I came in with pretty unclear instructions and reference photos and both the stylist and the owner were able to figure out what fit my needs. This seems to be a huge strength here. 2. They were able to fit me in last minute. What was bad 1. The total time listed online was 1.45 hours, the service ended up taking 2.45 hours. I have been to many salons and never had my hair take that long, especially when I was getting all over color and a blowout (no haircut). Perhaps this was due to me booking last minute. However, the website booking made it look wide open and I think it is the responsibility of the salon to accurately represent their booking capability. I would not have booked with them had I known what experience was to follow. 2. The salon overall seemed overbooked and people were bouncing around. Three different people worked on my hair. Personally, I really didn't like this set up. I like to build a relationship with my stylist and this hectic atmosphere was not synonymous with that 3. The blowout I had was so uncomfortable. The rollers were tangled up in my hair and I could feel it ripping out as the stylist took them out. I have never have a blowout be so painful. My hair had so many split ends after I looked in the mirror at home. 4. My hair fell the moment I stepped outside. Granted it was a windy day, but my hair doesn't typically fall that fast. I think this may have been due to the stylist rushing at the end. On one hand I'm glad she did because I had been sitting alone for quite some time, but on the other hand I paid for essentially nothing. My old stylist back home (moved cross country) had no problem giving me a blowout that lasted at least a few hours. Even on windy days. 5. At one point the owner took my stylist in the back and seemed to be scolding her. This is never something a new client wants to see. I immediately felt anxious that something had gone wrong with my hair color. It ended up great but tbh experience was awkward and handled strangely in my opinion. 6. Finally. The price came out to $260 for all over color and a blowout. I wouldn't mind this price if it wasn't for the lackluster experience. Hair salons are charging luxury prices without offering luxury experiences. The pricing structure is also strange. They charge $60 extra for toner but I have never had a color job that didn't need toner to look good. It feels strange to not include it all together. The toner charge was added after which was a surprise because toner has always been included in the price. To be clear, the website did ask if I wanted to add toner for $60. I thought that was for someone coming in looking just to tone and not add more color. Perhaps this was my mistake but I found the whole pricing structure strange. A few other things to note: water was offered but never given and they only accept cash/zelle/venmo tips. Overall this salon was not a fit for me. A lot of this is subjective preference but I think it's important that people understand what environment they are paying for when they sign up to spend hundreds. That being said, the color was beautiful and I am grateful for that.

Instead of taking responsibility for the result and trying to understand why I was unhappy, the stylist repeatedly shifted the conversation toward blaming me. I was made to feel that the problem was somehow related to my language barrier and cultural differences in communication. At one point, the conversation even became about money and what I had paid for -- essentially, "You didn't pay for the whole highlight, right?" -- which felt completely inappropriate and shaming. I have never experienced this level of disrespect or lack of accountability in a beauty salon. I left feeling sad, embarrassed, and unwelcome, when I had simply come in expecting professional service and to be heard as a client. I want to be clear that I don't believe this experience represents the values of the entire salon or its owners. My issue is specifically with this individual stylist and the way he handled a situation when the result did not meet my expectations. I am sharing this so other women, especially those who may have a language or cultural communication difference, know to make sure their concerns are genuinely listened to and treated respectfully. A client should never be made to feel guilty or ashamed for expressing disappointment with a service.

Thinking about going from long hair to short hair? Magen at Circle Salon is the pro you need to see. After months of traveling and running my medium-long length hair through the gauntlet of hard water, high iron content, sun, salt water, and general grime that accumulates from living out of a backpack for a while, I finally bit the bullet and decided to start fresh. I have NEVER had short hair before, so I was determined to get a consultation to ease my nerves. Right off the bat, the entire staff at Circle Salon was a dream. When I called, I told the receptionist I was going long to short, was a little nervous, wanted a consultation etc., and right away she set an appointment up for me with Magen, saying she was just the person for me to see and citing her familiarity with exactly that sort of thing. Sure enough, I showed up, had my wine and almonds (that MIGHT have been the deciding factor ;D) and met with Magen. I showed her the few images I had, and explained my hair to her (fine, on the thinner side, wavy, little wispies in the front -- my hair is kind of difficult). I discussed what I wanted ideally, then asked for her opinion -- long story short, she took everything I asked for, used her prowess to fine-tune it for my actual hair type and her using own artist's eye, and created something awesome. In addition, the rest of the salon staff were delightfully engaging and overall kind, and showed the same excitement as me to see the final product. Just a small touch, but really helped make the appointment phenomenal. The haircut itself is absolutely wonderful, and after a week of playing with it I'm actually still able to achieve the same results as when I walked out thanks to Magen's instructions. It's also growing out beautifully, so hopefully I can avoid the awkward stage just a tad as it continues to grow. Or maybe I'll just keep it this way! Either way, I will becoming back and seeing Magen as many times as I'm here and any time I return to Chicago. Highly recommend. The TL;DR: 1. The service and the end result are well worth the price, especially if you're considering as dramatic a change as long hair to short hair. 2. The staff is an absolute treat. 3. Magen is a pro with a fantastic eye for detail who has both the exactness of the Paul Mitchell school, the daring of the Aveda Institute, and a unique charm and style all her own. She will listen to what you say, take what you want, and make something that is prefect for you. read more

LOVE IT!!! I have been going to Jamie for a couple years now and I cannot imagine letting anyone else come near my hair. Besides the fact that I've never gotten more compliments in my life after I started going to her, it's also the EASIEST cut I have ever had to maintain (which is almost impossible with short hair). Everytime the cut & color come out perfectly. The biggest challenge with short hair is typically the growing out phase, and somehow she manages to cut with such precision that it looks amazing throughout. The only reason I remember I need to go in is when the roots start to grow out. The salon is awesome, easy parking and a great chill vibe. Jamie is so fun and makes the experience worth it every visit. And the best head massage during shampoo & condition! I've been to numerous salons throughout the city, but upon moving to Ukrainian Village, I wanted to find a salon that was local, and, after reading the profile on Yelp, I decided to give Circle Salon, which had just opened, a try. Turns out, I made a really good decision. Jamie listened to all my previous stylist woes - I had been growing my hair out from a pixie cut, and other stylists didn't seem to get the shaping vs. cutting concept - and gave me a great consultation, asking all the right questions and telling me what was possible and what wasn't. I also wanted to bring my hair back to its original auburn, and she was set me up with a semi-perm color that blended so well you wouldn't know I ever dyed it. Stopped by the salon last Friday and was able to get in the next morning with Zahadita for a cut and color. I absolutely love my cut and color! I had longer hair and Zahadita cut a lot off into a awesome modern cut (which I really needed). I color my hair red and wanted to go darker - I had mentioned Kate Walsh's new color and Zahadita looked it up Friday night so she knew exactly what color I wanted. I thought that was extremely cool that she did that. Zahadita took her time going over the different red options and also my haircut. Also, amazing brow wax and the scalp massage - awesome! I had an appointment with Terra a few weeks ago and she was awesome! I brought in a picture of what I wanted and for the first time I could say that my hair matched the picture I brought in. :) Terra is super sweet and made me feel comfortable. It was as if I had known her for years. She could tell that my hair was damaged from all the coloring I have done and did a deep condition for me for free!! The cut was great too. Jamie -- the owner at Cirlce Salon -- is the best! Not only is she a fantastic stylist and colorist, she is also a real Mensch (and that's hard to find in the beauty industry). She has an artist's eye, but is also very practical. I have gone from platinum blonde to dark brown in the past year, very happy with all the colors and cuts along the way. She takes the time to make sure you have a shared vision, and she somehow remembers every detail of every conversation you've had about what you like and don't like about your hair. I came into Epoch with a last minute somewhat bizarre hair request. I needed a 1940's hairstyle (Victory rolls and a rolled bang) done on a wig for a show I had the next day. It is extremely hard to find a hairdresser you trust (especially after some bad experiences) and there are some many places out there, but I haven't stopped my search until one of my friends gave me highest recommendations of The Circle salon. They give $20 discount to both, you and your friend who brought you in which is really nice :) I had haircuts and color done by Rita and Sarahmya and both are so attentive and intuitive. Devin sutter is the kind of hair stylist that you can say "do whatever you think looks good" to and she comes up with something amazing. She knows hair! I man, obviously go to your appointment with some ideas, but I've given Devin loose guidelines and she always creates something beautiful. She is a true artist with hair!! I've gone red with her, added blonde, gotten an angled bob, done luscious layers, and all sorts of fun things with Dev! Jodi does a great job managing the salon. She is always kind when you come in and super helpful and understanding when you need to cancel and reschedule an appointment. Moe is a fantastic stylist. I originally started coming to Marin for my colorist Michelle DiGiovanni. I didn't start coloring my hair until my late 30s because I always thought it was too high maintenance and would be damaging to my hair. But, I went through a mini mid-life crisis where I wanted to dye my hair pink and thankfully I listened to Michelle when she said "maybe let's try to ease in with a balayage first." And many years later my appointments with Michelle are one of the few things I religiously make sure I keep as part of my self-care. She has always done an amazing job adding depth and dimension to my hair that feels natural. It also ages well and I never feel it looks "bad" even when I'm due for a gloss. (Which is definitely a plus in my book) Michelle also introduced me to my stylist Bria Salvador-French who I've been seeing now for the last year. Bria came highly recommended as she cuts Michelle's hair (which always looks amazing). From my first appointment I knew I was in good hands. She taught me so many new things on how to do my hair in a low maintenance way. And most of all, she listened and really made me feel cared for as a woman and as a person. Something that I realize in hindsight I was missing previously. Her skills and craft speak for themselves but the extra care is what sets her apart. Elizabeth hadn't seen my hair in person or in pictures and refused to work with me because they stated that it wouldn't be "a good fit" very confusing messages and was not even able to even get an in person consultation! To add, it took over a week for a response and after my last attempt to schedule a simple haircut/trim, I was declined for the reason of "not a good fit" I would like to talk to the owner/manager about this issue as I appald by this response. Also "color correction" was assumed and stated in the text response - stylist never saw my hair in person or viewed photos. How can that assumption be made ? Also, I (as many women are) willing to invest the time to try out different stylists /engage in consultations until the right fit is found- the statement of "wasting my time with a consultation" is absurd. In addition, and I quote from Elizabeth's first text " Yes, I ABSOLUTELY work with clients who have resistant gray, and I'd be happy to help you with your root touch-up. " How would then their comfort/expertise level with resistant gray CHANGE after a follow up text message? I question the reasons for why my request for a consult/trim was denied. I found this stylist and salon very unprofessional.

This time she did highlights but also something she called a "base bump" to hide the dark ring around my head from the all over blonde growing out that I used to have. It made my hair look so much more natural which is great because I work in a conservative industry. The appointment I had today was especially awesome as she also gave me a haircut with long layers and bangs. I never try anything new with my hair so this was a huge step for me and she did a beautiful job, even teaching me how to dry them so they will lay correctly. I am even considering going back to get the bangs cut even shorter! She also gives free bang trims. She was so patient with me during the haircut and blowout as I had a last minute phone meeting I had to be on... she turned off the music and continued to cut my hair while I was on the call. She is not only the best blonde colorist I have ever had, but also patient, kind, and so accommodating. Annie is the best and I am a client for life!

Then the salon I went to bleached my hair with product so bad that my hair essentially turned into a bird nest made out of grass. Dry, endless tangles, and brassy. I went to solo Solon back in 2018 and booked an appointment with Joey. It was probably the best 5 hours spent - Joey was sooooo patient with my stubborn asian hair, and needless to say, I looked fabulous. Soon after Joey moved to another salon, I followed him to keep up with my hair appointments. There's never been any disappointment or anything less than positive experience with Joey. I would say "I think my hair needs some touch up", and Joey would say "oh yes it does, hon". And you will be in good hands. And by good hands, I mean you will be so pleasantly surprised by how you look right afterwards, a little surprised and trying to get used to the new look. But then 3 days later you look into the mirror and you're like, oh jeez why do I look so good????? The coloring is so multidimensional - I've gotten so many compliments for my hair. I broke up with above-mentioned guy in June, and I went to see Joey again. "I want a change because I'm back on the market," I said. "I think maybe I want to go brunette again." Joey looked at me and said, "my dear, let's lighten you up this time because of the things you're going through. It's a touch time and darker tone will only weigh you down." That moment I felt like Joey truly cares, that he takes care of not only my hair or my looks, but my soul (really). Fast forward to January 2020, Joey moved to Fusion Hair Studio, and I had my appointment with him again. I always walked out with the happiest, most genuine smile on my face, thanks to Joey.
