I have been a patron of Marin now for over a year--after being with my previous salon for over 15 years. That was a huge change for me but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I originally started coming to Marin for my colorist Michelle DiGiovanni. I didn't start coloring my hair until my late 30s because I always thought it was too high maintenance and would be damaging to my hair. But, I went through a mini mid-life crisis where I wanted to dye my hair pink and thankfully I listened to Michelle when she said "maybe let's try to ease in with a balayage first." And many years later my appointments with Michelle are one of the few things I religiously make sure I keep as part of my self-care. She has always done an amazing job adding depth and dimension to my hair that feels natural. It also ages well and I never feel it looks "bad" even when I'm due for a gloss. It just wears in and makes such a huge difference for me in feeling put together. Michelle is just also a great person who is always fun to catch up with and a cat lover to boot! (Which is definitely a plus in my book) Michelle also introduced me to my stylist Bria Salvador-French who I've been seeing now for the last year. Bria came highly recommended as she cuts Michelle's hair (which always looks amazing). From my first appointment I knew I was in good hands. She taught me so many new things on how to do my hair in a low maintenance way. And most of all, she listened and really made me feel cared for as a woman and as a person. Something that I realize in hindsight I was missing previously. Her skills and craft speak for themselves but the extra care is what sets her apart. I see Amber here and she's great for highlights and for cuts. She knows my hair and is very understand when I need touch ups (I have a lot of hair and it gets thick on the ends). She also knows how to make my cut and color grow out beautifully, since I'm a little lazy with my appointments. When I can't get in with Amber I've seen Samatha here as well and she's stupendous too! Rude owner. I was charged $47.50 for a late arrival fee which is not explicitly mentioned on the website. There is a late arrival fee mentioned in vague terms but it is not clear how much they will charge you. If I had known this would be the cost of the late arrival fee, I never would have booked at this salon in the first place. I called an hour ahead of my appointment to notify the salon of my late arrival due to traffic and to see if it is possible to bump out my appointment. No one picked up. Owner also tried to claim I didn't call his salon when I had called the salon and had the phone call transaction in my phone history and showed him. He also noticed that there was actually a call placed at the time I called after saying no one called the salon. He made a point to tell me exactly how many minutes I was late and offered no next steps without me prompting him. Very disinterested in having a new customer. Look at his responses to the other negative reviews. The way he communicates in his responses to the other negative reviews is similar to how he actually communicates in person. I rarely leave negative reviews, and am sad to post this one when the haircuts I saw in the other reviews looked quite nice. read more

I love this neighborhood salon! I see Sam for color and she never disappoints! I'm a picky, former hairstylist too LOL. The space is beautiful. Minimalist but not cold. Please note this review is just about the weird experience I had with Amber. Nicole is an amazing stylist who is very very talented and I've never had a bad experience with her ever! Jack is also very kind, helpful and has a beautiful shop. ANYWAY- I went in for a color consult for blonding after having fashion colors previously. The vibe with Amber was immediately really weird, she was moving around me really standoffishly like she was disgusted. She cut off a large chunk--as in a small ponytail in a rubber band--from one portion of the back of my head. She put bleach on the fully 1 inch-wide chunk of my hair for less than 5 minutes (it lifted a lot surprisingly) and opened the foil and immediately said "see, so you can't go blonde because it's yellow." I don't know if she thought I was stupid or if that was her trying to get me to not book with her. I felt really weird about the whole thing but because I used to go to this salon for my cut, figured she must know what she's talking about and proceeded to book. She didn't provide an estimate for cost which was also strange and felt like she was rushing to get me out of her chair. Anyway I canceled and went for a second opinion from a different salon and happily now have healthy, bright blonde hair. Note this review is for their customer service and booking an appointment only as I was not motivated enough to spend more than 20 mins to make a hair appointment seeing how its not suppose to be rocket science. I tried to book an appointment to color my hair via Yelp. The response back seemed positive with "how can I help you book your appointment?" When I tried to call them directly the person on the other line directed me to their website. Here is my problem with this hands off approach in booking new appointments. 1) If is not helpful if you do not know exactly what one wants or the name of what the procedure is called in snobby hair-speak 2) As a new client you have no idea who specializes in what hair-speak service 3) Referring a client back to a cold website to just enter some basic information when they already have called in, and you can ask me while I am on the phone is.... just not customer-friendly 4) The appointment troll basically encouraged me to go else where "You are welcome to take your money elsewhere" Nice. Business for them MUST be good to turn away potential clients with girl friends who color their hair often. I don't know about you but I would not want to waste any more time or my hard earned money on this snobby, rude and nasty establishment. read more

I have been coming to Marin for a few years due to my stylist relocating here. This place is constantly covered in hair and not clean even when they first open. I almost slipped on a massive pile of hair in the restroom a while back first thing in the morning. Jack, the owner, is incredibly rude and unprofessional in every interaction I have experienced and witnessed. I dread coming here because of him, the no outside shoe policy in the winter, and the shampoo bowls being placed with your legs and crotch directly in front of the stylists mirrors as you lay flat on your back versus at an angle like every other salon. The staff is constantly apologizing to customers for how uncomfortable it is. I consider what outfit I am wearing when I come in because I was caught off guard the first time while wearing a knee length dress. The experience here doesn't match the high price of the service and the quality given from the stylists. read more

My hair got some damage because of my last session in another salon. I asked them to color my hair with gray but the result did not match my expectation and worst, they caused damage with it. It's not a good experience for me because I really trust that salon since I am a regular there. But I guess the new staff made a mess. And because of that incident, I decided to move to another salon. And now, I tried this My Hair Co Salon and I guess this will be my new salon that I will always go to whenever I want. I sent a request in (late) night and got an answer almost immediately! I asked for a partial balayage and was set up for an appointment with Samantha Snyder - Color Director & Stylist and omg I'm so happy! I honestly did not know 100% what I wanted. I got the best hair cut of my life from Jack in March of 2021. Jack did an excellent job giving me the exact hair cut I wanted, I also got an EXCELLENT partial balayage from Emily. I was always too nervous to do a big chop to my hair and Jack & Emily gave me a new look that was better than I could have ever imagined. I asked for a trendy cool girl shaggy hair cut with curtain bangs, and thats exactly what I got. Jack perfectly understood what I wanted and executed it perfectly. There is no other soul on this earth that I would trust with my blonde other than Daphne. I came to Daphne about 4-5 years ago with MESSED up hair from a previous dye job. Without damaging my hair at all, she completely stripped the bad coloring out and after two sessions I was back to PERFECT blonde. Daphne always listens and creates a custom solution depending on what you need that day and results always speak for themselves. I get endless compliments on the tone of my hair too. If she ever leaves Chicago/stops doing hair I don't know what I would do. read more

I visited Marin about three months ago and had a GREAT haircut by tonya. She worked my curly/wavy hair just the way I like, it has been growing in the style that fits my face, and layered in a way where don't have to do much to style. I LOVED IT and was really excited to book another appointment with tonya again. I appreciated the online booking as I lead a busy life (who doesn't these days), BUT.......(hey otherwise this would totally have been a five star review) I'm not sure why they advertise that they will call you to confirm ONLY if you are new client (I'm not). They called relentlessly the day after I placed the online appointment to confirm while I'm at work and I can't step out. They called while I was driving in traffic, I got five calls from them when I answered once telling them I would call later in the evening since I was at work. Life happens an emergency that led me to the hospital happened only to be driving on the way back from the hospital for them to cancel my appointment. I had to pull over, in traffic to sort this out. I understand that it is a policy but don't have online bookings if even existing customers have to be called back. I have plenty to worry about in my life without a haircut having to be one of them. I had chosen Marin because it had the flexibility of online bookings in my neighborhood and decent ratings on Yelp but I'm not sure if I'll continue to get my haircut here. Tldr; their online booking system is not a really a booking system more of a we-will-call-you nonstop-until-you -pick -up-to-get-info-we already-should-have-or-cancel-you-in-less-than 24-hrs. read more

Daphne has been coloring my hair now for awhile, and I would never go to anyone else. She listens to what I want completely and only takes liberties if I ask her to! She also is very careful not to damage my hair, as I am consistently bleaching it. All of the product they use at Marin are amazing and smell delicious, and the salon itself is extremely aesthetically pleasing! I. Love. Mops. For a show I'm involved in at the moment, I planned on chopping off my just-past-shoulder-length hair to a pixie. I needed a seriously rad place to go, and after a suggestion by a fellow pixie-headed friend, I headed to Mops. This was a place I had walked by many times in my Logan Square living days, always oohing and ahhhing over the interior and especially that pink wallpaper! So, when I pulled up and realized it was the same place, I was super excited. My hair appointment was with Monica, who took me back immediately. I brought a friend with me for the big chop and she was nice enough to let her sit by and hang during the cut. Monica made sense of the 3 slightly varied photos I brought for reference and the chop began. She's a very friendly stylist, talkative but not too talkative, and walked me through the cut. I've chopped my hair a couple of times before, but usually walk out of the salon HATING it...until you get that few days of growth and comfort with the big change. This time, I walked out really loving my cut. Albiet freaked out (I couldn't stop touching the back of my hair for the rest of the night), I still loved it. She is a talented stylist and saavy business woman as well as just being plain 'ol cool. I've gotten my hair cut twice by Kate and have loved it both times. Customer service when calling to book appointments or ask questions is hit or miss and I have seen a man there- I think he is the owner- be downright rude to people who were behaving perfectly reasonably. If you're in a pinch and need a good cut it's fine because the stylists are good at what they do, but I would rather support better run businesses and spend my time in more pleasant environments, especially for what this costs. read more

However, regretfully I must give mass props to mops. This place is the best. Jack = best cut I've had in my life. Krista = best color I've had in my life. COLOR: I have this amazing special effects purple, teal, mauve thing going on in some hidden peek out streaks that has on day 3 been described by onlookers as: "the most amazing hair color!" "its iridescent like a feather!" "wow - I've never seen something so cool - where'd you get that done???" It was 100% Krista's vision and is better than anything I could have asked for so I am so glad I just let her do her thing. CUT: Beautiful shape, just the right amount of texture and layers and Jack was a blast to chat with during the process. He knows his shiz. It is clear they are taking new procedures due to COVID very seriously, they politely request you wait outside until they are ready for you and take your temperature and sanitize your hands upon entering. They list exact procedures in their website so make sure to read the website before you get there. Jack was absolutely wonderful! He asked a lot of great questions to make sure he understood what I wanted. I absolutely love my new cut and he even gave me several styling tips to try at home. I just had a haircut at Mops with Tricia and she did a fantastic job! Monday's are their training days and my haircut was offered for free as she is still training. Tricia's technical skills are equal to haircuts that I've received from seasoned stylists. She was friendly and professional. She listened to my ideas, offered some of her own and I couldn't be happier. The shop is adorable, there is a clear theme throughout and it works incredibly well. Think if Benefit Cosmetics had an older, hipper sister, this shop would be her. Interestingly enough, this is also what Tricia successfully achieved with my cut. She took my existing haircut and gave it a more grown up look and feel while managing to keep it edgy. I would highly recommend Tricia and Mops for your hair cut needs. read more
