Okay, I know this is not the rating everybody hopes to get. This could just be that it is not my type of establishment. I don't typically go to these treats-only shops. But here goes. What I got was a snickerdoodle and a macaroon. Now, I've had snickerdoodles, and they have had a menagerie of flavors all blended into one. This snickerdoodle tasted like a brown sugar cookie. It just was not a snickerdoodle. That being said, it was a good sugar cookie lol. I didn't know what to expect with the macaroon. I am used to chewy, gooey coconut macaroons, but these look nothing like that. I knew I wasn't getting what I would expect, but they were strange; they broke in my mouth like a piece of plastic with a slight bit of flavor--I didn't like them. I tried a bite of the cupcake from the person who was with me. It was actually pretty good, but I'm not a big icing person, and the icing was the epitome of what I don't like--too sugary sweet. All this being said, I would take someone back for a cupcake just as an inexpensive treat, but I would have to go elsewhere for my coffee. After telling me she uses four shots in a drink and that she liked her coffee strong, I went with that advice. The coffee/espresso red eye I ended up with was weak. Well, I guess my strong is much stronger than hers. The other person I was with didn't enjoy the coffee experience either. So if we were to go back, we would definitely go to a different place to get coffee. Geez, I don't know, I didn't set out to say such things about this place, but... it's not easy being a small business owner. I know that, but honesty needs to prevail. The service was not bad; she's an owner-operator, and she tried to be very engaging. To me, she seemed a little phoney, or forced. Pleasant enough for sure, but she did seem to me a little pushy. She asked for feedback, wondering how we enjoyed our food. When I told her I didn't like the macaroons and that they just weren't what I was used to, I could tell she didn't receive it well. The whole time eating this strange-to-me food and not enjoying my coffee, the surroundings were just very void of comfort. It's not a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. My absolute favorite cupcake, cookie place. I've loved everything I've tried at this place for over 12 years now! They also have really good drinks and milkshakes. Absolutely not safe for people with tree nut allergies. So I can't eat there, but I went in looking for a treat to surprise my husband for his birthday. He doesn't like sweets, but loves red velvet cake. The girls there were so helpful with figuring out what I could and couldn't touch because of my allergy to hazelnut, and they helped me figure out a way to surprise my husband in a way that didn't involve using my epipen. I had heard good things about this store so we finally decided to take the family for some treats. Boy am I glad we went here. First of all we were greeted by a friendly young saleslady, who was very patient with us while we discussed our options and tasted ice cream samples. We decided there were too many delicious choices to just get one dessert a piece. We picked out six cupcakes. Two S'mores, Salted Caramel, Red Velvet, chocolate raspberry cheesecake, and a brownie cupcake. We also got some German chocolate ice cream, and a sugar cookie with toffee bits on top. We haven't eaten everything yet.... but let me tell you what we did have was amazing!!! Ice cream was creamy, strong chocolate flavor, with pieces of coconut and cake pieces. Yum! Sugar cookie had a buttery flavor, crisp on the edges, but soft and chewy in the middle. Frosting was a vanilla buttercream that wasn't cloyingly sweet, something some places fail at. The chocolate raspberry cheesecake cupcake was pure bliss. A fantastic soft texture, not at all like a muffin in density, but it didn't totally fall apart either. The chocolate was a nice milk chocolate and then it hits you with the raspberry filling, just right. The cream cheese frosting on top put it over the edge. Delicious!!! Every bite was on point. The second cupcake we tried was the brownie one. That one was very sweet, I would even say a little too sweet with the frosting. It was much more dense, probably because it was part brownie. It was not our favorite of the two cupcakes we tried, however our daughter thought it was above and beyond the best cupcake she tried. So maybe if you're really into sweet that's the cupcake for you. The other three cupcakes we have yet to enjoy, but based on everything else we tasted I have a feeling they are going to taste phenomenal. Lots of frosting! Good thing they aren't filled too, that would be overkill. I got the Phat Monkey, which was more of a chocolate chip muffin with lots of frosting, and just a hint of banana. The Better Than Whatever was, well, better Nice, moist chocolate cupcake with flavorful frosting and toppings. I was a little nervous to give this place a try based on reviews. The reviews kinda made me feel like "eh maybe I shouldn't go here" I actually had a different cupcake place picked out with better reviews to try but it closed early. So I went here and I'm glad I did. First off they have actually more then just cupcakes here. Icecream, drinks, cookies, lots of goodies to choose from for everyone! I got a chocolate raspberry cupcake with cream cheese frosting, my husband got there banana cupcake, and my daughter got one of there big sugar cookies. My cupcake was amazing! The moist chocolate cake and the cream cheese frosting seriously hit the spot. Sooo good! My husbands cake was also pretty good but I agree with some of the other reviews that the cake kinda was like banana bread. The frosting though amazing!! Last there sugar cookies AMAZING! This place really sells it with there frosting. Some of the best I've tasted. Only thing I would have like to see is more choices of cupcakes!! Like come on cupcake is in your name of your place and there was like 6 cupcake Choices. Next also a few other cookies. There was 3 cookie choices. Love the Cocoa Bean! Even when my husband and I were piss poor living in Rexburg, we would scrounge up our change for a weekly date night at the Cocoa Bean. My favorite will forever be the Ultimate Brownie and the Madagascar Vanilla. On our recent trip to visit my aging grandmother, we snagged six sugar cookies and toted them on the plane all the way home to Vegas-they're that good! My husband was patiently waiting for his sugar cookie when I got home from the airport! We visited the Idaho Falls location on Monday 10/30 in the morning, and I didn't catch the girl's name but the service was great and she was very kind. I would highly recommend checking out the Cocoa Bean if you are in the Southeast Idaho area. read more

Very nice staff which garnered it an extra star. I got a sugar cookie and the frosting was pure almond extract which wasn't mentioned and I have an extreme aversion to it so into the trash it went. I've written reviews about the Cocoa Bean Cupcake Cafe--the Rexburg location. And while I LOVE their cupcakes, I've been disappointed to visit them on Friday nights and find their selection lacking. Sad, sad. We tried the Cocoa Bean again this past Friday night and were met with a small tray of Better than Whatever. They had no other selections! And while they were at least fresh this time, it was curious that they didn't have more options on a Friday night. In fact, some girls came in for the first time, excited to read from the menu, only to discover that their selection included one type of cupcake, and while Better than Whatever may be a Cocoa Bean favorite, choice is always good! Let me clarify--I LOVE their cupcakes. But I want to encourage them to increase selection when they have the clientele to support it--otherwise they may find their weekend crowds dwindling. I'm not sure we'll be back on the weekend--we might save our cupcake cravings for the daytime. read more

I love the Cocoa Bean in Rexburg and this place is just as wonderful and is the only of the three in the chain that carries coffee. I don't drink coffee any more but I love their frozen lemonades, lattes, and the classic cocoa bean. There are dozens of cupcakes on a rotating schedule that are big and delicious. They are always helpful and friendly and also have soymilk substitutions. Always a pleasure to stop in. read more

Cupcakes! What a cute shop to buy something for a sweet tooth! I took home 2 cupcakes home to Jackson, WY for my husband and I to share and a Pink Lady (strawberry + vanilla) Italian creme soda for the ride home. I picked out the "Better Than Whatever" and the "Ultimate Brownie". They were both very tasty. The brownie one truly is a brownie in the "cupcake" portion and it had a chewy marshmallow layer and then some type of chocolate frosting. The Better Than Whatever was a milk chocolate cupcake with carmel and sweetened condensed milk layer with a vanilla butter-cream with toffee bits on top. Yum! The frosting on each of them was pretty dang sweet (duh, it's supposed to!) but I liked the portion of frosting used on them, they weren't completely covered in the stuff. Ultimately I favored the Better Than Whatever because the cupcake was SO moist and with the Brownie one it felt like you really weren't eating a cupcake because of the brownie part, I guess I should have expected that. But, then again I didn't ask about the cupcake before picking it.The red velvet looks super yummy! My Italian creme soda was prefect and the prices of everything were very fair for the quality of the treats you'll find. Service was fast and friendly. Next time I'm in town I would LOVE to try their "Cupcake creams"... cupcakes + Reed's Dairy ice cream? I die. Every time we visit Idaho Falls, this is a must stop place. The cupcakes here rival any big city cupcake place. Not only is the cake moist, and the frosting doesn't give you a toothache. Also, there is just enough frosting for the amount of cake. To top it all off, Cocoa Bean has creative flavors. During our latest trip, we made TWO stops to cocoa bean. My favorites were the grasshopper (minty chocolate) and the raspberry chocolate cheesecake. My husband loved the lemon blueberry. For the best selection, get there early, because we got there close to closing on a Friday, and there weren't very many left. Enough about the cupcakes, now they carry ice cream! The ice cream comes in two basic groups--the ones blended with cocoa bean cupcakes, and Reed's Dairy! I tried the huckleberry (Reed's flavor) and the raspberry chocolate cheesecake (cupcake flavor). I also sampled the love potion flavor (strawberry and chocolate) and it was a close second. The ice cream was so rich and creamy that I could taste the milk fat on the spoon. Yum. As a cupcake connoisseur, I have high expectations when it comes to cakes. This cupcakery did not disappoint. Me and my ladyfriend got the Bonnie bee and red velvet cupcakes. While the red velvet was just okay, the Bonnie bee was DELICIOUS. A good cupcake has a filling, while a great cupcake is able to incorporate a filling that accents the cake without overwhelming the rest of the cupcake experience. The coconut flakes mixed well with the hearty spice of the moist oatmeal bodice. The cream cheese frosting was also finger licking good. MUST TRY the Bonnie bee. read more

My husband and I are in town helping my son and daughter-in-law prepare to move across the state and after a long day of packing & moving furniture, we stopped in to pick up a sweet treat after dinner. The service was great and the shop was fairly tidy. The cupcakes were very pretty to look at but disappointing otherwise. The toppings were, for the most part, quite tasty, but the cupcakes themselves were dry, dull and tasteless. The entire thing should be good folks! We stopped by the Idaho Falls location and bought 6 cupcakes for a small fortune. I expected utter deliciousness. Unfortunately the cupcakes were AWFUL. The worst tasting cupcakes I've ever had. I'd rather eat cake out of a box. The "cake" part was not sweet at all and tasted like too much baking powder or baking soda had been dumped in. We got 6 different flavors and every cake tasted identically gross. The frosting helped disguise the nastiness of the cake part, but unless you REALLY like cream cheese, pass. I expected much more from a specialty cupcake shop. Sadly, I was really disappointed in my experience at Cocoa Bean. The cupcakes were overpriced for what they offer - a handful of uninventive flavors and small servings. I expected really outstanding cupcakes, and what I got was a small thing that tasted like it was made from a box mix. The frosting was dull, but presented well. The place caters to the Mormon population, and as a result, will succeed. But for those of us who are not swayed by the obvious pandering, Cocoa Bean is just not worth it.
