What I discovered upon checking into my room just now
    Stephen K.

I have stayed here numerous times in the past several years and have noticed a considerable and alarming deterioration in service here. For a four-star luxury "premium" hotel (the prices are very high here), this place offers amateur service, extremely apparent lack of care & attention, and nonsensical policies that result in a strongly subpar customer experience. If this were a Holiday Inn or cheap hotel I would let it fly, but this is easily the most expensive hotel in Cambridge and thus completely unacceptable to be held to such low standards. Do not waste your money here. My working theory is that due to the serious lack of competition for high-end hotels in the area, The Charles has relaxed their employee trainings and found ways to cut corners while continuing to charge extremely and unjustifiably high rates for the convenience and proximity to Harvard. I will give the hotel props: it is easily the nicest facility around among hotels. But the pretty frills on the outside are dated and clearly a relic of the past. The concierge service here is unprofessional and unmotivated to hold themselves to anowhere near an acceptable standard for the price range.

Spent over 1 hour to get no results!

Really bad experience! My flight was cancelled by the airline on short notice, which prevented me from canceling within 48 hours. I called Expedia and the hotel directly to figure out what options I had. Expedia said they could try to get a refund or change my reservation, but the hotel needed to approve it. They contacted the hotel, but the hotel did not allow us to apply for a refund or make changes. If the flight had not been cancelled, I wouldn't need to make any changes to my travel plan. Please be understanding! Also, I asked if we could keep our reservation but arrive one day late. They did not allow this either. The person who answered my call said that if we are not there on the reservation date, the reservation will be cancelled, even though we have already paid online.

Lovely lobby with great work spaces!

We spent a week at the Charles and we absolutely loved it! The service is fabulous, staff are the best. The property, rooms, and decor are beautiful. You cannot beat the location, we will be back for certain.

    Breakfast

Hotel charged me for a mini bar item that I didn't consume. It wasn't there when we checked into the room and I explained that when I checked out. Breakfast at Henrietta's was subpar. The eggs used for my omelette didn't taste like real eggs but like the mixed egg substitute. The hotel itself is nicely appointed. Staff not very friendly.

    Nicely decorated room, super comfy.

We decided to stay at the Charles after we learned it was going to be the site of my too many years to mention high school reunion. To say the least, the function was very nicely done. We could have used a few more bartenders, but the hotel had no way of knowing what a thirsty bunch we would be. Other than the bar bottleneck, the service was fantastic:from the way the bellman and valet swooped right in as soon as our car stopped, through the quick checkin, to the concierge that directed us to lunch, all were friendly efficient and professional! The room itself was very comfortable, stylishly decorated and had a great view of the hotel's outdoor tree lighting ceremony. What more could you ask for? So glad I overcame my high-school insecurities and visited this perfectly located local institution.

I'm just happy to have gotten to stay here. C booked it for our first night in Boston. I had no idea what to expect, or where in the world we were staying, but was pleasantly surprised by the digs when we got there. We do some unique traveling. Mainly in the way that we actually take trips. We leave town with only the first night stay booked and wing it from there. We do this for spontaneity, to always keep things fresh and new, and to avoid losing money in some cases because of flight delays or changed plans. This last trip was a nine day haul around the Northeast Coast. This one was great and I have lots to share, so buckle up! ;) Night one: Excellent check in. Easy valet experience as you can just leave your vehicle on the curb and they come get it later at some point. Martha Stewart's flunky designed the place, but don't hold that against them. It's quite comfy and cozy. I loved the room accommodations. The glass box overlooking the busy Cambridge City street is really cool. The windows even open so that you can get some fresh air in the room or even purge some "compromised" room air out if needed. I wanted to sleep with the window open but the city was too loud for me to endure while sleeping. Shower is nice but all of the bars are deceiving. I thought that we may have a multiple shower head experience, it was only a dual head junt.... All of the bars are just to let the things slide around. It's nice though. It's a bit quirky with only one ice machine in the basement and none on each floor. But down in the basement is a plethora of oddities and things to look at. There is a great conference room that you can rent and shit yourself in if you want. They have a good coffee maker down there too. No free breakfast. That's ok though. Come have a stay. You won't be left disappointed I believe. Staff were super courteous to us. We left something in the car after we valet, and they went and retrieved it for us with no gripes at all. Came and stay a while.... You will be pleased. '25 - 111/111

An Uber ride to the Fenway area where we had a scheduled event took 15 minutes. Extremely walkable area but if you aren't keen on walking 15-20 minutes to Central Square or 25-30 minutes to Harvard Square, choosing a hotel closer to a T stop might be a better fit. Our room was ready when we arrived earlier than the hotel's usual 3pm check-in time. Spacious with two queen beds, both clean & comfortable. Large window lets in those gorgeous New England views. Spotless bathroom, strong shower pressure. Hotel guests will never want for snacks; there's a Trader Joe's across the parking lot & a small market in the lobby which also sells toiletries you may have traveled without. Friendly front desk employees added to our already excellent stay!

The shampoo, conditioner and lotions were (I think) Gilchrest and Soames -- if I have the wrong brand, know they were high quality and smelled wonderful. I did not eat at the restaurant while I was there, but colleagues of mine did and had positive things to say. I did avail myself of Door Dash a few times; very smooth ordering, as the hotel has a system set up for drop off and pick up. Was there this past winter during a particularly cold time and puh-lenty of snow; the front of the hotel was cleared and safe. A few suggestions: 1. If you can get a corner room, I HIGHLY recommend it for the light and openness. 2. The elevator is quite small -- I did fine, even with quite a large suitcase; just be aware for how many bags you bring or if you are a bit claustrophobic. 3. When I was there this past February, some construction was being done on the hotel. I was on the 5th floor and I heard nothing; the lobby, however, could be pretty noisy during the day. Again, not a reason not to stay -- and the hotel communicated well about the hours of the work. But if you plan to meet people there (for work or fun), you may wish to call in advance about the status of the construction. That aside, I definitely plan to make this my go-to hotel when I return to Boston.

The walkway entrance is sticky and wobbly. The sitting area is probably the only nice part about it and even then, it only has pleather/bonded leather couch. The other hairs looked flattened. The reception is off to the corner by the elevator. Sometimes, the staff is talking on the phone. And the elevator scares me as it makes weird noises when it moves. It's expired for a few months. It also smells. The room is very small. The bed is supposed to be a queen but it's more like a full, and on metal rails. There's no bench or couch in the room to drop off the luggage. However, there is one shelf in a small closet. The room is also supposed to be upgraded and renovated. But it's already dated. Some of the items like ventilation does not work. There's no headboard, just wooden slates. The floor is lament, the bathroom is on par with motel quality. Also, the room is noisy at night and I have been having trouble sleeping.
