We had a nice time on our MountNbarreL tour, but I want to set a few expectations for others interested in booking an e-bike tour in the Hood River Fruit Loop area. After some back and forth with the company's owner, Ali, we booked an e-bike tour for our family of 6. While there are several different tour options listed on the website, it was difficult to tell which option we were actually booking. Ali mentioned that with Covid, the current tour offering was more of a hybrid rather than one of the particular ones on the website. It was also very unclear whether our tour would be private or part of a larger group - when I asked the question, Ali's response was that there were 2 guides for 2 groups and that we could split off if necessary. As someone who likes to know what I'm paying for ahead of time, I felt a little confused by this but applauded her for keeping her small business running through the last year and went with it. Our e-bike tour consisted of a nice ride through the back roads of Hood River, 3 winery stops with tastings, 1 farm store stop, and lunch (no U-pick stops as the website mentioned). We had a really fun time on the e-bikes but overall felt that this tour lacked organization and information about the region. We have been on both bike tours and wine tours before and had higher expectations for this experience than we received (especially at the price point - higher than the other company in the region offering a similar experience). It was more of a guided bike ride than a tour. Our guide felt a bit scattered, we never quite knew how long we had at each place, the second "guide" for the day was a reserved teenager who didn't say much, let alone lead the tour, and we didn't come away with any fun bits of history or knowledge that are usually shared by a tour guide. We did end our day with a private vineyard tasting that was unique to this tour, and that was pretty cool, but other than that, we could have rented bikes in town and gotten much of the same experience ourselves without the time limit or price tag. If you're looking for a guided tour, this may not be for you, but if you want someone to schedule the day for you, lead you around, and stay in the background, you'll love this! My adult daughter and I loved the brisk bicycle ride in the beautiful Oregon countryside that was full of apple and cherry orchards. I'm 63 and the bike ride was great. I had to peddle hard a couple of times, but that was just part of the fun and exercise. My daughter had no difficulty. The scenery, and freedom to bike on the roads, was spectacular and something that just isn't available in the big city. The price tag seems a bit steep at first, but when you realize that the food and wine is paid for at each winery, it is worth every penny. While I normally do not have alcohol, unless it's in my dessert, I wanted to do something that the young people, like my daughter, would enjoy. MountNBarrel fit the bill perfectly. It was also important to me that MountNBarrel took us back to our lodging (extra fee, but worth it). After the bike ride, we went to the first winery where we were seated on a patio with a comfy couch, looking out upon the beautiful vineyard, while we ate an array of tasty appetizers and sampled wines. It began to rain, and because it was a little nippy outside, they offered us each cozy blankets, which made it all the more fun. Just when I thought it couldn't get better, the resident dog came up for a meet-and-greet, which was lovely since we were missing our own furry pal. But wait, that's not all. We went to two more wineries. The next winery did not have seating or appetizers, but the attention we received from the hostess was extraordinary. Because my daughter and I were the only ones in the bike group that afternoon, we got to ask all the questions we could think of about wines. They had a chocolate wine sauce that was so divine. They also had the most variety. The last winery, had appetizers that I would rate 5-star. In fact, I would go there just for the appetizers. The young lady that started the business, was also our bike tour guide and drove us to the 3 wineries. She was so very kind and gracious and in such fit condition that she would be able to go faster or slower for different groups. Ali was an AMAZING wine tour guide! We spent the day with her and two other great couples touring the local wineries in Hood River and Lyle. Ali's knowledge of the area, of the winemakers, and wine in general was amazing but the best part was her enthusiasm to show off the best parts of the area and to ensure her guests were all having a great time. She takes everyone's comfort and likes/dislikes into account when planning the stops and is flexible to the whims of the group as the day progresses. To top it all off she provides amazing meals and snacks to accompany the wine tasting and covers all of the tasting fees for the group! We did a winter shuttle only(no bikes) tour but when we come back some summer we will definitely do her bike or ebike tour, it sounds amazing as well, and is designed to be mostly downhill so any level of rider will be capable (they use the shuttle in conjunction with the bikes to make it easier) We highly recommend the shuttle only tours available year round and can say without a doubt that her mounted tours would be great as well! What a great day! I took my wife on a MountNBarrel bike tour for her birthday. She loves biking and wine so it was perfect. The scenery was beautiful, the ride leasurely, and the wine was excellent. We even went to a ciderery. The bikes were super comfy and did very well on the winding country roads and the short sections of gravel we traveled. I especially liked riding through one of the vineyards. I really enjoyed experieincing the area at a pace slower than going by car. Your really get a different feel. There is so much to love about the MountNbarrel wine/bike tour!! My husband bought tickets for friends visiting and myself (recently moved to Hood River). Driving up to the start was so picturesque with the bikes and picnic tables under the trees. We were greeted by owner, Ali and knew instantly we were going to have a great time. Ali gave a detailed description of what to expect and introduced us to Sydney, the other guide. They made sure we felt comfortable on the bikes, supplied and fitted us with sanitized helmets, answered questions, had us complete necessary forms, and served us a healthy breakfast to get us on our way. Each stop (antique store, blueberry u-pick farm, wineries) was a gem in and of itself. As we are sitting in the first vineyard, we were served a healthy and filling lunch from a local establishment (Remedy Cafe) that I hadn't yet tried and will be frequenting as a result. The ride was easy and I felt safe having Ali leading us and Sydney following us. Mid way through the tour, a shuttle bus delivered us and our bikes to the remaining stops for safety purposes. The views were incredible - pictures/Facebook don't do the tour justice! My only complaint, wishing Ali and Sydney could've sipped on some wines with us! The last stop was the perfect ending to the most wonderful day, and only open to members of the winery or those on the MountNbarreL tour. MountNbarreL even has the cutest gear (shirts, hats, etc) that we just had to purchase. The experience makes for a perfect gift or date, staff development activity, family/friend gathering, birthday or bridal party outing, way to explore the area, and excellent way to relax and enjoy the outdoors complete with great wine and food, fun and experienced tour guides, spectacular views, plus some light exercise.
