Lemon Lulu Cake Raspberry Almond Hearts
    Adina S.

My roommates and I received a delivery of some baked goods from Mother Myrick's. Everything was packed up beautifully, in really nice packaging. It was really nice being able to try a local Manchester treat even out here in Boston! I've heard it's a local favorite. We had the lemon lulu cake and the raspberry almond hearts. The lemon lulu cake stayed perfectly intact and was the ideal treat for a unique birthday cake. It had just the right texture and the flavor was delicious and sweet, without the lemon being too overpowering. The raspberry almond hearts had a nice crunch and weren't too buttery. The almond flavor shined through and the raspberry was a great complement. If I'm ever back in Manchester, I hope to check this spot out in person!

Just received this delicious Christmas gift of Butter crunch and Lemon Lulu Cake!

Just received an early Christmas present of Mother Myrick's Lemon Lulu Cake and Butter Crunch. Hands-down, this is the best lemon cake and butter crunch I've ever eaten. The sweetness of the lemon cake and butter crunch is perfection. The cake's lemon flavor is super fresh marvelous! For the person who has everything, this is the gift to give!!!

First visited Mother Myrick's almost 40 years ago and were thrilled to find they were still in business. Love that this family owned business has been local since 1977. Jacki greeted us warmly and offered a sample of butter crunch. We had planned on getting ice cream and were disappointed (but only for a second) that they no longer served ice cream. There were so many other sweet treats to choose from! We settled on a mini lemon lulu and raspberry almond cookie and bought some of their famed butter crunch to go as well as Bernie Bars for gifts. 10% of sales from Bernie Bars are donated to local food pantries. And we left with a catalog!

Please don't tell my boyfriend, but I have a new love and will admit it here: it is Mother Myrick's Lemon LuLu cake. I received a gift of this beautiful little cake which arrived in a great box so that it couldn't move at all, and when I unwrapped it, the smell of lemon was intoxicating. I thought the nice thing to do would be to put it in the freezer and wait until my birthday at the end of the week (which is also when my boyfriend would be back from a long business trip), but then I decided to "just have a small piece and freeze the rest". The cake was wonderful.... one bite led to a few more, and then I needed a second little piece (which wasn't so "little"). The rest of the cake went into the freezer, but I heard it calling to me the next day; I couldn't resist taking it out and indulging once again! My boyfriend's trip came at a bad time, no cake for him :) Had I received the larger sized cake, that might not have survived all that long either, but life is short, so eat the cake right away!

Any trip to Manchester, VT. must include Mother Myrick's. Shopping at the outlets might be fun and reward you with some excellent buys, but a visit to Mother Myrick's will reward your taste buds. There are sooooo many good things to enjoy here, and frequently there are samples to help you decide. Here is my short list of MUST BUYS. Buttercrunch (milk or dark chocolate) Lemon Lulu cake Lemon Almond Brittle Rugelach None of their products are cheap, but we're talking quality here. Just make sure to buy more than you can eat on your drive home so you 'll have some left to enjoy once you get home. It's THAT good!

If you haven't been here yet, you are missing out! It's our go to dessert spot. We get a variety. Yesterday we got an opera slice, a mousse cup and a raspberry pistachio tart. We shared, the opera slice-watch the video they offer- I will guarantee it's better than you can imagine. Tonight we shared the mousse cup. Mousse in a chocolate cup, with decorative shards of chocolate sticking up. This alone merits trying as I've always had Mousse served in a bowl in a tin cup, or a container that needed to be disposed of. The edible chocolate cup is as delicious as the mousse and compliment each other exquisitely. Tomorrow night's dessert will be the raspberry pistachio mousse tart. Another winner! The tart is always baked to perfection, filled with a pistachio mousse and topped with the most perfect raspberries. It was the only one left to take a picture of. Their homemade confections are second to none! Enjoy

In fact, it was the very first stop my husband and I made because I couldn't wait to enjoy my favorite chocolates again. Unfortunately, this visit was incredibly disappointing. The first thing I noticed was the new logo and packaging. While I know businesses evolve, the new design loses the classic, elegant feel that made Krause's so special and instead looks much more generic. More importantly, the chocolates themselves are not the same. Many of the pieces are noticeably smaller than they used to be, and the chocolate tastes different. Several pieces even had bloom, which affected both their appearance and texture. I purchased a variety of chocolates, including individual pieces from the display case, chocolate bars, and peppermint patties, and every product seemed to reflect a decline in quality. To make matters worse, many of my longtime favorite pieces were no longer available. I've happily recommended Krause's for years because it consistently offered some of the best homemade chocolates in the Capital Region. This time, however, I left feeling disappointed and honestly saddened. I truly hope the owners will consider returning to the quality, recipes, and traditions that built Krause's outstanding reputation, because many longtime customers remember how exceptional their chocolates used to be.

Weather got a little hariy getting there with the slushy roads, but we made it! It's pretty remote location with no street lights, so if driving in the dark look for the signs to get there and trust your GPS. There's a large parking lot across from the entrance to the little store/shop. The shop is actually the owners old family home I belive. We arrived pretty much at closing time, but we were still welcomed warmly. We got a cheese & maple syrup tasting which was yum and informative, and the staff member that did it was really nice, I forgot her name, but see photo below. One of the cheeses has won a cheese competition, very cool. We also got to meet the owner, but she was busy getting Christmas orders together. I perused all of the cheeses I wanted and settled on 4. We got to try 2 out of the 4 from the cheese sampling. The nice lady that checked me out even gave me some nice to-go samples as well. The smoked cheese was my fav, and the sage. But I enjoyed them all. I was able to easily fly home to TX with them due to the cold weather of the season. After the tasting, we got to peruse the store. They have so much other stuff to buy in additon to cheese and maple, tons of knick-knacks and gifts and merch. We didn't get to explore the farm after since it was pitch black when we left, too bad. Enjoy!

Sadly this year I didn't get to visit New England - but lucky for me Sugarbush ships nationwide!! So I tried it out and ordered some of their syrup and my fave cheeses. Ordering online via their website was super easy. I ordered my fave dark variety of their maple syrup and 4 cheeses: horseradish cheddar, jalapeño cheddar, sharp cheddar, and Monterey Jack. Their horseradish cheddar is my absolute fave - a wonderful kick of the spicy horseradish blends so well with their rich cheddar. I really love the jalapeño cheddar too - packed full of flavor with just the right amount of kick - not overwhelming but enough to taste it. The other two were great as well - you can definitely tell their cheeses are made fresh on site - flavors are just next level compared to industrial-manufactured cheeses from the grocery store chains. And the maple syrup is also in a league of its own - nothing mass-manufactured from any grocery chain holds a candle to the rich, complex flavors and velvety texture. The syrups also last quite a long time so I'm able to keep my stocks full yearly! Since I was ordering cheese with a long way to travel, and it was still quite warm in parts of the US, their website suggested adding one of their insulated shipping boxes for an extra fee of $8. I didn't want to risk ruining my cheese so I did and all arrived in excellent condition! They pack it in extra insulated styrofoam with ice packs. So it's definitely worth it imo. Next year I'll be in Maine in October so I'll definitely be planning an extra day or two to pop over to Sugarbush on my way back out haha!! See yall next fall!

No surprises at the Sugar Shack, a delightful trip through rural NY and South-Western Vermont, albeit 40 plus miles one way for us. Been there perhaps a dozen times since 2024, still have found nothing that would make me even think about a rating less than 5 stars. I am a picky, demanding, relatively hard to please customer. I believe that the key to running a business is consistency. Run whatever kind of business you want to run but be consistent. The customer has a right to know what to expect next time, after his first visit . Any business can hit it just right and deliver a world class experience once; the key to a steady 5 star rating is to deliver that time and time again. Sugar Shack does exactly that. Their creemees are, quite simply put, perfect. First time, third time, eighth time, twelfth time. Never varying in intense maple flavor that tastes just like syrup right out of the jug. Never poor consistency. Always, always, thick and creamy and substantial. I did notice one difference late last summer; the size of the large cones increased a bit with no corresponding price increase. Prices for the creemees are super reasonable. Five of us went there the other day and the bill was pennies over $20. Two larges, 3 smalls. For a premium quality cone filled with plenty of ice cream, being sold in a touristy area, that is phenomenal. Don't like ice cream? What the heck is wrong with you???? :) Nevertheless, their apple cider donuts, especially the cinnamon coated version, are really good. Always fresh, and much less greasy than the genre is known for. Not heartburn, no disgusting grease soaked bag on the way home, just plain great flavor and freshness. Time for a bit of a ramble. These people, and their business, are real. The two young ladies that run the store are charming and efficient. They are nice to customers because they are nice people, not because there is a tip jar on the counter. I have been on enough cruises and eaten in enough restaurants in my 76 years to have developed a pretty accurate sense of someone being phony because they are in a tipped position, and being blunt, this ain't that. It would seem that the key to the Sugar Shack for me is the realness, the staff, the creemees. Somehow though there is more. They have a wonderful tree shaded side yard with old fashioned picnic tables. Those tables outside, so unassuming, so very not fancy, so utterly 'country', just fit perfectly with the trees and the overall rural ambiance. Going there is relaxing and brings me back to being a much much younger version of myself. Born and raised in NYC, at 14 the family moved to a town in Upstate NY with a population of 1200. Sugar Shack brings back memories of little roadside ice cream places and snack bars and a slower, more peaceful, just plain better time. The owner and her staff (relatives if I understand correctly) are providing a lot more than ice cream and maple syrup and assorted delicious premium treats and foodstuffs. They are bringing us back in time to when business was interactions between people, not transactions with a multi-national corporation. Well done, ladies, well done.
