Always a pleasant experience. The peanut butter chocolate fudge and homemade coconut ice cream are fantastic!

From the start, walking onto the porch, I was not impressed. I walk with a cane and there were no railings on the 3 high concrete stairs. When I walked in, I discovered that there were no restrooms. This is NOT a place for older people with any sort of a stair or walking problem. The ice cream was good - just good. The pricing would lead one to expect, if not world class, at least award winning taste. To be fair portion sizes were good to excellent. When asked if the maple ice cream was naturally flavored and contained real maple syrup, the snide and evasive answer was "Well, you ARE in Vermont". An excellent place to avoid. There are numerous good ice cream places in the area; if you are a Maple Smoothie fan, the Sugar Shack in Arlington (5 miles up the road) is in fact world class, and has friendly staff as well. Let me be quick to point out that I have no connection at all to Sugar Shack, other than being willing to drive an hour each way on a regular basis for their smoothies. read more

YUM!! I haven't been here in YEARS and had the pleasure of stopping in yesterday with out of town guests. What a delightful selection of homemade chocolates and delectable ice creams! We purchased some "maple malt balls", chocolate covered oreos and chocolate covered pretzel bacon bites (for my bacon-loving buddy...he spotted those as soon as we walked in). A dish of chocolate mint ice cream was wolfed down and received a hearty thumbs-up review. He's quite an ice cream connoisseur and was very impressed with his treat. There's some cool VT-centric kitsch available to purchase as well...I spotted a metal moose statue that I came very close to taking home...but there's no place for him to live at my house, unfortunately. This was another place I deemed a must stop after driving by like 10 times before we finally made our last trip by when we finally stopped in! We got chocolate chip cookie dough bites covered in chocolate, toffee caramels and some rock candy and a few pieces from the case. Everything was decent but not the best I've had. We did not get chocolates, so this review is all about the ice cream and the service. We are local to Southern Vermont, but haven't been here in a while. VERY disappointed, will NOT be recommending this place. The ice cream was just ok, not something I can't wait to get back to eat and I'm so glad because the service was HORRIBLE. I won't go back. They have odd flavors (scotch, wild honey, etc), but don't let you sample so it's hard to imagine what some of the more interesting ones may taste like. When asked what the wild honey was like they rudely responded- "like honey." This combined with the fact that we had two children and three adults made it take a while to get our order together. They were impatient and unfriendly. We ordered a one scoop cone for my 3 year old and they balanced the whole scoop on the top of the cone without pushing any down into the cavity of the cone. He had one lick and it fell off the top on to their dirty floor. It was covered in hair and dirt. They saw the whole thing but didn't offer to help in any way. I ended up having to purchase another ice cream full price without so much as an "I'm sorry that happen" or any sort of sentiment or kindness shown. Ordered the coconut chip and so did my mother. Hers was full of coconut shavings and mine had barely any in it. The whole experience was disappointing. We are small business owners and would love to be able to recommend this place to our customers who visit Vermont, but that will not be happening. read more

Love love love the Chocolate Barn! The chocolate is surely good, my favorite being their salted caramels, but the ice cream, oh the ice cream!!! They make it on site with love and fabulous ingredients. The cranberry is ethereal and the mocha chip is to die for. Other favorites are the fudge swirl and the pumpkin spice (seasonal). The owners are genuinely nice folks, and I will be back there again for sure. Update - it seems Yelp has mixed up the Chocolate Barn in Shaftsbury Vermont with one in Colorado (Aspen Chocolate Barn). The Header name says Aspen Chocolate Barn, but it lists my review for the Chocolate barn in Vermont. It also shows pictures of and inside the Vermont shop. Come on Yelp - get it right! This place is great - especially the ice cream. Great chocolate shop with some really cute crafts as well between Manchester and Bennington. The chocolates are excellent but I'm always focused on the ice cream here. Always a great flavor selection based on what is in season - yep all fresh ingredients. We were visiting for a week and stopped in. We love chocolate and they had it all. Just step inside and the smell of chocolate invites you to walk around and salivate. They make every kind. Yummy! BUt as good as the chocolates are the homemade ice cream is to die for. So creamy, you can taste the ingredients...not the sugary junk you get elsewhere. We went back 5 times while staying. LOVE the Chocolate Barn. We live in CT and make a twice yearly trip to the Barn for their very awesome chocolates and even better ice cream. Over the years we've tried most every ice cream flavor and they are all favorites, from the Maple Walnut with real maple syrup and big hunks of walnuts to the fudge swirl with rivers of delicious chocolate. The ice cream is truly to die for. Both the chocolates and ice cream are made on site and are full calorie delights to savor after a day of hiking or just a nice drive in the country. I dream of the chocolate Barn some nights. This is an amazing place just off of route 7A in Vermont that makes great Peanut Butter Fudge. We have been going here for the last 10 years, the owners have changed and so have the recipes but it is still good! This is truly a staple in southern VT and is not to be missed. My wife, son his girlfriend and I took a short drive over to Vermont today our usual candy store stop was not open. This being the case we decided to stop at The Chocolate Barn instead. I have to say we are glad we did the owners were very friendly and the chocolate was super fresh and super tasty. The truffles there are big with a great mouth feel nice smooth texture and not overly sweet not that this is an issue for me, the sweeter the better. If you are in VT on historic route 7a. A friend said we should stop for ice cream. Said the chocolate was to die for, as was their fresh strawberry made from organic berries from the farm across the street. We got a pint of each and boy were they right!!!!! THE best chocolate ice cream I have ever tasted. Rich, but not overly so. Strawberry was delicious too. If you get the chance, stop in for a cone or a pint to take home and share. Really worth the trip!! You will not regret it!!!!! I completely agree with Janet C. - the home made ice cream here is EXCEPTIONAL! I pass this way 5 days a week and it is so difficult to be dieting and drive by that tempting and luscious ice cream! The Bing cherry is the best cherry ice cream I have ever had in my life. It is loaded with big cherry halves and an occasional whole cherry! It is not overly sweet. - Same goes for the maple walnut - loaded with walnuts and real VT maple syrup- it is a wonder. Super- creamy, no ice crystals- tremendous flavor. It is how I imagine old fashioned hand churned ice cream of our grandparents generation! Yesterday, I broke the diet...and tried the chocolate. YUM!!! It has a very deep chocolate flavor and ultra creamy texture. I am a huge Ben and Jerry's fan, but this has B&J's beat!!! Folks....this place is worth a drive out of your way. I promise! The H.M. chocolates are also quite good- though a bit on the sweet side for my tastes. I am a true ice cream FREAK- year round....and now The Chocolate Barn's ice cream is my favorite new discovery! We stopped by this place after having a wonderful time at a nearby state park. This was our first visit to Vermont. We have talked to so many nice people until our visit to this place. We were inside for about 10 minutes when the man working behind the counter had the nerve to ask me to put the boxes back the way they were. Apparently my daughter had laid the boxes of chocolates globes (btw u can buy these on amazon) on their side instead of on there back. I was fuming but didn't want to create a scene in front of my kids and take away their enjoyment. I debated buying the chocolates we had but decided to get them simply because we didn't have time to find another shop. I wanted to put our basket on the counter for him to put away and say a few choice words. I decided to bite my tongue and walk away so I wouldn't tmake my kids uncomfortable. Respect your customers and appreciate their business. Otherwise do something else for a living. I would not recommend this place. read more
