Cozy, tavern-style spot we intentionally wandered into to for Sunday brunch, to celebrate the Knicks NBA win --and left as instant fans. The rundown: - Scones with orange marmalade and luscious, whipped butter (11/10), - Cheddar, avocado, and bacon omelette (also 11/10), - Pancake breakfast (10/10). They kindly added a side of blueberry compote on request and swapped our bacon for sausage. The pancakes were incredibly fluffy--such a joy to eat. Service was warm and efficient, and every dish felt simple but thoughtfully executed. Already planning our return--no question about it.
Commerce Inn is one of five restaurants in the West Village run by power chefs Jody Williams and Rita Sodi. It's a few blocks away from the other four (Via Carota, I Sodi, Buvette and Bar Pisellino), which are pretty much on the same block. All are wildly popular. Commerce does take some reservations but welcomes walk-ins. They are open daily for brunch and dinner. The Inn is located where Commerce St. bends and merges with Barrow St., a cozy area that also houses the Cherry Lane Theatre and its hot new restaurant, Wild Cherry (from the team behind Frenchette). Zimmi's, a newish French spot I tried last year, is also steps away. I'd say Commerce offers an early American menu befitting its early 1900's building. The Inn has a tavern with the bar, a few bare wood tables and booths and a small outdoor sidewalk space. There's also a dining room with tablecloths, wooden benches and chairs, and Shaker inspired bric a brac on the walls. The day's specials are on wall-mounted chalkboards. All areas offer the same menu. I dined at Commerce twice, for Sunday dinner and for weekday breakfast. The service for dinner was meh--not very attentive nor particularly friendly; the breakfast service was better. The host was great both times. On Sundays, Commerce offers a Sunday roast as mentioned on their website, but my server neglected to mention this and it was not listed on the chalkboard. I had to ask another server about it. It turned out to be a prime rib roast served a la carte with jus and horseradish cream. Luckily it wouldn't have been my main course choice anyway. For supper I ordered several dishes off the regular menu: cod cakes, artichokes, creamed spinach, half roast chicken with "fry'd" potatoes, spoon bread and a raspberry mess for dessert. The cod cakes were quite good, the artichokes (served poached and cool) were okay, a bit bland. The spinach was pretty classic and simple. The chicken had nicely crisped and heavily herbed skin, the potatoes were like steak fries but not very crisp. The spoon bread was spooned from a larger dish; it was a tasty, creamy cornbread. The raspberry mess was a delish traditional Eton mess with meringue shards, raspberries and whipped cream. I believe the weekday breakfast/lunch menu is the same as the weekend brunch menu. I ordered simply--fresh squeezed OJ and the pancake breakfast. The pancakes were 2 very puffy cakes served with a sunny-side-up egg and bacon. Very nice, but I think I prefer the Golden Diner/Golden Hof cakes because of their honey butter syrup. Overall 2 very good meals in a beautiful setting and neighbourhood.
First time here! We had a reservation but it still look us a while to get seated! I got the club sandwich which was the special of the day and it came with bacon, lettuce, onion, garlic mayo, turkey, avocado and tomatoes. It was a really big sandwich and it was only 25 bucks. It was super tasty and the bacon was candied which I loved. I also got an orange juice which was 8 dollars but it wasnt cold. The only down side was it was super loud in there even though it was not crowded and the food did take 20 minutes to come. The servers were really nice and we did split the check so he got double the tips. Overall I would come again but it is on the pricey side.
Weekend brunch review: we stopped by and put our name in for a table for 2. 1.5 hour wait, they took our number and we ventured off to find coffee elsewhere and window shop. Eventually got notified of our table, and we were seated at a cozy table in the front bar area. Loved the warm, colonial-inspired decor and service (and servers' uniforms). I ordered coffee, daughter ordered tea. Different server brought us both coffee and seemed slightly irritated when thanked but advised of the mistake. She left both coffees. About 10 minutes later re-appeared with the tea and took one coffee away. Ordered the farmer breakfast and the pancakes with side of bacon. Farmers breakfast: eggs and toast were good. Potatoes were greasy, limp and tasteless. Served either choice of peas or beans - I chose beans. Tasted ok, but not really my favorite at breakfast (but I guess aligned to the colonial theme?). Pancakes were delicious! Definitely would order those if you come for breakfast. Bacon never showed up. No sugars were offered with the hot beverages, and no salt and pepper. Bottom line, for us, this was a mediocre experience. Plenty of great reviews here but was a miss for us. But with a reservation or shorter wait, I'd be willing to try their lunch menu items another time!

I of course came to try their pancakes. As a bit of a pancake connoisseur myself (they're my go-to order), I thought The Commerce Inn's was worth the hype. It had that fluffy texture similar to a Japanese souffle cake, with edges that were delightfully crisp. The berries were plump, sweet, and a little tart, and even with the side of syrup, none of it felt cloying. The dish came with thick cut bacon and a side of egg, cooked to your preferences, and both were great. Would I return here again? Definitely. Although the wait times can be long (45 minutes), I would take a chance at bar seating just to have their pancakes again or even trying the other dishes on their menu.
I'm a big fan of the Via Carota team (I know, what a unique opinion!) and had been wanting to try this spot for a while. Came with a friend for lunch on a Tuesday. We walked in at around noon and there was no wait, though the place was pretty packed. Buttermilk pancakes were good but skippable imo. The patty melt was PHENOMENAL and the main reason to visit. Date toffee cake was also great! Would return for dinner to try more savory dishes.
Higher-end American dining restaurants usually don't impress me since I prefer more bold cuisines, but considering that, I do think Commerce Inn does a nice job of experimenting and executing craft. The cheese toast is the best thing honestly. Essentially just an adult grilled cheese. Not sure if it's on the menu anymore, but if it is, I recommend! Very fresh ingredients across the table. Tender meats. The interior nailed the colonial era as well--I don't know too many restaurants that commit and pull it off like that.
came here on a Monday for brunch and it was so lovely! You don't even feel like you're in NYC. The ambiance is cozy and comfortable. The service was good. We ordered the oysters, smoked fishes, farmer's breakfast, and the buttermilk pancakes. I would come back specifically for the buttermilk pancakes every time they are amazing. Will definitely be back!
The pancakes lived up to the hype!! Both my husband and I had the blueberry pancakes with a side of hashed potatoes, which were also so flavorful. The OJ was fresh - but if you aren't into pulp you'll want to skip it. I got the spiced iced coffee which was very tasty. Atmosphere is super cool, in a nice quiet neighborhood. They were able to take us about a half hour before our reservation, and it did seem like people had luck with walk-ins, though it was a Monday morning. Definitely recommend the brunch!
We came here for brunch on a Saturday after our morning run, without a reservation, and were seated right away. We ordered the Farmer's Breakfast, the half roast chicken with fried potatoes, the chef's special blueberry buttermilk pancakes, and fresh orange juice. The Farmer's Breakfast was just okay for me, it was a bit too greasy, though I appreciated that the sausage is made inhouse. The roast chicken was tender and full of flavor, but the fried potatoes were overly oily. The highlight of the meal was definitely the chef's special blueberry buttermilk pancakes its light, fluffy, and delicious. Service was on the slower side. We had to flag someone down a few times for water refills and other requests. The restaurant is nestled on the quiet neighborhood. It was clean and has cute interiors.
Had a very pleasant brunch on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon here. By the way, I just love that area of West Village, the restaurant is kind of tucked in among stately, aged townhomes and the Cherry Lane Theatre. There was another restaurant here years ago, which I only went to once, but I have a feeling and I hope that The Commerce Inn sticks around for a long time. When you step in, it's like you are transported out of NYC. Some say shaker style, I say colonial chic. The period details are so incredible that it's almost like you are in a theme restaurant in a good way. We chose to go with the classic brunch options - blueberry pancakes, leek omelet, and I had to have some greens so I ordered the spring salad per the waiter's recommendation for a lighter salad. Don't you love that feeling when you order everything right? I got that here. No regrets nor disappointments with any of the dishes. While the pancakes here are wonderful, the pancakes from Clinton St Baking Co still holds the #1 spot in my heart. But I have to say that the pancakes here are fluffy, not dense at all, with a slight saltiness to combat the sweet blueberry compote, which I thought was a tad too sweet. I was surprised by the leek and goat cheese omelet. Wow, I had no idea what an amazing combo that is. And the eggs were souffle soft and the omelet just melted in your mouth. Next time I try to make an omelet at home, I'm going to try the leek and goat cheese filling. The spring salad was so generous in serving size that it was a struggle to finish, but what a gorgeous and aptly named salad. Next time, I would ask for dressing on the side because the micro greens got wilted by the dressing. Oh yes, there will be a next time at The Commerce Inn. It wasn't busy at all on a Tuesday around 1 and we had a leisurely brunch. For weekend, you'd need a reservation for sure as we tried walking in one time, and there was no room on the waitlist. My only gripe is that because the weather was so warm, the AC was on full blast. The AC vent was on top of us and I was pretty cold, which kind of ruined the colonial time vibe for me. My husband on the other hand said it was comfortable, but he did get cold by the end of the meal. Other than that, great service, beautiful setting, and delicious food.
My friend was in town and we heard this place we good. It's on a really sweet street, feels like the neighborhood corner on Sunday. Beautiful too. We heard this was an easy resevation to get but she was visiting last minute so we decided to walk in. We showed up as they opened and got one of 3 tables outside. It was beautiful. Service was fast. The drinks were great, I loved the spiced coffee (I normally drink black coffee, maybe a little sugar), we heard there were scones so we ordered those, the were great, on the drier side if you like them that way, the marmalade was incredible. The omelette was one of the best we had ever had. Honestly could have split between two as well. The potatoes were great, but not the star of the show. The blueberry pancakes were so moist but most importantly there were TONS of blueberries. Only thing I will say is we couldn't finish it all, probably could have skipped one thing and that would have been the perfect amount. Would definitely com back!
I was able to snag a resy for brunch here on a weekday and good thing we did because wait time was up to 30-45 mins! After looking at reviews, we decided on the chicken and the pancakes and a gin fizz. The drink and food were all solid but I personally didn't think anything stood out to me. Definitely still a solid place to come to in the West Village though!

this restaurant transported me to the coziest English wooden hut! the service was amazing -- everyone was friendly and hospitable. the pancakes were buttery and soft. the savouriness of the pancakes and maple syrup was such a delectable treat! the coffee was more acidic and was clearly brewed from great coffee beans. we heard that there are divisive opinions about it but we thoroughly enjoyed it. read more
Ordered: Blueberry Pancakes (~$26) Farmer's Breakfast (~$25): two eggs, hash potatoes, shaker beans, and toast Spiced Iced Coffee (~$8) Fresh Orange Juice (~$8) Aya's take: The Commerce Inn has been around for almost 5 years now but I feel like have only recently been getting busier and going viral. The team behind other West Village favorites like Via Carota, Buvette, and I Sodi is behind this so I knew we were in for a treat. I stopped by around 9:45am on a Sunday and to my surprise, there was no wait for a table for 2. That's totally different from another time I stopped by around 11:30am and was given an approximate 3 hour wait time (which turned out to be 1.5 hours). I didn't wait then and I'm glad I tried my chances a bit earlier this time! We got their Blueberry Pancakes which are so picturesque, thick, cakey, and not too sweet. I loved the sweet/tart balance of the blueberries with the cream on top. This is definitely a dish to share; I think I would've been overwhelmed after the first pancake. The Farmer's Breakfast was also quite delicious! The two eggs were perfectly soft scrambled and buttery, the has potatoes were a nice complement, and the toast was fresh. This definitely my first time having shaker beans during breakfast and honestly, I didn't mind it. It didn't add much personally but it also wasn't bad. The Spiced Iced Coffee was decent but definitely think it should be a few dollars cheaper. Same with the Fresh Orange Juice which was actually separating into layers making me question its freshness. It was more watery on the bottom and foamy on top. I've had tons of fresh OJ before and have never seen it so non-cohesive like this. Good try overall! read more
The blueberry pancakes here were insane. They were so so soft and there was almost a little crunchy exterior from the sugar. The blueberries went so well with the pancakes. The smoked fishes were pretty good as well, interesting flavors that all went well together. I also ordered the steak and eggs which were just alright. I think i found my favorite pancake spot. The pancake breakfast had the perfect sized pancakes - they were so fluffy, moist, and rich in flavor. the berry compote was so fresh. the bacon was thick and crispy. an absolute banger of a spot, definitely going back! The pancakes go crazy and look like a cartoon. The orange juice is also so interesting (pictured). I was able to get a bar seat at the last minute because I was a party of 1. They were jam packed on a Saturday - worth the wait! read more
They have the best vibe here for sure. The service is also great and their attire very much fits the vibe. The pancakes were pretty good. Very fluffy and light. Would recommend coming here for sure on a cozy morning or evening. read more
I cannot say enough good things about the Commerce Inn. Genuinely this was my favorite breakfast I've had in the city, and probably the best pancake I will ever have. The restaurant itself is very cozy and it made me feel like I was stepping out of the city. I highly recommend a reservation if you have a large group, but if you're coming solo or with a plus one, I recommend getting there right at opening to snag a bar seat or a seat in the tavern area. The service was great, they also have specials posted on a chalkboard on the wall. I will definitely be back here as soon as possible! read more

Overall rating: 4.4 Really cool, old timey bar - 100000% out of place wearing jeans. I just went in for a cocktail & the bartenders were nice, but I felt so out of place. I've never missed Brooklyn more. I probably won't be coming back but it did look nice for stiff, uppity, fancy people. read more
Very good spot for brunch. We came on a Sunday morning, and we were told that a table for 2 would be a 30-minute wait, but we ended up only waiting 15 minutes. The goat cheese and leek omelette is fluffy and creamy and savory; there were a few bites that were a bit salty, but the overall flavor was very good. The blueberry pancakes were not too sweet, and the pancakes were fluffy and custard-y and very good even by themselves. We also shared a pot of Commerce Breakfast tea, which seemed like a lighter black tea with hints of vanilla and fruit -- it was interesting and layered. Service is also friendly; we didn't feel rushed even though it was peak weekend brunch read more

This is a cozy West Village restaurant that I assume used to be an inn where people stayed according to the name of the place. I came here for breakfast without a reservation. They take a few walk ins a day. There is a front seating area and back. The back is set up with table cloths and it looks pretty while the front tables have no coverings and are just wooden. I sat in a small booth it was cute and cozy for one person. This was my first time here, when I ordered a coffee I asked for cappuccino but they don't make espresso drinks only coffee. So I got the spiced coffee which is coffee with cinnamon. It was pretty tasty. For food I got like a pancake egg sandwich it sort of looked like. it was two small fluffy pancakes with an egg and bacon with it. The bacon was tasty and crispy, just the way I like it. I do wish they would put the egg on another plate or have bigger plates. Or put the butter on a side plate. I didn't want the egg to mix with the butter. Oh well. I tried my best not to let the egg run into the butter. My waiter was nice and somehow remembered all my allergies and my order without writing it down. Good for him. I would come back and try out other types of pancakes or something else. I would also come back and try one of their cocktails as they look to have a very nice bar area and could make great fancy drinks. read more
Went to The Commerce Inn for breakfast and really enjoyed it. The pancake was delicious, it was light, fluffy, and perfectly made and the farmer's breakfast was just as satisfying. The ambience is cozy and inviting, with a European charm that makes you feel like you've stepped out of New York for a bit. Service was warm and attentive, adding to the overall experience. I'd love to come back for dinner sometime, as I imagine the vibe would be just as lovely in the evening. read more

The Kedgeree was interesting. It was smoked fish mixed with rice and peas. It was a strange combination honestly, but it did taste good yet I wasn't fully satisfied. I don't think I'll be getting the Kedgeree again I'm not that familiar with British food except for the popular items (fish and chips, etc.), so maybe it's that. I think I'll try their pancakes next tho! The coffee was good but a bit strong for me. The interior of the place is gorgeous tho! Came here right after it opened at 9:15am on a Monday when I didn't have meetings. Servers were very welcoming, let me choose where I wanted to sit, and promptly took my order. The interior of this restaurant is much like I Sodi (same owner) which is very cozy with wood finishes. I got the pancake breakfast with my eggs scrambled soft and to perfection. Pancakes were so fluffy and not dry at all. Servers let me read while I dined alone peacefully. 10/10 will be coming back with friends to try their dinner menu! read more
I had dinner with a friend on a Tuesday evening. We were the first ones there at 5:30 but the restaurant quickly filled up. The decor is inspired by Shaker style and offers a warm, rustic, and cozy ambiance. Service was excellent. Hearty, well-crafted dishes. We shared our meal, starting with the chicory salad, tomato pie. We then ordered the bone marrow with French fries. All delicious. I had a glass of white wine and my friend ordered a martini. The interior is so cozy and warm and feels like something off a tv set. The kind of place you could catch up with a friend on a rainy day or come in alone to read a book. What I ordered: Farmers breakfast Blueberry Pancakes Spiced iced coffee All of it was delicious! Don't listen to the people saying it's overhyped. It's pricey but it's worth it for the food, ambiance and service. read more

Quaint brunch spot in the West Village from James Beard award winning chefs Rita Sodi and Jody Williams. I went with a regular so we knew what to order, including off menu items. Get the orange juice - it's simply magical - so light, fluffy and naturally sweet. Best orange juice you will ever drink. The off menu scones were classic with the star being the accompanying orange marmalade. Get the pancakes WITH the added blueberry topping. The excellent base of pancakes just need a little saucy something. Ps if you want syrup, you need to ask for it (they don't serve it with). In my opinion they needed a little bit of syrup, not much thanks to the blueberry sauce. Not the best pancakes in the city but better than most people could make at home. Let me be clear: this pancake fixed me. My bestie and I found ourselves in the West Village at the most life-changing breakfast of our lives. We wanted charming, girls brunch vibe and found a cozy little table barely fit for one by the window. The kind of window where the glass looks bumpy and worn, almost like you're peeking into the past. It reminded me of the Bodleian Library windows, with a darling view of the lane; definitely, a view worth preserving. Just dreamy. The sweet, coy waiter brought us a beautiful rustic-modern minimal menus. Looking back, his smirk suggested he knew the items on the page would come out from the kitchen and make us crash out our tastebuds. So we did the ridiculous: we ordered the $25 pancake breakfast because YOLO or WINY (When In New York, obviously). And to be fair, that's a great price for the best anything I've ever had; especially, in NYC. That pancake? It unmade and remade me. I think there were eggs? Honestly IDK. My body and mind disconnected the second I took my first bite. I blacked out over the best syrup and butter of my life. Multiple times we had to stop eating just to gasp and stare at each other, as if to validate that this moment was real. At one point I told my friend, "This is the moment I'm going to think about before I die." I panicked, thinking maybe we were in that last moment already, but at least I was glad it came with this pancake. When it got too existential, I took another bite to numb my soul in the most beautiful way possible. Even the portion was perfect --I was satisfied but could still manage a few thousand touristy steps immediately after. And listen lol, I don't even like bacon. But I liked this bacon. The pancake had me saying, "Even the bacon is great." What was that? We commented we loved the silverware, the ceiling, the bathroom...the pancake put us in such a good mood like we were under the influence of life being too beautiful. If I lived in NYC, I'd be a full-time West Village girly and visit this place daily. Confession, while eating that pancake, I pulled up Zillow to see the closest I could live to the restaurant and the prices really sobered me up lol. But going forward, bestie and I declared that this pancake is now a must stop for every trip to the city. I even took up four pages of my travel journal to process this pancakes experience. If you're still reading this, here's your warning: Pancakes have NO BUSINESS being this good and messing you up like that. The Japanese-style thickness, the crispy edge, the fluffy middle, the outside, inside, everything -- it's like they took every good pancake trait and turned the dial to better. I like pancakes, I like breakfast, I am terrified to learn they can be this good. We had to talk ourselves out of going to breakfast there again the next morning. I kinda regret we didn't lol. $25 therapy 10/10. read more

I'm not a big pancake person but I'm still dreaming about these pancakes... Tucked away in the corner of West Village, this place is the coziest & classiest brunch spot for the girls! All of us got the pancake breakfast and it was absolutely amazing. The pancakes were crispy on the outside rim but soft and fluffy on the inside. Perfectly balanced with a sunny side egg & bacon on the side! Incredible service but definitely make a resy if you want to check this place out. We came on a Monday morning and it was packed!!
