First off, the inside of this restaurant is gorgeous! It's a restaurant at the front then a HomeGoods/furniture store in the back - worth coming for this alone. Came here for dinner with a group of 10 people. I will give them credit that it was originally 6 but we walked up asking to change it to 10 and they did accommodate us outside; however, the service was slightly lackluster. They messed up multiple of our items and it took a bit of time but once again they sat us so that was appreciated. The steak was cooked perfectly-- super smooth and easy to cut. The little gem salad was good too (usually not a salad person). The real stars of the show were the desserts. Occasionally I enjoy fancy restaurants; mostly for my birthday or for a last-minute catch up with a bestie who is in town for a day or two. By fancy, I don't mean the corporate-card spots like Le Bernadin or the always buzz-grabbing Carmellini ventures. I mean acclaimed destinations like Grammercy Tavern and Penny. Which brings me to La Mercerie at Roman and Williams Guild in SoHo (dinner; Thursday, 26 March 2026) La Mercerie feels elegant without being precious. Warm wood, linen, brass, ceramics, and softly worn finishes give the room real texture and ease. Part of the appeal is the volume: the ceiling is notably high and uninterrupted, with long painted beams, exposed ductwork, and suspended fixtures that draw the eye upward. It suggests a European café or dining room, but not in a stage-set way; instead, it feels lived in, layered, and quietly polished. A bevy of gentle lighting at many levels and balanced proportions keep the atmosphere composed. Nothing is flashy, yet every part of the room feels considered. Service is impeccable; at times may be just a bit too attentive. Every dish of the three courses my companion and I ate looked lovely on the plate with sapidity matching the presentation--a rare thing! Might we have been lucky that evening that the salad greens were especially fresh, or the minced beef seasoned with finesse? Who knows. If I had to quibble, it would be that the cocktails were more intriguing than the wines-by-the-class selection and the banquette seating could use more legroom. And, service here was amazing. While I'm sad to say I couldn't catch the name of our amazing waitress, all of the staff here were so kind and I loved chatting with them. In addition, while I was a bit anxious about just ordering one cookie to share with my friend (and no drinks or anything) to chat for a while at the restaurant, the staff didn't make us feel pressured or bad at all for not ordering more. I went to get their infamous cookie thats been buzzing around social media and I must admit it was worth getting; when you go inside, you can go to the side of their coffee brewing area, and you can order the cookie from there. The staff there are all very friendly and nice and they can direct you to the area as well! The cookie has a good weight to it, and there is sea salt sprinkled on top; it had hazelnut and chocolate and rich buttery taste. Compared to photos I saw online it looked like mine was not ready/just looked different. He had that half-French, half-family-office energy that says *I have a house in Eygalières and opinions on natural wine*. Spoiler alert: en français, c'est de la merde. I asked, "Excusez-moi, puis-je vous demander une cigarette?" mostly to see what would happen. He pulled out a silver case, the kind you only own if your family still summered pre-euro. That's when I remembered I had Scott at Barry's the next morning for hill sprints, but I also looked devastating with a cigarette, so I figured God would grant me a waiver. I didn't light it. I just placed it between my Rouge Dior lips and asked, "How do I look?" Full Clinton. I did not inhale, but I looked like I could ruin a presidency. He smiled, bought me a glass of Burgundy, and we agreed to meet Friday. Scott was still carnage the next morning. Some battles you lose on purpose. La Mercerie was the kind of restaurant that whispers *you're still going to be hungry*. The room glowed like a Parisian fever dream, all linen, plaster, and curated restraint. They charge for bread, which is either obscene or erotic depending on your relationship with scarcity. Eight dollars for baguette and Bordier butter that tasted faintly of ego and Guérande. The menu read like a love letter to portion control. Baked eggs in cream and mushrooms, cabillaud cocotte with mustard, heritage chicken so crisp it should have been insured. Jean-Marc mentioned he was "a creative," which in New York means impeccable taste in lighting and seating but no actual food in the apartment. The foie was silk, the cabillaud delicate enough to make me briefly reconsider my life choices, and the check could have covered two months of Forma reformer sessions. Somewhere between the pommes purée and the tiny, poetic dessert, I realized the food was extraordinary and the man was decorative: lovely to look at, pleasant to be near, but likely to call his mother for bridge loans. Outside, he kissed me on the cheek and said something about "energies aligning," which I translated as *my trust disperses quarterly*. I nodded, smiled, then walked straight to Lucia Pizza on Canal in heels, like a woman reborn in grease and clarity. Sometimes God gives you a Frenchman to test your discipline and a slice to remind you of your values. La Mercerie: 4 out of 5, divine, delicate, the kind of beautiful that never sustains you. The interior of the restaurant was beautiful! We absolutely adored the high ceilings. All the staff were so so so patient, nice, helpful, and did not bother us at all. We came for brunch at 2pm and stayed past 4pm and nobody rushed us throughout our entire meal. Everyone was so kind and they even took pictures for us! The aesthetics of the restaurant were perfect for our birthday brunch vibes! Food wise, their desserts are the star of the show! The cookies are just as good as everyone says. They are so gooey and soft on the inside, and perfectly baked and topped with sea salt. We loved the melted chocolate inside the cookies. The vanilla ice cream inside the Profiteroles Au Chocolat dessert was also so refreshing. Plus the dark warm chocolate drizzle was fun to watch and videotape! A great compliment to the rich milk chocolate cookies. The fresh fruit cake was so good because it had apples and I love apple flavored desserts, tho it was a little bit on the sweeter side. They also gave us a free sorbet for my friend's birthday! Entrees wise, everything was alright. I got the salmon toast, and it was good. We tried the salmon crepe with leeks and a creamy beurre blanc . We had the salmon on the side usually it comes in top of the crepe as I'm not a huge fan of salmon . The sauce was so good . Creamy and buttery. The crepe was buckwheat and nice and thin. All of together was really indulgent and very decadent. I tried a little of the salmon and it wasn't too fishy which I usually find it. The French onion soup was outstanding. Served in a little copper pot. With all the heavyweights, bread, cheese and this one had cognac . So much depth to the broth. Buttery and cheesy. Delicious. Lunching at La Mercerie was a dream come true. A stylish restaurant in a beautiful furniture store is unusual especially as everything can be bought. I wanted the domed vegetarian onion soup which was piping hot and flavorful. I tore off pieces of the puff pastry which was crunchy and had a balance of textures. Crisp skinned chicken, peas and mushrooms in a pool of sauce followed and for the high price was rather small. But after the soup, I was getting rather full. Dessert was a house made plum, apple and cardamom sorbet. The flavor pairing was unusual. I also took a chocolate chip cookie to go. These cookies have praline in them and are popular so I reserved one when I made my reservation. There is an extensive wine list along with mocktails, coffees and teas. La Mercerie is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even though the menu is limited, one can eat very well. Service here is professional and friendly. Cole and Charlotte greeted customers and took me to my table. Jamie was an efficient server and Elizabeth, one of the managers was charming. We loved the setting, lighting and ability to stroll inside Roman and Williams. Everything on the table including the candlesticks, plates and napkins was for sale! My mother started with the Betteraves vinaigrette (beets) and I had Notew Salade de Tomatoes (mixed heirloom tomatoes). The beets were definitely the better dish of the two. For the main course, my Mom had the Halibut au Beurre Blanc. It was a lovely dish and the halibut was perfectly cooked. I'm not generally a meat eater but decided to have the Filet de Boeuf au Poivre and it was superb! The meat was perfectly cooked and the dish was bursting with flavor. It included 2 plates for the table, which were pate and smoked salmon, with caviar; then you pick an appetizer, I chose the mushroom ravioli soup, it was SO good! You don't even taste the mushroom! Then for the entree, I got the filet mignon, it was very good, (I wish it was bigger). Someone else in my party got the lobster pasta, it was very good, a lot of pasta. And then dessert! That being said, I can certainly appreciate the fine dining experience that French Restaurants offer. I made a reservation but had to wait a few minutes in their furniture store area to be seated, which I thought was kind of interesting. When they sat us we were sat at a cute candle lit table that almost felt like out of a Disney movie. The service was attentive and fairly quick. I ordered the filet mignon with pasta. It was tasty. I actually really liked 2/3 things we got here but for me I can justify the cost. The chicken dish we got was 37 dollars but was barely enough for one person. I did really enjoy their savory crepes and one of the best desserts of my life. You HAVE to get the tarte tatin. It is the absolute best bite I've had in nyc. The service was definitely nothing exciting and the vibes was definitely the kind of fine dining I personally don't enjoy. We were set up in their private dining room in the basement, absolutely gorgeous design wise. Very interesting that it's half showroom. We started with these little cheese breads, not amazing, the middles were hallow so not really bread but the taste was nice. We also got served pickled veggies, loved the mushrooms. For a starter, we were served a gem salad with green goddess type dressing. I've never why in fancy places I have to cut up my salad, but I really enjoyed it. For my main, I went with a filet de beouf au poivre. The steak came out a little less cooked then I would have loved but the quality was nice & the sauce was insane. This restaurant has horrible staff that are rude, unprofessional, and racist. My friend and I are Asian, more specifically Korean, and noticed that 2 waiters were staring and laughing at us. I heard the comment "Arigato" and when one of the waiters came forward to fill my water, I made eye contact with him and he abruptly looked down and his facial expression looked between very awkward and guilty. There was no other asians around us. Everything felt very uncomfortable and we were in a bad mood when we left. I still left a 20% tip out of courtesy but I will not be coming here ever again. Note: My friend and I are in our 20s and there was no one our age. Our waiter was polite enough but there was a considerable difference between the way he would treat us and converse with everyone else. Side Note: The food is not good for how much they charge. My friend and I finished the food because we were hungry but once we finished, we felt very out of place and uncomfortable. The side dish potatoes literally just tasted of unseasoned cream and potatoes. Our server recommended the anchovies but it was horrible. The ambiance of the place is really chic. I love the art they have in their restaurant. They have a built in mini museum/store, which is super cute and fits their aesthetic. It was a bit pricy, but it seems almost everything in New York is. The service was good, and the food was decent. The chicken I ordered was a bit dry. But other than that everything else was okay.
