This venue is one of my favorites. Each year we go to see https://www.startmakingsenseband.com at Christmas time. It is the only local venue that is historic, comfortable, and amazingly lovely. The seating is also wonderful, and I noticed when I was there to see the show, they are doing fundraising for renovations which is important for others to still have it available for future generations. My husband and I love this theater for its historical look and history! The seats don't go all the way back but the velvet cushions aren't bad at all. The ticket and snack prices post covid seemed to have gone up but are still decently priced. We watched Oppenheimer which was 3 hours long and had a divine time as everything seemed on theme! We were seated in the Berry Theater downstairs which was a bit smaller than the other theaters allowing for a more intimate setting. The sound system was great! read more

I snuck in for a quick sneak peek at the venue for this year's Blobfest celebration. The venue is AMAZING and offers all kinds of films, concerts, comedy shows. You can even set up a tour, which my friend and I scored as an impromptu one when we were there. I wished I lived closer because I would be there all the time. NOT CLOSED. Gotta hand it to the small, local and determined business to think-outside-the box in difficult times. COVID times. First, they offered online screenings of some pretty interesting films. Then, they added the option to come by and purchase concessions from them to eat while watching a movie at home. There seriously is nothing like movie theater popcorn, including those "movie theater popcorn" options at the grocery stores. Lastly, once they were able to open under the Governor's criteria, they offered an amazing option: For $100-125, you can rent their screening room style theater, the Berry Theater, for any one of the three movies they're showing that week, anytime from 1 - 8 PM Sunday - Thursday. Up to 12 people can attend and they give each of you a free popcorn. Oh, wow, a chance to go to the actual movies and not have to worry about whether I'm breathing in virus that I will take back to my elderly father. What a tremendous opportunity. Shortly after they began offering this, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan came on the schedule. LOVE this cult classic, so we signed up, brought some of our people 'in our pod'. The staff were fantastic, very accommodating, they had our popcorn ready and the theater was impeccably clean. It's very plush and comfortable, and you pass through two sets of doors to get in - it's almost like a speakeasy. We had plenty of room to spread out - it's a 65 seat theater - and then the movie started. Two hours of normal. Of before. Of just submerging into a great classic movie. Two hours of fun without worry. It was fantastic. That mental health break I needed after all these months of restrictions and tests and twelve extra things to think about when getting groceries. You bet we're going again, and again, and again, when movies come on schedule that we want to see. Thank you, Colonial, for creating this option. It's the best. read more

Best old movie theater ever?! The Colonial Theatre is the original standing movie theatre where a scene from The Blob took place. Since then, several million dollars were plugged into the facility which now has a grand piano in the concession area along with choice of wine, pre-mixed cocktails, or beer with your concession purchases. The main theater still has the feel of the 1930's and really brings you back to this time period. Now for the first time I got to see my most recent movie outing in the downstairs which almost looks like you are going into a secret lair with the beautiful brownstone bricks showing in parts of the movie theater leading to a very intimate movie going experience with not many seats so it appears like you right in your home but with luxury seats and a beautiful large screen right in front of you. I cannot recommend this theater enough, and when you are done your movie there are ample restaurants to choose from and stores to peek in. The Phoenixville area reminds me of my old stomping ground Manayunk. I enjoy coming here once in a blue moon and highly recommend you check it out if you haven't already. Came here to see Mat Kearney perform on Thursday and what a cute place this is! Definitely gives you old school vibes from the outside but the inside is gorgeous! It's super clean and drinks are at a super reasonable price! $5 for beer! They also had snacks too but I was full from dinner. I was on the waitlist for a ticket because this show was sold out since the summer! Luckily I got a call that morning that a seat was available and it was Row L - I wanted to be as close as possible so I was a bit disappointed. When I arrived though, the theater room he performed in was small so I was glad I was in Row L because it was still an amazing seat! It was a great show and everyone was so friendly. If it wasn't so far from me, I would definitely come back for a movie! read more

What a fun community gathering place in Phoenixville, PA! Saw John Waters there last night and even he noted that he was impressed with the theater and the town itself! Really fun experience! Tickets are very affordable ($11). We saw a movie in the main theatre (1903 Theatre). I believe it is still undergoing renovations. However, it had such a fun feel to the theatre. It was like being in a time machine! We sat in the balcony, which had a great view and was totally different from a standard theatre. The seats aren't as comfortable as modern theatres, but it's all about the experience! The bathrooms are very clean, as is the whole theatre. The screen, picture and sound quality are all fine. We enjoyed the movie, but mostly enjoyed coming to such a well preserved and maintained historic treasure. read more

If you're visiting the Colonial Theatre, DO NOT sit in the balcony--there are no railings. During a sold out showing of Jaws, a member of my group fell down the steps and was injured. This is because safety checks did not happen and no staff member noticed 200-300 people sitting in complete darkness for a quarter of the movie. I later learned a blown fuse was the culprit, and only after the person in my party was hurt, did the balcony lights get turned on. The person in my group was not the only person to fall during the screening--there was a man two rows below us who also fell--leading me to assume this is an ongoing problem and safety is not a priority at the Colonial despite the precautions that were taken during the pandemic. I do not take leaving this negative comment lightly as I was a supporter of the Colonial for almost 20 years--I'm a member, had my wedding at the theatre, and my family has participated in numerous horror-related screenings. We have spent an enormous amount of time at the Colonial, but did not sit this high up until recently and due to the crowds. Make sure to turn on your flashlight and crawl down those steps if you're in the balcony. But if you want to experience a movie with just as much history, may I recommend the County Theatre in Doylestown, the Highway in Jenkintown, or the Ambler Theater. All of them have railings! read more

There's nothing like seeing a new or classic film in an old movie house. I'm a total sucker for the experience and coming to the Colonial surpassed my high expectations. The most expensive ticket for a movie seems to be $10....which honestly is a steal these days. Especially when you consider all it takes to keep magnificent houses like this in operation. The promise of its ongoing expansion with added screening and performance spaces only adds to its draw. Be sure to check the website for which screen has which movie. The main room is the 1903, which has nearly 700 seats and two levels. There's not a bad seat in the room because of how far back the screen sits on the stage. The picture quality and the sound are top notch and nothing is lost in the vast auditorium. Don't miss an opportunity to see a film here. It's an experience you'll not soon forget. read more

AMAZING EXPERIENCE, going into an old fashioned theater is always a fun look at history but the Colonial Theater had a nice feeling of community with old black and white cartoons playing before the show started. In between the first two film the people hosting the event spoke with the audience, adding a costume contest as well. Popcorn and soda were good and though the amount of food for the same price as traditional modern theaters was a bit lacking the experience helped to lessen that blow. The only minor complaint is only an issue because I suffer from Crohn's Disease so having privacy in a bathroom is important, but the bathroom stall had big spaces in them where you can see whoever's in there. Bathroom was clean as well as the whole theater. Will definitely be going back and I'll bring my own cover for that. Check out the pub next door for good food (PJ Ryan's Pub) as a nice double experience in the area. read more

It's just the best place to see a movie. The old original theater is my favorite. It's a classic Art Deco spot but they bought the building next door and it's stunning and has two smaller theaters. Even at full price they only charge $10. Mostly they show art house stuff but on Sunday afternoons they show classic movies. So much fun . And Phonexville is now a great place to walk around with cool shops bars and restaurants . read more

Original theater is crummy (in the best way) and still looks basically the same as when The Blob was filmed there in 58'. Since I don't live anywhere near I only get here about once a month for the First Friday Fright Night programming, where they show B Horror flicks. Nothing makes me happier. read more

In the gorgeous one-screen treasure that is the Colonial, there is a palpable and lush sense of cinematic history that is rarely felt in this day, where the glorious movie palaces of yore are mostly relegated to the shadows of memory and to off-hand mention in Film 101 lectures. Years and years' worth of great films have paraded across the Colonial's silver screen since the theater opened in 1903, and I feel immensely lucky to live close enough to see many more years' worth of great movies here to come. I still remember entering it for the first time; it was truly a moment, that. The theater salon is cavernous, complete with an overhanging balcony and adorned in muted tones of crimson and gold and just the right amount of artful decay. Not only does it provide one of the best movie-watching atmospheres, but also a first-class movie-watching experience. The people that run it are masters at projecting properly, making sure sound is smooth, etc. Even down to the detailed newsletters they send out by email, you can see the devotion to the operation. They keep their single screen adazzle with an excellent continuing series of classic films, children's films, "First Friday Fright Night" selections, etc, to supplement their main feature of the week. It doubles as a live-music venue, too...some very interesting, eccentric acts have appeared here. And of course, there's Blobfest, which is always a delightful treat. (Those of you not in the know, The Blob features the Colonial. You remember, the theater that they all run out of, screaming bloody murder?) I can't recommend this place enough. Vertigo is playing this Sunday afternoon (11/15). If you haven't been here yet, that's a perfect time to start your love affair with the Colonial. read more

With the onset of the Googoplex theaters, its the hidden gems like the Colonial, that become the rare treasure, which deserves our awe and respect. The last time i bought snacks at one of the many movie complexes, that I often find myself in, I had to call the police because I felt robbed. When a bag of popcorn and a soda begin to cost more than the movie ticket, its time to start lining my already ample waist with smuggled goodies, like a Colombian drug smuggler. Popcorn and a drink at the Colonial? ...$5 !! that is a fair and reasonable price, and I would consider coming here for a snack, even if I wasn't going to catch a movie there. I came here for the first time to see a movie, this weekend ( I had been here before for concerts and to attend Blobfest.) and it was the perfect night. A perfect night in Pheonixville, consists of hanging out at Hipster Home for a spell, going to Ryans Pub next door for a few drinks with the unofficial Mayor of P-ville Dave F, and then hitting the Colonial for a flick. For everything I just mentioned, you probably only have to walk about 30 steps and parking in the area is easy to find and free or cheap. After letting Dave get me soused at Ryans, I was to meet up with my sister and her friends to see Monty Python's Holy Grail. Its a classic, and I was excited to see it in the theater for the first time, and at the Colonial to boot. In my wino-like state, the balcony was most likely a bad idea, but we had to do it and once i was plopped down into my seat, everything was fine. I actually thought it was going to be a more interactive experience ( Ni ! ) and there was a small group reciting along with the movie...only to be chastised by another small rival group. They labeled the mirthful group nerds and told them that they weren't at home. Its like they hated fun! I was too drunk to chime in, but I was disappointed when the " nerds" backed down and kept quiet. The entire experience at the Colonial is cooler than Steve McQueen and a gelatinous blob combined. I'm definitely going to look for some more movies to revisit in that grand theater. Don't miss out on checking this place out, and do it soon. read more

I had the chance to catch Suspiria last Friday with some friends. Honestly though, I paid more attention to the theater than the film. This place is like a time portal to the prohibition times; I even daydreamed Baby face Nelson bursting out of one of the exit curtains(?) with a Tommy gun like the movies. Furthermore, little details like how the rows have assign letters, a sweet balcony and one employee on duty sets this place apart from any other theater I've ever set foot on. Awesome. read more

How can you not instantly love a place that screens Monty Python's The Holy Grail? This place is great! Notice the usage of an exclamation mark! There I did it again! That's how excited I am! I love this place! And from the point that you arrive in the doorway, it is obvious they love you. And not in a phony, TGIFridays kinda way where they just want your business. This place is staffed by people who love what they do. They're excited by the film's they show. You don't get that at Loews or AMC. Quite the opposite really. If you have ever seen "The Blob," you have seen the Colonial Theater, as parts of it were filmed here. That fact, along with Mike Piazza, is Phoenixville's claim to fame. The theatre opened in 1903 and is the last remaining theatre of its kind in Chester County. The Colonial stays true to its historic roots, by showing a vast array of older films in addition to its selection of newer and independent movies. In addition to films, the theatre is also used for live shows. Recently I saw Livingston Taylor here and was pleasantly surprised by the acoustics of the old building. If you are into film and cinema, you should definitely take a trip to the Colonial Theatre. Tickets and snacks are both cheaper than what you find at the multi-plex, and you get a "real" theatre experience. --Check out the website for special events such as Blob Fest, which included a re-enactment of the running out of the theatre scene. read more

It was all I knew years ago. I've seen Jurassic Park and a number of other solid flicks back in the day. This was of course before 3D and Movie Taverns. But the Colonial. It's classic. remains classic. Appreciates Classic. I knew they started showing stellar horror flicks every First Friday, but I finally made it out to one. Poltergeist. Nostalgic film from my childhood. Figure skip the Blu Ray, see it in its entirety. It's glory. The showcased the original reel last Friday. That means pixelation. Graininess. No High Def. It was beautiful. I felt like I had been taken back in time. This was what my parents saw, I thought. Wow. The ticket prices were a tad higher than I thought, but it's only because this is a special occasion. The food and drink prices are right on. I feel when I go to see a flick anywhere else, my wallet is being destroyed like I went to a 5 star restaurant. Anyway, my only complaint is lack of recent flicks, but 5 stars remain. read more

One of my favorite spots in Phoenixville. Old time charm, beautiful furnishing/interior design reminiscent of movie theatres long past (no reclining seats, IMAX capabilities, or all those new amenities...). Still, it's comfy - enough for me to watch a 9 hour long horror film fest! And they screen both old and new films on 35mm film, no digital. Lovely place, definitely check it out. I've visited Colonial Theater several times and I absolutely adore this place. Every time, when I'm visiting this theater, its interior design gives me a feeling like I would go back in time; it's just gorgeous. In the era of huge cinema complex, it is a gem. I wish there would be more places like this. In addition to the look of this venue, the prices are great. Only 9$ for general admission and $7 with the student ID! They offer a great variety of movies (classic and new).The viewing experience is good. Sits are very comfortable and the sound system is excellent. This place is definitely worth a visit! This place is a real gem, very authentic with lots of character! My only complaint is that the character aspect extends a bit too far into some of the employees. I Attempted to have a normal conversation with one of the employees behind the counter at the concession stand ( there was no one else there waiting for snacks / wasn't busy ) I asked about the new area they had opened and she seemed confrontational and weirdly obtuse regarding my general questions about what the section had been and when it opened. 100% awkward and sad that such a historic business does not have more articulate employees to share the wonderful and developing story of the Theater. Will def return, but do not intend to be friendly / conversational with any concession workers. read more

Came here for the Blob stayed for the beautiful theater. Love how much the community supports this classic, antiquated, neighborhood jewel. if you like vintage theaters....this is the mother ship. My boyfriend and I love their Saturday series (can't wait for it to come back in October). Seriously, we get two movie tickets, popcorn, soda, and some candy all for around $20. Where else can you do that? And even at regular price screenings it's still cheaper than the theaters in King of Prussia, with the added bonus of being almost literally on our doorstep. The Colonial's programming is fantastic. I've been able to see my favorite film, Jaws, on the big screen thanks to the Colonial. Not to mention Indiana Jones, Groundhog Day, and all the other wonderful films they play (including newer releases). The Colonial is a true gem. It may be lacking some modern amenities, but the charm and the experience (and the prices) make that almost a non-issue. It's just a fantastic place, what more is there to say? read more

Finally got to have my first visit to the Colonial! The expansion work they've done is gorgeous - I particularly enjoy the high ceilings by the concession stand and the incredibly glamorous bathrooms. We saw "Attack the Block" and had an awesome time. I love the special programming they offer and that each of the three auditoriums has a different character to it. We didn't partake (because I needed some Butterfingers instead) but it's also really cool that you can purchase beer and wine if you'd like. Found free street parking easily and there were so many cool restaurants within walking distance. Also saw a lot of wonderful dogs walking around Phoenixville which is always a plus. The Colonial is a true gem in the heart of downtown Phoenixville. Affordable ticket prices (even cheaper when you are a member!), fresh popcorn at the stand, friendly staff and volunteers. I am a fan of the series that run on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Saturdays are usually a children's film--Willy Wonka, Elf, A Christmas Story, Back to the Future. Sunday matinees are classic films--the stuff that the AMC Channel used to show! I strongly recommend becoming a member. It helps the Association and the benefit of reduced ticket prices and an invite to the annual Oscar Party make it completely worth it! Also, the Colonial has concerts on a fairly regular basis. We saw Beatlemania there a few years back and had a blast. Also, the Celtic Festival held their evening concert in the Colonial--Enter the Haggis, Albannach both performed. read more

This is a great venue to see bands, comedians and movies. They constantly have a great rotating selection of films and some big names that play there. I saw the one movie I have always wanted to see on the big screen..."it's a Wonderful Life". I am extremely happy that the Colonial is almost restored its full glory. read more

This is an incredible place, so glad that they expanded to play first-run movies and sustain their operations. Grab a beer or wine before you find a seat. When you are in the Berry Theater, it feels like a cross between a speakeasy and a private showing. The 1903 Theater is a classic old-school theater, complete with balcony. The Colonial also shows art and classic films and various themed fests. It's even better when you become a member. The theater is also home to TEDx Phoenixville salons! I find regular movie theaters too LOUD and cold. The Colonial has given me a place to enjoy movies without getting a headache.
