Played this course yesterday great course. Well maintained tight fairway green is challenging also. Very walkable.

Always provides a challenging round. Some of the slowest golf in the area with no sign of a marshall other than the retired guy hanging out on the 1st hole talking or ears off and showing off his clubs. The course itself is decent, very plain and boring. Lots of elevation and tight fairways. I wasn't super impressed with it. The whole Course is pretty compressed and sometimes confusing on where to go. The clubhouse is outdated and old, along with the restaurant area. Practice area is poor, and heard they're getting rid of the carts as well. It's a little overpriced for what ya get. Probably won't play again, just was a boring course, nothing stands out or impresses you here that's forsure. read more

Good prices and a few challenging holes make this course an excellent deal. The fairways are very narrow, and the greens don't have a flat spot on them anywhere. Course was in very good shape and green were rolling pretty true. At $20 after 2pm, you wont find a better deal around for a course like this. Save your money and don't splurge on a power cart, this is a very easy course to walk. I'll be back next time I'm in the area. read more

Well maintained golf course with the wonderful attribute of having very little water. The first water hole pulls balls into it, the party 5 18th is only trouble with a long drive. Most of the challenge of the course comes from the narrow tree-lined fairways and variety of contours on the course, at times, below, above, sideways etc. On various slopes. We played midweek October and found the course easy to get a tee time. Fun Halloween decor added color. Staff Mike and Pam were friendly, Mike introduced as to his 2 year old pet squirrel and Pam served a quick lunch at the turn. read more

I joined the Classic as a member n June 2021. Big mistake - no sand in the sand traps, driving ranged closed, tee boxes chopped up and Joe Beach, Club Professional is the definition of apathy. He told me they don't put sand in the traps because members don't take rake them. So sad because The Classic could be a great course if the Management team run by Mike Moore cared about golf instead of investment potential. I predict total closure within 2 years and a brand new housing development will replace it, just like they did on 1/2 of hole 18. read more

This course has a wonderful layout. it's very challenging, even for a high caliber player. I played this course today and was shocked to see the poor conditions which it's become. Rough bunkers which haven't been attended to, many with grass or weeds growing in them. The fairways are very dry and much of them are brown. I realize this summer has been harsh, but other courses are doing better in terms of upkeep. The Greens putted well, although a little shaggy, which is understood to protect from the heat. They have replaced the lovely fountain in the pond on #14 with a large dead tree branch; nice touch. It seems they're really struggling financially here, which is really too bad. I paid a rate of $49 + tax which should be a reasonable rate. This facility has a lovely covered area for post-tournament meals and prize ceremony. Still, given its current condition I wouldn't consider this location. I hope with the addition of new homes near the course, the financials allow this course to come back to its potential. who knows, maybe even the next generation of PGA player... read more

Used to play here often 10 years ago with a friend who lived nearby. Always immaculate; tee boxes, fairways and greens. Played today for the first ti.e in probably 2 years. Very disappointing. Cut down many trees five or so years ago. The place never really recovered. Tee boxes uneven and beat up badly. Fairways in poor shape. The greens were in good condition, but extremely hard. If the grass is this brown now, it will be unplayable in the summer, but I won't be back anyway. Oh, and two groups of 5 playing along at their own pace. No thanks. The municipal courses in Tacoma are in better condition and cost $20 less. read more

Great course for the money. Current owner did great job improving this course to bring out full potential. Course is much drier and we'll managed than I remember years ago. I used to golf at Lipoma Firs, but things got little bad with all the construction so switched over to The Classic and never regretted. Only reason for 4 stars are little run down club shack and staff customer service can be little on and off sometimes. Overall always have great time at the course. read more

I do not leave many reviews, But when I read Chips Review, I had to, Plenty of sand in the traps, most traps have been worked on and are improving daily. Yes, during Covid, most players would never rake a bunker and with the amount of play it was extremely hard for the course to keep up with them. Driving range is being remodeled. A few tee boxes have been closed to flatten and get ready for the season. Joe Beach has been a blessing for the Classic, an actual "Pro" who cares and goes out of his way to make everyone happy. Your Prediction is wrong. Winter has been tough on all Washington Courses. One last thing: the Greens at the Classic are amazing right now. Not from the area, I did some research on golf courses that was around Tacoma and The Classic Golf Club caught my interest by its high slope rating. It was really a toss between this one and Lipoma Firs which is a little further south. This course seems difficult to maintain by the staff, that being said I found this course to be more difficult than the slope rating simply based on pin placement and found this to be more of a tournament course. Whats a tournament course you may ask? To me, a tournament course is the place you want to settle a score between parties and who happens to be under 120 wins. Beer and extra golf balls will help you get through the day and fortunately the very reasonably priced restaurant offering $6 Fosters beer will leave you happy. 1)Golf and practice facility I arrived here on May 12th, Thursday morning at 730am and there was 2 cars in the parking lot. One guy was at the driving range and there were a few maintenance guys working the course. This was strange to me because Im from L.A. and golf courses are usually packed but not here. Yeah, I know, but Im not in L.A. Still, its a frame of reference I use and have after playing golf courses in all major cities in this country. Here, however, the silence is serenity. No loud traffic and no people, apparently. There was someone in the golf shop, fortunately and I paid the walking rate of $39 and asked if there was a group I could join and he said "Yes but not until 0845. I guess golfers sleep in here too but the place would be busy by the time I would finish. The makeshift clubhouse reminds me of a modular home with rooms being added as needed with the restaurant and a meeting area attached. The pro shop is small but has efficient stock of golf merch with the usual gear and apparel. Exiting the pro shop and walking towards the first tee you will find a well maintained practice area featuring a large practice green and a driving range with grass tees that is in great shape. Also, there is a cover provided with grass mats, which are also in great shape, in case it rains which happens a lot. To the left of the practice area is the first tee. To the left of that is the 18th green, to the left of that is the 10th tee box and to the left of that is the 13th tee box. Now I like to think Ive played at least a 100 courses and Ive never seen that before in golf course design. Is that bad? I didn't think so, it helped because I was walking the course, something the designer took into consideration and showed with walking paths from the tee box to the fairway as well as clearings from the green to the next tee when needed. The condition of the course is another matter with tons of divots on fairways. Now in fantasy land, golfers would replace their divots but in reality they don't. Im guessing this course is privately owned and not run by a management company or is a municipal. I'm also guessing who ever owns this course, also runs it and is probably out working the course and is quite aware of the condition but does the best he/she can. So help them out and replace your damn divots you lazy bastards! That being said the course is well designed and a pleasure to play. Elevated tee boxes help bring an understanding in each hole with the exceptions of holes 14, 15 and 16. The roughs are easy to play out and you should be thankful for that because they are plenty of opportunities to lose your golf balls. But what really will drive up your score are the greens. The design is unconventional to say the least with pins that are difficult to get close to. You need to play smart, hit well with your wedges and have some good luck to score well. The sand in the bunkers are okay but could be better. However, courses like this only get so much income and needs to be affordable to attract your average golfer. The white, powdery stuff ain't cheap, so deal with it. 2)Restaurant Sammy is one of the three ladies that run the small eatery with the usual fare but a low cost compared to other golf courses. I always enjoyed a good patty melt myself and was not disappointed. And considering I was playing by myself, I felt in no hurry to enjoy lunch after playing nine. Sammy offered small talk which is always nice and talked about the weather and what not. 3)Conclusion I normally do a section of staff but Im running out of space so I'll just jump to the conclusion. Come here to play and have fun. You will not break 90, don't even try. Instead, bring a friend or loved one who enjoy your company. Appreciate your surroundings and play each hole with joy. I look forward to coming back next year and I hope people start showing up early so I can play with someone. GEEZ! People, wake up already! read more

I've been playing local golf in the puget sound region for the last dozen years or so. I am around a zero handicap and I know what is a good challenge and what good conditions look like. I played the Classic this weekend and i found just that. Great course conditioning, fast and smooth greens, no standing water to be seen. Wonderful test of golf, I understand now how local area professional Ryan Moore grew up playing here. It will test your skills and then some. Great golf course layout, incredible conditioning, friendly staff, and very, very reasonable price. I give the Classic the best rating for these very reasons! I know i'll be coming back. read more

Having played here a couple times, I walked away scratching my head about the daily operations of the facility. Both times there was no beverage cart despite being in prime time rates. Just played on Labor Day and the gentleman in the pro shop could not give me an answer on whether there would be a beverage cart on the course. For $69 green fees with a cart on a hot summer day without a beverage cart, is unacceptable, especially without water coolers on the course. The course was completely packed and everyone was looking around for refreshments. If you come out to this course, make sure and pack your own beverages or stock up in the pro shop before the round. Both times though the course was in great condition with firm greens and fairways. The quality of the course and practice greens made up for the short comings of the food and beverage department. If I lived closer it would be worthwhile to consider an membership at the RMG facilities which have a great value compared to the overpriced courses closer to Seattle. This is definitely more of a links setup facility and if you like firm and fast greens, this place is for you. read more

I had heard about this course years ago and was anxious to play it. So yesterday I played it for the first time. Given the quality of the course the greens fees were very reasonable. I really liked the greens. They were fast and true. There was a nice variety of holes - no two holes were the same. But that's about the only positives I can give the golf course. I'm a one handicap and played a variety of courses. This was one of the worst courses I've ever played for signage. Being new, my playing partners and I continually struggled to figure out where the next tee box was. It's not a big deal, but annoying. We weren't the only ones. A group coming off the 8th green had to ask us foreigners where the 9th tee was. My second quibble, a bigger one I think, is with maintenance. I had the feeling when I was playing that the course was unkempt. Like it or not, appearance matters to golfers. There is stumpage all over the place, as well as large shaving piles. I don't know if the facility is going through a systematic tree removal project or not, but the remaining stumps really take away from the ambiance of the golf course. Additionally, the facility, in my opinion, needs to mow down the tall grass around the tee boxes. This golf course could become a real Pacific Northwest gem with a more aggressive maintenance plan. What were they thinking in removing all the trees? Clubhouse is pathetic along with the restroom facilities. Parking on Saturday was non existent. Weekend green fees are just outrageous for what is offered. Tree stumps and debris on the course looked like a war zone. Won't be returning unless I can get a "deal". Not worth the price or the effort to drive. No Golf Marshall to manage play. A real "goat rodeo" in Spanaway! The course was fun to play but the ambiance was in the toilet. What a mess. Granted they are removing 80% of the trees. Which is weird. I believe there are rumors of links type course. Kind of a stretch. Besides the deforestation project going on the fairway rough could use a good rake effort. When your ball is 2 feet off the fairway and you can't find your ball because it's under 6" of dried grass clippings. The greens were in good shape and the ball rolled great. Clubhouse is sub par. I won't be back for a long time if ever. I would recommend that if you have a long term plan. Post the vision or else all your patrons see is a mess. read more

The Classic is a very interesting and challenging course. I say interesting because there are some quite funky green designs, one of them is the shape of a horseshoe, others have some extreme breaks in them with some tough pin placements. The fairways are narrow and you will be penalized for stray tee shots. It's also surrounded by a neighborhood, where I heard many different sounds like a rooster, a dog fight, many sirens, and a chain saw. On the plus side, the course is in great condition, smooth greens that are quick, and your ball will hold even at the end of summer. It's easily walkable as well. read more

Let me first start by saying I'm not a huge golfer at all, like twice a year maybe, I'm still young though, so we'll see I participated in a tournament there yesterday. They have a nice 5 hole practice putting green as well as a chipping green. The driving range is directly behind those with about 15 slots to drive from. The range is only netted at the end, and on two of the course holes, range balls can be found scattered throughout. That part wasn't fun when looking for ones ball. The clubhouse is small and the bathrooms need a major major makeover for sure. Threadbare carpet and that overpowering "bathroom smell". Fees aren't crazy though so good place to play a round. The course itself looks like it's going through some major changes. Lots of cut down trees recently it looks like, and a lot of unfilled divots on every hole. Pretty good consistently fast greens throughout. Major work needs to be done on a lot of the golf cart paths as well. Very big root structures and crumbling going on. Like I said though, I'm newer to golf, but this course seems a little sub par, even to my untrained eye. read more

Talk about the best pure golfing experience I could ask for. The course conditions are perfect, the greens are challenging and speedy, and the practice facility is also great. I love that the clubhouse is or was (its been a year since I played it) a prefab building. So many courses try to attract people with so many useless amenities while the Classic just wants you to enjoy the course and that's what you do. Not to mention the best part of all, the extremely affordable rates. There is no excuse for not making a trip out to this course. If you like playing a course where the management allows 10 people who are "members" to go out as 2 five-somes, then this is your course. If you like to play behind two five-somes for 16 holes after you started with two holes open in front of you and wait on every shot, then this is your course. If you like to play in from 150 yards in unrepaired divots, then this is your course If you like to play behind a group of 10 in two five-somes that management allows with 4 open holes in front of them, then this is your course. And finally, if you like to play 18 in in close to five hours, then this is your course. Poorly managed, poorly marshaled, in need of repair, sorry state for what used to be a fun course. read more

I just found this course about a month or so ago and I am a big fan. Most of the time when I go I don't even have to make a tee time because there are so wide open unless there is a tourney or something. Lately when the high schools get out their golf teams practice there so the range can be kind of crowded around 330 to 430 but its not bad at all. The course itself is pretty nice, paved cart paths around the whole course. Fairways are always in good shape, yardage distances on sprinkler heads. The greens have not been the best, but I can't say that there always that way because i have yet to play the course during the summer months. OH YEAH!!! The best part is twilight starts at noon on weekdays!!! read more
