The performers were the best part. Super funny and quick on their feet, making stuff up on the spot that had us laughing the whole time. Good pick for families too. The content stayed pretty clean, nothing really inappropriate for a 12 year old, not that a typical 12 year old hasn't heard worse. They've got one intermission, free water, and a bar with snacks, popcorn, and drinks. The seats have cup holders so you can enjoy your tasty beverage while watching the show. Three people from the audience get picked to judge each scene from 1 to 5. They get chosen randomly before the show. Need to be at the tables at the front or in the first or second row to get picked, I think. Would totally recommend for a family outing especially if you have kids interested in comedy, high school drama class, SNL or similar. And Granville Island area is so nice to walk around it makes for a nice evening. Just keep in mind that the market closes at 7pm so arrive to island by at least 6:30pm to buy and eat your dinner, and then walk the 4 minutes to the Improv Centre. Or else skip dinner and eat Snickers bars and popcorn at the Improv Centre. Bought my tickets only the morning of the show. Easy to do.

My 2000th review!!!!…read more I didn't have much expectations for this theater. The exterior looked very rundown and old. First time here, and to watch a stand up comedy act by Jason Leong. Get here early as it does take a while for staff to check ID, scan ticket, and attach a wristband for alcoholic bar service. I was surprised to see the interior was totally renovated and looked quite opulent with all the red velour furnishings. The bathrooms are also renovated and there are more stalls now. There are two bar counters on each side with dining tables and chairs. Go down a short flight of steps to the floor area. There is also an upper level. It is a small theater, quite cozy. You can still see the show clearly even from the back. The acoustics for the stand up comedy is good. I like this place! Perfect for an intimate performance here.

If you're not sitting at the end you are likely going to bruise your shins walking through. Good luck trying to let someone pass without leaving the row. People have fallen flat on their faces trying to get out. It seems like a safety issue. As it's an older theatre, the floor is pretty flat. Not tiered like newer movie theatres. Recently went to a show where they posted no photos of the show were allowed. The security guards paced through the middle aisle throughout the show. It was pretty distracting. During concerts they remove about half the rows for standing room. Oftentimes though the balcony is closed off. Washrooms are on the second floor. Only 3 stalls in the women's washroom as one is forever out of order.

This festival of absurd and wonderful theatre is so much fun - even if you end up at a sucky show…read moreor two. But when you find a great one - trust me, lines from it can stay with you for years. One show I saw eight years ago (8!) called "Labrador" still sticks with me. The performer, TJ Dawe, is still performing, directing, and writing new shows at the Fringe, and he's a pretty reliable Fringe pick (go see Totem Figures, playing at Havana Restaurant.) Otherwise, it's fun just to go down to Granville Island during the Fringe with no particular ideas, and just see whatever is playing or whatever looks good. If you make a night of it, you can probably cram in about three shows, two with a dinner/drinks break. Shorter shows are about 20-30 minutes, longer shows run up to an hour or an hour and 15 minutes. If you really, really want to see something, advance tickets are a good idea, but every venue holds back some tickets at the venue, and the box office for each show open 50 minutes before the performance. I made the mistake of waiting til after dinner to purchase tickets for one show, and by the time I got there, they were sold out. Who knew a play about socks in the dryer (yes, socks) would be so popular? PS Experimental theatre may not be suitable for kids. It can be raw stuff. But you'll probably laugh, perhaps even if it's not a comedy...

Went to see Imrov Against Humanity last night at the Rio Theatre. What is improv against humanity,…read moreyou might ask? Basically, a hilarious comedy show that combines two of my favorite things: the game cards against humanity, and live improv. A wicked combo. You walk into the Rio Theatre - 90s hip hop beats are playing, the lively crowd is already drinking beer (the theatre has a liquor license!), and snacking on surprisingly addictive popcorn. The show begins by drawing audience member's names from a hat who then go on stage and play cards against humanity. The process is very much a two-way dialogue with the audience, and the crowd gets pretty loud as the booze flows. Then when the winning card is selected, top improv actors play out the scene. Hilarious scenes, and the best testament to the show is that the majority of the crowd is regulars who come back each month. If you have a good sense of humour, this is a guaranteed good time. But if you are easily offended, some content might grind your gears -- it is cards against humanity after all!

The website and calendar are outdated but company refuses to modernize it. I joined for the international travel but only went on 1 trip which was nice but I heard from others some trips were disorganized. It's a second rate organization don't waste your time and money. Ushers are quick in scanning tickets so lines don't long esp on cold rainy days. As season ticket holders, we get the same seats for every show and this is important for us knowing we have the same good spot. If you enjoy watching live performances, support this theater!
