Stopped in for lunch here. It was highly recommended. Had three rolled tacos served with chips. You place your order up front. They call your number and you pick up your order. The rolled tacos were freshly made with carne asada beef. They were tasty but small. That is what you get with a tightly rolled taco that is deep fried. Must have been hungry. Ordered the chicken adobo burro with refried beans. Also served with chips and your choice or sour cream or guac. Good flavors all around. Salsa options were a bit limited. Here we were on our way, driving to San Diego, and as always, ever since I can remember, we stop in Yuma. A city that has actually a lot of history, and a lot of us don't bother or don't want to know or care to know. Today we had a long stop to enjoy a really good rolled taco at Chile Pepper's. We were told by a friend of my son, that you have to try their rolled tacos. So we entered the city of Yuma, and headed toward 24th Street, which is where this place is located. We were not disappointed. Took a while to get our order but, there were other customers ahead of us, and their rolled tacos are freshly made, and are piping hot get them. They are not served to, you get them when order number is called. Even though it is like a little restaurant on this side of the place. I didn't tell you but, if you enter one side it is strictly take out with a few tables. If you enter through the other door it's almost like a real restaurant, only you pay ahead and you pick up your order, sit down and enjoy it. As I looked around every customer was happy and enjoying their dinner. What caught my eye was this sign hanging way above on one of the walls. It read, "La Casa Gutierrez". There was this restaurant in Yuma inside this old house, it closed down, and don't know why since their food was exceptional. As we were leaving I was looking at the T-shirts they have on display for sale, and on one the shirts in nice white lettering, there was this part that said Mr. G. It made me think maybe, just maybe, this place was a Gutierrez restaurant. All I can tell you is that I will go out my just to stop here and eat, when passing through Yuma. read more

This place is a staple and favorite with the locals in Yuma. Us freeway jammers (those heading to San Diego that only stop for gas) have no idea what great places lie further in off of the drag. The Chile Pepper has super reasonably priced Mexican Food that is delicious. Seriously, for $10 you could get a burrito and two tacos; not the Taco Bell variety! This is real Carne Asada and home made tortillas with all of the fixings. The menu is extensive. Just look them up on line. It is only about 2 miles in off of the freeway just west on 24th street. Or, you can check out their sister restaurant Mr. G's on 4th Avenue that is about a mile off of the freeway. We told them our situation and the one with light hair said there's many orders waiting inside for the food and to come back tomorrow. After 30 years this place has hit rock bottom in customer service. When our meal was "delivered" to our table the girl flung the tray into my FULL large beverage. Dear Gutierrez Family, What the hell happened??? I know I've been gone for a couple of years but we always made sure a relative/friend would bring us burritos and salsa when they came our way. Like many people in Yuma County, we grew up on Chili Pepper. I believe it was every Tuesday & Thursday we had Chili Pepper burritos sold at our high school for something like $1.25/$1.50. The burritos were like crack and whatever salsa we had leftover we'd drink it. Even though the salsa made our breath so horrendous we could practically knock each other out from 6 feet away, but that is what gum is for. Yesterday we had our Chili Pepper fix delivered to us and it is such a HUGE disappointment. The burritos and salsa are practically tasteless. If I didn't know better I'd have thought I caught Covid. My dad said when he was there during what should've been the lunch rush, it was practically empty. Now I understand why. I understand prices in food and workers' pay have increased exponentially. I also know that restaurants have a very slight margin for profit. However, change the recipe for the burritos and other items but leave the salsa alone. That by itself would hide the recipe changes. It bums me out that I cannot give Chili Pepper 5 stars. I was a little disappointed with how their service was. First they didn't do my order correctly. I even wrote it down and gave it to the person to just ring up. I had a huge order 5 adults and 4 kids. When the order came we only received the kids order. Came here on my last night in the area to see what the hype was all about. The prices are super cheap so already I was super happy since there were a couple things I wanted to get to eat. What I really liked about here is that you can order single rolled tacos, so I can order as many or as little as I want. The rolled tacos were good. Super crispy outside with beef on the inside. I was a little sad they didn't come with lettuce or cheese on top since that's how I love to eat them. I ended up stealing lettuce from my friend's plate. The meal comes with beans, rice, and apparently lettuce as a garnish. I also ordered a bean and cheese burrito. The beans were so creamy it was incredible. There was a good amount of cheese to balance out the beans and all came in this tasty flour tortilla. This may be one of the best bean and cheese burritos I have had in a really long time. They give you salsa with your order, which I had to generously pour on everything. I wish the salsa wasn't so watery but it had good flavor so I guess I can't really complain about it. For dessert, I ordered some pumpkin empanadas. They come 5 to a bag. They are made by a lady that drops them off to the store. The empanadas were so good I regret not buying more. They were lightly coated in cinnamon sugar and the empanadas dough was just perfect. The service here isn't great, i asked for menu suggestions and the girl behind the counter looked really confused. She seemed to think it was and odd question. I got a beef burrito in red sauce. It was gross, i have had microwaved burittos that were better. It was a small tortilla filled with poor quality beef in red sauce. Aside from being poor quality it was also really small. I got some folded tacos, these were also small, but they tastes okay. Would i go here again for these tacos, no. The tacos were overpriced despite being decent quality. Finally, they have a order at counter, take a number, pick up your order at the counter system. The menu was confusing and even though it's a huge restaurant they pack up your food in to go containers like it's a fast food drive-through. There are no waiters or waitresses. The menu has a variety of options front tacos and breakfast burritos to tostadas and burgers. Based on the review the bean and cheese burrito and the rolled tacos are the best and what it's known for. I tried two rolled tacos and a bean and cheese burrito. First off the bean and cheese burrito was a 5/5 in my book but couldn't save the overall meal. The tortilla was phenomenal and fresh with loads of cheesy refried bean filling. I found the rolled tacos dry, bland and a bit disappointing after reading all the hype. Maybe they would have been better dipped in some of their spicy chorizo cheese dip. The chips were blah and the salsa was watery/lacked much substance (I personally prefer a chunkier salsa so this may just be my opinion). The location has plenty of parking and lots of indoor seating, the service was fast and the food came out quick. Favorite!! This is a must have when I come visit my Mom in Yuma! I worked next door at a Dr's office and I swear my blood type was starting to become their salsa! They have the simplest menu items with the best homemade flavor. I will probably sound insane telling you to order something as simple as a bean and cheese burrito but nothing compares to theirs other than my Mexican Nana! So.......I was reading an article on Thrillist.com about the best burritos in the USA. Lo and behold, there was one from Yuma at a place called Chile Pepper. They claim that their bean and cheese burrito was one of the best in the land. I'm usually not the biggest bean and cheese burrito fan, but if I get a good one, I can definitely appreciate it. I knew I had to try it. We were headed out to San Diego this morning and decided to stop here for lunch. Its a few miles off the freeway and pretty easy to get to. I walked in, placed my order for a bean and cheese burrito, 6 rolled tacos and a medium fountain drink. My total was just over $8.50. I paid the lady my money, filled my drink with Wild Cherry Pepsi and waited for my number to be called. Here is how everything was.................. Bean and Cheese Burrito- First of all, these things are only $1.89. Can't really beat the price! Like I said earlier, I'm not the biggest bean and cheese fan, but I definitely wanted to try their version since it made a "best of" burrito list. I unwrapped this thing and noticed that it was pretty small. It was more of a folded tortilla rather than a stuffed, wrapped burrito. I saw other peoples orders and they all had multiple burritos on the tray. I can see why! You really need at least two of these to fill you up. I took a bite and got to the warm, semi runny beans. The flavor was great! The cheese was nicely melted inside and the beans were smooth and tasty. It was a little messy though, and near the end, some of the burritos guts came running out onto my tray. Was it good? Yeah! Was it one of the best burritos I have ever had? Not even close. If you are a true bean and cheese burrito aficionado, you may appreciate this thing more than I did. Remember, be sure to order at least 2! Rolled Tacos- Wow! Ill start out by saying that these were the best rolled tacos I have ever had! These were definitely homemade... hand rolled and secured with a toothpick. The corn tortillas were perfectly fried, they were filled with shredded beef from tip to tip, and the overall taste was perfect. Every single bite was clean and entailed crispy/crunchy tortilla and hot, perfectly shredded beef. A lot of rolled tacos either have the meat stuffed in the middle, and leave you crunchy end pieces with no meat, and soggy middles where the meat is. Or, when you bite into some rolled tacos, the meat all comes out during one bite, leaving you with a hollowed out tortilla with nothing in it. Not these! These things were perfect! They provide a nice thin salsa to go with them and it was a perfect compliment to these rolled tubes of perfection. I gave one to my wife and regret doing so. I could have easily mowed down a dozen ($.69 cents each). Service was fast and friendly and the prices were reasonable. Next time here, I think I am going to go with 2 bean and cheese burritos and 6-8 rolled tacos. It was a damn fine meal and a place I will stop at again on my trips between SD and PHX. read more

I grew up in Yuma, so I may be biased, but I don't really care. This is, quite frankly, the greatest bean and cheese burrito that has ever existed. It's sublime in its simplicity, just refried beans and jack cheese in a homemade burrito dunked in thin, cilantro-forward salsa. But you will never be as satisfied with these ingredients ever again. If God appeared in the sky and told me that I was going to die tomorrow, I'd buy a ticket to Yuma and order two bean and cheese burritos, a quesadilla, and a Diet Coke. Then, I could die happy. Let me tell you a story, just so you know how legit this place is: Once upon a time, the local health department announced that one of the cooks at Chile Pepper tested positive for hepatitis A. My family considered the consequences and decided that, in order to beat the crowds that typically frequent the place, we'd get lunch there the next day. After all, who's going to visit a restaurant the day after an employee tests positive for a poop-related disease? Well, it turns out, the ENTIRE TOWN had the same idea. And this place is really gone downhill really $1.09 for a rolled taco and the food just really it's not as good as it used to be seems like it must be new owners and the original recipes were not handed down. Had a beef taco, bean cheese and rice burrito and carne asade burrito. Was overall mediocre. Taco was overpriced at 2.50 and was super small. Bean burrito was pretty decent. Carne asade burrito was a huge rip off, super small and not that good. Also, the salsa is probably the worse I've ever had, I don't know how they make it as watery as it is. Maybe they stew tomatoes in water until the water is red, then strain it, because that's about how watery and flavorless it tastes.
