I have tried on several occasions to like this place. The fact is the lady manager (?) is a bit rude; this has been my experience across multiple visits. The prospective customer base for the items she sells is extraordinarily passionate about ornaments and inquisitive about their provenance; however, it is quite clear that she doesn't understand these customers nor the questions they ask at all. I am also fairly confident that she intentionally removes the MSRP tag from the Old World Christmas ornament line in order to charge prices in excess of MSRP. I was looking forward to visiting this store but quickly realized that they don't like children. My daughter picked up an overpriced stuffed animal that she wanted, but I was still debating whether to purchase it. As she hugged the little toy, an elderly man approached and stood next to us, staring. I tried to make friendly conversation, but he told me it was a very high-quality item, and if I wasn't going to buy it, I should put it back. It made me feel so uncomfortable that I took it from my daughter, who started to cry, and left the store. If the staff treated potential customers better, I might have made a purchase, as I had originally intended to buy some Christmas decorations. I found the attitude of the staff to be rude and discriminatory. I've had bad experiences with this store before, but I thought it was just a coincidence. But it didn't happen by chance. Stopped in with my mom and my 13m old son in his stroller. Upon entering I realized how small it was and not stroller friendly-- before I could turn around without knocking anything over I was approached by an older gentleman who I assume was the owner? And told me to leave- not asked but told me to go so I said "ok. I'll leave then" he said "that would be for the best" I thanked him for his lack of compassion and left and unfortunately knocked something over since another customer was blocking my exit who refused to move for me to pick up the item and leave. Such an embarrassing encounter. I will NEVER go back and spend a flipping penny in that place. He needs to Learn how to speak to people. Put a sign out that explains your store is not stroller friendly instead of being a complete rude jerk in front of everyone inside the store. read more

I love this store! How could you not?! Everything is beautifully displayed. I wish more stores were as tasteful and magical. I also love that everything is handmade in Germany and are works of art. After all, aren't we tired of all the junk sold in most stores which are basically cheap, mass produced, and made in China by slave labor? I see some complaints about the prices- FYI- Hello?! Dieter has incredible taste and has curated a beautiful store. A friend and I were on a Memorial Day road trip from New York, partly for the purposes of visiting this shop which we were curious about after hearing about it on a podcast. We entered cautiously more as tourists than shoppers but within minutes were so full of the Christmas spirit we each dropped like $150 on ornaments and gifts. We kept the poor guy's shop open like forty-five minutes after closing. He does have many particular rules which we were terrified of breaking, but if you follow them you can't go wrong. I have no idea when I'll be in Middleburg again but I know that when I am I will definitely be returning. read more

We wandered into The Christmas Sleigh this past weekend while out exploring Middleburg. Having German parents and living in Germany for three years, this lovely store made me feel welcome and right at home. Its chock full of everything German - steins, traditional wine glasses, crystal, Nutcrackers, smokers, even lederhosen and dirndls in addition to the hundreds of ornaments and Christmas displays. It was overwhelming to try and see everything here. I had broken some of my everyday wine glasses and wanted to purchase a couple of the traditional green stemmed glasses. At first the owner told me they are only sold in sets but upon seeing my disappointment, said he would sell me the pair. I ended up purchasing the set anyway after giving it some thought. The owner was friendly and welcoming. There was traditional German music playing in the store and he would sing along as he made his way through the store to assist customers. He sometimes would start a sentence in English and end in German. It was all very comforting as these are things my parents do. I found out later the store is owned by the kind German man who assisted us and his wife Linda Tripp. I found it sad that some reviewers based their entire experience and rating of the store on something that happened so long ago. Yes, the items are pricey. They are genuine German articles and would not be cheap anywhere else. I enjoyed my visit to this store and would stop in again next time I am in Middleburg. read more

It is a question that haunts connoisseurs of the late-20th-century American history: whatever happened to Linda Tripp? Whatever happened to Linda Tripp is the Christmas Sleigh! After disappearing from the spotlight post-Lewinsky, she went on to marry her childhood sweetheart, a German man named Dieter Rausch, and open this rural fiesta of high-end Christmas accessories, riding gear, and lederhosen. Dieter was behind the counter when my husband and I went to visit last summer. I was six and a half months pregnant, and marveling at my size, he asked me if I had "two in there." No. But then he gave me a pink plastic pig--apparently a German thing for good luck--so we were all good. This place is EXPENSIVE. Think $1500-for-a-cuckoo-clock expensive. But then again, Middleburg is full of the sort of people who would think nothing of paying that. And the cuckoo clocks, like everything else on offer, are handmade by master craftsmen -- truly deserving of the price. At best, it's a treasure trove; at worst, it's an adventure. I love the Christmas Sleigh. German culture is a wonderful part of my childhood and I feel like a jofyilled kid every time I visit this shop. Middleburg is a quiet little town where things take time and so I have had to be patient while the candy I love from this place was on order. It was worth the wait. The customer service is beyond friendly- It is special and I love this shop. It is a blessing when someone does something to bring joy to others. Terrible experience, will not return! I was shopping with my two girlfriends for a ladies day out. We're excited to visit the Christmas store, but sadly that ended upon entering the store. There were signs posted in everywhere " do not touch", which I found a little odd, but I abided by the owners wishes. As I was shopping and talking an older gentleman started to follow me through the store. I was confused, but continued admiring all of the beautiful decor. The man proceeded to get closer and closer to me as I shopped. He then started touching my purse. I turned around and said excuse me, and he said I need to see your purse. For absolutely no reason, I was accused of stealing. I was completely mortified, I calmly said no and then tried to head for the door, he continued tailing me, getting as close as possible. He made me feel so uncomfortable, I will never return! read more

I have had almost the same issue as Tony. I ordered an ornament online on December 2nd and they charged my credit card right away. It's been over 2 weeks and I have not received any shipment information, nor have I gotten the ornament in the mail. I have called 4 times in the past week and left voicemails and sent 2 emails to their information email (one which got bounced back today) and I have heard nothing back. No one ever answers their phone and they have absolutely NO customer service. At least Tony has been able to get a refund, I can't even get them to talk to me. I did visit the store a few months ago and their stuff is cool, but the guy working there followed us around the entire time and it was just creepy. I just want to get this issue resolved and never have to deal with them again! read more

I cannot recommend this business. I was sent the wrong item but charged the higher price of the item I had originally ordered. Since March 4 I have called 3 times, left messages and emailed them twice. All to no avail. Fortunately, I am not out a huge sum of money. Wow, I wish I had read about online ordering from this store prior to purchasing. I spent over $400 on a Christmas pyramid. It was sent to me in pieces and I called and talked to Dieter about it. He told me to send it back and I did so in the same packaging. When he received it, he accused me of packing it poorly and said that it was smashed. I asked him to exchange it and to give me another one--it's been two months and I haven't heard from him even though I've left several messages and emails. When I call, they no longer pick up. DO NOT LOSE YOUR MONEY WITH THIS STORE! I'll be checking into the Better Business Bureau in the area and into small claims court. read more

Bit on the pricey side for most things, but definitely a unique and cool selection. I like to go here when I'm getting something for someone who has everything! I had some slight issues with my last online order as an item was out of stock, but got it cleared up after a couple of e-mails, definitely going to shop in store next time though. Folks at the shop are plenty friendly, albeit I wish I knew a bit more German. Worth going to just to look around, there is some serious Christmas eye candy here. My husband and I come to Middleburg a lot and we make sure to stop by this store when we come to town. We've introduced my family to smokers (wooden figurines that have a hole where their mouths are and you put an incense inside and the smoke comes out of the hole giving it an impression of smoking) and they have a wide variety at this place. I'm not sure why the low reviews. The proprietor is the nicest guy ever. The products can get pricey but that's because they're well crafted. I come here to get unique gifts that never disappoints. read more

We ususally go in once a year when we are in Middleburg. However, not this year and likely never again. We were stopped as we tried to enter and told we had to wait because there were too many people in the shop. When I looked in I saw hardly anyone. Seemed like a ploy to me. Ridiculous. At this point I can't give more than one star! I ordered something over 2 weeks ago, was charged, but never received the items. No one answers my emails and I only got through twice on the phone only to hear what sounded like someone very annoyed with my calls. There is a customer service section on their website, but unfortunately it doesn't exist in reality! I am very frustrated with the fact that they just don't seem to get that they either forgot to ship my items, or maybe shipped to a wrong address, but that either way, they need to refund my money or send me the items! BUYER BEWARE! I ordered a nutcracker from this shop and was sent one that was broken and not as advertised (no music box). It had been poorly repaired and sent to me in very bad condition. I called and talked to the owner who said to sent it back. He apologized profusely about the condition and promised a refund check in the mail the next day. Needless to say, I have never received the check and no one answers the phone when I try and call. Do not do business with this shop as they are not ethical in their business practices. Avoid doing business with this merchant. Their telephone answering machine says they are open seven days a week but no one answers the phone and messages left on the machine are not returned. I placed an online order on Dec. 5, my credit card was charged, and after waiting two weeks, my order was still undelivered. I left multiple telephone messages and e-mails over the course of a week that were not answered. Finally, I spoke with an employee who told me the items I had ordered were out of stock. I asked for my order to be cancelled and for my credit card to be credited. They said they would send a check rather than issue a credit to my card account. Bad business. So I contacted my card issuer and opened a dispute on the charge from The Christmas Sleigh. read more
