Talulla's in Cambridge is totally worth the hype! There's two-hour parking on Concord Avenue and Huron Avenue. This cute and cozy restaurant has dim lighting for a romantic vibe and has about 10-12 tables. Upon arrival, we were greeted at the door and asked if we wanted to check our coats. We went during Valentine's Day week and tried the four-course prefixed menu for $95. We also ordered some extra dishes like the sourdough with rosemary butter and the oysters with pearls. I got the fresh pond mocktail, and it was amazing! I would never think to pair orange, cinnamon, and the other flavors together, but it was incredible. It's definitely my favorite mocktail. I ordered the mushroom soup, and it was unreal - coconut flavor with crispy scallions on top. The chestnut pappardelle was a thick flat egg pasta that was creamy and cheesy with kale and parsnips. I started to feel full, but I kept going to the main course. The salmon was paired with a sweet potato, tiny bits of puffed rice, and squash bisque. The salmon had perfect flaky and crispy skin and was cooked just right. I ended this fantastic meal with a hot peppermint tea and the pavlova. The pavlova was a winter citrus and cranberry flavor that was a bit too tart and sour for me, but I had a bite of the chocolate cake and that was tastier.The service was wonderful too. Service 4.5/5 Was sharing plates with my bf, and the restaurant very kindly (without us having to ask) split each course into two plates for us ! We also were given the most delicious little pastries with our check - a very nice touch Small attitude ("that's all") when we ordered on the "light side"- not sure if most people order the full tasting Food 4/5 We started off with the homemade sourdough and focaccia - the sourdough was ok, but the foccacia was amazing ! I could have eaten an entire plate of it. Next we shared the campanelle pasta with oxtail and braised cabbage- super unique and delicious flavor profile For the main- we split the farm chicken- the chicken skin was cooked to crispy perfection. Scallop is very fresh Chilled lobster 5/5 lobster is very fresh and great flavor Carmelle 5/5 great flavor pasta is cooked perfectly Rabbit loin 7/5 the flavors were so savory. Contemporary dining in Huron Village, the menu changes with the seasons and they aim to use local ingredients only. I'll start off by saying their wines were wonderful - I tried a few reds, apologies I can't name them for you, but they were all lovely. Crisp, not sweet, dry - these were my preferences and they made a few great recommendations. We ordered a handful of dishes and shared. A cod dish in a broth, a crudo dish with citrus & radishes, a pasta in a white sauce, and ended it with vanilla ice cream. Portion size is on the smaller scale, but the quality of each dish makes up for that, flavors were fresh and subtle and clean. Service was nice. The space is quite intimate, there were about 8-10 tables set up, all spaced out well, so seating/reservations are limited in that sense. The artwork is very cool as well, from local painter Brittany Loar (look her up!). Apps are around $15-$20, entrees from $25-$40. Price of wine depends on the bottle. read more

It's clear that's this is a really nice place to dine. The outdoor table setup was good, with enough spacing between diners to allow for more privacy. I was impressed with the burrata cheese mixed with beets and mints and local berries. The presentation was simple yet beautiful. The beets were super fresh, and the burrata was nicely textured. The swordfish with tapenade and miso flavor was good. I query whether the swordfish was too well-cooked... seemed a tad stiff. The miso glaze made the fish a bit too sweet, and there was much more tapenade than necessary. The quinoa that lay underneath was extremely well flavored with an interesting tone that I couldn't quite identify. The pole beans were yummy too, but a tad oily. The puree was creamy. The pork with mole was good too, yet once again a tad overcooked. The mole was nice to begin with, but there after repeated bites it got to be a bit strong. The vegetable accompaniment was really delicious and wish I had more of it. The fall or autumn sundae was really nicely flavored and really felt like Fall. There was an oat flavor, an apple flavor, and a star anise flavor. Accompanied by some cider cream, everything blended really well. My main concern though was the caramel. It became rock hard as it lined the inside of the glass cup. In fact, there was a large mass of caramel at the bottom of the cup that wasn't integrated with the rest of the ice cream. Was I supposed to eat that? Or was it just for flavor and/or decoration? I really wasn't sure. Also the oat tuile was way hard. If I weren't careful it would have been a tooth breaker! All in all a really good restaurant. The chefs can certainly execute with finesse. I do wish that there was a bit more of a wow factor, something that would have really packed a punch. On some level the restaurant is a victim of its own reputation and success and pedigree ... expectations were high and so a lot was expected. This is a small neighborhood restaurant - a location hosted by previous restaurants. The ambiance is minimal and no fuss. The staff were friendly. Once seated, we waited 30 minutes which would be fine if I had a cocktail. When I flagged our server down, he told us they were struggling with the outdoor seating. All I wanted was communication and a cocktail. We ordered the tasting menu with the wine pairing. The food was inconsistent- some was outstanding and others not do much. One of the wine pairings was undrinkable and the waiter insinuated that we had unsophisticated palates and maybe so, but don't tell us that. The most egregious plating was the dessert. How does a chef serve a complete and utter mess? Bottom line - maybe if I lived in the neighborhood, I would come but certainly not a destination visit. read more

We enjoyed the tasting menu here for a birthday celebration, and we very much appreciated the creativity and adventurousness evident in the menu, which changes weekly. The wine pairings were also quite diverse and tasty. The service was impeccable, with the staff working as a team and making sure everyone was readily taken care of. The space is well appointed and perfectly situated for dining al fresco (although it was too hot for us to do so in July). I would caution diners against getting the tasting menu unless you are very adventurous. I consider myself adventurous, but I found the main course (rabbit) a bit gamey and not appetizing. The server mentioned that the following week, filet mignon would be the main course -- so it just depends on when you go, I suppose. Went here for date night with my girlfriend and fellow yelper! We really enjoyed each course of our meal. The bread and butter was delicious - a very fancy combination of flavors for the butter. Our pesto rigatoni was creamy and delicious. And the scallops paired great with the bed of lentils they were served on. To top it off we had a lovely sundae for desert. The atmosphere is nice and cozy, with an excellent wait staff. I MUST say however, the portions are very small. I mean look at the rigatoni - my God that was really just a snack. And we paid $25 a pop for it. The bread was $7!! This, my friends, is keeping this place from 5 star category. Very expensive for honestly a small amount of food. The best way I can describe these dishes is that all of them could benefit from editing. Is like they want to do too much and end up with a confusing plate. A bit expensive for the results. I got the tasting menu and some other dishes to try. The Farmer's Cheese was very mild, like a ricotta or whipped cottage. What I loved here was the crackers but everything else was meh. Tuna Crudo (tasting menu) - refreshing and the grapefruit flavor came through. Nothing especial. Bucatini - it was well seasoned and had great flavors. The pasta was a bit overcooked. Ravioli (tasting menu) - I'm an adventurous eater, but these black cocoa raviolis were a bit too much. It was difficult to identify flavors but overall something was off. The Venison was perfectly cooked, as well as the vegetables. There was no wow factor on the flavors but it was very well executed. The Braised Short Rib was one of my favorites. It was fall-off-the-bone tender and very well seasoned. The rest of the dish was interesting with the wild rice and pumpkin puree - it didn't entirely go well together. The boiled potatoes (besides being bland and simple) were unnecessary. The dessert (apple upside-down cake) was moist and yummy, as well as the ice cream. The frozen yogurt was so frozen I couldn't cut it, and I also think wasn't needed. read more

On our second time here, we brought our friend to celebrate his birthday and just like our first time which was before COVID, Talulla continues to hit its mark! Run by a husband and wife team with the restaurant named after their daughter, it's no surprise they take pride and care in their passion for this restaurant as it's apparent in the dishes, service and décor. The waitstaff were remarkable with their level of service, professionalism and guidance of the menu. For example, we wanted a bottle of red with a softer body but the taste was a bit sour for us and they assured after inspection there was no contamination. They suggested another red which we found more palatable and enjoyable and consumed in full. The fresh bread with the accompanying scallion butter shouldn't be forgone - we saved some for a later entrée too to sop up the sauce. The fluke crudo, chilled spaghetti with crab and bucatini had their own character building up to the stars of the show - the bavette steak and Berkshire pork loin. The steak was cooked to a perfect rare to medium rare with a crisp crust and pork loin was one of those dishes that needs to be slowly and thoroughly savored - a slight crust meeting a juicy and tender pinkish white center. The molé negro was a great complementary addition to the pork as it rounded out the flavors decadently. A must-try drink is the Oaxacan old fashion which multiple were ordered and everyone in the table agreed this was the drink of choice. This meal was something special. My partner and I ordered al la carte and split two appetizers (pumpkin soup was outstanding), a pasta dish, the chicken entree and donuts for dessert. My partner rarely gushes over "fancy" food but raved about the chicken for the rest of the night. The service was stellar and our server even gave us a complimentary drink since we were celebrating our anniversary. For such a highly rated restaurant I found the cost to be quite reasonable and appreciate that the owners value their employees by including the tip in the bill. All in all, we found it to be an excellent value and will return as their menus continue to change with the seasons. read more

Date night at Talulla was a lovely experience. The space is cozy yet minimal and bright, the staff very friendly. We started off with some focaccia and home made sourdough bread, served with rosemary honey butter. Both were delicious, but I think some olive oil or some savory butter would have been a better complement. We each ordered the rigatoni with kale pesto and fresh cheese. They were topped with some crispy bread crumbs which were a delight. Only complaint is that it was a very small portion for the price ($27). As a main we shared the scallops, which came served with delicious lentils. We finished off with the winter sundae, a sophisticated take on your classic diner sundae. While everything was delicious, I don't think the price is justified. For $27 I would expect a few more rigatoni than a mere 12. I get that it might be about the flavors, but this isn't an experiential kitchen restaurant, feed your clients. read more

We had a phenemonal meal at Talulla - one of our only meals out during COVID. We happened to go on one of the coldest nights of the year, but the mini-greenhouse was cozy enough that we could still eat with our coats off. We were also running like 30 minutes early, but the staff still seated us right away (much appreciated in the cold). I ordered a Hug of War for my cocktail - hot cider with whiskey and clove - which was the perfect accompaniment on a frigid night. We split the bread and honey butter to start, which was a great appetizer portion for two. For entrees, we split the cocoa pappardelle and braised short rib. The only critique I have is that both meals were a BIT salty, but nothing that stopped us from cleaning our plates. For dessert, we again shared the panna cotta which was delicious and a great night cap portion size for two. You would think that perfect service was impossible given the situation, including being seated outdoors in our own mini-greenhouse, but Tallula still pulled it off. Our waitress checked in just the right amount and offered great recommendations. Overall, it's extremely difficult to dine safely during COVID. The few restaurants that offer individual, safe seating like greenhouses usually charge and a hefty fee, or a sky-high minimum, and I'd wager they aren't as nice as what Talulla has. Talulla has created the perfect environment for a safe dinner out during COVID! The mini green houses were so special and private. They include a small space heater and are only used for one seating per night so they can be properly sanitized and aerated. The servers wear masks of course and can hand you your food from outside of the greenhouse. Our server was lovely and accommodating of my mushroom allergy and offered additional vegetarian options, and the food was great! All of the vegetables and two pastas were vegetarian. They even had a delicious mocktail that was a beautiful balance of chamomile, coconut, and lime. The sourdough was delicious: perfectly toasty on the outside and soft and warm on the inside with honey butter, and my husband enjoyed the fall vegetable soup. I got the broccoli and farro to start and the pumpkin caneloni. Portions were pretty large and I couldn't finish. My husband also really liked the duck and sausage cassoulet. This will definitely be a regular spot from now on! We are so excited to be able to have date night again after not eating out for nearly 8 months. read more

We recently had a private event at Talulla (as happy return customers), and were absolutely BLOWN away at how exceptional the event was. The Talulla team was so helpful, helping us craft a customized menu, select wines for dinner, think through logistics of having a mini-cocktail hour before the dinner began. They were also incredibly responsive throughout the process, even when I had more than a few questions, which I appreciated so much given how crazy life is these days. The event was also perfect, day of. The food was truly exquisite -- the scallop crudo, the duck, and the neri pasta were particular highlights. Cocktails were all incredible, and I loved the wine options they helped us select as well. The team was so kind and helpful day of - felt like we were all among friends. This is a charming place with excellent food. My husband and I and our three adult sons went for Mothers' Day and between all of us we tried 3/4 of the entrees (all except the steak) as well as one of the pastas and the kale greek salad. All were uniformly delicious and well-prepared. Creative, but not so creative as to be weird and not actually taste good. One reviewer here noted the veg entree was very small; that must have changed as there was plenty for my son (and it was physically the largest item we ordered). The overall experience was really pleasant from start to finish. We arrived a bit early but they were very nice and went out of their way to make us comfortable while we waited for the table to finish up. We ate inside (the outdoor huts look adorable but only seat two). It is a very small place but tables are well spaced so we did not feel like we were on top of our fellow diners. Service was perfect and very pleasant. My son and I tried the Sazerac cocktail, which was also perfect. I didn't lose my mind over the bread and butter like some other reviewers, but we did eat every last crumb. Where our food comes from matters. I'm glad when restaurants support local farmers and producers (the beer they serve is local too) and I try to support these types of businesses. But the experience has to be good to make it worth my hard earned dollars. I'm very happy to be able in good faith to give this cozy, lovely little business five stars and I hope to be back soon.
