My dad has been living at The Commons in Elk Grove for five years. He started in assisted living and transitioned to memory care over a year ago. Even though it is heartbreaking to see your loved one decline physically and mentally over time, I'm so thankful for the wonderful and caring staff at The Commons. Their friendly, knowledgeable and caring demeanor has made this health journey with my dad much easier to bear. We visit multiple times a week but it's so wonderful to know that, when we can't be there, he is safe and well cared for. This review is not about the quality of care provided to the residents at The Commons at Elk Grove (The Commons), it focuses entirely on my experience as an independent contractor performing piano for the residents. The Commons initially contracted me as a pianist in January 2026 at rate of $200/hr, and I performed for the residents monthly. For the first three performances I was paid about two weeks after each one. For my performances in April and May I was paid about three weeks after each one. I still have not received payment for my performance in June, more than a month later. I emailed the Director of Wellness Programming about the payment delays, and also asked for the payment schedule. She did not respond. While I enjoyed playing for the residents, I was disappointed by how I was treated, specifically the delays in payment and because the Director of Wellness Programming did not respond to my recent emails. Based on what happened I decided not to play the piano at The Commons anymore. read more

The Commons at Elk Grove was a wonderful surprise as I looked at a number of assisted living sites for my beloved father. We took a tour at THE COMMONS today and we're greeted by friendly staff that welcomed us. We had a fantastic lunch by Chef Michael, Joli, and Sam. Good afternoon I'm writing this review to bring light to a concern me and my family had regarding this facility. My family member lived here on both sides, assisted living and memory unit. While we are happy with the care, our family member received. We are very uncomfortable with certain things we have overheard everyone deserves to have a peaceful work environment and me and my family observed several times where people abuse their power. The main reason we removed our loved one from this facility was a new care need another being finance related. Although these were the main reasons, it does not sit right with me and my family that the person running the memory care seems to abuse power unfortunately there were several times I don't think we were supposed to hear what the director "Aimee" said but the truth is, we did hear displeasing things. The staff here is amazing when it comes to care and for somebody that is directing and managing a whole department, you should have more sense and respect for the people working under you the people who do most of the work deserve better. I have heard now of several people who we had the pleasure of knowing and who took care of our loved one that have no choice but to leave due to unfair and hostile work environment. This is very distasteful and unsettling! Do better! You should always treat your staff with kindness as they are a reflection of you as a director. read more

The Commons is one of the most incredible communities I have been a part of. My family and I had a loved one reside there; she was so well taken care of that we couldn't ask for anything better. The staff was on it with her medications, if we asked for help they came immediately, very frequent check ins, delicious food, so many amenities and activities, and all the genuine care and support you could ask for. Even coming back to say hi 1.5 years later after our loved one passed away, they still remember her and us. It's the most heartwarming community out there. Declining Quality of Care - Staffing shortages directly impact resident care. This can result in misplaced laundry, delayed responses to emergency pendants, and other lapses in daily support. Potentially Misleading Reviews - Some online reviews on platforms like Yelp and Google appear to be written by current staff members, raising questions about authenticity and transparency. I've been looking for care for my mom in the Sacramento area for a few months now and thought it was strange the stars jumped up quickly on this one. It appears they had staff do 5 star reviews in the last few months. So I did some digging, there's a recent serious citation through Dept of Social Services for muliple elopements of a dementia patient. From day one of working with this wonderful team I can see the warm, welcoming atmosphere made it feel like home. One Bedroom Studio: 2019 Monthly Base Rent: $4,141.94 2022 Monthly Base Rent: $ 5,097.00 [That is a $955.09 increase over the past three years!! That is 23% overall or 7.67%/year for the same small studio.] Sadly, the Increases did not maintain Quality of FOOD or basic hygiene CARE. Dear MBK LLC Ownership,   Thanks for getting back with me and clarifying the Rent is not prorated and for your inquiry as to why we left. I was not so unhappy with the initial price increases as I was with the over all quality of everything going down since Melissa moved in May 2019 and the more recent increases. Here are my concerns and please feel free to point out where I may have been misinformed or if any of my calculations are erroneous. The cost data I complied is from the MBK Web Portal.   1. We have been dealing with a few UTI the past years or so and while I realize Melissa is not easy to deal with, it was never reported to me by your staff (to the best of my knowledge) that her pants and bedding smells like urine and that perhaps she needs more showers. We spent a considerable amount time and stress over another UTI like symptom the past few months and while the Doctor could not conclude why, it is common knowledge that female anatomy needs to be kept exceptionally clean. I realize that you cannot control what your residents do, but you have a moral duty to report that to me, as her Power Of Attorney. You see, while I realize this may seem common place in your business, in the eyes of the Law, I could be charged with Elder Abuse for unsanitary living conditions and worse of all, Melissa may had to suffer more. I am not just an employee who can be fired, but could be personally sued as I have to answer to my Estate Family Members, Melissa's Attorney and Social Services. This is the most serious of all offenses I see and was a serious violation of Trust between the Client and the Provider.        2. When I moved Melissa's furniture out, no one had cleaned behind the bed and it was not like it was impossible to clean. I am not saying it needed to be cleaned every week, but at least once a month or so. For $5,097.00 a month, one would think the corners, pictures, lamp shades etc would be cleaned once a month or so? Perhaps I am expecting too much?    3. High Turnover Rate. Your staff change so much that no one knows what exactly is going on and yet the price keeps going up. Clearly, wages are not increasing to retain people.    4. Food: It leaves much to be desired from what it was 3 years ago. The $25.00 for the Cheeseburger that was not BBQ'd at Fourth of July was the tip of ice berg. You gave everyone the same burger they had on the regular menu without so much as bringing a BBQ outside (advertised as a 4th of July BBQ!). Overall, Melissa reported to me that the food is not as good and she does not have a problem tasting food. She also experienced Constipation when the menu was changed.    5. When Melissa first moved in on 05/02/19, Rent for a small Studio Apartment was $4,141.94/month and now it is $5,097.00/month. That is a $955.09 increase over the past three years!! That is 23% since inception or 7.67%/Year. When we signed that initial agreement, it was agreed upon that the Rent would never go up more than 5% /year! It was something I specifically requested of Terrie Peters and the then acting Community Manager when we first moved in. I was informed by Terrie that the manager would put a note into the file for Melissa. Please see if there is any notes in her file.    6. I have not addressed the fact that Melissa was at Level 3 when she moved in and has since been down graded to level 2 and is almost paying as much as Level 3 care was when she moved in. Two showers a week at Level II does not make any sense when someone is trying to fend off a UTI?    7. I was able to find a very comparable place for much less money and she got a bigger room with new carpets. (Your carpets were old when we moved in.) Plus the staff have been there for years and their food was better! It is not as grand looking and does not have as many amenities, but certainly is not worth almost 1K a month more at The Commons; I expect much more for that kind of "Premium Rent".   8. An overall feeling of "Ownership Does Not Really Care" but the "Employees Try Hard". Essentially, there is a corporate mentality that developed over the past few years and while I realize COVID was tough on everyone, it did not provide a license to print money on the backs of the elderly or their insurance! If anything, services were cut back for two years (drivers, event planning, extra programs) and yet Rent increased substantially.   9. Employee Holiday Bonus. This should be funded by MBK and not the Residents at this kind of pricing. read more

All of the staff were so helpful and gracious. It was during the height of Covid and a stressful time for all. It always felt like home. Last month my dad went into hospice. I can not say enough good things about the Commons. For our family experience, my father needed a real recovery center post hospitalization from Covid. At age 89, he rebounded quickly at the Commons. The staff, dining area and nutrition, accommodations, and the wonderful setting was perfect for him. He gained back weight and started walking again without a wheelchair or stroller. Also, his care plan included insurance-covered visits by an RN, physical therapist, and occupational therapist who easily came onto property and provided the needed care for his healthy resurgence. Overall, he needed the Commons and the 4 week experience was life-saving. The residents are all welcoming and there is a family vibe to the community. My Mother has been living at The Commons Elk Grove for 3 years and has thrived even during the COVID lock downs. The staff adapted and created an environment that gave purpose to the residents and kept their minds active. They continue to provide a caring environment for the residents and family (now that they have opened back up after COVID). And this Saturday Easter celebration was no different, they created a very welcoming environment it was wonderful to see all the department heads pitch in and be present serving the residents and their families. Well done on the food, it was delicious and the servers did a great job getting the food out to the guest in a timely manner.  We were well taken care of, the staff filled in for each other seamlessly they all seemed to have each others backs, we were never without water or coffee!  Chef did a stellar job at the crepe station and she handled special orders brilliantly.  It was so popular, she ran out of mix!  This is a keeper for all brunches in my selfish opinion!! The big bunny (thanks for enduring the heat of the outfit!) and little bunnies were a special treat!  It is wonderful news that the little rabbits will stay as permanent guest!  I heard they were touring the community yesterday! Super super super!  Let us know if they need a special fund for their care, we would pitch in.  My Mother truly enjoyed the rabbits as did many of the other residents! Great job on the after brunch activities!  I know how hard it is to coordinate and get activities that all age groups could enjoy and get them to participate, keep doing what you do, it shows you care for the residents and work well together to make everyone feel included. Decorations are always festive and well done.  I am not good at this in general so I appreciate others efforts even more. General comments: Front desk as always is brilliant!  They are always willing to help my mother sign in and out, it helps us out tremendously, who are picking her up!  They always make us feel like we are not asking for too much and willing to help figure out and answer my detailed questions.  Their "can do" attitude always makes you feel things will get done and handled.  The front desk is your first impression of The Commons and they never disappoint, even when they are juggling 5 other things that are pulling on their attention. Speaking of getting things handled it is great to see the carpet cleaner out and being used, the rugs are looking great!  I only have two request for maintenance, and have submitted them for maintenance to handle. They usually take only a day or so to fix especially if it is not urgent. Extra effort award!  The caring staff continues to always check in on my mother to be sure she is up and going in the morning which of course makes my Mother feel special and safe, thank you!  Also kuddos to the activity personel for knowing what activities she likes and going to her room to remind her to come join in, these activities are so important for her to participate in, so we appreciate the extra effort! The staff in the dining room have a way of convincing my Mother that she needs to eat properly and are great at suggesting other yummy alternatives they know she likes! They continue to maintain COVID safety precautions providing the residents with extra protections by all staff members wearing masks. Inspite of the mask mandate, the staff continue to be polite and engaging!  Always say hi and even behind the mask you can always tell they are smiling day after day, which is impressive great job all around! read more

My mom was at the Commons for three years before her passing. The staff there went over and above what we expected taking such great care of her. She took part in many of the activities and made some special friends. The community was just the right size, not too small or too big. It is such a bright cheery place.
