We found this cafe right off Hwy 35 at the Barnum exit 3 years' ago through Yelp and have been stopping there on our way to and from Up North ever since. The cozy interior and covered outdoor porch are a perfect place to enjoy our favorite sandwich on their menu: turkey with avocado & alfalfa sprouts on homemade WW bread. Counter service makes for a quick turnaround, but it's tempting to linger. A bonus if you have a dog: Walk and water your dog out back. read more

This is such a cute little cafe! We passed this place a couple of months ago but didn't have time to stop. Well we are out this way again and so happy we made the stop! We ordered coffees(coconut milk latte DELICIOUS! And a americano that offered great espresso flavor). For lunch we got a Teriyaki Chicken Wrap and a Turkey Bacon Cranberry Panini! Borscht was delicious - little chunks of beef very tender and the broth was perfect, not too salty. My husband loved his sandwich as well - turkey, bacon, and cranberry jam. There were a variety of vegetarian choices here, too. We picked up a bag of coffee beans from a local roaster before we left. Heading from MSP up to Duluth, I was surprised to find this charming place in Barnum (pop. 630). It is a small place but has two porches and even more seating in the basement. The options were pretty varied, including veg and GF options. It did take a little while to get our food, since a large party was in front of us. But all the food was fresh and tasty. My mom and I loved our salads, which were quite generous. (My mom took half of hers home; I am a good eater.) My husband said his BLT was excellent, and the bacon was crisp and fatty. Driving from Duluth to Minneapolis and this was a perfect place to stop for lunch. Fresh, healthy and delicious sandwiches, salads and pastries/cookies. Really good drinks too - we enjoyed our strawberry frappe and our spiced chai latte with almond milk. Our family of 5 -- ranging from teenager to 80-something grandpa -- loved their food! Staff was friendly, food came out promptly. We sat inside in cute cafe setting although there is an outside patio deck as well. Definitely recommend! read more

I have gotten a brown sugar latte from there twice and have fallen in love. i love all the flavor options they have for coffee. this is a great stop when going from the cities to the north shore. i got a 7 layer bar the last time i went and it was just okay, wouldn't get again. their sandwiches all sound good though. they have live music every friday. read more

Total disinterested in any kind of customer service. Given a teaspoon for my soup and not able to find anyone to get me a soup spoon. They were too busy chatting away in back. Wanted butter for my bread and again no one was around to ask them for it. We stopped on our way to the Twin Cities from the Boundary Waters for a light lunch. We ordered beef stew, a BLT, a latte and spice chai latte with coconut milk to drink, the latter a trial. Everything arrived in good time, the stew piping hot and the BLT freshly toasted. Both were delicious. The latte was good and hot. I thought my chai latte was too sweet- not sure if that's the syrup or the coconut milk. Great spot worth a stop! read more

Driving by today and this place looked great on Yelp. 100% right on. Nice looking place from the outside and the inside was super clean and tidy. We ordered based on the owners suggestion my wife had the the turkey bacon cranberry on ciabatta bread and hat it paninied (sp)? With a cup of vegetable soup. I had a chicken Cesar wrap. We both had hot coffee drinks. Mocha and their special chocolate cherry and then they had a chocolate cupcake with mocha frosting that we split. Everything was top notch. Even though the service could be faster, the Chickadee provides a warm environment and good food. The bathroom is very home-like and fancy, and they provided a comfortable place downstairs and on the main floor. They give you a good amount of fries for $2, and their lemon bars & cookies are quite tasty. My favorite is the turkey and sprouts sandwich with salted vinegar chips w/ a cake and batter frappé. If you're looking for milky and fruity smoothies, you will not find it here which is disappointing. During the fall, their apple cider is heavenly.
