went to in London - you order at the bar, it's small and dark and simple, (just a few tables, just a few chairs, a small bar, bathroom sink on the outside of the bathrooms) but the food. Oh god, the food. Affordable, delicious food done right. This is a mature gastropub, not sloppy. It's classy in it's down-to-earth-ness and always picks me up during the winter when I need a burger done right - applewood smoked bacon, arugula, cheddar - aioli, and all on a brioche bun. Lately, I've been splitting the miniburgers and an order of truffle fries with Russ or a close friend. Perfect amount of food. This place is a find. Perfect for after work food and drinks with a friend or a great place to go when getting to know someone a little better. It's comfortable enough to even meet up with your boss (which I've done before) and the best part - it's far enough from Central and Harvard that it's not completely overwhelmed with people. It gets crowded, but it would be much worse if more people could get to it. Also, on a recent trip I noticed they were doing $1 Oysters and $1 Deviled Eggs and 4$ (each)Mini Burgers. THIS IS A DISCRIMINATORY ESTABLISHMENT. "So that you'll stop staring at me, I guess I'll take your order" - The Owner of The Cellar This was by far the worst restaurant experience I have had in living in Cambridge for 2.5 years. The owner of The Cellar "served" us... but we ended up walking out, insulted, before we could even order drinks. I have never, in my two and half years as a graduate student at Harvard and MIT and living in Cambridge felt SO discriminated against, for my race (I am an Asian-American woman) or for my age (late 20s). I cannot tell which it was, but I cannot understand otherwise why we were treated so poorly. Looking for a good, quick dinner, I suggested to my boyfriend that we try The Cellar, a place I'd been many times before and enjoyed. My boyfriend and I walked in ahead of another couple, and were seated. Oddly, I noticed that the woman, the owner as she told us, proceeded to first take the order of the older, white couple who came in after us and were seated after us. I thought that was odd, but decided to ignore it. We waited another ten minutes without being helped. The owner finally walked over then and told us she was short staffed, but not in a professional or apologetic way. Fine, I thought, that is no big deal! But she went back to drinking (she was drinking pretty heavily) and muttered something under her breath about us. After waiting for a few minutes, my boyfriend and I had decided what we wanted to order. I was trying to make eye contact with the owner to take our order, but she was completely inattentive. Her friend then came over to her and muttered under her breath that we were looking at her, so the owner came over, with a judging look on her face, oozing disrespect, and said - LITERALLY VERBATIM - "So that you'll stop staring at me, I guess I'll take your order." I could not believe what she had just said - it was so rude and completely uncalled for. I responded, "ma'am, there is no need to talk like that to a patron, and yes I was trying to catch your eye because we were ready to order." I cannot explain if her discriminatory behavior was race-based or age-based, but I have never EVER felt so insulted in my life in a restaurant. I will never go back to The Cellar and urge anyone who lives in Cambridge or visits to respect the racial and age diversity of this beautiful town and to not support this horrible management with your business. OH CELLAR WHY ARE YOU SO UNRELIABLE? Some things on your menu are killer. Others (despite sounding delicious) are must-miss. Sorry, Cellar. I'd love to give you 4 stars for your burger and truffle fries, but now I've seen your dark side: your lobster tempura, pulled pork sandwich, and bacon-wrapped dates. Sorry, Cellar. We could have had a thing. Truffle Fries. Cellar Burger. Grilled cheese and tomato soup. If you order these three items (and these three items only) the Cellar's food easily earns it 4.5 stars. If you pay attention to things like service (or don't like playing the 'where did the bartender-who-is-also-our-waiter go?' game), the cellar is more of a 2.5-star restaurant. The ambiance is okay-cozy, but can be noisy and hipster-full on Fridays and Saturdays. Lobster tempura: yuck. So much fried, so little lobster. 1 star. Pulled pork sandwich: WHY? So dry, so unspirited. Anyplace that sells gnocchi probably shouldn't try its hand at a pulled pork sandwich. My bad for ordering. Bacon wrapped dates: okay. Kinda mushy. Not nearly as good as bacon-wrapped dates CAN be. 2.5 stars. If you can be DISCIPLINED and ONLY ORDER the burger, fries, and grilled cheese (some kinds of discipline provide instant gratification), you will not be disappointed. It was definitely a tiny locale, not that I mind smaller confined spaces. Their restroom was kinda of a new experience. There was a door for women's toilet and one for the men's toilet. Went here for the first time last Friday with a friend around 5:30 pm. I really enjoyed this place! We sat at the bar. You get the bar menu there which has some sandwiches on it that the regular menu doesn't. For starters, we got the Warmed Olives and Bacon Wrapped Dates with Goat Cheese and Curried Apple Hash. Let's just say that normally, I'm only keen on the black olives that come out of cans. But I decided to give these a go. Not bad! The Bacon Wrapped Dates...oh emm gee. SO good. I wasn't such a fan of the apple hash, but I can see how it would taste good in conjunction with the dates. My friend and I ended up getting the same thing to eat- it was bitterly cold that day and we had a hard time resisting the Vermont Cheddar Sandwich and Tomato Soup. So glad I got it- delicious!! Honestly- some of the best tomato soup I've ever had! It's not every day that you walk away talking about the tomato soup and not the sandwich! Cool bar downstairs - I think it's been prettied up since my last visit (c. June '06) - they've moved into gastro-pub territory. The food was damn good - best burger I've had in forever, and the guy behind the bar was cool (albeit with some odd taste in music) The only minus point is that it's noisy. Very noisy. Ahh, the infamous rosemary truffle fries. Of course they were delicious. What isn't delicious with rosemary and truffle oil? They were, however, a bit greasy for my taste... So how was the rest of the meal, you might ask? Well, let's begin with the ambiance. It IS a cellar, in a way that I really like, but it's definitely not fancy. Brick walls, low wood-beamed ceiling, and TINY. Not the place to come with large groups. There were five of us and we lucked into a bar table. We were there at 7pm on a Monday, so it was not crowded. By the time we left at 9, things had picked up quite a bit. There was no table service, order food and drinks at the bar. The bar tender was friendly enough but he took his sweet time taking orders and pouring beers. THE BEERS! So cheap. Decent selection. ($4 Sierra Nevada makes me happy). OK, fine, I'll talk about the food. Four of the five of us had the tomato soup which comes with a Vermont Cheddar grilled cheese sandwich. The soup was rich and flavorful and came in a lovely white terrine. The meal was out before I'd even finished paying the bartender (CASH ONLY) and the grilled cheese sandwich could definitely have used a few more minutes; the cheese was just barely melted and the bread wasn't toasty yet. One of us had the falafel sandwich, which she quite enjoyed. All in all, great for bar food, but not the best I've had. I'll probably be back, but it's not on my top list. read more

I've been to the bar downstairs at The Cellar multiple times. I've never been especially wowed by the bar, since it serves mainly beer and I'm more of a cocktail drinker. The cash-only aspect is also a real problem for me. But the upstairs dining area takes credit cards!! With this new knowlege, I sat at the bar upstairs for the first time this weekend. It turns out that this is a great dinner-alone-at-the-bar place that's been hiding under my nose all this time! (My ongoing search . . . ) Even if the bar and restaurant aren't full of people, you don't feel conspicuous sitting there by yourself thanks to the ceiling-to-floor supporting columns that separate the bar stools into groups of 3 or so. The columns, which might get in the way of larger parties, makes seating for one at the bar much more private. A shy alone-diner can easily feel comfortable by taking a seat next to one of the columns. The bartender was friendly but not overbearing. She made a killer creamy chocolate martini -- the best part is the hunk of chocolate waiting at the bottom of your glass to be savored once you've polished the liquid off. I sampled the rosemary truffle fries, which are like a sophisticated version of the standard bar snack. They look just like regular fries, so every time I had another bite, I was surprised at the creatively unusual flavor. (This is a rare phenomenon -- usually my mouth stops tasting about half way through a meal. This phenomenon also happens with my mom's soy sauce and garlic chicken wings.) I can't wait to go back for a full dinner. read more

I'm amazed that I've gone this long knowing about The Cellar without writing about it. I'm going to remedy that, right now. I suppose that The Cellar could have negative connotations for me. The first time I went there was with who turned out to be a bone-fide alcoholic for a roommate. This was his favorite place, and having worked in the food and drink industry in Boston for years, he knew every bartender in the Cambridge area. We had gone here when I first looked at the apartment I would end up occupying for the next two months before non-payment of utilities, smoking indoors, and drinking of all my alcohol forced me to flee to Somerville (and I never looked back). Anyway, even though I never went back to living in Cambridgeport, I came back to The Cellar. Numerous times, in fact. The beer selection is OK, but the food is what I came to rave about, specifically those magical rosemary truffle fries. I've also had their burgers and grilled cheese (with Vermont sharp cheddar) and have never been disappointed by my choices. Very solid pub food that's just a bit fancier. The bathrooms are kinda funny. The sink is outside the bathrooms, which is just for the toilet (and lots of graffiti). However, maybe this is the way it should be; you can show everyone that yes, you do wash your hands after using the restroom, or it's a big red flag to everyone else to stay away from you because you DON'T wash your hands afterwards, you dirty monkey. Or maybe it's some elaborate social experiment designed to test and maybe influence people to wash their hands in accordance with social norms. I don't know. I'm spending way too much time talking about a restaurant bathroom, guys. Help. So long story short, there are lots of great restaurants in the Central/Harvard area, and The Cellar is one of my very favorites. It's casual, the food is delicious, the staff is friendly, and it's a good place to be. Just make sure you get here at a reasonable time on the weekends or Thursday nights, 'cause everyone is thinking the same thing and you might have to elbow your way around to get things done. read more

By far my favorite bar in town! 3 main reasons: Greg, Quentin and the chill vibe. Greg is the bartender from Sunday to Thursday, and Quentin is there Fri and Sat. They are extremelly kind and always in a good humor. It's the kind of place where you can go by yourself, sit by the bar and end up having a great unexpected night. Sadly, I did not check Yelp before heading to the Cellar, or rather the former Garden at the Cellar. It is now open, but a shell of its former self. Basic menu, bland food and a waitress (upstairs) who seemed to be "mailing it in." Even the burger and truffle fries weren't as good - average at best. It was also pretty empty on a night when all the spots down the street had waits. Last summer I had one of the best dishes I had all summer here (a local, seasonal salad), so I'm really sad for the loss of this formerly great local foodie spot! read more

I ordered the truffle fries - because you have to, the braised short rib, a Makers neat and a coke - $22. A steal! The truffle fries were a big heaping portion, they showed up with ketchup and when I asked the bar tender for something...else...*insert nebulous questioning face* he brought me garlic aoli....it was perfect perfect perfect. The short rib came in a dish with orzo, mushrooms, and some other goodies as well as a heaping portion of jus. OOOh, tastiness. If I hadn't been sharing it with sweetie, it would certainly have been enough for a full meal even though they were just appetizers. Quick review: Not a fan at all of the food I tried. The burger and truffle fries may as well have come from McDonald's or Burger King. It's obviously been prepared a bit nicer and if you got it from McD's or BK you'd be impressed, but having your meat taste like a fast food burger, super greasy, is not something I enjoy. I love the Cellar. And not just because it's a mere 3 minute walk from my apartment. First, the food. Every item I've ordered or tasted here, I've loved. The truffle french fries, tater totes, bacon wrapped dates (oh my god the bacon wrapped dates. amazing), burgers, roasted duck grilled flatbread.... Trust me, it's all good. Second, the drinks. I'm a sucker for an interesting cocktail list, and while theirs is short, it's always good. They don't have it posted online, but last time I went, I had two specialty cocktails- one lavender and one rose. They were both unique and delicious. I've also ordered a few too many Old Fashioneds here (my drink of choice), and they made a great one every time. They have plenty of beer on tap and wine to choose from. I wanted to give this place 5 stars based on food and drink, but I do have a bit of a problem with it. It's a long explanation, so bear with me: They have both a bar menu and a restaurant menu- I prefer the items on the bar menu. The Cellar is divided into an upstairs (The Cellar) and a downstairs (The Garden at the Cellar). The upstairs has a restaurant vibe to it, with a restaurant bar. If you sit upstairs at a table, you can only order from the restaurant menu. If you sit upstairs at the bar, you can order from both menus. The downstairs is a cash-only bar, where you order food from the bar menu at the bar, seat yourself, and don't have a waitress. The whole situation seems overly complicated. I understand that they are trying to create a "dive bar vibe" downstairs and a "restaurant vibe" upstairs, but it's actually really annoying. My solution: sit at the bar upstairs, order from either menu, and be able to pay with a credit card. If they made downstairs have waitress service and take credit cards, this would easily be 5 stars in my book. read more

Whispers of amazing burgers brought me here. But the real gem: the rosemary truffle fries. Oh reeeeeeally... Yeah so dinner at the Garden can put you back 2.5 hrs of waiting. Thankfully, you can chill downstairs where seating is first come first serve and standing while eating is okay too. Definitely a great atmosphere: smells of the kitchen wafting through, decent beer, and extraordinarily friendly bar staff (literally smiling. always). But to be honest, I was really expecting more out of the burger/fries combo. Unfortunately, the grass fed beef had a dense, dry texture (I ordered med rare, a must!), the brioche was also dry, and the aged cheddar not too flavorful. The fries were f-in amazing as were the tater "tots", but they stole the show over the burger. However, when you think on it, $10 for that deal is pretty slick for the combo. I went here again the other night with a small group of friends and really enjoyed myself. The place is fairly dark, not too loud, and usually not packed beyond what is reasonable. The other people there were nice to us, talking to us and being friendly. The same thing went for the people standing around outside. Drinks were about $4-6 and tasty, although small. I would recommend getting Hoegaarden or Stella Artois for around $4 in a big glass. The bartender is really nice, and service is prompt. I would recommend The Cellar if you are winding down for the night, because they have a late last call and the atmosphere is fairly relaxed. read more

Despite living in Central Sq for over a year, last weekend was my first visit to the Cellar. I can't believe what I've been missing! Four of us tried to sit upstairs but the wait at 7pm was an hour at least, (no reservations) so we went downstairs instead where you can order the same food without having table service. I am not picky about what I eat, but I am picky about what I praise. And this food was good. The homemade tater tots are a must (essentially deep fried balls of mashed potatoes...divine) and the tomato soup (good texture, nice and thick, with a drizzle of evoo on top)-grilled cheese combo was delicious and perfect with a glass of red on a cool fall evening. Emily's flatbread pizza was tasty and Nat's burger was delicious, hand packed, and simple (though a tad over cooked for my taste). Oh. And the fries. No words. And to top it off, the price was utterly reasonable. 20 bucks for appetizer, entree, wine. I will definitely be returning here for the simple menu, good food and chill atmosphere. (That is to say, I like the sort of dungeonesque feel...if you like more upscale, the cellar is probably not for you, though the garden upstairs might be.) read more

It can get a bit crowded here during peak Friday and Saturday night hours, but what decent place isn't crowded during rush hour? All I have to say about the Cellar is: TOMATO SOUP AND GRILLED CHEESE SPECIAL. And truffle tater tots. And delicious hella crispy beers. It's bar food, but it's done so very very well. I love this underground(literally) bar. Great beer, and always welcoming and friendly. Greg us a wonderfully friendly bartender. The food is also excellent. This quickly became my regular go-to bar. read more

The Cellar Food & Drink - The remains of the day... - New American Near Me - Cambridge, Massachusetts

Another quality place in Cambridge to settle in with a beer and some conversation. First off -- it looks like there's two ways to go at The Cellar -- you got your upstairs more fancified dining area or the downstairs bar area. You can still get the new and supposedly improved food at the downstairs so this is the only part of the joint I've been too -- and no I haven't tried their food. It looks good though -- even if it is served on those pretentious rectangle plates. The beer selection is pretty decent and at a very good price and the bartender was quite the nice guy even if he seemed a little hippy and out of place. Though it is kind of sad that a bar of any kind should only have one kind of single-malt. But hey, we can let such things pass. It's definitely a place I'll always be happy stopping in to on cold walks home from Harvard Sq. when the People's Republik or Plough and Stars is too busy. Next time I'll try the food and check out the wine list. read more
