This was some good coffee! This was our first stop off the train from NYC. We needed a pick me up and energy for that infamous food crawl we were about to get into. So thankful it was in the quiet and quaint neighborhood of New Haven. Such a beautiful area. Very close to all the spots I had bookmarked. Cool coffee shop I gotta say. Spacious and clean. Just the actual vibe alone was relaxing. This is one of those locations where you can actually come sit and not be bothered. Few people inside were working on their laptops, some were just conversing with their friends. The barista was super friendly and worked fast. One thing I noticed and was wowed on was they serve wine as well. I mean how cool is that. Order a lavender honey latte to go. I didn't have to wait for it or anything so service was good there. But I couldn't find parking easily and the latte was just alright. Not a lot of favor and no sweet at all which I thought that was interesting. The server did over to add more honey but I opted out because I was in a rush. They seemed business though. The barista who is a younger fellow with lots of silver rings was one of the coolest, most positive people I've interacted with in memory. What a welcoming, uplifting person. This is just a review for the lattes. My partner got the hot and I ordered an iced latte. The hot latte was overly under extracted, and the flavor was extremely astringent. I am an avid Yelp user, i use it to find cool little spots to check out when we are traveling. This particular location proved to be different from what I saw on Yelp that drew me to it. After further observation, I realized all the reviews I had read were years ago, I had not noticed that originally (before going). So, the place was different than described... maybe changed hands over the years but kept original profile...? Not sure, but it wasn't what we expected. The coffee proved to be good, but there were no pastries like what had been mentioned for the old establishment. Not a whole lot to offer except the good cup of coffee and some pre made egg sandwiches in a case. My husband didn't even have coffee because they didn't offer iced decaf. So all in all, if you're in it for a good cup of coffee without frills and cool decor, by all means, this is the place for you. But if you're looking to do anything except walk in and walk out, this isn't a very exciting place to be. In my opinion, they need to give the place some character. Also, was a bit taken aback by the barista behind the counter who brought coffees out while we were waiting and he leaned over exposing his hairy back and crack, (sorry, it had to be mentioned) and then proceeded to scratch. Stopped by for a quick coffee experience. Glad New Haven has a place focusing on quality coffee. I got an oat honey cappuccino which admittedly was good ( thought I've had better). They have a large list of pour overs for you to try and those were pretty tasty. There's a charming outdoor seating space and a patio to do some reading, soak in the sun. Great quaint cafe with a very relaxed vibe. The lighting is pleasantly dim, music is played at a volume that's easy to tune out and focus on whatever you want to work on. Definitely a sit down and wind down type of cafe. The one worker is able to handle everything efficiently and is super helpful and laidback. The açaí bowl is definitely one of the best I've had. A friend, knowing I like to try CT's best coffee spots, recently asked where I planned to visit next. I suggested I thought I had finally hit all of the big ones. As fate would have it, I Yelp-searched coffee shops while I was in New Haven this week. My No. 1 Search Result, which Yelp tailors to the searcher, was not one of the spots that I normally visit. With a 4.5 Star rating and 202 reviews, The Coffee Pedaler ("CP") was my No. 1 result.. People with different coffee and coffee shop preferences may see this differently, but I was a big fan of CP. I don't know the names of all the New Haven neighborhoods, but CP was in the upper State Street area, a few blocks south of the heart of East Rock. CP is a small and clean coffee shop with inside and outside seating, but it's not especially cute. The seating is more functional than cushiony. CP seems to value the quality of the actual coffee, which is what I look for. I normally drink coffee cold and black, and when I brew at home, I often choose bright and fruit forward Ethiopian or Kenyan single origins. CP's black cold brew was a Colombian-based coffee. It had deep, dark chocolate flavor notes, and it was very smooth. It was very well executed, even though it's not my everyday flavor profile. The person who helped seemed knowledgeable about CP's coffee, which is not always the case when I visit new spots. I noted some positive things about CP while I was there. First, CP was selling bags of Tandem coffee beans. Tandem is a highly respected Coffee Roaster from Maine. Second, I saw that CP offers pour overs so you are not limited to whatever one hot coffee they may be serving that day. Not every shop does that. These things reenforce my belief that CP is a shop that prizes the quality of the actual coffee. I can't speak to whether CP makes things like colorful lattes and flavored cold foams. They may, but that didn't seem like what they were going for. If that's what you're looking for, you may want to scan the menu before you arrive. I can't speak to the food, although I did notice bagels in a case. I also noticed several bottles of wine. Based upon my black iced coffee and my experience drinking it at CP, I'm rating The Coffee Pedaler 5 Stars. read more

Small menu with big results. Focus is on small batch and Atticus l so if you are looking for crazy coffee combos or "fake coffee" drinks this is not your place. Stopped by here on the recommendation of some fellow serious coffee drinkers and they did not point me in the wrong direction. Ended up with a cold brew-straight no chaser and it was delicious. Some cold brew with out nitro is so acidic and off putting but this was not the case. Small batch beans DO make a difference. Came on a Thursday and parking was not an issue. Went here today for the first time and it was alright. I'm not a big coffee drinker, but from what my partner said, his Latte was good. I sadly can't say the same for my hot chocolate. I thought I would like it, but it wasn't that sweet and barely had a chocolate taste. The service was fast which was good, but the ambiance was alright. It felt very gentrified if I'm being honest . This place is tucked away and may not attract people but once inside, you get transported. Coffee and wine is served, and people here like to be noticed. Not the staff, they are quiet and busy, non intrusive and content. I got a V60 Guatemalan coffee, and my buddy got a latte. The V60 coffee was really good, I truly enjoy places that use different systems for dripping coffee. Also, this place had several types of grains to choose from. I picked Guatemala, but they had a couple of Ethiopian beans, plus Colombian and Mexican beans. My coffee was excellent, I assume the other beans are excellent as well. The Coffee Pedaler is a really cute spot. We got there right when they opened at 9am, and did not have trouble finding a parking spot on the street. They have a few tables inside and outside for seating. We ended up sitting outside because it was so quiet inside that we felt awkward talking. They offer pour over, as well as your typical coffeehouse drinks. I ordered my go to, a dirty chai, and it was really tasty. My husband ordered a flat white and liked it (but wished he ordered a larger drink). We also shared an everything bagel with cream cheese, which was delicious! One on the few places where I have seen where you have the choice of coffee or wine available at a counter ready to be poured into a glass. Stumbled upon this place as we were put on a waitlist for a breakfast place around the corner which is rated one of the best in Connecticut. While we waited, we decided to go check this place out. Stopped in for a quick coffee prior to us going to another restaurant. I had the best chai latte of my life. I did add cinnamon and subbed oat milk. It's definitely a great addition to the Yale community. Almost every seat was taken with someone working on some version of a MAC book. There is a parking lot across the street that's $1 for an hour so it's convenient. I really think they should expand. It was a Saturday at 3pm and it was packed like a library before finals. I enjoy looking at the art displays and latest selection of neighborhood flyers while waiting for my drink order. It has a nice charm to it. They offer free wifi and plenty of tables, but the space is still on the small side (like everything else in the area) so it can fill up quickly. The vibe is grunge, elitist plus it smells like stale wood and unshowered hipster. It's Portland meets Northampton. Pour over coffee was bland, flavorless and acidic. Also $8. Quiche was $9. Total with taxes came to $18. Not worth it. Go to Whole G, Marjolaine or Koffee. Sadly, these types of coffee shops are more about the experience where you're paying for the privilege of having a safe space. The intention is good but it drives up the cost of real estate, displaces families and corrupts the very fabric of a beautiful neighborhood. read more

They were a little light on options which barrista profusely apologized for and explained they had an unexpected large demand on inventory this past week. What was great though was he assured me they always have Tandem Ethiopian, "it's a staple", ok great this is my place! Then to see he used a 4:6 method that almost no coffee shop has the patience for, great! The one suggestion I'd give is use a temp hold kettle, water seemed around 80c not 96c that the water machine read. I'm usually actually good with an 85c for Ethiopian depending on roast, but this was low. Either way the coffee had brightness and good character. Was a few hours ago so can't recall profile specifics, but not really point of this review anyhow. Bottom line is if you know the difference between a rao and 4:6 or you know that light roast Ethiopian pour overs should be a staple then this place is for you! read more

Very quaint, quiet, and small space. This feels like a place to get some work done not to chat. I am glad they have a few outside tables as indoor seating is relatively scarce and I'd feel more comfortable chatting with friends outside. We ordered our usual, requested as always, my oat milk latte made before my husband's espresso, and I was glad that was honored. It seems they were out of the flavored syrup I wanted and I also heard the barista say they didn't have the coffee someone wanted, I suspect supply chain issues. This place whips up a superb flat white (can't find everywhere in New Haven!) and steams oat milk to near-perfection (vegans and dairy free people take note)! The vibe is also lovely, and I like their standing coffee "counter" (a sturdy board on poles) for chatting outside. There is also outside seating which is lovely weekend mornings. Bagels are yummy and they have vegan butter and cream cheese options - awesome!! Though they were out of the latter when I was last there. Everyone working there is also so nice and friendly.
