Wow I love this place! I come here for bingsu often with my Korean friends, and it never fails to disappoint. My favorite is the more traditional red bean (pat bingsu), but I've also tried the green tea, which to me is comparatively lacking in flavor. It's a very social space, so it wouldn't be great for studying. It's been packed every time I've gone in, but I've always managed to find a seat. The bigger alcove rooms have a sign outside indicating that they are reserved for larger parties on the weekends. read more

Convenience, décor, and service make The Coffee By Hand a local favorite if we're looking for a day café.There's another one less than a mile away that serves wine and coffee and is more suited for evenings in my opinion. I completely love the décor here. It has fairly large booths on the left that seat 4 with brown faux leather chairs instead of a wood bench. There are also slightly more private rooms that are larger on the right side. By private I mean there's a waist high brick wall covering half the room and some vertical tree branches attached. The center is very open with your typical industrial ceiling. Tables for 2 or larger bench tables and chairs cover the left half while glass top small tables and the familiar brown chairs are on the right. There are some center dividers in a nice deep cherry stain that go well with the other parts of the room such as the brown chairs and the floor tile. I like the look so much that I seriously went to Home Depot to find a similar floor tile for my kitchen. Ordering food and drink is done at the counter. You get a pager that lets you know when to pick up. Espresso orders are filled really quick. I haven't tried the food here, but the other patrons seem to enjoy it. This coffee shop is more than just coffee. They have cookies, small pastries, teas, cakes, and smoothies. It is very well decorated and has an urban yet modern feel to it. There are plenty of seatings for large groups and small groups. There is also a private seating room and the booths have sofas that are comfortable. The cakes can be bought in slices or a whole cake. The whole cakes are not large, probably 5-6" in length but are delicious. The drinks are high in prices; $5 for a small smoothie but I ordered the green apple smoothie and it was very good. It had a sweet and tangy taste like a real green apple. The cashiers are kind and provide good service. This place overall is very chill and their sweets and drinks are worth the price in my opinion. Cute cafe. Yummy shaved ice. The Coffee By Hand is located in the same shopping center as Sweet Hut (Pleasant Hill). Students are always studying here in groups, because they have relatively secluded areas reserved for groups of 3+. Lots of comfy seating and cute decor. I have only ordered the shaved ice at Coffee By Hand, and every flavor has been wonderful: mango, matcha, mitsugaru. I think my favorite is mitsugaru, but the other two aren't really that far behind. It's really just personal preference. Setting itself apart from other locations, Coffee By Hand tops their shaved ice with flavor powders. Mango powder. Matcha powder. Mitsugaru. It works really well. You can easily share the regular size order between two people. Otherwise, you can get a large or a cup. I highly recommend trying at least one of their flavors to see if you like it. Most of their baked goods look store-bought, but I think their Korean snack foods look pretty delicious. It's a relatively nice and quiet place seeing as how I went right before closing, however everything was way overpriced. I wanted their snowflake ice item at 1 am but they already cleaned the machines so I settled for a taro boba. It was limited to only slush you can't get it with ice; I don't know if it's the time I got the drink or if that's how they normally do it, but it's as I said, limited. I came here because scoutmob offers 50%. It's next to Sweet Hut on Pleasant Hill. Plenty of parking. It had good number of customers for late Sunday afternoon. Atmosphere is nice and perfect for a hangout spot. The menu consists primarily of coffee, tea, bakery and few meal items. I ordered taro smoothie (without boba) and honey cream waffle. They told me that the waffle will take ten minutes. I was in no hurry so I was fine with it. They gave me a buzzer and I took my seat. Quickly my smoothie was ready. Then in 2-3 minutes the waffle was ready (not even 10 minutes). The waffle was insanely good. Everything was made fresh. Waffle was delicious and crispy, whipped cream was thick and on point, honey drizzle was a cherry on top. I wiped out my plate. Two people could easily share this dish. Now for the bad part- the taro smoothie sucked. I didn't like it at all. It tasted weird to me. I love me some taro smoothie but it sucks here. So I'm giving it 4/5. read more

I absolutely LOVE the interier of this coffee/bakery place. I went here a couple days after their Grand Opening a while back. However, despite the spacious and confortable seatings, I wouldn't come back for their cakes and drinks. I got a strawberry smoothie for about $4ish. It was a small size and I know how they made the drink, it was similar to a lot of other places. They use already concentrated fruit puree in a box and it has artificial/natural flavoring. But it's all the same. Overpriced? Probably. I wouldn't pay for another one again. Although, it's expected because a lot of coffee places make smoothies like this. I wasn't impressed, bottom line. My friends and I also tried their small cakes in the window. Again, not impressed and WAY overpriced. The price wasn't living up to the taste. I got the smallest round cake in the window and it cost $20. Just looking at it alone, it didn't look like it was worth it. Granted, probably because they just opened, but I'd say they should sharpen how they make their cakes since theyre going to compete with Sweet Hut and 720 Bakery prices and quality. Once we tasted the cake, the yellow sponge cake was dry, the fruit pieces inside the cake were not sweet and hard to eat. The cake was wrapped in plastic with the logo and orange ribbon. It was hard to take off the cake and I think they can do without it. The whipped frosting was separating, indicating the frosting was overwhipped and we saw this on the other cakes in the window. Overall, I wouldn't buy any of their cakes here and rather buy one at 720 Bakery for its value and quality, which I have bought a couple cakes there. Anyways, if you're not here for the cakes, it's still a good place to hang and chill with your social group. Great spaces for big groups. Maybe their pastries and drinks have gotten better? I won't know til I go back again, but it's still a good place to just hang and talk after eating at the other restaurants in the plaza. read more

Ttokpoki and fruit bingsu are out of this world. Haven't eaten a ttokpoki that beats the one at coffee by hand. It's a great study and hang out place, but if you go during certain times, you might not be able to find a seat; especially if you come in with a big group. I usually get the Set A, which is a combo with ttokpoki and a bingsu. Strawberry bingsu is amazing; also haven't been to a place that beats it. Both the waffle and fish bread was baked to perfect crispy perfection . The Honey Waffle appeared as if it was something simple I could just make at home but, again, it was cooked so well and something about the batter made it amazing... would definitely like to go back and try other items! Reason for 4 stars is I was 'accidentally' the first customer of the day and the woman behind the register seemed to not be ready for a customer so I had to wait until I was greeted...it was awkward to the point where I asked "are you guys open?" Went here to see how their pour-overs are. $4.77 for a one-size is just slightly more than I was expecting, given no reputation for the bean or roast quality. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I watched the barista put the paper filter in, not wet it like you're supposed to, grind the Costa Rica beans (who knows how long ago they were roasted?) and fill it up, and then use the Hario kettle to pour the water (which I didn't see if he set the temperature for) straight down the middle of the grind. What. After the bloom settled, he covered the grind circularly. Fine. The Coffee By Hand may be inappropriately named. Either way, coffee was a little astringent but not terrible. Close call. This is a chill little spot. I like how the inside is decorated and they have semi private rooms for little groups with comfortable individual couches. They also have one really big room that has a sliding door but you must have at least 6 people in order to use that room. I see a lot of students studying here and it's really not that loud compared to many boba tea places and there's a lot of seating . This place needs to change their amenities and environment. Most of the sofas and chairs are outdated and ripped off. The owners are not polite and workers (i.e., every time I go people work there seem very stressed) told me the owners are NOT treating them well. They have a really bad attitude! If you don't order something within like 10 min, they will literally walk over to you and harass you about it. I was hoping for milk tea boba since I've been craving it for who knows how long, but the drink I actually got made up for it. This is a SUPER cute place! It's got a very open seating layout, but also has little nooks where you can sit with your friends and chit chat or study. I LOVE the large tables with the comfy armchairs. It means so much to have a soft place for my tush but enough room for my books. It's a lot quieter than you'd expect since it was pretty packed when my friend and I went in on a Sunday night. I just wish it wasn't so dark, but I suppose the darkness was good for the ambience. Great background music too!! Loved everything about the interior and seating - I'd just suggest to have a bit more lighting so I can see what I'm working on. The staff was very friendly and cheerful despite how crowded it was & how hard they were working :-) Onto the drinks: my friend got an iced americano and I got a green tea boba. I thought the green tea would come out as an actual tea, but it was much more like a smoothie/shake than anything. At first sip, it tasted a lot like Starbucks' green tea frap, but as I kept drinking it, I started to like it more! The boba definitely helped lessen the sweetness (the boba eventually got a little frozen due to the shake so I can't really say how great the quality of the boba was) but I could definitely tell it was a lot less sugary and a lot more creamy than the green tea frap at Starbucks. Fast forward two weeks, I find myself for the first time in their very cute store. Everything from this gigantic tree in the middle of the store, to the arranged stationary chairs, to the barn doors were so cute. I would say it makes for a great study place/meeting place. I ordered a vanilla latte and was not impressed what so ever. There was no aroma at all, not strong. It was basic to me. My fiance had a green tea smoothie and it was made from powder.. PERSON OF COLOR? READ THIS I have been to The Coffee By Hand a total of 4 times and 3/4 times I have been treated questionably on more than one occasions at this establishment. On the first occasion going with all of my African American friends, it was at least three hours until their closing time when we tried to enter and noticed their doors were locked. We waited at the door for a minute because we realized people were still working inside and customers were sitting down enjoying their drinks/food but instead we received a crazed expression and no one opened the door. Thinking the first incident was just a mistake, we decided to go back on another day. When I went with my friend, I noticed that most of the college students that go in there don't actually purchase anything from the menu but instead sit down to work on their schoolwork. On occasions like this the owner never approached those students and questioned why they haven't purchased anything (or bring in other drinks from a different cafe) and ask them to leave. A friend and I decided to work on some school assignments at the cafe and about 30 minutes into us working on our homework we were immediately questioned (by the owner) why we haven't purchased anything from the menu and asked to leave. I understood the situation at the time but looking back, the only African American people in the establishment were being asked to leave, although multiple people were doing the same thing we were doing. Despite this disrespect, my friend and I decided to give them another chance (keep in mind this was about a week later). The last day that we went was the last straw. My friend and I returned to the cafe to have a chat so we purchased our favorite drinks and then continued to find a table to sit and talk at. On this day there was a lot of people coming in and out and sitting down for long periods of time (2+ hours). My friend and I have also been sitting for a bit (about 2 hours) when suddenly we were interrupted by the manager who told us there was a time limit of 2 hours on the table. At first I didn't have a problem since we were talking for a little over 2 hours, until I noticed that the manger hadn't said anything to the multiple groups of people who were sitting longer than we had been sitting. Now I'm not saying that this establishment is racially biased but I also don't believe that all of these occasions are coincidences. So to all my melanin people, remember that first impressions matter and go with your gut if you don't think the establishment is worth your time or money. Note: When I walked into the cafe with my Caucasian and Asian friend, we had no problem ordering or drinks, sitting and talking for more than 2 hours. The owner NEVER approached us and the staff was happy to take our order. read more

Please don't go here if you are a person of color. My friend and I were asked to leave during our meal because we overstayed our limit. The owner approached our table 3 times within 1 hr of us being there. We ordered 4 drinks and one meal during our time there. He came to our table while I was eating and said we have been here for too long. He never approached anyone else, even people that were sitting alone or just as long as us. The place was not busy and there was plenty of space for others. We were naturally confused thinking it's a language barrier so we spoke to the cashier and even then the owner told me I was there too long. I asked him twice, would you like us to leave while I am eating...his response was you have been here since morning and look outside now. I got there in the afternoon and we had our laptops out like 90% of the customers there studying for my medical board exam. This owner is racist and has a backwards mentality about equality. Please think twice if you want to take your hard earned money to that type of establishment. Im very disappointed and never had anyone treat me such a manner. The two most notable things about this place are the atmosphere and the service. Both were not only extremely good, but have a mutualistic relationship with one another that only promotes the business as a whole. They workers there seem to genuinely care about your experience there, and the atmosphere give you a place for everybody - it has rooms where it is relatively more intimate, and there are also tables and booths for people wanting to have a casual cafe experience. I tried the Strawberry Smoothie and the Ice Cream, and both were above my expectations. The ice cream was pretty solid (which I liked) and the Smoothie was extremely good.
